Project Ethos is a new free-to-play third-person hero extraction shooter that mixes in roguelike elements. The main game of Project Ethos is an extraction mode. And while I was excited to finally see 31st Union’s first project since its formation in 2019, I couldn’t help but feel that a lot of the mechanics felt like they belonged in games from that year. Here’s the thing: Project Ethos is fine as a game. It hits all the right notes as an extraction hero third-person shooter, but my first impression after a few hours of hands-on time is that it seems to fall short of delivering anything that’s truly genre-defying in either the roguelike or extraction shooter departments. In the preview, I was able to play six different heroes, each...
Activision has unveiled Call of Duty’s new user interface, set to come in ahead of Black Ops 6’s launch on October 25 and replace the much-maligned Call of Duty HQ. The headline here is that the new UI’s Home tab includes Game Tiles, which means that unlike the previous Call of Duty UI, players will now be able to directly access games via their own self-contained user interfaces. Ever since Modern Warfare's release in 2019 and the subsequent release of battle royale Warzone players have criticized Activision for Call of Duty's unwieldy UI, which currently forces users to jump through a number of hoops before getting to the game they actually want to play. In a blog post, Activision said it’s making it easier for players to get...
The Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 community is up in arms over sweeping nerfs made by the latest patch — so much so that some players are review bombing the game on Steam. Update 4.0, which kicks off Space Marine 2 Season 2 with a new PvE map, Tyranid enemy, and Lethal difficulty, also changes the game balance in significant ways to make Operations mode harder. Here’s the relevant section from the Update 4.0 patch notes: Melee Archetypes: Fencing weapons' perfect parry window will now have the same duration as balanced weapons but it will start from the first frame of parry animation. Melee Perks: Chainsword, Power Fist, Combat Knife charged attacks perks get significant damage increase. Basic Auspex Scan: bonus damage on...
Hazelight Studios has announced that its excellent co-operative adventure game and IGN 2021 game of the year nominee, It Takes Two, has sold over 20 million copies. This milestone comes three and a half years after the couch co-op game's launch on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, with a Switch release following in November 2022. It Takes Two sold over one million units in the month following its launch, and its numbers have climbed steadily since. At last count in March of this year, it had reached 16 million units, a testimony to positive word-of-mouth and effusive critical praise helping the game continue to do well even years after release. And it helps that the game's been on sale numerous times since launch - it's just $9.99 (down from...
It only took 10 minutes of playing Unknown 9: Awakening for me to feel a keen sense of deja vu. Taking out enemies in small arenas, watching an emotional story of personal growth, and squeezing between plenty of tight cracks in walls – it’s a formula that feels all too familiar, sticking to the well-established traditions of the "Crevice Crawler" genre. It does try out one or two unique ideas to set itself apart, like mind-control powers that let you play puppet master with your enemies, but the problem is that it executes on the fundamentals significantly worse than its contemporaries. There are certainly glimmers of hope within that new stuff, but any novelty quickly wears off, resulting in a generic and underwhelming slog full of...
It looks like Konami and developer Bloober Team have successfully revived the Silent Hill franchise after the Silent Hill 2 remake hit an impressive sales milestone. In a tweet, Konami said the Silent Hill 2 remake sold one million copies as of October 11, just four days after the game’s global release date. This is thought to make the Silent Hill 2 remake the fastest-selling Silent Hill game ever, but Konami has yet to rubber stamp that potential record. Silent Hill 2 remake launched across PC and PlayStation 5 (there’s no word on an Xbox Series X and S version yet), and met with critical acclaim. IGN’s Silent Hill 2 remake review returned an 8/10. We said: “Silent Hill 2 is a great way to visit – or revisit – one of the most...
Authorities in Kuwait have blocked the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 just days before it was due to launch. Black Ops 6 was set to hit store shelves globally on October 25, including in Kuwait, but regulators have prohibited its release. A spokesperson for Activison told IGN that it remained “hopeful” that the authorities in Kuwait would reconsider. Here’s the statement in full: Activision failed to explain the reason for Black Ops 6’s Kuwait ban, but it probably had something to do with its setting. Black Ops 6 is set in the 90s amid the Gulf War, which kicked off when Iraq invaded Kuwait on August 2, 1990. Indeed, promotional material for Black Ops 6 features world leaders from the time period, including Bill Clinton...
2K has teased the full reveal of Project Ethos, a third-person roguelike hero shooter in development at 31st Union. 31st Union and boss Michael Condrey flagged a reveal at 9am PT / 5pm UK today, October 17, on Twitch. The Twitch channel in question mentions a game called Project Ethos, which is described as a “third-person roguelike hero shooter.” That’s all we have for now. 31st Union is the San Francisco-based, 2K-owned studio established as 2K Silicon Valley back in 2019 before a name change a year later. It was set up by ex-Sledgehammer Games co-founder Michael Condrey, who before working on Call of Duty was one of the chief developers of EA’s Dead Space series at Visceral Games. Project Ethos launches into the ultra...
Activision has finally confirmed the Multiplayer maps, modes, and Operators available at the launch of Call of duty: Black Ops 6. In a blog post, Activision said Black Ops 6 launches with 16 Multiplayer maps, 10 standard Multiplayer modes, four alternative Multiplayer modes, and 21 Operators. Let’s start with the launch maps. All Black Ops 6’s launch maps are small to medium-sized, Activision said, with traditional three-lane routes. Developer Treyarch said they’re designed to offer “rapid, energetic combat, along with a variety of scenic set-pieces, cover opportunities, and ranged thoroughfares to ensure your favorite style of play is catered to, from close quarter strikes to long-range sniping, with emphasis always on the action.”...
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has launched its first major update, adding a new PvP map and Lethal difficulty for free to all players across all platforms. Update 4.0 adds new PvE map Termination, which is available in the Operations game mode. As revealed this week, Termination sees players battle against a huge Tyranid Hierophant Bio-Titan, added to the game for the first time, on the planet Kadaku. Elsewhere, the update adds a new, even harder difficulty called Lethal. This is difficulty five of five for Operations mode. And photo mode is now available in Operations (works only in solo), with characters able to follow the camera with their eyes. It's worth noting that from a balance perspective, Update 4.0 makes a number of...
Bohemia Interactive chose an unusual venue to announce its next big game: a concert. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, Czech studio Bohemia Interactive put together a concert of video game music performed by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra. The concert included songs from its Arma series, as well as DayZ, Ylands, and Vigor. But the big surprise of the night was a blink and you’ll miss it announcement that Arma 4 is due out in 2027. At the end of the final piece of the night, the game’s logo and release window flashed on the big screen that was propped up behind the orchestra for little more than a second, but it was long enough to catch the attention of the live audience as well as the livestream chat. Arma is Bohemia’s...
Welcome back to paying a little for a whole lot. Case in point(s): MGS Collection, 1TB XSX Storage, and some apex PS Resis going for way cheaper than usual. I've also spotted some uncommonly low Switch first-party titles, which are sure to be snapped up quick. So maybe run-jump at them fast. In retro news, I'm celebrating the 21st bday of Animal Crossing. This was it, campers—the OG concept that somehow pivoted from failed 64DD dungeon-crawling RPG to a non-linear life sim where Nintendo tried to humorously warn me about mortgages being an absolute racket. (Joke's on them; can't even get one now.) Nevertheless, this game delighted the hardcore and casuals alike—personally, I was sold by the fishing and 19-odd (free!!!) NES games. From...
Don't Nod's ongoing struggles continue, with the company announcing it's preparing to implement a reorganization that could result in layoffs of up to 69 employees. The announcement comes with the company's financial results for the first half of the year today, which showed an 11% year-over-year decline in operating revenue. Per the company, the decline is the result of Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden and Jusant not performing as well as expected. "Our half-year results for 2024 reflect the economic underperformance of our latest release, despite solid ratings on Metacritic, as well as the accounting impact of the decisions we had to take," said CEO Oskar Guilbert in a statement. "The initial performance support measures announced...
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has sold 4.5 million copies, publisher Focus Entertainment has announced. The Saber Interactive-developed action game set in Games Workshop’s grimdark science fiction universe had already broken records upon its launch on September 9, becoming the most-played Warhammer 40,000 or Warhammer video game ever released on Steam with huge peak concurrent player counts. Now, a little over a month after launch, Space Marine 2 has hit 4.5 million players. Last month, Saber Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits told IGN how the breakout success of Space Marine 2 had “changed everything” for the company. At the time, Willits wouldn’t go into hard numbers, either in revenue or profit terms, but did go on the record...

The Halo Infinite battle royale mode which Microsoft reportedly scrapped was in fact real, with one developer saying it "could have been a game changer" for the beloved Xbox franchise. GameSpot spotted mention of the Halo Infinite battle royale in the LinkedIn page of Mike Clopper, the former game director at Halo support studio Certain Affinity. Clopper now works for Raven Software. "I led a large team of designers working on a canceled Battle Royale mode for Halo." Clopper said. "I believe this product could have been a game changer for the franchise. We loved playing it and working on it was a fantastic experience in spite of its cancelation." I believe this product could have been a game changer for the franchise. Though a Halo...
Dragon Age: The Veilguard developer BioWare has revealed exactly how its upcoming fantasy role-playing sequel will benefit from PS5 Pro. BioWare said in a blog post that Dragon Age: The Veilguard includes fidelity and performance modes targeting 30 frames per second and 60 frames per second respectively on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S, but it is also “specifically enhanced” for the $700 PS5 Pro. PS5 Pro has an AI-powered upscaling feature called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) that can automatically improve the image clarity of games, but PS5 Pro Enhanced games take particular advantage of the beefier mid-gen upgrade's features. According to BioWare technical director Maciej Kurowski, Dragon Age: The Veilguard “will lean...
Larian Studios has released Hotfix #28 for Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game Baldur's Gate 3 that includes improvements for all things modding. An update on Steam announced that the patch, which brings Baldur's Gate 3 to version number 4.1.1.6072089, is now available to download on all platforms. "Hotfix #28 addresses a few crashes and blockers, integrates a handful of gameplay bug fixes, and resolves some issues with the Mod Manager," Larian said. Though myriad improvements are hitting all platforms, the PS5 gets namechecked a few times in particular. PS5 players will enjoy quality of life improvements such as the Continue button working the same as Load Game in terms of reporting mod issues, the Mod Manager now correctly...
Like the joy you feel when a gauss rifle shell slams into an enemy mech’s cockpit, MechWarrior 5: Clans hits hard - but it can also frustrate like fighting an Atlas while missing an arm. On the one hand, it’s an engaging, mechanically excellent mech combat sim that nails all the customization and intricacy you’d expect from this walking tank series. Few things are more satisfying than coring an opponent’s mech with a single volley from a pair of gauss rifles at range, or tweaking your own mech until you get the perfect combination of weight, armor, and weapons to match your playstyle. Clans’s campaign story (which can be played solo or with up to five players in cross-platform co-op) also lands some haymakers that explore big ideas and...
Introducing Bad Cheese, a first-person psychological horror game rendered with hand-drawn art in the style of a century-old 16mm film cartoon. It's due out in 2025 for PC. Bad Cheese is being created by developer Simon Lukasik and publisher Feardemic. In it, you will "step into the tiny paws of a mouse spending the weekend at home with a dysfunctional Dad while Mom's away." You'll "complete tasks, eat snacks, find toys, and navigate the 'complicated family dynamic'" and "experience the gruesome reality of a child-mouse trying to maintain a sense of normalcy in a not-so-normal household." Finally, Lukasik, speaking about Bad Cheese, notes that "every family has a corpse in the closet and in this house, there are many closets." Check...
This week, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 publisher Focus Entertainment released a new trailer, below, showing the DLC coming to the game as part of its first year of post-launch updates. It confirmed the imminent arrival of the Tyranid Hierophant Bio-Titan enemy type, the new Neo-Volkite pistol, and the hotly anticipated Dark Angels chapter cosmetic pack. But, it seems, that is not all it confirmed. Eagle-eyed fans have also spotted a number of pieces of DLC neither Focus nor developer Saber Interactive have announced, although some of it has been strongly hinted at via datamining. First up, we see what looks like confirmation that the Ravenwing chapter of Space Marines is set to get a cosmetic pack after the Dark Angels get...
IO Interactive is teaming up with Build a Rocket Boy, the studio founded by former GTA producer Leslie Benzies, to publish MindsEye — his upcoming AAA action-adventure game billed as a proof of concept for the studio's Everywhere platform. IO Interactive, which is best-known for the Hitman series and is currently working on a James Bond game, will handle the distribution and marketing for MindsEye. IO Interactive Hakan Abrak says that Mindseye is "pretty far" along in development, and that the studio is currently working on plans to communicate a release date. "It was easy to fall in love with [MindsEye] because there were a lot of the parts were there and we were playing it. So they're still polishing and building things, but it's...
Two hours isn't enough time to see all the branching stories, admire all the beautiful graphics, and discover all the secrets within the world of STALKER 2. But it is enough to be left impressed. When I wasn't taking stock of my paltry ammunition levels and hunger gauge, I was looking out at beautiful fields of red poppy flowers. When I wasn’t getting distracted by an interesting side quest I was doing my best to lure the mutants into an anomaly trap. And while it was over just when it felt like it was getting extra good, it had still left its impression. The impression that the team at GSC Game World has created something special with STALKER 2. I will preface all this by admitting that I am not a STALKER exper meaning I have not...
IO Interactive boss Hakan Abrak has shared some fresh details about Project 007, the shadowy new project from the developers of Hitman that will feature a "James Bond origin story," saying that production is going "amazingly well" and that the studio will have more details to share soon. Speaking with IGN in a wide-ranging interview as part of today's MindsEye publishing deal, Abrak said that Project 007 is being fully developed, published, and funded by IO Interactive, and that there's "a lot of cool stuff coming up." "We absolutely feel like 20 plus years of training for the agent fantasy, creating an agent that travels the world and globetrotting whatnot, has given us some know-how on that. But obviously James Bond is a different...
Microsoft has pulled its $1 for 14 days of Game Pass trial ahead of next week's Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 release date. Mirroring a tactic it employed ahead of last year's launch of Bethesda’s Starfield, Microsoft has now made the $1 introductory offer unavailable. It was previously available only to those who hadn’t subscribed to Game Pass before. Microsoft is clearly hoping to capitalize on the release of Black Ops 6 straight into Game Pass as a day-one title, and it seems likely that hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people would have used the $1 offer to blast through the campaign and perhaps dip into Multiplayer and Zombies had it been available. IGN has asked Microsoft for comment. The Game Pass tiers that include the...
The Japan set Assassin's Creed Shadows from Ubisoft is facing yet another controversy as collectible figure maker PureArts has removed a statue from sale over its "insensitive" design. PureArts is "reworking the design" of the Qlectors Assassin’s Creed Shadows Yasuke & Naoe figure after some complained that its use of a one-legged Torii gate was offensive. "We recently released an insensitive design," PureArts said in an X/Twitter post. "We appreciate and have learned from the concerns brought to our attention, and we apologize for the harm this caused. "After reading and processing the feedback, we have immediately returned to the drawing board and are currently reworking the design of the Qlectors Assassin's Creed Shadows Yasuke &...
EA Sports has released a significant balance update for FC 25 addressing some of the key issues with the game. Since FC 25 launched last month, players have complained about a number of gameplay issues that have made competitive play frustrating, including overpowered Trivelas (shots taken with the outside of the foot) and a much-maligned five at the back formation that was incredibly difficult to break down. Title Update 3, which is rolling out now across all platforms, addresses those concerns with sweeping balance changes to many aspects of gameplay. The accuracy of Trivelas, for example, is “greatly reduced,” and the width of the defensive line for five defender formations is “greatly increased,” which will hopefully open up...
Activision has announced a long list of launch information for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 ahead of its global release date of October 25, 2024. In a blog post, the publisher confirmed preload and global launch times, PC minimum and recommended system requirements, and a surprisingly light 102 GB storage requirement. Call of Duty has for years now had an enormous storage footprint, which ballooned out of control when Activision forced the installation of battle royale Warzone alongside the mainline Call of Duty games. For Black Ops 6, however, Activision has changed its approach so that Warzone is a separate download on PC, which has resulted in the more manageable 102 GB SSD storage requirement. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 PC Preload...
XDefiant, Ubisoft’s free-to-play Call of duty rival, has missed the publisher’s expectations since launching in May — that much CEO Yves Guillemot admitted during a recent financial call. But are there plans to shut the game down? Not so, its chief developer has insisted. Rumors began circulating this week that support for XDefiant could come to an end after Season 4, which closes out XDefiant's Year 1 roadmap, if its player count failed to improve. Ubisoft has yet to announce player numbers or revenue figures for XDefiant, with Guillemot promising to say more at the end of October. Now, XDefiant executive producer Mark Rubin, who works at Ubisoft’s San Francisco development studio, has responded to those rumors, insisting the...
