Starfield players have already built ships based on famous craft from across science fiction, but this player did something else entirely — and may have created the most overpowered ship possible. Redditor Solace_of_the_Thorns worked out enemy ships target your ship’s midpoint, which is calculated by taking the distance the farthest two point on the X, Y, and Z axis intersect. Solace_of_the_Thorns wondered, what would happen if the AI shot at a ship without a midpoint? The answer is the “Fat L”, or the "L-Wing". The L-Wing is “effectively immune” to frontal damage, Solace_of_the_Thorns said, because the ship’s midpoint is above and to the left of the ship. That is to say, the L-Wing has an offset midpoint not within the ship, but...
Baldur’s Gate 3 launched on PlayStation 5 this week following its PC release in August, and the tech experts at Digital Foundry have delivered their verdict. According to Digital Foundry, Larian’s sprawling Dungeons & Dragons-themed role-playing game is an impressive port on PS5, and runs at a level equivalent to the PC version on ultra settings, the highest set of options available. As Digital Foundry pointed out, this isn't typical of most console games. The PS5 version lets you turn performance mode on or off. Both result in a 1440p resolution. Performance mode targets 60 frames per second and, according to Digital Foundry, for the most part the game hits that. As is the case with the PC version, in the PS5 version the city of...

The broadcast is set for 2am PT / 5am ET / 10am UK / 6pm JST, and will share progress on games from Xbox and Bethesda, showcase games from creators mainly from Japan and Asia, and make announcements of new games coming to Game Pass. “Players can expect to hear progress updates from Xbox and Bethesda Softworks and see a creatively diverse collection of games from creators predominantly located in Japan and across Asia,” Xbox chief marketing officer Jerret West said in a post on Xbox Wire. “We’ll also share exciting new games coming to Xbox Game Pass, which continues to grow with great content from teams all around Asia.” At Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest 2023, game...
Starfield offers you the option to choose three traits to build your character's identity beyond their background skills. Your playstyle preferences will define what you'll ultimately want to pick for a background (you can pick up any of the skills that come with the backgrounds later, though some characters will rarely refer to your background in conversations), but since traits can't be added after you've begun your game you'll want to choose those wisely. Here are our team's favorites: Kid Stuff - Get free stuff from your parents! Well, you're technically paying them every week, but there's no way the amount you give them would add up to the cost of what they give you. The weapons and other items they offer early on are helpful and...
Making money, or credits, in Starfield can take a lot of time if you don't take advantage of some of Starfield's more disreputable activities. The easiest of these is finding and selling contraband. As far as we've seen possession of these yellow-marked items has no impact on companion relationships, and unless it's a UC or Freestar Collective scanner, no one really cares if you have it. Contraband are illicit items like harvested organs found in enemy buildings and ships and locked up in security stations. Upon entering the space around major settled systems locations the local security will scan your ship upon entry in search of contraband. The only way to hide it is by having shielded cargo or by fast-traveling out of the area in...
Thank your own personal deity — possibly Freya — it's Friday. The big score today has got to be Football Manager 2023 going for nada, if you sign up for a free (and rather cancellable) Prime Gaming subscription. I'm also still all about sinking the entire weekend into Starfield, a game you'll find cheaply below. Ed Boon, the co-creator of Mortal Kombat, brought the heat on a Sept. 7 episode of Hot Ones during a conversation about Mortal Kombat 1, showing off the first look at Johnny Cage's Jean-Claude Van Damme skin. It marks a rare appearance for a video game personality on the hit YouTube series, which mostly features film, TV, and music celebrities as they attempt to eat wings that gradually get spicier while making it through an interview. Boon did the same, and he and Hot Ones host Sean Evans had plenty to talk about in regards to Mortal Kombat 1. One new addition that's been decades in the making is the inclusion of Jean-Claude Van Damme in the form of a Johnny Cage skin, which will be available for players who purchase the...
I have been playing Starfield for a few weeks now, and there is plenty of opportunity for customization, from the character creator tool to changing your clothing appearance and even customizing the outside of your ship. But today I learned that you can also design the interior of your ship's console by adding items on there as decor. Reddit user, Fabulous_Hedgehog839 posted a video on r/Starfield where he shared this helpful tip: you can place items like a plushie onto your ship's console. It's akin to having decorations like an ornament for your car dashboard. Cute and charming, especially if you are in first-person mode while flying your spaceship. Of course, the items will disappear if you change your primary ship or edit the...
While bugs in new games are far from uncommon, Bethesda Game Studios has a certain reputation for them - especially for those that happen to be both harmless and hilarious (there are more than a few compilations of the funniest Skyrim bugs out there). Starfield, while being less buggy than other Bethesda releases, most certainly still has a few, and a lot of them are predictably absurd. Users on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and the Starfield subreddit have been posting all about the funny bugs and glitches they have encountered as they venture across the Settled Systems. Some on Reddit have reported, for example, watching NPCs missing half their bodies while standing in their ship; some see characters randomly floating...
Madden has a bug problem, and despite a patch that addressed several stability issues in late August and another that released on September 1st, there’s still a lot wrong with EA’s football sim – and some of it stems from last year’s release. The biggest problems seem to be found in Franchise mode, which has been something of a sore spot among the Madden faithful. Franchise has long lagged behind similar modes in other sports sims. At the moment, Madden fans are most vocal about Franchise’s draft class bug. This bug only seems to affect players importing or downloading draft classes. Generic draft classes don’t have this problem, but it seems to affect every imported or downloaded draft class after a certain point. What happens...
If you're playing Starfield on PC — specifically via the Microsoft Store or through PC Game Pass — it's important to note you might run into some issues if you intend to mod one of those versions. Several users on Steam, NexusMods, and Reddit have pointed out the issues with the Microsoft Store and Game Pass versions of Starfield. The problem is that the Script Extender mod or more complex mods that require Script Extender to be installed won't work, though basic mods work just fine on those versions. The modder who created the Starfield Script Extender mod, ianpatt, pointed out in the comments that it would not work on the Game Pass Version or the Microsoft Store. "No, you can't just jam the DLL in to the Game Pass version and...
PAX West was back in full force in 2023. As one of North America's largest video game shows, the popular fan convention allows the gaming audience to sample some of the next big games, and smaller surprises, set for release this Fall and in 2024. With other adjacent events happening during PAX West 2023, such as Nintendo Live and The Mix's Media Indie Exchange, the offerings this year featured a wide breadth of pulse-pounding action games and other titles that went for a more cozy and chill vibe to help set a different mood. In this roundup of cool games, we're spotlighting some of the most exciting and eye-grabbing games we saw during PAX West 2023 and other adjacent events. Square Enix has "no plans" to make Final Fantasy 14 free to play even though a lot of the game already is. Speaking to Eurogamer, director Naoki Yoshida made clear the game will continue to require a monthly subscription for the time being. That being said, Square Enix is also likely to continue expanding the already lengthy free trial. "I believe the free trial will continue to be expanded, but we have no plans of making the client itself free at the moment," Yoshida said. "Since a huge amount of time and money has been invested in the expansion packages, the revenue from sales of the expansion package itself is still very important in order to continue to make expansions [like Dawntrail] on this scale. We would like to constantly...
Starfield players are a creative bunch, and when they're not filling spaceships full of potatoes or building New Atlantis in Lego, they're using the robust character creator to recreate a bunch of famous faces. These include Willem Dafoe, David Bowie, somehow more than one character from Shrek, and many more, with players taking to social media to share their creations. You can view them all in the slideshow below. "You know, I'm something of an industrialist myself," reads a post from strider390 on Reddit, who posted a screenshot of his Industrialist Willem Dafoe-looking character while referencing the classic Spider-Man meme. SoullessVoid created Starman himself, David Bowie, while CheesyWales made one of the creators of Starfield...
Warning: Full Spoilers for Starfield follow I’ve already hit Starfield’s credits screen four times. Not because I can’t get enough of playing Bethesda’s latest grand-scale RPG, but because I find the concept that powers its new game plus mode to be completely intriguing. Not to sound too much like Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar, but where I once thought I’d be losing dozens of hours exploring places in this galaxy, it’s actually what takes place in one room that has captured my imagination most. I should probably first explain what exactly happens at the end of Starfield’s story and the beginning of a new game plus run. In the final moments of the main questline, you become a Starborn, a sort of guardian of the galaxy whose job...
Starfield is officially out, and modders have been working hard creating helpful add-ons, from useful, quality-of-life mods such as revamping the inventory UI to unofficially adding support for DLSS. Others have added more cosmetic things like reskin in-game clothes. And then there are some people out there who keep modding Bethesda's Todd Howard into the game. Several individuals have posted mods on NexusMods, replacing miscellaneous things with Todd Howard's face. One mod by ronaldmoon, for example, replaces every single portrait in the Constellation Lodge with a picture of Todd Howard. ScarClaw72's mod replaces the Starfield logo and splash screen with pictures of Howard. While GeraldMods replaces the flashlight texture with a...
Starfield hasn't been out a week yet but players have already discovered an infinite money exploit that's very similar to that in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. As reported by PC Gamer, YouTuber vNivara uploaded a video showing how players can access infinite amounts of credits by breaking into shop vendors' secret stashes, stealing all their wares, and then selling them back. This works the same as the main infinite money exploit in Skyrim, but is perhaps more likely to get patched out as it involves falling through the map instead of finding a sneaky stash under some rocks in Dawnstar. Players will need to prepare a little before accessing this area by obtaining the Power Boostpack mod and reaching Rank 2 in the Boost Pack Training...
Starfield mods can do anything from improve its systems to break the game, but installing one also turns off achievements — so someone modded that out. As reported by VG247, one player has now created a pretty major workaround for achievement hunters on Steam. Brunph on modding website NexusMods has created the aptly titled Achievement Enabler mod, which essentially allows endless meddling without any consequences. Without the mod, Starfield saves are very sensitive to exploits. Using console commands (a list of which can be found in IGN's Starfield guide) or installing mods essentially marks the player as a cheater, meaning any saves using them can no longer obtain Steam achievements. While it's unclear if the Achievement Enabler...
Payday 3 comes with a laundry list of decisions that players will have to answer quickly when walking into the next job. Mask off or on? Creep around corners and avoid armed confrontation or bust in guns blazing? Engage in a hostage negotiation to buy some time or power through as quickly as possible? After 10 years and more than 200 updates since the Payday gang infiltrated Washington, DC, and after acquiring a few new associates along the way, the crew is picking up where they left off and heading to the greater New York City metropolitan area for Payday 3 — even crossing the Hudson River for a sting in New Jersey. They may have learned a few more tricks of the trade, but it’s up to the player to utilize them effectively. And, more...
Starfield development chief Todd Howard had a fun response after an interviewer asked him why Bethesda hadn’t optimised Starfield for PC. The Bloomberg interviewer set up the question by saying they’d asked their viewers for questions for Todd Howard, and a “big question from many” was: “why did you not optimise this game for PC?” After a brief pause in which Howard looked a little nonplussed (Xbox boss Phil Spencer has a little laugh, too), an answer that cut to the heart of the issue: “We did. It’s running great. It is a next-gen PC game. We really do push the technology so you may need to upgrade your PC for this game. But it’s got a lot of great stuff going on in it and the fans are responding awesome.” The message is clear: if...
The voice behind a ton of iconic Bethesda characters from The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion to Fallout 3 has made a return in Starfield. As reported by PC Gamer, Wes Johnson appears in Starfield as Ron Hope, the CEO of HopeTech who sends players after a thief in the Where Hope Is Built side mission. You can read all about where to find his mission and how best to play it out in IGN's Starfield guide. Johnson is perhaps most known in the Bethesda realm for playing every member of the Imperial Watch in Oblivion, famous for screaming at the player: "Stop right there, criminal scum." He also played Prince of Madness Sheogorath and Lucien Lachance in Oblivion, alongside three Daedric Princes (Boethiah, Malacath, and Molag Bal) in The Elder...
It’s a debate as old as role-playing games themselves: should players have to deal with encumbrance? The recent release of Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 and Bethesda’s Starfield have thrust the encumbrance debate back into the headlines, with both games employing a system that restricts how much stuff you can carry. While each game employs systems and mechanics that let you carry more and more, it is inevitable that as a player, you’re going to have to spend a decent chunk of your time fussing with managing your character or characters’ carry weight limit. In Starfield’s case, encumbrance is a big enough issue for some that they are willing to lose access to gaining achievements in order to increase the carry limit via console commands...
Starfield is now available on PC and as an Xbox Series X and S console exclusive, but some players are really trying to pretend it's on PlayStation 5 too. From using the DualSense controller to play the game, to creating custom "limited edition" Starfield PS5s, and even modding in the PlayStation Studios intro, some users have seemingly taken Bethesda's Xbox exclusivity hard. Players can use the PS5's DualSense controller to play Starfield quite easily, of course, since the game is on PC and the DualSense is a fully supported gamepad there. Redditor aqkj questioned a Facebook advert showing a Starfield player using the PS5 controller before many fans commented they'd be doing the exact same with the PC version. Ironically, upon the...
One of the best things about playing Starfield on PC is the access to console commands. In Starfield, cheat codes are enabled via console commands, but they only work on the PC version of the game. These cheat codes let you do everything from spawning any item in the game to toggle god mode. Check out IGN’s Starfield console commands guide for a comprehensive rundown of how the cheats work. Xbox Series X and S owners, however, do not have access to console commands. But players have discovered a workaround that, while limited, does let console players get in on some of the cheating action. If you own Starfield on Xbox or Xbox Game Pass, you can download it on any PC for free via the Xbox App. Even if your PC is a potato (Starfield...
Bethesda's Starfield exceeded one million concurrent players across all platforms today, according to CEO of Microsoft Gaming Phil Spencer. "Thanks to all the players who helped us reach this great milestone and congrats to [Bethesda Studios]," the Xbox boss added alongside the news. Bethesda's sprawling space epic, which topped sales charts even before its official launch on September 6, has enjoyed a positive start to its life after launch. Players have been using Starfield's ship creator to recreate famous vessels from the likes of Star Wars, Serenity, and Star Trek, and many hidden references to other games like Skyrim have already been discovered. Savvy speedrunners have even figured out how to complete it in under three...

Skull and Bones is suffering yet another breach in the hull, as Ubisoft's long-delayed pirate game has lost another creative director. According to a report from Kotaku, creative director Elisabeth Pellen left Ubisoft Singapore to return to Ubisoft's Paris headquarters earlier this summer. Pellen had been working on Skull and Bones since 2018. This marks the third time Skull and Bones has lost a creative director. Kotaku's report also says Ubisoft Singapore is facing an organized labor campaign from Singapore's Creative Media and Publishing Union. “Five years ago, Elisabeth Pellen went to Ubisoft Singapore with a mission to reboot the creative direction of Skull and Bones,” an Ubisoft spokesperson told Kotaku. “She succeeded, and the...
Megan Fox is the voice of the vampire Nitara in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1, and NetherRealm Studios has shared a new trailer to unveil the roster's latest playable fighter. Nitara hails from the dark, desolate realm of Vaeternus, and she's joining the fight in Mortal Kombat 1 to protect her race of vampires. In kombat, she uses her claws, fangs, and aerial abilities. You can check out the new fighter in action in the trailer below. "She comes from this weird realm, she is a type of vampire creature," Fox explains in the video. "She's evil but she's also good. She's trying to save her people. I really like her. She's a vampire which obviously resonates for whatever reason. It's cool to be in the game, you know? Because I'm not...
