Revealed today at the Xbox Games Showcase, Spiritfarer developer Thunder Lotus Games showed off its next project, 33 Immortals, coming to Xbox and PC sometime in 2024. This raid-focused co-op roguelike allows 33 players to band together in top-down action, with a blog post describing it as a "pick-up and raid" experience with matchmaking that's easy to jump into. The debut trailer showed that huge team facing off against massive waves of enemies and giant bosses alike. While it is a rogulike, the post also says that you will be able to "expand your arsenal and equip powerful new relics to permanently upgrade your soul," so it sounds like there is some roguelite progression mixed in there as well. 33 Immoritals is a very different...
South of Midnight, a brand-new IP from We Happy Few and Contrast developer Compulsion Games, was announced at today's Xbox Showcase. The cinematic trailer was pretty mysterious, just showing off some gorgeous American South vibes with a touch of magical realism. Xbox revealed more in an interview posted on its blog today, saying it's a third-person action-adventure that will follow Hazel, who was introduced in the trailer, as she tracks down supernatural creatures that have spilled into the world. It'll take place in a fictionalized swathe of the U.S. inspired by “the more interesting geological, topographical, cultural, societal, historical areas of the South," creative director David Sears said in the Xbox blog post. Hazel, who...

CD Projekt Red has shared the first major look at Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, the DLC expansion that's now slated to release on September 26. Revealed at Xbox Games Showcase with an announcement by Keanu Reeves, who will reprise his role as Johnny Silverhand in the expansion, the trailer shows off more action-packed missions throughout an entirely new area of the game's futuristic Night City. Phantom Liberty marks the debut of Idris Elba's Cyberpunk character, which was revealed last December. Elba's Solomon Reed will help players "fulfill an impossible mission of espionage and survival". CD Projekt Red announced Phantom Liberty last September, along with the reveal that the DLC was only coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series...
Right before the Starfield Direct, Bethesda Game Studios provided a new trailer of Starfield, showing us a better look at the game as well as some gameplay. Outside of another extended look at Starfield, Bethesda Game Studios promised that the upcoming open-world sci-fi RPG will still arrive on September 6, 2023. Starfield was originally set to launch on November 11, 2022, but Bethesda announced in May 2022 that it was delaying it into the first half of 2023. And then, in March this year, we got a second delay. While we are getting more Starfield news today, ahead of the Starfield Direct, Microsoft announced a new Starfield-themed Xbox external hard drive, now available for preorder. But days before today's event, images began to...
Persona 5 Tactica, a spin-off title that looks to be a grid-based tactical game similar to Fire Emblem or XCOM, has been announced with a gameplay trailer. It'll be available on Xbox consoles, PC, and Game Pass on Nov. 17, 2023. It was announced shortly after Persona 3 Reload, the much-anticipated remake of Persona 3. Unfortunately, both games leaked before the Xbox Games Showcase. This new spin-off features many of our favorite Persona 5 characters, but they appear in a more chibi art style. They also seem very confused and think they are in a palace of some sort. They don't have much time to think, however, as they are quickly attacked. Unlike Persona 5's turn-based combat, Persona 5 Tactica's battles look to be much more...
After first being announced in 2020, Forza Motorsport finally has an official release date of October 10, 2023. Forza Motorsport is the follow-up to 2017's Forza Motorsport 7 and the release date announcement arrived alongside a new gameplay trailer that showed off more of the game's detailed cars, adding in the Cadillac V-Series.R and the Corvette E-Ray for the first time. This new entry from Turn 10 Studios is said to feature a "generational leap in immersion" that will be achieved by realtime ray tracing, improved physics and vehicle destruction, and a full day-night cycle and weather system. We got our first look at true gameplay from Forza Motorsport in 2022, and in early 2023 we learned the game will have over 500 cars to...
Alongside announcing that Fallout 76 has seen 15 million players enter its wasteland, Bethesda has revealed the game's next Expedition will take players to casino-filled streets of Atlantic City. Bethesda shared these updates during the Xbox Games Showcase with a Road to Atlantic City trailer that also recapped a bit about what Fallout 76 offers to fans in terms of customization, enemies, weapons, housing, and more. We didn't learn too much about what exactly the Atlantic City Expedition contains, but the trailer gives a brief glimpse of a casino, a bar/restaurant called Quentino's, a shot of the boardwalk and Aquarium of the Atlantic, and a spooky alleyway with a monster. The trailer also confirmed the Atlantic City Expedition will...
Payday 3 officially has a release date, and it's headed to Game Pass on September 21. During today's Xbox Games Showcase, Starbreeze Studios showed off another look at the action-packed Payday 3 and announced its day one release on Game Pass. The trailer shows off more of the series' classic action-packed co-op FPS gameplay, with the original Payday crew (and their masks) returning once more to the franchise. Revealed at the end of 2022, Payday 3 is set in a "living, enormous" New York City. Compared to Payday 2, released 10 years ago, Payday 3 also features quite a few new topics, with cryptocurrency, mass surveillance, and even the dark web all playing a role. At the end of 2022, the CEO of Starbreeze said the game was "coming...
Sea of Thieves is finally meeting up with another big pirate game, Monkey Island, in a new expansion announced at today's Xbox Showcase. Xbox revealed more details about the collaboration with Lucasfilm Games in a blog post after the announcement, which billed it as a three-part Tall Tale expansion that will start rolling out on July 20. It'll be released in monthly installments, all of which will be free. Officially titled The Legend of Monkey Island, the expansion will feature characters - including Guybrush Threepwood, Elaine, LeChuck, Murray the Demonic Talking Skull - and voice actors from the classic adventure series. It's only the latest major pirate crossover to come to Sea of Thieves after its Pirates of the Caribbean...
Xbox finally shared a new look at Avowed, giving us a proper look at the upcoming RPG from Obsidian and a release window of 2024. Revealed as part of today's Xbox and Bethesda Showcase, the new look showed the game's world of Eora, some gameplay, fantastical monsters, and lots and lots of magical combat. It's a style that will be very familiar to fans of Obsidian's DNA games, with first-person melee and magic battles and, of course, dual wielding. But it's all cast in the brightly colored and vibrant environments in a section of Eora called "The Living Lands". In an Xbox Wire post, we learned more about what we just saw. The Living Lands has a variety of ecosystems, fantasy creatures, weird plants, and more. The trailer was narrated...
Fable fans have been waiting ever so impatiently for any news on the next-gen reboot of the beloved fantasy RPG franchise, and 2023's Xbox Games Showcase has finally delivered, with a reveal courtesy of The IT Crowd's Richard Ayoade. Xbox began teasing Fable's appearance at its showcase at the end of May, and we finally got to see gameplay, combat, and the classic Fable humor, as well as teases of plot including giants, vegetables, and...sandwiches? Yes, Ayoade seems to be in Fable in the role of "Dave," a vegetable enthusiast...a giant one, that the player climbs a beanstalk to confront. We'll have to wait for more details on that one. Unfortunately, we didn't get a release date for Fable today, but like Xbox's other first-party...
NetherRealm Studios shared the first gameplay trailer for Mortal Kombat 1, a new game in the famed fighting game series that will reset the timeline (again). While all your favorite characters like Scorpion and Sub-Zero are set to return, the new timeline means there’s a lot we still don’t know about these familiar faces. On the gameplay front, Mortal Kombat 1 is shaking things up with its biggest new mechanic yet: Kameos, which introduces a tag system to Mortal Kombat for the first time ever. With that in mind, we poured over the new trailer to see what new secrets we could glean from the gameplay trailer. Tag You’re It The big new gameplay reveal in the new trailer was Kameo, a new system where players pick a second character to...
STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl will skip the Xbox Showcase, its developer has confirmed. A post from a GSC Gameworld representative in the STALKER 2 Steam forum revealed the hotly-anticipated shooter sequel will miss June announcement events altogether, with information due in the upcoming months. “We usually do not announce or deny our participation in shows, but this one time we'll make an exception,” the post read. “STALKER 2 will miss the June online conferences preferring to make important announcements in the upcoming months. “Our plan is to give progressive updates on what we’re planning.” The news (or lack of it) comes three years after GSC Game World re-revealed the long-awaited STALKER 2 in 2020. STALKER 2 has seen a...

Sonic the Hedgehog has garnered plenty of success in over 30 years of his career: five animated series, two movies (with a third one on the way), a comic book series by two publishers, and a long-running video game series beloved by gamers of all ages — all culminating into a single mega multimedia franchise. Sonic has had some ups and downs, including the infamous 2006 game that was supposed to reboot the franchise, but now he’s back on the right track following the release of the open-world venture Sonic Frontiers, as well as the release of The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, the visual novel by Sonic Team’s beloved and comical social media department. With Sonic Origins Plus coming down the wire, adding more to the original...
Today, Wholesome Games held its 2023 Wholesome Direct, which featured a whopping 76 games all focused on delivering cozy atmospheres and compassionate messages. Plenty of new games were announced and even more received release dates, new trailers, or other updates throughout the fast-paced showcase. Here are 15 of our favorite games featured in the Wholesome Direct. Frogsong Frogsong, the adorable action RPG that takes place in a frog and bug-filled world, is officially out now. The game follows Chorus, a small tree frog who hopes to protect the world despite society’s expectations for other frogs of their size. In the words of Frogsong’s Steam page, it’s a “heartfelt adventure where it’s okay to be small.” During the Wholesome Direct...
Aerith dies. If you know one thing about Final Fantasy 7, it’s probably that Aerith dies. The praying girl gets cut down by the guy with the massive sword. There’s a reason why this pivotal story beat is one of the most well-known spoilers in gaming: it’s a moment that’s continually stunned players since 1997. Video games had killed off significant characters before Final Fantasy 7, but this was different. The resonance Aerith had with fans is incomparable, and the emotional impact of her death left many players desperate for a resurrection. Over 25 years, rumour became myth, myth became hoax, and eventually hope became a way to genuinely save the flower girl from Midgar. This is the inside story of the players who re-wrote fate and...
Hosted by the creator-led organization Glitch (and its android VTuber host Melios), Future of Play Direct highlights upcoming indie games every year. This year’s showcase featured updates and galaxy premieres of nearly 40 titles, with games ranging from 3D sci-fi base builders to side-scrolling pixel horror games and nearly everything in between. Here are 10 of our favorite games featured in this year’s Future of Play Direct. Hermit and Pig Featuring an adorable pixel art style, Hermit and Pig follows two unlikely heroes — a reclusive hermit and his truffle-hunting pig — on a mission to fight an evil corporate plot while dealing with social anxiety. Its action-packed first trailer shows off traditional turn-based combat, foraging, and...
Like a low-budget, fan-made sequel to a classic movie, Greyhill Incident eagerly incorporates all the worst parts of the genuine article, neglects all of the best parts, and has nothing original to say of its own. This lifeless horror game is so barebones that it manages to make something as exciting as an alien invasion feel more like a visit from the in-laws, with all of the same wasted time and low-stakes hiding under beds. With a story and voice performances that are laughably bad, stealth gameplay that’s determined to disrespect your time as much as possible, bland environments, and all manner of weird bugs gunking up an already unenjoyable sequence of chores, Greyhill Incident offers very few reasons to recommend it. Even when...
The first annual Access-Ability Summer Showcase just aired, unveiling varying accessibility options and design practices across 15 upcoming and current titles. Created by accessibility consultant Laura Kate Dale, the showcase is the first of its kind dedicated exclusively to the disabled experience. Games like Bossgame: The Final Boss Is My Heart, Sniper Elite 5, Upheaval, and BLINNK and the Vacuum of Space are just some of the exciting and accessible examples that we’ll explore here. Boss Rushes and Romance Bossgame: The Final Boss Is My Heart (watch the segment here), developed by Lily Valeen explores the relationship between “two broke girlfriends who hunt devils to pay their rent.” Beyond rhythm-based gameplay, the story...
Cocoon opens with a beam of light. It descends from the sky, then impacts a mountain, illuminating a series of runes carved into the rock, then trails it down to a cocoon, which undulates and then opens. A tiny winged creature pops out. I didn't know who my new friend was or what he wanted, but I'd be spending the next hour with him. During that hour, Cocoon constantly surprised and delighted me. Cocoon defies easy description. It has no narrative to speak of, no dialogue, spoken or written, no text to read, and few cutscenes. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t any story. As I navigated through the craggy rocks and white sand of the starting area, I was interacting with ancient technology: moving platforms, disappearing stairs, even...

Bandai Namco has announced a closed network test for Tekken 8 takes place in July, with registration open now. Announced in a trailer (above), the PlayStation 5-only test takes place from July 21 to 24, while users on all platforms (PS5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam), can sign up for a test due to run July 28 to 31. Players can sign up on Bandai Namco's website but registration will close after a few weeks on June 27, meaning those looking to play Tekken 8 (and test its servers) early should sign up sooner rather than later. The tests appear to give players a fairly comprehensive taste of the game, featuring a robust 16 character roster and five stages. Also hitting all the right notes for fighting game fans, Tekken 8 director...
The Xbox Showcase takes place on June 11 at 10 am PT/1pm ET and for a little fun we thought we’d take a stab at what we believe could make an appearance. Some of these are likely pie in the sky dreams, but that’s half the fun. Let us know what we got right and what we got wrong following the event. Ryan’s Predictions Fable I’ll take the layup to kick us off: I think we’ll get our first look at Fable gameplay! Fable was teased by the Xbox social media team on Twitter last week, so it seems likely that I’m going to see the thing I’m most excited about in the portfolio in just a few days! I can’t wait to see Playground’s take on this. And if it turns out that this is just a PC port or remaster of Fable 2 I’m going to riot. Quake Reboot...
It’s early days for Street Fighter 6 but fans are already working out character popularity with interesting results. Redditor geco_420 created a handy character popularity chart based on Capcom ID registration from the official Street Fighter 6 website, and it provides a snapshot of Street Fighter 6 online play as of June 8. So, who comes out on top? Ken has the biggest piece of the pie, beating out close friend and fellow projectile specialist Ryu. In third is Cammy, an already popular Street Fighter character boosted in Street Fighter 6 by a new, superb design. The heavy-hitting Marisa and Manon are fourth and fifth respectively, which is a strong showing for brand new characters. Typically, new characters aren’t the most popular...
Diablo 4 has been out for just over a week and developer Blizzard has revealed its most-played class. According to Diablo development chief Rod Fergusson, Diablo 4’s most-played class is the Sorcerer/Sorceress. “Pssst!,” Fergusson wrote in a tweet. “I didn't ask for permission to share this but I thought you might be interested to know that right now, the number one most played class in Diablo 4 is the Sorcerer/Sorceress! “But you didn't hear it from me. In case someone from PR or Marketing asks…” That’s as of June 9, but with a surge of players expected this weekend, the data may soon change. Diablo 4 launched with five classes: the aforementioned Sorcerer/Sorceress, the Barbarian, the Necromancer, the Rogue, and the Druid...
