Venture to the Vile clicked with me the first time I switched layers to solve a puzzle. I was trying to get to a lever that would open a door farther in, but there wasn’t a lever in the area I hadn’t pressed, and none of the ones I had opened the door. Then I remembered that one of them had extended a bridge to an area in the background. So I walked back to the bridge, shifted to the layer in the background, worked my way to the lever, and bingo: one open door. I love it when a plan comes together.
Venture to the Vile is a 2D Metroidvania with a twist. It's set in a 3D world, and you can switch between areas in the foreground and background as long as you find a path to get you there. See something cool? You can probably go there...
CD Projekt Red will lay off around 30 more employees by the end of 2023 as development on Gwent: The Witcher Card Game winds down.
Revealed in a blog post on Gwent's website, CD Projekt Red confirmed that "about 30 remaining Gwent team members are going to part ways" with the studio.
This contradicts a statement from December when the developer told IGN that a small number of employees would be kept on to keep the game running while the remaining staff would be moved to other projects at CD Projekt Red.
A spokesperson told IGN that four team members will be laid off in June, with CD Projekt Red gradually increasing this number throughout the year until around 30 staff have been laid off in total.
"It’s never easy to say goodbye,"...

BKOM Studios and Paizo have launched a Kickstarter campaign for a co-op hack-and-slash action RPG based on the Pathfinder tabletop game.
Titled Pathfinder: Abomination Vaults, the Kickstarter says this is the first-ever hack-and-slash RPG based on the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. If funded, the title is set to come to PC via Steam.
Pathfinder: Abomination Vaults will support up to four players at a time, as they lead Pathfinder heroes through Gauntlight Keep in a mission to defeat the evil sorceress Belcorra Haruvex. The game will take place in a mega-dungeon beneath Gauntlight Keep that's separated into different biomes. Players can choose between four Pathfinder champions: Amiri the Barbarian, Harsk the Ranger, Kyra the Cleric, and...
Dragon Age writer David Gaider has shared his thoughts on the "lackluster" and "soulless" nature of procedurally generated AI dialogue, while also predicting failure for developers who can't forsee the technology's current limitations.
“Ah, yes. The dream of procedural content generation,” tweeted Gaider in reference to a new Guardian article discussing the potential applications of AI scriptwriting in future video games. “Even BioWare went through several iterations of this: ‘what if we didn't need every conversation to be bespoke?’ Unlimited playtime with dialogue being procedurally created alongside procedural quests!”
The Guardian article focused in part on a game demo called Smallville, which used an artificial intelligence...
Microsoft has announced its Xbox Games with Gold line-up for June 2023, with Adios and The Vale: Shadow of the Crown up for grabs next month.
As detailed on Xbox Wire, the two Games with Gold offerings for June will be available to anyone with Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, with Adios coming up first from June 1 to June 30 and The Vale: Shadow of the Crown following between June 16 to July 15.
Adios is a cinematic first-person game about sticking to a complicated moral decision. Players take on the role of a pig farmer who has decided that he no longer wants to dispose of bodies for the mob. What follows is a discussion between him and his would-be killer.
After that difficult conversation, you might want to close your...
It might not have created the genre, but fighting games wouldn’t be as important and popular as they are today without Street Fighter. This is a series that introduced the idea of combos, a six-button layout, and motion inputs for special moves. It also helped build a competitive scene for fighting games, it made the arcade scene rise in the 90s, and it revitalized the genre in the era of online play.
With each main entry, Street Fighter tried to create something new or focus in a new direction that would make other iconic fighting game franchises, such as Mortal Kombat or The King of Fighters, pay attention. However, the series surpassed its walls and became a cultural phenomenon, with its well-known roster appearing in different...
Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater was one of the biggest announcements from the recent PlayStation Showcase, and IGN had the chance to speak to the team behind the game to learn more about exactly what this remake is.
While the team wasn't ready to reveal everything about Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater, which doesn't currently have a release date, they were ready to talk a bit about if Hideo Kojima or Yoji Shinkawa had any involvement in the project, if there will be more remakes from the Metal Gear series, and more.
Who Is Making Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater, and Is Hideo Kojima Involved?
One of the biggest questions many had after the announcement was whether Metal Gear Solid 3 director Hideo Kojima was involved in the project...
Remember when Street Fighter 5 came out and a lot of people were disappointed by its distinct lack of meat on its bones? Street Fighter 6 is the polar opposite. Complete with an excellent 18-character roster of both new and returning fighters rendered in a killer new art style, an incredibly ambitious online Battle Hub that puts all other online fighting game lobby systems to shame, and just about everything you could ever ask for when it comes to training tools and systems to help you get better at fighting games, it’s a spectacularly feature-rich fighting game. Street Fighter 6 takes many swings in many different directions, and though not every blow connects, the ones that do are absolute knockouts.
The gameplay of every Street...
CD Projekt Red has revealed that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has sold over 50 million copies worldwide.
Furthermore, CD Projekt Red also confirmed that the series as a whole has surpassed 75 million copies sold. This includes 2007's The Witcher, 2011's The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, and 2015's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
CD Projekt Red is currently working on several games in The Witcher series, including Project Polaris, which is presumably The Witcher 4. It likely won’t be released until 2025 at the earliest as it only entered pre-production in March 2022. The studio is also working on a remake of the first Witcher game and has confirmed that it will feature an open world.
The Flame in the Flood developer Molasses Flood is also...
Diablo IV’s Hardcore mode now has even higher stakes – immortalizing the first 1,000 players to reach level 100 by adding their names to a statue of Lillith.
“Think you can cheat death?” asked Blizzard in a tweet (below). “Reach level 100 on hardcore mode and tweet #Diablo4Hardcore with proof to have your username immortalized on a statue of Lilith.”
Diablo’s infamous hardcore mode has the highest stakes of all – a single character death will permanently delete that character. But if you can rush through without succumbing to any of Diablo IV’s monstrous bosses, you could have your BattleTag immortalized forever.
As well as reaching Level 100 in hardcore mode, players will also need to submit proof, in the form of a photo or video...

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Dogstar attracted a sizable crowd with their set, which included songs from their back catalogue and their forthcoming album, generating plenty of cheers and even proclamations of love for "John Wick" throughout the afternoon.

When Diablo 3 was first revealed in 2008 the internet lost its collective shit. Thousands of fans signed petitions and rallied against the game, demanding that Blizzard made a change. Why? Because Diablo 3, in a departure from its predecessors, looked like a “cartoon.”
Prior to Diablo 3, Blizzard’s action RPG series had a distinctly gothic visual palette. The stones that walled the dungeons of Diablo 1 and 2 were dark, and the shadows in their crevices even darker. The light generated by flickering flames or bolts of magical lightning illuminated a grim fantasy world with a realistic texture. Well, at least as realistic as PCs of the late 1990s could render. Diablo 3, though, looked like a horror fantasy comic book. Its world glowed...

Daedalic Entertainment, the studio behind the long-delayed and poorly-reviewed The Lord of the Rings: Gollum that came out yesterday, appears to be working on another Lord of the Rings game — one that potentially features the franchise's iconic wizards.
According to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action of Germany website, as translated by IGN, Daedalic is working on another 3D action adventure game set within the Lord of the Rings universe that will "transport the player into a lush world full of mythical creatures and magic." The project is codenamed "It's Magic."
German-speaking magazine Games Wirtschaft pointed out that Daedalic Entertainment received roughly €2 million in funding from the German government...
In March, Minecraft revealed new details about its 1.20 Trails and Tales update, which emphasizes "self-expression through representation, storytelling, and worldbuilding." Now, the update finally has a release date.
Today, Minecraft made a blog post revealing that Trails and Tales will be downloadable for free on June 7. The blog post also delves into the details of the update, which introduces quite a few new mobs and blocks, as well as some minor changes catered toward storytelling.
Trails and Tales brings the long-awaited camel, which can fit two riders, and the sniffer, the "gentle giant" that the community voted for during Minecraft Live 2022. It also introduces two new wood sets: bamboo and cherry, the latter of which is found...

Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo have announced the first piece of DLC for Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. It’s called Battle of Zhongyuan and will launch on June 29.
The DLC includes a new story scenario, difficulty level, and weapon type, as well as new stages, enemies, and lore. Not many other specific details were revealed, aside from the key art depicting three Chinese warriors, but more information will be shared soon.
Zhongyuan is known as the “Central Plains” and refers to the North China Plan surrounding the lower and middle parts of the Yellow River. It's perceived as the birthplace of Chinese civilization.
The game will also receive two more DLC expansions later this year. Conqueror of Jiangdong is set to release in September, while...
A physical release for Alan Wake 2 might be possible after all as THQ Nordic has teased it's interested in publishing a hard copy of what was a digital only sequel.
THQ Nordic published the first Alan Wake game on PC and released a physical disc. “I mean... we did the disc version of Alan Wake for PC back in the day ICYMI,” THQ Nordic said on Twitter. “And just because one person (or company) does not love physical, there is plenty who still do. Give it some thought. We'd love to go at it again! Full circle and all.”
While this is far from a confirmation, THQ Nordic’s proposal gives a glimmer of hope for those wanting to get a physical copy of Alan Wake 2.
Earlier this week, Remedy Entertainment revealed the sequel would be a...
Bungie’s announcement of a reimagined Marathon as a PvP extraction shooter during the May 24 PlayStation Showcase was certainly a pleasant surprise. It was clear from comments on Twitter and in the live chat during the stream that there’s a whole generation of gamers unaware of the impressive 29 year legacy behind the name, and let’s face it: why would they be? Save for a free release designed to work on modern Macs, PCs, and Linux systems in 1999, an Xbox Live Arcade port of Marathon: Durandal in 2007, a port to iOS in 2011, and a bunch of easter eggs hidden in both Halo and Destiny (the Marathon symbol pops up all over the place in the first three Halo games, for example) the franchise has been left alone since the third game in the...

THQ Nordic has announced that the Alone in the Dark reboot is launching October 25 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC and that a free demo is available now.
Users on these platforms can download the playable prologue of Alone in the Dark to experience what the full game will have to offer without receiving any spoilers from the main story. The standalone demo puts players in the shoes of 11-year-old Grace Saunders as she runs an errand that quickly goes wrong.
The publisher also revealed that Stranger Things' David Harbour will star as one dual-protagonist Edward Carnby while Killing Eve's Jodie Comer will play the other, Emily Hartwood.
Players can choose to play through the story as either character, though THQ Nordic promises...

Survival Horror is a genre we take for granted, but back in 1992 a little game called Alone in the Dark really kickstarted the whole idea, giving us a taste of limited resources and investigative adventure against the odds. Now Pieces Interactive is remaking that classic in a star-studded, atmospheric take that promises to deliver the classic horror plot to modern audiences. Heading that up is Mikael Hedberg, writer and director of Amnesia and Soma, and between his answers and answers from publisher THQ Nordic at a press Q&A things are looking pretty promising as we gear up to return to the deeply haunted Louisiana Bayou around Derceto.
The big reveal is that Stranger Things actor David Harbour will be playing the role of detective...
Marvelous revealed today that it is working on several new games, including Rune Factory 6, Rune Factory: Project Dragon, a new Story of Seasons, and Daemon X Machina Titanic Scion.
Rune Factory 6 is currently in development and the game will take place in the western continent of Adonea. Rune Factory: Project Dragon is a spin-off set in the “Land of the East.” The latter's setting has been referenced throughout the series but was never shown. Project Dragon is inspired by Japanese culture and will represent the East while Rune Factory 6 represents the West.
The next Story of Seasons game will explore the theme of “experiences.” Series manager Hikaru Nakano said that the future entry is one where everyone can play with each other...
Developer Blackbird Interactive and publisher Gearbox have announced that Homeworld 3 has been delayed to February 2024. It was originally planned to launch during the first half of 2023.
“Our primary goal is to deliver a Homeworld experience that lives up to the standards set by its predecessors and is worthy of this series’ incredible legacy,” Blackbird and Gearbox explained in a statement on Twitter.
They continued, saying, “Homeworld 3 is shaping up to be exactly that, but in order to fully realize that vision we need more time to refine and polish the game.”
Homeworld 3 was first announced all the way back in 2019 for PC. The game was initially scheduled to release in Q4 2022 but then was delayed into 2023 in order to protect...

Bungie has shared a new video documentary about Marathon, its newly announced sci-fi PvP extraction shooter.
Announced at yesterday's PlayStation Showcase, the new Marathon is the first entry in the franchise since 1996. The game is PvP-focused and won't have a single-player campaign, but it will honor the mythology and story of the original Marathon games.
We've already learned even more details about the upcoming shooter thanks to a six-and-a-half minute video Bungie posted after fans quickly solved one of the developer's famous ARG (alternate reality game) puzzles.
We'll get to the scavenger hunt Bungie fans went on yesterday to uncover the ViDoc, but first, let's get to the content of the video itself.
