Struggling against the Legendary Ships in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced? Don't worry, you're not alone. According to player stats released today by Ubisoft, Legendary Ship encounters have just a 47% win rate, meaning that more than half of all attempts to sink the boss boats have ended in failure. Of course, it's still relatively early days. Black Flag Resynced has only been available for a month, meaning that many players will have likely attempted to take down a Legendary Ship before their Jackdaw was fully equipped. And even then, Legendary Ships are designed as an endgame activity. They're not meant to be easy! Other player stats revealed by Ubisoft have revealed that players have spent 8.07 million hours manually...
Development on a beloved Terraria mod is shutting down following sexual misconduct allegations revolving around its lead developer. Meanwhile, the creators of the mod have reportedly turned down an offer to save it from streamer xQc. Terraria is one of the biggest crafting games in the world and has a thriving modding community. One of the best and most popular mods is known as Calamity, which massively expands the game with additional bosses, biomes, items, and music, almost serving as an unofficial expansion for the title. However, it has been bogged down in controversy for some time now, which has led to the team ceasing development. The mod's lead developer, Ozzatron, was accused of allegedly participating in an NSFW Discord...
Control Resonant’s combat is a massive departure from the classic Remedy gunfights of the original Control. The shapeshifting gun has been ripped out of your hands and replaced with The Aberrant, a skeleton key of a melee weapon capable of unlocking enemy weaknesses, be that in the form of nifty dual blades or a defence-smashing hammer. With multiple forms to experiment with, numerous abilities to unlock, and an extensive skill tree to explore, The Aberrant represents Control taking one step further into the realm of action RPGs. To learn how it all works, I spoke to the team at Remedy all about Resonant’s new combat system and the weapon that powers it all. Having now played three or so hours of Control Resonant, I can confirm that...
As a kid, one of my favourite moments in The Empire Strikes Back was when Han Solo and Chewbacca got the drop on an Imperial probe droid on Hoth by flanking it on either side and blasting it to bits, so you can imagine I was pretty stoked when Star Wars Zero Company allowed me to pull off plenty of ice cold combat manoeuvres just like it during the first 10 hours of its campaign. When it was first revealed last year I assumed this turn-based tactics adventure would only appeal to hardcore fans of the genre, that it was merely XCOM with X-Wings, perhaps. However, after getting hands-on with a near-finished build, I’m happy to report that Zero Company’s strategic shooting seems extremely approachable for newcomers without sacrificing any...
This is an IGN opinion piece from Ryan McCaffrey, who worked at Official Xbox Magazine from 2002-2012 during the original Xbox and Xbox 360 era before joining IGN, where he remains “the Xbox guy.” In the run-up to Xbox’s 25th anniversary, he’ll be sharing his memories from the platform’s first quarter-century. Back in its day, the original Xbox was known as the “shooter box” – a reputation that wasn’t unwarranted. But if you ask me, Microsoft also deserves a ton of credit for popularizing Western RPGs on consoles. The countless incredible Japanese role-playing games on Nintendo and PlayStation platforms dominated the genre back then, but when Xbox came around, that began to change. Bethesda’s Xbox port of The Elder Scrolls 3...
Until Dawn developer Supermassive Games has announced layoffs impacting up to 75 staff — the studio's third round of job losses in three years. This latest round of cuts was confirmed publicly today in a statement posted to social media by Supermassive, which described the "difficult decision to begin a redundancy consultation process" as a "necessary step to help ensure the sustainability of the company." "We know this will be an incredibly difficult time for everyone, and our priority throughout the process will be to provide support to all those impacted," the studio continued. Supermassive Games' latest launch was Directive 8020, another title in the studio's signature horror anthology series, The Dark Pictures. The game arrived...
With Gears of War: E-Day in the middle of its open beta, players are getting stuck into its PvP, gnashing their way through hordes of enemies while darting about from cover to cover — just as they did in Gears of War back in the day. And 20 year-old arguments first had on the Xbox 360 are flaring up again on the current generation of consoles, as some Gears fans bemoan sweaty movement all over again. If you’ve ever played Gears PvP you’ve probably seen other players move in and out of cover incredibly quickly, making themselves hard to pin down and shoot, all while using the Gnasher to hit hard from close quarters. It’s called wall bouncing, and while E-Day doesn’t replicate it exactly as it works before, players are still able to...
Beef between two high-profile video game industry CEOs has bubbled over into the public domain, via a trailer for new taxi simulation game Rideshare Stimulator. Footage of the game includes several references to Borderlands boss Randy Pitchford, head of Gearbox Studios, and an embarrassing incident involving a USB stick that contained pornographic material. And now, those references have been confirmed as a deliberate "dig" at Pitchford by Matt Karch, the boss of Rideshare Stimulator publisher Saber Interactive, as payback for "shots" fired at Embracer in Borderlands 4. (Embracer was previously the parent company of both Gearbox and Saber, and where Karch served on the board of directors.) "The dig is because Randy took shots at...
Forza Horizon 6 developer Playground Games has confirmed the new content coming to the game over the next four weeks in the Series 4 Horizon Playlist ‘Horizon Mascot Party.’ The content includes new cars, as typical, but also a new, temporary time attack circuit situated within the stadium. Series 4 will run from August 13 to September 10, and Playground has revealed the 10 cars that will be available to collect over the next four weeks. Some of them are new to the Horizon series, and some are returning prizes from Forza Horizon 6’s Series 1 playlist. This will mean that you may well have already picked some of these up if you’ve been playing FH6 regularly since launch. However, if you’ve only been playing as of more recently, having...
Alan Wake and Control developer Remedy is betting big on Control Resonant, as Alan Wake 2 finally passes 3 million copies sold. Remedy's latest financial results show decreases in profit, revenue and cash flow — but this isn't a huge surprise. The company is busy putting the finishing touches to its impressive-looking Control sequel, while sales of its back catalog have been steady. Originally launched in October 2023, Alan Wake 2 took some time to turn a profit. Meanwhile, as previously announced, Remedy's multiplayer experiment FBC: Firebreak received its final update back in March, following low sales. Jean-Charles Gaudechon, installed as CEO of Remedy in March, commented on the company's latest results by pointing out that the...
Independent developer Illfonic, best known for its asymmetric multiplayer games based on iconic horror franchises, has revealed its upcoming Halloween: The Game has been refused classification in Australia. As a result, Halloween: The Game won’t be able to be sold via Australian storefronts. However, Illfonic also announced that the Australian rating means it won’t be selling the game in New Zealand either, despite the fact that New Zealand is objectively not a part of Australia and is, in fact, a separate sovereign country with its own government, currency, anthem, sports teams, and – yes – classification system. While no classification decision has actually been published by the Australian Classification Board at this stage, IGN...

Ever since the Steam Machine came out a little over a month ago, Valve has been busy releasing SteamOS updates almost weekly. In the latest update, the company added preliminary gamepad support for one of the most powerful handheld gaming PCs on the market. While Valve still hasn't added full support for third-party handhelds, the update notes point to "improved support" for MSI Claw handhelds, along with "initial gamepad support" for the Claw 8 EX AI+, the Ayaneo Pocket S2 and the Konkr Fit. Support for the Claw 8 EX AI+ is awesome, but not necessarily surprising. After all, it's an x86 handheld just like the Steam Deck (and all the other handhelds that currently support Valve's gaming OS). The two other handhelds listed here are...
Kazuhisa Wada, producer for Atlus' P-Studio, says he "can't say for sure" if Persona 1 and 2 remakes are coming, but said they are still games he thinks "we have to do." Wada opened up about the Persona studio's development pipeline during an interview with GamerBraves. More than two years removed from the launch of Persona 3 Reload and on the cusp of the release of Persona 4 Revival, fans naturally have one question on their minds: Where are the Persona 1 and 2 remakes? Both games – which actually released in the '90s as Revelations: Persona and Persona 2: Innocent Sin/Eternal Punishment – have, so far, been left out of Atlus' trend of remakes. There's been no word on whether modern-day reimaginings for the two JRPGs will be in the...
I’m at the point in Fields of Mistria where I’ve started talking to my dragon statue, Caldarus, and telling my pink dog to do chores. If that interests you, even without context, then you probably have a lot to look forward to. Fields of Mistria is the type of farming sim I wish I had in my youth – it resembles early 2000s cozy classics from Harvest Moon to Animal Crossing, all mixed together into an anime-coded concoction. The world of Mistria is brimming with lore and its villagers have distinct personalities that shine through in their dialogue. I can tell I still have a while before I’ve seen everything its newly released 1.0 update has to offer, but I already can’t wait to learn more about my new home and neighbors. This fantasy...
A Battlefield 6 player with hundreds of hours of playtime has scored a full refund of the game after Battlefield Studios removed key modes from its quick-play matchmaking. Over on Reddit, the player revealed that Steam granted them a full $110 refund of the game's Phantom Edition, saying they got upset after developers continued to pull modes from the game's quick play matchmaking. They noted that it began with Squad Deathmatch and King of the Hill, but once Rush (a Battlefield staple) was pulled, they requested a refund. Steam famously refuses to grant most refunds unless the game was purchased in the last two weeks and you've barely played it. However, the player wrote a note to a support agent explaining their feelings and why they...

Final Fantasy fans are convinced a Dirge of Cerberus remake could be on the horizon after one Japan’s most famous rockstars, Gackt, posted a photo of himself cosplaying as Crisis Core's Genesis. Gackt famously voiced Genesis Rhapsodos in the Japanese dubs of both Crisis Core and the not-so-secret secret ending in Dirge of Cerberus. It’s fairly well-known that he helped inspire and even design the character, who’s been a fan-favorite since his first appearance nearly twenty years ago. While Gackt reprised his role for the Crisis Core remake in 2022, not much has been seen of Genesis since then — until now. On August 6, 2026, Gackt posted an Instagram reel showing himself decked out in a Genesis cosplay (though, can it truly be called...
Developer Arc System Works has launched a major Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls update that seems to have fixed many of the PC issues players reported following its launch. It's been a rough first weekend for the developer's new 4v4 tag team fighting game. Players almost immediately reported encountering stuttering issues following Marvel Tokon's PC and PlayStation 5 launch last week, with even fighting game community legend Maximilian Dood uninstalling the game from Steam during a livestream. Arc System Works said it was investigating the issues as players weighed refunds if fixes didn't arrive fast. Now, following maintenance that delivered an update this morning, the atmosphere surrounding Marvel Tokon is a little lighter. "It fixed...
A brand-new first-person shooter, Wardogs, could be a breakout title for the genre, according to players who recently went hands-on with an early version of the game. If you're not already familiar, Wardogs is a large-scale FPS that feels like a mix between Battlefield and Arma. There are vehicles, 100 players per match, massive maps, destructible environments, looting, and grounded tactical gunplay, but there are also some pretty unique elements. Every time you die, you spawn back at your base and build your loadout from scratch using money. You earn money by killing enemies, capturing objectives, and assisting your team in various ways. You can even tip your teammates for reviving you, healing you, or transporting you from base via...
It’s been over twenty years since Hideki Kamiya directed the very first Devil May Cry game, and his latest tweets are hinting that he might make a long-awaited return to the franchise. Kamiya’s X/Twitter account is a goldmine. When he’s not clapping back at trolls or blocking fans for tweeting at him in English, he’s gushing about Gunpla and occasionally providing insights on his projects, both past and present. While he normally blocks fans who ask him questions about franchises he’s no longer involved with (Resident Evil, Devil May Cry), he actually opened up about his work with DMC in a rare moment of goodwill — and it’s sending players into a frenzy. On August 9, 2026, a fan asked him a lore-specific question regarding the final...
Sonic the Hedgehog is joining Fortnite as part of the battle royale's upcoming gaming-themed season. Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4, which is named Override, is expected to feature collaborations with a string of classic video game franchises, including Tetris, Kingdom Hearts and Persona. Today, we got our first look at gameplay, via a clip shared by the Sonic the Hedgehog social media account. Footage shows an area themed around Sonic's iconic Green Hill Zone, and Peely the banana dashing through it, Sonic-style. Presumably there will be some new Sonic movement item, granting super speed. Eagle-eyed Fortnite fans will spot that the teaser opens with the logo for the Imagined Order (IO) — the game's original bad guys, led by Geno...

Aliens: Fireteam Elite has had its cloud servers shut down, leaving Nintendo Switch owners unable to play the game without any form of refund. While this shutdown does not come as a surprise — owners were informed of the servers' impending closure earlier this year — the loss of another digital service is sparking headlines in the wake of PlayStation's recent controversial announcement that it was ending disc production for new PS5 games from January 2028 onwards. As players discuss the inevitable rise in digital downloads and loss of permanently-playable physical copies, Aliens: Fireteam Elite has become the latest cloud-based Switch game to get switched off, just three years on from its 2023 launch. Previously sold for $29.99 or...
The box office phenomenon that is Spider-Man: Brand New Day has sparked a surge of interest in Sony video game Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, with players flocking to reinstall the game or buy it anew. New data from Alinea Analytics shows Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 has sold another 316,000 copies since Brand New Day’s enormous launch, generating $11 million across PlayStation 5 and Steam in less than two weeks. This past weekend it saw 1 million daily active users for the first time since launch week, or roughly 2.6x its pre-film daily engagement. Not bad for a game that first launched nearly three years ago! I imagine the well-timed update that added two new Spidey suits, including Tom Holland's new costume from Spider-Man: Brand New Day...
Starbreeze Entertainment and Vice Studio's Payday TV show has added an unexpected name to its team: rapper Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson. The artist and actor behind everything from 2000s hit "In Da Club" to 2009 video game 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand has officially joined the heist video game adaptation as an executive producer. He's attached via his G-Unit Film and Television, a company he launched in the 2000s as part of his work outside of music. "G-Unit Film & TV has built cinematic crime stories that connect with audiences around the world," 50 Cent said in a statement. "Teaming up with Vice Studios and bringing the world of Payday to the screen gives us the chance to build something big, a high-energy franchise that pushes the heist...
Not only is Forza Horizon 6 one of the best games of 2026 so far, but it has also produced one of the best-looking controllers I've ever seen. And, to make things even better, Xbox's Forza Horizon 6 Controller has just dropped to $74.99 at Amazon. That's a 17% discount off the MSRP of $89.99, and $15 savings in total. I'll leave a link to the deal just below. I mean, just look at it. The controller is colorful and busy in the best possible way, with various shades of blue, including a large transparent blue panel across the face, accented by pops of pink, green, yellow, and even a silver D-pad disc. It's bright and flashy without tipping into gaudy, with the spiky triangle shapes and racetrack-inspired lines giving the whole thing...
Valve has begun notifying recent Steam hardware customers of a personal data breach that may have exposed their name, address, phone number and email. Anyone who purchased a Steam Deck, Steam Machine, or Steam Controller within Europe over the past 90 days may have potentially been impacted, Valve has said, though passwords and payment details are not thought to be at risk. Hackers are believed to have gained access to systems held by CEVA Logistics, the European distribution firm used by Valve to ship Steam hardware across the continent. Valve says it shares "specific delivery-related information from Steam" with CEVA, which are "the details the attacker likely took." "Because CEVA retains this information for up to 90 days... we...
A former Bethesda developer who worked on Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76 has outlined how he would have designed Starfield had he been in charge of the game — and it sounds very different. Nate Purkeypile worked at Bethesda Game Studios for 14 years before leaving in 2021 to found solo indie studio Just Purkey Games, which is behind 2024’s The Axis Unseen and last year’s Deedlee Doo! Carkour! He was lead lighting artist and senior world artist on Starfield before exiting the project and the studio over two years before the game came out. In a new interview with The Examined Game, Purkeypile said he issued a warning internally about Starfield aiming to contain 1,000 planets — something that became a dominant line of its...
No Man’s Sky developer Hello Games is celebrating its 10-year anniversary with a few eye-catching stats and a tease for the upcoming update. The hotly anticipated No Man’s Sky launched on August 9, 2016 on PS4 and PC to tens of thousands of negative reviews on Steam, with players complaining about broken promises and a lack of meaningful content, particularly on the multiplayer side. The game quickly settled on the dreaded ‘overwhelmingly negative’ Steam user review rating, a clear sign to anyone who visited its Steam page that something was very wrong. But Guildford, England-based developer Hello Games continued to update No Man’s Sky over the years, improving player sentiment to the point where it is now considered superb. It took...
