Of all the things I saw in my time playing Remnant 2, by far the coolest parts were the procedurally generated worlds I spent my time battling my way through. Like the first game, this soulslike sequel creates a fresh set of areas and enemy spawns for each player, so your time fighting the enemies of humanity feels bespoke and unique. But where Remnant: From the Ashes mostly changed up the rooms and enemy spawn points depending on what you rolled, Remnant 2 designs its randomization to change up absolutely everything: from the biome and enemy types within it to the bosses you face – even the NPCs and storylines you encounter along the way. One area I saw in my time with Remnant 2 was Yaesha, which returns from the first game but has...
6 Things You Need to Know Before Starting KartRider: Drift Season 1
After launching in 2004, Nexon’s KartRider series became an immediate hit in Asia. It gained a huge following, with an official league starting a year later in 2005. Its popularity grew, amassing over 380 million players on PC alone. Its characters, gadgets, game modes, and approachable gameplay have made the multiplayer kart racing a hit over the last 19 years. KartRider: Drift, the newest game in the KarRider franchise, has taken inspiration from past titles and leveled up with new game modes, more customization, and upgraded visuals courtesy of Unreal Engine 4. Season 1 is finally here, and players can dive in for free on PlayStation and Xbox consoles, mobile (iOS and Android), Steam, and the Nexon Launcher. This means racers from...
Whenever I’m asked what my favorite roguelike is, my answer is confidently and unabashedly Dead Cells. That’s been true across five years of superb content updates, and it’s even more true with the arrival of its latest paid DLC, Return to Castlevania. This sizable expansion expertly remixes the base game and Konami’s classic action-platformer series – one of Dead Cells’ biggest inspirations – into something that feels wonderfully and wholeheartedly its own. Its more traditional story structure is less mysterious than the connect-the-dots style we’ve seen in the past, and it's immediately clear how much work has gone into bringing Castlevania's iconic characters, weapons, music, and locations into Dead Cells’ world. It puts the castle...
The humble controller is arguably the most important part of any console experience. From time to time, you have to replace Old Faithful. Maybe because it's served you for far too many years and has succumbed to wear and tear. Maybe it's new, but was poorly built and drifts harder than a P-plater with cashed up barrister parents. Or maybe it's because you yeeted it through a TV (and the load-bearing brick beyond) when a save file corrupted. All valid reasons. Choose your own adventure there. Following Microsoft and Nintendo's agreement to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo platforms for at least a decade, Microsoft has further detailed its plans for Call of Duty on Nintendo Switch. In a filing submitted to the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (via The Verge), Microsoft revealed that it believes the free-to-play Warzone and Call of Duty's full premium releases can both have a home on Nintendo's hybrid console. "The game engine that powers Warzone is mature and has been optimized to run on a wide range of hardware devices (ranging from the Xbox One console released in 2015 up to the Xbox Series X)," part of the filing reads. "Warzone supports PC hardware with GPU cards that were released as far back as 2015 (i.e., prior...

Spoilers for The Last of Us HBO Episode 8 - When We Are In Need. Read our review of the episode here. Troy Baker loves The Last of Us, and being such a vital part of the series there was no way he’d pass up getting involved with the hit HBO live-action adaptation. “I would be happy if I’d just been a clicker,” Baker tells IGN in a post-episode interview. Well, Baker isn’t a Clicker in The Last of Us HBO series, he plays James, a member of David’s survivors in the penultimate episode of The Last of Us season one. “Neil and Craig came to me and said, "We have a role for you." And Neil was like, "It's James,"’ says Baker on how he first got involved with the HBO series. “And I went, ‘Oh dude… who's James?’ Like, ‘Oh, right, buddy boy...
Eight years after Bloober Team formally became known as a horror game developer, the studio is preparing for another shift, though it’s admittedly a touch less radical. It wants its games to start competing with industry giants of horror and adjacent genres like Resident Evil, The Last of Us, and Hellblade, and it’s starting with the remake of Silent Hill 2. Speaking to IGN at DICE Summit 2023, Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno says it wants to change the way it tells stories. He wants to move beyond games that lean on simple mechanics typically found in “walking simulator” games – a term that Babieno acknowledges still attracts undeserved derision from gaming audiences. Instead, he wants Bloober to be making games with larger scopes...
Sony is worried that Microsoft could sabotage PlayStation versions of Call of Duty if Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard were to be approved. As first reported by The Verge, Sony submitted documentation to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority saying that Microsoft could do a variety of moves to make the Call of Duty franchise on PlayStation unappealing to play on. This includes things such as raising the price of the games, prioritizing the development of the Xbox version, or releasing a buggy build of the games on PlayStation. “Microsoft might release a PlayStation version of Call of Duty where bugs and errors emerge only on the game’s final level or after later updates. Even if such degradations could be swiftly...
Clearer skies are ahead for the Resident Evil 4 remake, as Capcom said there's a patch in the works to diminish the extreme rain effects. In an interview with Press Start Australia, Resident Evil 4 producer Hirabayashi Yoshiaki addressed fan concerns about the overbearing weather. “We’ve seen everyone’s reaction to the rain effects, and we are working on a day-one patch to make adjustments,” Yoshiaki said. Fans first noticed Resident Evil 4's extreme rain in a Game Informer gameplay video. The vertical slice of the game took place shortly after Leon and Ashley escape the church, and it showed the pair working their way through a cemetery. Heavy rain was falling during the gameplay, and while it was probably intended to enhance the...
Chucklefish and Robotality have announced Wargroove 2, a sequel to the Advance Wars-inspired strategy game for PC and Nintendo Switch. The game does not have an official release date yet. As reported by Nintendo Life, Wargroove 2 takes place in a beachy region named Aurania and will have three campaign arcs with a storytelling approach similar to that of Fire Emblem: Three Houses. It has new features such as Conquest, which is a roguelike single-player mode, as well as new commanders and unit types to control, an improved map, campaign, and cutscene editors. Commanders have a unique skill called a Groove that promise to change the pace of a battle, as players can supercharge their Groove ability to unleash an even more powerful...
Rare’s multiplayer role playing pirate extravaganza Sea of Thieves is getting its own tabletop board game, courtesy of Steamforged Games. As reported by Polygon, Sea of Thieves: Voyage of Legends will see two to four players compete to upgrade their ships, hire crews, hunt treasure, and sell cargo at outposts as they strive to outdo one another and crown themselves the Pirate Lord. Steamforged Games is responsible for creating a range of tabletop adaptations based on popular gaming franchises including Dark Souls and Resident Evil. Adaptations of Monster Hunter: Rise and FromSoftware’s hit 2022 title Elden Ring are also on the way. “From a creative perspective, Sea of Thieves’ distinctive art style has been a real pleasure to work...
In 2008, a handful of frustrated developers at a tiny, Quebec-based Ubisoft subsidiary (of sorts) called Longtail Studios led a valiant, if doomed, unionization attempt that was well ahead of its time. In recent years, unionization in the games industry has become a hot topic. Multiple games companies have unionized, either in part or as a whole, and the overall attitude toward unions industry-wide (as measured by the annual Game Developers Conference survey, at least), has slowly become more positive. This wave of interest in unions comes as a possible solution to growing concern about games industry working conditions, amid reports that multiple major AAA companies foster toxic work environments, crunch lasting weeks or even months...
Bethesda has delayed Starfield once again, as the game will now launch in September for PC and Xbox Series X and S. There will also be a Starfield Direct on June 11, right after the Xbox Games Showcase. In a new official launch date announcement trailer (below), Bethesda’s Todd Howard confirmed that the highly anticipated game will release this year “We have poured ourselves into this game and even I’m surprised how much we can pour. It is large. We’re playing the game all the time,” he explained. The Starfield Direct in June will provide a deep dive into the game, as Howard continued: “There’s so much that we still have to show you. The game has many of the hallmarks that you'd expect from us, but it’s also a very unique...
Wayfinder does not intend to be a brainless loot-grind or a dispiriting digital roulette wheel. Digital Extremes, the studio behind Warframe publishing this new fantasy RPG, is aware of all the pitfalls that tend to sink modern multiplayer games; how, more often than not, it feels like the designers are actively trying to take advantage of its players. But after a few hours with the game, and a gaggle of rollicking dungeon crawls and hubzone idle time, it's clear that Wayfinder is trying to harken back to a more wholesome age of cooperative monster slaying. If you too grew up on World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, and Final Fantasy XI, Digital Extremes intends to bring you home. In its most simple definition, Wayfinder is an MMO. Players...
Today's a great day to join the sim racer circuit. Controllers are nice — especially if you're rocking that Dual Sense Edge action — but I feel you're more likely to blow doors off opponents with a wheel. The G29 is more than mustard in this regard. As is the G920 on Xbox (also going for 200 off). Neither will last at these prices, so best start your engines. This Day in Gaming. - Tony Hawk's Project 8 (PSP) launch, 2007. Lince Works, the studio behind Aragami and Aragami 2, is closing its doors next month and pausing development on all future projects indefinitely. Today, Lince Works announced its impending closure via a post on Twitter. "We have some important news to share with you," the post reads. "It is with deep regret that we have to announce that Lince Works will effectively stop the development of new projects indefinitely, starting this April." The post explains that the studio's development of new IPs and its new path as a company were difficult, and "the economic context was not favorable." "It breaks our hearts to know that all the work we have done for the past year will ultimately not come to a completion." "Although we may be...
Halo Infinite's third season starts today, and 343 is touting the launch as the starting point for a consistent stream of content moving forward. In a post on Xbox Wire, 343's head of live performance, Sean Baron, addressed the long seasons players have endured in the past, saying the studio is looking to avoid those problems with Season 3. “In our preview of Season 3, I said that this is the beginning of what seasonality is for Halo Infinite," Baron said. "But ‘seasonality’ is restrictive. To me, seasonality is really about consistency – we need to be consistent in everything. I feel very confident with where we’ve gone with Season 3, and I have very strong confidence that we’re going to be able to keep improving that consistency...
Electronic Arts announced that it is partnering up with the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) to bring all 12 teams in the league to FIFA 23. It is coming to all platforms on March 15. “The NWSL’s integration into EA SPORTS FIFA 23 is a monumental milestone for the league, the players and millions of football fans around the world as we continue pushing boundaries for the women’s game,” said NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman in a statement. EA Sports added vice president Andrea Hopelain added, "We’re passionate about EA SPORTS continuing to be a changemaker for women’s football, and our partnership with both the NWSL and the NWSLPA is another step we’re taking as an organization to advance the sport." She continued, "We’re...
Somehow, Asher Mir has returned. With the launch of Destiny 2: Lightfall, players are diving into the game's story and unearthing some hidden clues about where the story could go next. In a surprise detail hidden in one of Lightfall's activities, one of Destiny 2's more memorable supporting characters, the Awoken Warlock Asher Mir, makes a quick cameo — and most players have likely missed it. Thanks to some Destiny 2 fans on social media and content creators on YouTube, the community has uncovered evidence of Asher Mir's return in the game's plot. Hidden in the Partition activity on Neomuna, which sees guardians explore a repurposed Vex network, Asher Mir's digital self is located on a hidden platform, and he signals to the player to...
It has been a week since Destiny 2: Lightfall dropped, and players are still getting accustomed to the complex Strand subclass and the inner workings of the Neomuna's activities. While some early launch bugs were to be expected, one issue, in particular, is causing some problems for players, and it is currently casting doubt on the success of the upcoming launch for the new raid. Since launch, players have been taking their time to explore Destiny 2's new expansion and updated features — and some parts of the community have been vocal about their disappointment with Lightfall. However, some players have encountered a particular bug that causes all teammates to appear nearly invisible. This quirk gives affected players a...

As you fight your way through the unforgiving hordes of Remnant 2’s procedurally generated soulslike levels, you’re going to need bullets – and a whole lot of them. And that’s where the Gunslinger archetype comes in. With a six-shooter at their hip and enough lead to bury an army of baddies, this western-themed outlaw makes ungodly levels of DPS their calling card. After going hands-on with the Gunslinger myself, I pulled out the spitoon and took a seat at the campfire with principal designer Ben Cureton to talk about the Gunslinger’s marauding ways. “So the Gunslinger in Remnant 2 is all about weapons,” Ben told me. “They're the master of weapon handling, fire rate, and ammo generation. And the fantasy for the gunslinger is they're...
Former Riot Games executives have launched a new studio called Believer to create a next-generation open world game based on an original IP. The Believer Company’s leadership team includes former Riot Games vice president Michael Chow as CEO and former executive producer of League of Legends and Riot co-founder Steven Snow as chief product officer. Believer has secured $55 million in funding to build its development team and first project, which it promised to be a “next-generation open-world game, anchored by an original IP, [with] stories where player choices matter, and gameplay systems that bring players together rather than pushing them apart.” The company’s motto, Credo In Lugos, means “I believe in games”, which Believer...

You'll be able to play Redfall with your friends no matter what platform you're playing on, as developer Arkane has confirmed crossplay for all platforms. On Twitter, the official Redfall account confirmed crossplay between Xbox Series X|S, PC Game Pass, Steam, and Epic Game Store. The developers also confirmed that crossplay will work on Xbox whether you buy the full game or access it through Xbox Game Pass. Crossplay has become a regular occurence for first-party Xbox games, as we've seen the feature implemented in big releases like Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5. The news of Redfall's crossplay support originally came in a Q&A with the developers, where Arkane also addressed difficulty scaling. "Depending on the size of your...
While Hogwarts Legacy has been out for some time on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, it has been delayed once more on PS4 and Xbox One to May 5, 2023. The news was shared on Hogwarts Legacy's Twitter account and it was confirmed that the original April 4 date for PS4 and Xbox One was just not enough time for the team to deliver the "best possible experience." "We’re overwhelmed with gratitude for the response to Hogwarts Legacy from fans around the globe," Hogwarts Legacy's Twitter wrote. "The team is working hard to deliver the best possible experience on all platforms and we need more time to do this. Hogwarts Legacy will launch for PS4 and Xbox One May 5, 2023." There was no mention of the Nintendo Switch version in this post, so...
Double Fine Productions CEO Tim Schafer has touched the development of a lot of video games, so it’s natural that he’s hard-pressed to pick a favorite. But his answer is ultimately driven by one of Schafer’s most closely-held values: the importance of being present with other people. I’m asking Schafer about his favorite projects at an opportunity ripe for reflecting on his industry impact: DICE Summit 2023 in Las Vegas. We spoke just hours before he was inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame, in recognition of his over 30-year impact on the games industry. This honor puts him on a roster of past winners including Ed Boon, Connie Booth, Bonnie Ross, Todd Howard, Hideo Kojima, and many others...
