FC 24 has a new first-person referee perspective you may see in cutscenes for bookings and free kicks, but where might this go in future games? Inside the virtual heads of the footballers themselves, EA Sports has suggested. As you’ll know if you’ve read IGN’s EA Sports FC 24 hands-on, or checked out our 13 Things to Know feature, FC 24’s new first-person perspective lets you see the dishing out of cards from inside the referee’s head. You might even see the referee paint the pitch for free kick ball and wall placement, as they often do in real life. In an interview with IGN, senior game design director and lifeline Man City fan Matt Prior said EA Sports’ meetings with football broadcasters had led to the developer employing an...
Developer Infinity Ward changed first-person shooters forever when it launched Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2007. Set on the frontlines of a politically murky war, its adrenaline-fueled action set pieces redefined campaign design for an entire generation. But while levels like Crew Expendable and Charlie Don’t Surf channelled the trademark intensity of Call of Duty’s World War 2 days, one mission set the series’ rulebook ablaze and threw it out of the window. It was called All Ghillied Up. Unfolding amongst the ghostly remains of post-Chernobyl Pripyat, All Ghillied Up is a sniper mission that embraces patience and precision. Its Metal Gear Solid-inspired stealth sensibilities mark a significant shift in gears not just for Modern...

CD Projekt has announced plans to lay off nearly 10% of its workforce. The Witcher and Cyberpunk developer called the round of layoffs, which impact around 100 staff, an “alignment of the scale and size of the team with the requirements of ongoing projects and the CD Projekt Group strategy”. The layoffs affect those in development, publishing, and back-office teams, and are expected to conclude in the first quarter of 2024. “The decision is related to the continuing transformation as part of which the CD Projekt Red studio has managed to - among others - incorporate agile methodologies, while reshaping development processes and optimizing working arrangements,” the company said in a statement. “This change in approach, along with...
Some game franchises are so good, you bag 'em all in one hit. Especially if they're going for at or near Happy Meal prices. Case in points: the Phoenix Wright, Borderlands, and BioShock trilogies on Switch. I'm also about cheap prices for the Batman Arkham, Mass Effect, and Tomb Raider survivor trilogies as well. They may not mean cutting edge visuals, but they're all approaching triple digit hours of otherwise timeless gaming. Sam Lake, the writer and director best-known for his work on Alan Wake and Control, has a unique connection to Max Payne. In the original game, Lake's face was used to bring the NYPD police detective to life. Lake even went so far as to dress up for the role in the original game's cutscene. So it's perhaps no surprise then that Lake's attention was grabbed by a new Max Payne 3 mod that faithfully restores his mug on the eponymous detected, comple with Lake's "legendary facial expression." "Wow, this is very impressive work," Lake wrote to modder Alexey Savvon. The mod, which released late last week, fully-integrates Lake's face into Max Payne 3. Savvon writes that "all of the textures of the head have been adapted and every wound...

Editor's Note: This interview has been edited to include all of the answers from both of our live show and our subsequent Q&A with the developers, with some answers edited for clarity. Star Wars Outlaws is nearly here, and fans still have plenty of quetsions about Ubisoft Massive's upcoming open world game. To answer those questions, we chatted with some of the team behind Star Wars: Outlaws, including narrative director Navid Khavari, creative director Julian Gerighty, and Lucasfilm senior creative executive Matt Martin. During our interviews, we covered a ton of ground Star Wars Outlaws, which stars a scoundrel named Kay Vess in the time between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. From making a game that feels both like...

Ubisoft has a penchant for making long games. A completionist run in Assassin's Creed Valhalla run can take up to 143 hours according to HowLongtoBeat, and some fans are worried that Star Wars Outlaws may be more of the same. The concerns stem from a recent interview confirming that a Star Wars Outlaws planet will comprise "two to three zones" from Assassin's Creed Valhalla. One of the main criticisms of Valhalla was that it felt bloated with content that many players felt underwhelming, which was exemplified by its huge number of map icons — an Ubisoft staple. Speaking with IGN during San Diego Comic-Con, creative director Julian Gerighty and narrative director Navid Khavari addressed the question of what they consider to be "too...
It may not come as a surprise to those who know me, but I love me a good anime aesthetic, and Blue Protocol, the upcoming MMO from Bandai-Namco and Amazon Studios, is anime through and through. But more than just the art style, I like games that lean into their JRPG bonafides and push them to the forefront. Which is why I found myself enjoying Blue Protocol so much during my brief time with it back during Summer of Gaming Play Days last month. The hyper-anime styled MMORPG from Bandai Namco leans way into its anime aesthetic to the point it promises you a chance to "become the hero of your very own anime adventure" on the game's official Steam page. The question is, will Blue Protocol actually allow me, a middle-aged dude who used to...
I’ve greatly enjoyed the fighting game renaissance over the last few years. Between the success of Guilty Gear Strive and Street Fighter 6, and the general improvements to netcode across the board, the genre seems to be at its strongest since the arcade days. And after my time with the first weekend of Tekken 8’s Closed Network Test, it seems primed to bring the Heat to a new generation, despite a few hiccups that can hopefully be attributed to normal pre-release obstacles. In our earlier preview, IGN’s Mitchell Saltzman covered the new mechanics introduced with the Heat system, noting that it doubled down on the uniqueness of each character. I’m happy to report that this holds true with the characters that have been added since the...
Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon is a game that marks several returns for From Software. It’s a return to the series that they built much of the foundation of their legacy off of; a return to a series that they’ve not touched since 2013's Armored Core: Verdict Day; and a return to a genre that isn’t anything remotely close to a Soulslike. I got to play through the entirety of the first chapter of AC6, and if initial impressions are anything to go off, it’s a return that’s going to be triumphant. My experience with soulslikes is vast, but my time with the Armored Core series is admittedly limited. I’ve played the first couple of missions of For Answer, but very little beyond that. Still, given that lack of experience, one of the things...
Ubisoft has reportedly canceled its plans for a sequel to Immortals Fenyx Rising. This decision was made earlier this month by Ubisoft’s leadership due to difficulties establishing it as an IP. According to VGC, the sequel was reportedly in development at Ubisoft Quebec, the same studio in charge of the first game. While Immortals Fenyx Rising received positive reviews, it reportedly only sold a moderate amount of copies. Many of the units sold apparently came from heavy discounting during sales. Additionally, its European sales were reportedly 70% lower than Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s during a similar period. Ubisoft has recently pivoted to focus on its most prominent franchises such as Assassin’s Creed, so it might be unsurprising...
Bethesda Game Studios released three new animated stories for Starfield, focusing on the three major cities in the Settled Systems. The first short film, "Supra Er Ultra," is set on New Atlantis, which Bethesda previously confirmed is the biggest city the studio has ever made. The video focuses on a courier pilot, Kent, who "aspires to live in the most desirable part of the settled systems". The second animated short, "Where Hope is Built," is set in Akila City and tells the story of an orphan girl searching for repair parts to fix a broken ship and live out her dream of exploring the stars. The third film, "The Hand That Feeds," is set in Neon and focuses on two street rats who steal from wealthy tourists and catch the attention...
Sea of Stars launches day-and-date as a PlayStation Plus Game Catalog title August 29, developer Sabotage Studio has revealed. The upcoming turn-based role-playing game inspired by the classics was already announced as coming to Xbox as a day-and-date Game Pass title, as well as PC, and Nintendo Switch. Sea of Stars tells the story of two Children of the Solstice who combine the powers of the sun and moon to perform Eclipse Magic, the only force capable of fending off the monstrous creations of the evil alchemist known as The Fleshmancer. Its release into the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog means Sea of Stars will be available for all Extra and Premium members on launch day. “It’s incredible for us to imagine how many more players...
Final Fantasy 16 producer and 14 director Naoki Yoshida is officially tired of online trolls complaining about his games. As reported by Eurogamer, comments made by Yoshida during a Japanese documentary were translated by streamer and Twitter user Audrey of Aitai Kimochi (below). "There's a lot of people who just yell at you, people I've never seen, met, or talked to before. It's weird," Yoshida said of reading negative comments online. The documentary highlighted a handful of these comments, though most likely picked some of the tamer ones that were appropriate for TV. Reddit user elevenmile translated them: "Eikonic battles are so plain looking," read one. "Still [the only Final Fantasy] that I'm not going to buy day one," said...
An ambitious The Simpsons: Hit and Run fan remake is now complete, but its creator says it will never be released. Creator Reuben "Reubs" Ward remade Radical Entertainment’s much-loved 2003 action-adventure from scratch, figuring out how the original Grand Theft Auto 3-inspired game was coded and remaking every little detail and feature in Unreal Engine 5. In a new video published to YouTube, Reubs declared the project complete. This latest version began life a year ago after Reubs pulled an earlier version offline to avoid potential legal issues with Disney. That earlier version drew praise from Hit & Run lead designer Joe McGinn, who said at the time: "Amazing what you accomplished! Really gives a taste of what a full modern...
Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian employed specially trained intimacy co-ordinators to make sure actors felt comfortable during romantic scenes. In an interview with the BBC, actors Jennifer English and Devora Wilde, who play half-elf cleric Shadowheart and githyanki warrior Lae'zel respectively, praised Larian for employing the intimacy co-ordinators. "I never felt 'yuck' in a recording session at all,” said English. “And I've got quite a low 'yuck' threshold.” While intimacy co-ordinators are now commonly used in film and TV productions, Larian said it reckons it’s one of the first studios to use them during the development of a traditional video game. While 2022’s Immortality used an intimacy coordinator, that game is more an...
Diablo 4 players have heavily criticised the Season 1 battle pass, accusing developer Blizzard of not including enough virtual currency. The $10 battle pass, which launched last week, dishes out 666 Platinum in total upon completion, a figure in-keeping with Diablo’s hellish setting and a nice marketing gimmick, but not enough to afford a single item from the in-game store, where the cheapest cosmetic costs 800 Platinum. Unlike some other live service games, the Diablo 4 battle pass doesn’t even include enough virtual currency to afford the next battle pass, expected to cost 1,000 Platinum. Games like Call of Duty include a battle pass that essentially pays for itself in virtual currency. Those battle passes dish out enough COD...
Square Enix has finally explained the logic behind what many fans consider to be a plot hole in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, justifying it through Aerith having vague memories of future events. Final Fantasy 7 Remake's protagonist Cloud likes to keep to himself, so when he meets Aerith and she already knows he's an ex-SOLDIER (a specific military group) and now a mercenary, there's no obvious way for her to know that. It's been a hotly-contested moment for years, with players' strongest theory being that a friend of Aerith called Zack was also a SOLDIER, so she'd recognise the look, but many others still didn't buy it. Square Enix has finally weighed in through a tweet translated by Siliconera, and spoilers for both versions of Final...
Remnant 2 has shot to the top of Steam’s best-sellers list ahead of its launch later today, July 25. Gunfire Games’ well-received looter-shooter soulslike currently tops Steam’s best-sellers list, which is ordered by revenue. Remnant 2 is currently beating big-hitting rivals such as Valve’s own Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 (which enjoyed a Steam chart surge of its own after a bear sex reveal), and Bethesda’s Starfield. While the first Remnant did well enough to justify a sequel, it’s clear Remnant 2 has attracted a much larger audience across PC and console. IGN’s Remnant 2 review returned a 9/10: “Where Remnant: From The Ashes was a strong first draft, Remnant 2 is a revolutionary sequel and a sterling...
If you're like me, getting up to swap a disc is far too big a pain. That's precious energy, which could be expended on actually playing a game or reaching for another Tiny Teddy or Iced VoVo. Elon Musk's affinity for the letter 'X' is shared by least one Kingdom Hearts character: Master Xehanort, the overarching villain of Square Enix's popular trilogy and the leader of the Real Organization XIII. The connection has led to Kingdom Hearts fans changing their profile pics en masse to those of the hooded Nobodies of Organization XIII. It's just one in the massive wave of memes as fandoms across the board poke fun at Musk's strange decision to do away with one of the world's iconic brands. It seemingly began with a user named Letryx who urged Kingdom Hearts fans to change their bio pic, writing, "KH fans, it's time to rise up." The trend quickly caught on among Kingdom Hearts fans on the platform, many of whom posted scenes...
Over the weekend, fans of Ubisoft games underwent a minor panic as a rumor spread that Ubisoft might be spontaneously deleting inactive Ubisoft accounts, permanently destroying digital game libraries if users aren't logging on often enough. However, Ubisoft has now clarified that this is false, and users' digital game libraries are safe, even if their accounts are inactive. The rumors were kicked off when a tweet circulated showing an email entitled "Ubisoft Account Closure Due to Inactivity." The email instructed that the recipient's Ubisoft account had been temporarily suspended, and would be closed permanently in 30 days unless the closure was canceled by the account owner. The email was then confirmed to be legitimate by the...
One dedicated Starfield fan thinks they've uncovered the upcoming Bethesda RPG's entire skill tree after spending 200 hours piecing together different gameplay clips, trailers, and other game snippets. As reported by GamesRadar, asd8dhd on Reddit has listed each individual skill that's identifiable by different elements of gameplay or developer commentary and put them together to create what they believe is the complete skill tree. This includes things like the Equilibrium skill, which can be upgraded twice, pulled from zero gravity gameplay and a developer talking about how firing weapons in zero gravity will have different effects. Then there's the martial arts skill, evidenced by gameplay showing the player locked in hand-to-hand...
Amnesia: The Bunker developer Frictional Games is looking to cut back on horror games "to give greater focus on other emotional qualities". Speaking to 80.lv, Frictional creative director Thomas Grip echoed the sentiments of fellow horror studio Bloober Team, which also recently said it was stepping away from the games it was traditionally known for. "While all of our games have been horror in some way, what we really try to do is to get a kind of playable immersion," Grip said. "We want to give the player some sort of immersive fantasy, be that being a [World War 1] soldier trapped in a bunker or a robot stuck at the bottom of the ocean. "Horror games naturally are where emotions are front and centre. Games really excel at this...
Tencent announced it's buying Polish developer Techland, the studio behind the original Dead Island and the Dying Light series. In a blog post, Techland CEO Pawel Marchewka announced that Tencent "is currently in the process" of becoming the studio's majority shareholder. "Teaming up with Tencent will allow us to move full speed ahead with the execution of the vision for our games," Marchewka explained. "We have chosen an ally who has already partnered with some of the world's finest video game companies and helped them reach new heights while respecting their ways of doing things." Marchewka insisted that even though Tencent will own the studio, Techland will retain full ownership of its intellectual properties, maintain creative...
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0 are meant to be realistic, right? On the face of it, that’s what the hugely popular Activision shooters are, with campaign missions that ape historical military operations and an army-obsessed aesthetic that recreates real-world weapons and vehicles in video game form. Enter Call of Duty’s latest cosmetic concoction, dubbed “laser cats!”. Here’s redditor exileonwoodct with a clip of it in action. The laser cat is actually a combination of two $20 cosmetics: the Sgt. Pspsps Operator skin included in the Whisker Tango bundle, which costs 2,400 COD Points or around $20, and the Homelander skin from The Boys Homelander Operator bundle, which also costs 2,400 COD Points. The Homelander...
