Larian Studios has released the second major patch for Baldur's Gate 3, aptly titled Patch #2, which promises to bring "substantial performance improvements". Announced on Steam, Patch #2 brings bug fixes, performance improvements, UI tweaks, a new epilogue scene for Karlack, and more. Larian also promised it is working on additional endgame scenes featuring other characters. Other highlights include the introduction of the Withers' Wardrobe of Wayward Friends, which lets players dismiss co-op party members from your campaign, a fix for potentially getting stuck in combat because a player character cannot be selected to end their turn, and new icons for equipped items. The patch note highlights are available to view below, with...
Leaked Starfield footage showing a "Boundary Reached" message caused a stir on the internet earlier this week, and IGN is here to tell you how that actually works in-game. Yes, a message appears when you venture too far on a planet in Starfield, but you really have to go out of your way to find it. If you walk in a single direction for about 15 to 20 minutes, a pop-up message appears saying you have reached the planet's boundary and have three options: Fast Travel to Ship, Open Planet Map, or Cancel the pop-up message (seen in the screenshot below). Opting for option three means you will be walking right into an invisible wall with the top right corner of the screen saying, "You Cannot Go That Way" (seen in the screenshot below)...
The rumors are true: Bethesda Game Studios’ latest project, Starfield, does not include support for Nvidia’s widely popular supersampling tech, Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS). The PC version for Starfield only includes support for one supersampling tech: AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), specifically the second iteration of FSR. Checking through Starfield’s PC Settings, as shown in the screenshot below, PC players can choose two upscaling options: FSR 2, FidelityFX Contrast Adaptive Sharpening (CAS), or turn off upscaling altogether. The PC settings also do not support Intel's supersampling tech, Xe Super Sampling (XeSS). The FSR exclusivity should not be too much of a surprise, given AMD and Bethesda struck an...

Whether you are trying to sell, buy, trade, or transfer items, inventory management in Starfield is cumbersome. Unlike how Fallout: New Vegas or Fallout 4's inventory works, where you see on display both your current inventory and the inventory of the NPC, barter, or storage unit, only one inventory is displayed at a time. This makes it a bit cumbersome when trading, buying, or selling gear, especially when you are over your character's storing capacity and trying to figure out what to keep elsewhere to lighten your load. As you can see in the image above, the inventory management in Starfield has one end of the screen showing your or the storage bin, NPC, or barter's inventory, which you can toggle with the press of the button. In...
I feel like I’m the kind of person Starfield was made for. I loved Bethesda’s last single-player RPG, Fallout 4 (maybe a bit too much), and there’s nothing I like more than a sci-fi universe with spaceships, lasers, and political intrigue flying every which way. And yet, a dozen hours into Starfield, I was feeling lost in space. Things never went too far off course while I was flying my rinkydink little ship around chasing down mysterious artifacts and war criminals with a damn fine crew of companions at my side, but man did Starfield make me work hard to get through that opening stretch. Even when it mostly righted the ship and I was loving the story, sidequests, and launching boarding parties on enemy ships, there were still too many...
Beyond Good & Evil might be coming to modern platforms soon as a ratings board has listed an anniversary edition of the game. As reported by Gematsu, the Electronic Software Ratings Board (ESRB) has rated Beyond Good & Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The ESRB’s summary of the game calls it an action adventure game where players assume the role of a reporter who is accompanied by a pig-like companion. On the planet of Hillys, the two investigate a conspiracy by exploring fantasy locations, taking photos of evidence, solving puzzles, and fighting enemies. Ubisoft has not announced Beyond Good & Evil 20th Anniversary Edition officially so the release isn't...

CD Projekt Red choosing to make Phantom Liberty the only Cyberpunk 2077 expansion was a "technological decision", the developer has said. Speaking during CD Projekt's latest earnings call, senior vice president of business development Michał Nowakowski said shifting from REDengine, the developer's own game engine, to Unreal Engine 5 was a "key reason" in deciding only one expansion would be made. "As we have announced a long time ago, we're not going to make a second or third expansion", Nowakowski said when asked how many copies of Phantom Liberty would need to sell for CD Projekt Red to make more DLC. "This is the only expansion of the game, and it has nothing to do with the numbers and how satisfied or not we are with sales or...

CD Projekt Red is shifting a "big part" of its Cyberpunk 2077 team to The Witcher 4 (officially known as Polaris) once the Phantom Liberty Expansion launches in September. Speaking during CD Projekt's latest earnings call, president and CEO Adam Kiciński said the company is shifting more and more resources to the next Witcher game with a big development boost happening when main development on Phantom Liberty is complete. There are currently "250ish" developers working on Polaris, while even more are working on the Cyberpunk 2077 expansion. "After releasing Phantom Liberty we'll transfer a big part of the team to Polaris," Kiciński said. "Some remaining members will then focus on supporting other ongoing projects like Orion or Hadar...
A Baldur's Gate 3 player has figured out how to one-shot the final boss of Act 2 using nothing more complex than a large pile of gold, a special weapon, and a bit of reverse-thievery. Reddit's u/GoldenThane shared their strategy on the Baldur's Gate 3 subreddit yesterday. Their post does contain spoilers, so first we'll give you a spoiler-free explanation of what they did. Basically, GoldenThane used a weapon called Twist of Fortune that's available elsewhere in Act 2. The morning star has, among other abilities, a Weapon Action called Blood Money that deals an extra 3 piercing damage per 300 gold that the target possesses. So to one-shot the boss, they "reverse pickpocketed" them before the fight to dump 15,000 gold into their...
Larian Studios recently confirmed that Baldur's Gate 3, its surprise hit RPG due out soon on PS5, will also be out on Xbox before the end of 2023. That leaves a lot of room for the release date, so we took a moment to ask director Swen Vincke when fans can expect Larian's RPG on Xbox. "It's 2023. And 2023 is narrowing, so it's already pretty precise in my book. Between September and November... So, as fast as we can honestly," Vincke said. Vincke says that Larian Studios is currently prioritizing the release of the PS5 version, which is due out in a couple days, as well as the patches for the PC version. After that, Larian Studios will shift over to the Xbox version. "So the Xbox Series X version was already in good shape last time...
Blackbird Interactive, the developer behind Homeworld 3, announced today that it has laid off more than 40 employees after several of its upcoming projects have been canceled. The news was first made public on LinkedIn (spotted first by X user @bogorad222) by James Marshall, who is a Technical Artist at Blackbird Interactive. Marshall noted that over 40 people were laid off, and IGN could independently confirm that 41 employees were let go by the studio. In a statement sent to IGN, a spokesperson for Blackbird Interactive confirmed the studio had layoffs and that 41 employees were impacted. Blackbird Interactive was founded in 2007. As noted on GamesIndustry.biz's website, Blackbird was founded by senior members who previously...
Datamining can provide an interesting window into a developer's intentions for a game. However, such info can be lead to inaccurate conclusions, as seems to be the case with Baldur's Gate 3. Speaking with IGN, director Swen Vincke talked about the various content that has been unearthed by fans, including the removal of certain epilogues and cuts to the city of Baldur's Gate, saying that information found through datamining can be "misleading." He also dispelled rumors that content had been removed in order to make the earlier launch date. "We had actually been locked in for quite some time on what was going to be in the game because these games are too large to make big decisions like that and cut things two weeks before release,"...

Space Marine 2 has a new, explosive nine-minute gameplay video keen Warhammer 40,000 watchers are sure to get a kick out of. Saber Interactive’s Space Marine 2 has so far shown off the relentless alien Tyranids as the primary enemy facing Lieutenant Titus and his Ultramarine brethren as they battle to save the Imperial Jungle World Kadaku from disaster. But this new gameplay video, below, teases the addition of Chaos forces to the game. The first tease comes from dialogue between the Ultramarines. We hear one Ultramarine ask: “Chairon, if we encounter Chaos forces…” Chairon replies: “You need not concern yourself with me, Lieutenant.” That dialogue sets up a tease at the end of the video, which confirms Chaos forces in Space Marine...
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 launches with in-game voice chat moderation powered by AI. Activision is using AI-powered model ToxMod from Modulate, which features real-time voice chat moderation, to combat toxic behaviour. The tech uses AI to identify in real-time and enforce against toxic speech including hate speech, discriminatory language, and harassment. Call of Duty already uses text-based filtering across 14 languages for in-game text (chat and usernames), and an in-game player reporting system. In an FAQ, Activision moved to reassure players by insisting voice chat is monitored and recorded "for the express purpose of moderation", and "is focused on detecting harm within voice chat versus specific keywords". The new...

Imagine Dragons has released its official Starfield song, called Children of the Sky (a Starfield song). It’s “inspired” by Bethesda’s space role-playing game which launches early September. Frontman Dan Reynolds said: "The song, like the game, asks some of the most difficult questions we face as humans trying to find our place in the universe. Bethesda created iconic games we've been playing for most of our lives, and we're honoured to have collaborated on this song for Starfield." Starfield composer Inon Zur collaborated with Imagine Dragons on Children of the Sky. He said: “The band has created an amazing, emotional, and memorable song, and I joined them in crafting the Starfield motif into the song as well as iconic elements...
Amazon has announced the first expansion for its massively multiplayer online role-playing game New World. Rise of the Angry Earth launches October 3 priced $29.99 and introduces mounts, new progression, a level cap increase to 65, new gear rarity, new weapons, a transformed zone, and a new end-game expedition. There’s also a new Heartrune ability. “In Rise of the Angry Earth, the southeastern tip of Aeternum, formerly known as First Light, has fallen. Once a welcoming place for newcomers to Aeternum, the fields have been ravaged by the fury of Artemis and the Angry Earth. "No one is certain what has become of the people and villages that once populated the area, and a deadly barrier has kept all but the most intrepid from...
Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian has issued an official ‘Looking to the Future’ blog post that outlines a raft of changes coming to the game with the imminent Patch 2, including an update to the ending for everyone’s favourite Tiefling Barbarian. In the blog post, Larian said Patch 2 adds “better closure” to the story’s final act in the form of a more fleshed-out ending for Karlach, something “many of you have been asking for”. Karlach is one of the most-popular companions and romance options in Baldur’s Gate 3 (check out IGN’s Karlach Companion Guide for more). But some players expressed dissatisfaction with her ending. Brief Baldur’s Gate 3 Karlach spoilers ahead. Karlach is slowly dying from an infernal engine, which is housed...
One of the most memorable scenes from Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and Peter Jackson’s movie adaptation is the Fellowship’s brutal journey through the abandoned, once great Dwarven city of Moria. From Gandalf’s puzzle-solve to open the West Gate to the Fellowship’s dramatic battle against a cave troll in Balin's Tomb, from Gandalf’s dramatic last stand against the Balrog to the Fellowship’s last-ditch escape through the East Gate, Moria has cemented itself in the hearts and minds of Tolkien fans the world over as an iconic location within Middle-earth. Upcoming crafting and survival game The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, which is set in the Fourth Age (70 years after the destruction of the ring), revolves around the dwarves...
Konami has announced that it is delaying Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars. However, Konami didn’t specify a new release date. In a statement on its website, Konami said, "Regarding the planned release of Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars, we have reached the conclusion that despite the very best efforts of our dedicated development staff to release the Remasters in 2023, additional time is needed to ensure the quality performance and gameplay experience our users deserve.” Konami didn’t actually provide a new release date, just that the development team needs more time to work on the game. Konami also didn’t explicitly state that the remaster was delayed to 2024, but...

Baldur's Gate 3's next big patch is releasing soon, and by all accounts it will be a chonky one, featuring a host of performance improvements and other fixes. Even better, Patch 2 will apparently address Minthara, who has been hobbled by what director Swen Vincke describes as a "very, very stupid bug." Speaking with IGN ahead of Patch 2's release, Vincke talked about how the scope of Baldur's Gate 3 can cause cascading reactions that can sometimes lock out content by accident. Such is the case with Baldur's Gate 3's drow murderess. "The game is super reactive and there were a couple of bugs that caused some of the companions to not react as they should. And so that felt like the content was not showing up. So you weren't seeing it...
Sonic Superstars is shaping up to be the biggest Sonic game of the year partly because of the new 2.5D aesthetic for Classic Sonic. However, Sonic Team suggests Classic Sonic's new look may be permanent, as they believe pixel art won't be a viable style for Sonic in 10 to 20 years. According to a report from GamesRadar, Sonic Team creative officer and producer Takashi Iizuka said at Gamescom that Sonic Superstars is "an evolution of the 2D Sonic gameplay," but doesn't believe that 2D pixel art will survive as a video game art form for the franchise within the next two decades. This comment effectively throws cold water at the possibility of Classic Sonic fans seeing Sonic Mania 2 coming to light. "[W]e look at the pixel art — it's...
A Baldur's Gate 3 player has just shared their detailed notes from a playthrough of the game in which they tried to get the absolute worst story outcomes for every single character. All except for Scratch the dog. In a Reddit thread, u/Sparkism provided a detailed guide to ruining the day of every single Baldur's Gate 3 character systematically through all three acts. Surprisingly, this is more complex than it seems: while it may feel like the easiest way to do this is to just murder everyone, some characters actually have a better time if certain other characters are dead, so they had to get creative to make things as abysmal for everyone as possible. Warning: Light spoilers for act one of Baldur's Gate 3 are detailed below. Read on...
