A new report has claimed Marathon’s budget is over $200 million, and while player numbers have fallen significantly since launch, Bungie’s extraction shooter is allegedly not facing an imminent shutdown. Forbes reported that the Marathon budget is likely more than $250 million. It’s worth noting that this spend allegedly does not include ongoing costs for the live service game, nor the development of post-launch content. Last month, one analyst said “Marathon hasn't exactly made the splash Sony and Bungie wanted,” estimating sales at around 1.2 million copies. That, Alinea Analytics said, amounted to gross revenues of around $55 million across PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. On Steam, Marathon hit a peak...
World of Warcraft: Midnight is a very purple expansion, thanks to its primary antagonist being the Void. There's a big purple beam shooting from the sky in the distance all the time. Most of the enemies are purple. Two out of three of the major raids and several dungeons and delves are purple. And the main villain, Xal'atath, is very purple. Given all the purple going around, it's not too much of a shock that Blizzard finally brought back one of its simultaneously best-loved and most-hated purple characters for a plot twist at the end of the most recent raid. What is shocking, though, is the news that character delivered: a hint that we might be careening toward a revisit to one of World of Warcraft's most maligned (and only...
I first meet Fiona when she’s taking a depression bath. She’s thinking about floating away to a remote island she’s seen in an ad when her doorbell rings. It’s the instant noodles I ordered (Neverway asked me to pick a food), and when you’re ordering instant noodles, you know you’re down horrendous. A quick check of her computer tells the story: my girl has stopped coming to work, and she’s been fired. She has five days to pick up her things from the office before they’re recycled. Fiona hasn’t replied. Another email is from foxyrogue1 letting Fiona know that foxyrogue1 has her hoodie. When she doesn’t reply, foxyrogue reaches out to see if Fiona’s okay. She doesn’t reply to that one either. But her email reveals other secrets, too...
When I hear "like Twin Peaks" anytime someone refers to their game, I sit down with certain expectations. For all its darkness, Twin Peaks is whimsical, even in its horror. Crop, the debut game coming from Carbonara Games in collaboration with 11Bit Studios, was said to have "Twin Peaks-style horror" by the pair from 11Bit presenting the game to me, yet Crop seemingly lacks any goofiness or some sort of grounded relief I'd expect in a Twin Peaks-inspired piece of media — and it may be better for it. In my hands-off demo, I saw how Crop clearly defines itself from its many idyllic farming sim counterparts by putting the hard, tedious work of farming front and center with a moody palette to match. And maybe some blood sacrifices too...
A brand new free-to-play Borderlands game has suddenly launched today on iPhone, and you'd be forgiven for not knowing it was due for release. The game was quietly published today by mobile giant Zynga, though is developed by British studio NaturalMotion, which previously worked on Star Wars: Hunters. Right now, Borderlands Mobile currently exists on the App Store as part of a "limited-time test", according to a statement about the game sent to Gematsu — something that also reveals Borderlands creator Gearbox was involved simply in an advisory role. Described as a free-to-play "epic looter shooter", Borderlands Mobile is currently only available on iPhone (there's no Android version, yet) and only in the US. We've tried accessing...

If you’ve checked social media today, you may have stumbled across a see-through ballpoint pen with real parasites swimming around inside it (and maybe dismissed it as AI slop). Prompting grossed-out reactions and comparisons to Resident Evil, the pen is actually a real souvenir from Japan’s Kochi Prefecture. Earlier this year, Japan’s Asahi News fished out the origins of this strange writing implement. Even though the pen looks like something you’d find on Wesker’s desk, it’s a real product purchasable from a fishmongers’ shop in Susaki city, Kochi Prefecture. The transparent section of the pen contains living Anisakis, a type of fish-dwelling parasite, suspended in a clear liquid. The parasite can cause food poisoning if you eat raw...
Cards on the table: Samson is glitchy. It’s janky. You’re as likely to fail a mission from getting stuck on some decorative bin bags as you are from being beaten to death. These are all issues that can be fixed, but only with the kind of rigorous update schedule that beleaguered developer Liquid Swords is unlikely to be able to pull off. So, in its current state at least, it’s difficult to recommend. I’m gonna do that annoying thing now that people in my line of work love doing: I’m going to contradict everything I just said with a big but. As in, “however”, not my ass. But (there it is), Samson offers such an interesting and unique take on the open world crime caper that it does warrant some consideration as a low-cost stopover on...
Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition is now available to preorder for Switch 2. The upgraded release was announced during a Nintendo Direct last year, and includes new armor sets and starting classes in addition to the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. The new preorder listing confirms the Tarnished Edition will be priced at $79.99. However, it also confirms the new edition only comes with a game-key card. Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition Preorders Now Live for Switch 2 What’s Included in the Tarnished Edition: Full Base Game Full Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion 2 New Starting Classes: Heavy Knight and Knight of Ides 4 New Armor Sets 3 Customization Options for Torrent I commend the size of the rock anyone who hasn’t heard of...
Here’s a huge discount for any new or lapsed Destiny 2 players looking to jump (back) in. Humble has just put up the new Destiny 2 Expansions Bundle 2026 that gets you heaps of looter shooter content for a fraction of the normal cost. Put together, these items normally cost $354, but the bundle sells for just $28. And if you don’t need all that content, you can get smaller bundles starting at $4. So what all is included, exactly? Here’s the breakdown, and note that higher-priced tiers include everything in all the lower-priced tiers. Destiny 2 Expansions Bundle 2026 Contents Pay at Least $4 Beyond Light Shadowkeep Pack Forsaken Pack Pay at Least $10 The Edge of Fate The Final Shape Lightfall The Witch Queen Bungie 30th...
The first thing I did in Halloween was pick up a pickaxe. I thought it might give me a fighting chance against him. I was right. A couple minutes later, I ran into Michael Myers, the Shape himself. The fight that followed that quick: his knife against my pickaxe. I knocked him down, but that didn’t mean I won. He’s the boogeyman. Give him a minute, and he sits right back up. But it was enough time for me to get a headstart. If I wanted to survive a night in Haddonfield, that would have to be enough. If there was ever a film that was primed to be an asymmetrical horror game, John Carpenter’s Halloween is it. But after spending some time with it at PAX East, what makes Illfonic’s latest stand out isn’t the asymmetrical horror structure...
Ever since PUBG pioneered the genre and the subsequent rise of Fortnite, battle royale has been the dominant shooter mode of choice online. But now, the emergence of the extraction shooter as a mainstream concern, namely the popularity of Arc Raiders, threatens to take that crown. For nearly a decade, players have been going head-to-head to be the last standing, and while other genre contenders, such as the hero shooter, have had their successes, battle royale remains the most popular, whether that be Battlegrounds, Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, or Apex Legends. But that won’t last forever, and is something Taeseok Jang, head of PUBG Studios, is very aware of. Hence, the developer is already branching out the PlayerUnknown...
The use of generative AI in games is one of the hottest topics in the industry right now, and a couple of weeks ago, the biggest game of the year so far, Crimson Desert, found itself at the centre of it after some in-game paintings were discovered to have been created using the technology. It led to a swift apology from developer Pearl Abyss, who claimed that AI-generated assets “were unintentionally included in the final release,” and admitted it should have disclosed the use of AI to players. “We sincerely apologize for these oversights,” the Korean company added. It’s Steam's policy for games to clearly declare on their store pages if generative AI has been used to make them, but it is by no means against the rules to use these...
Five independent game studios – including the developers of the upcoming Replaced and the team behind the upcoming Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era – have joined forces in a sort-of co-op in order to support each other with development and marketing, with an aim to eventually create their own co-owned publishing label. Sad Cat Studios (Replaced), Unfrozen (Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era), Weappy (This Is the Police), VEA Games (Nikoderiko: The Magical World), and Game Garden (Farmdale) aren't merging; they will each remain independent studios. However, the goal of Nova Assembly is intended to be a backstop against layoffs and increasing development and publishing uncertainty in the gaming space by sharing resources in mutually...
A year on from the release of The First Berserker: Khazan, the action RPG set in the Dungeon Fighter Online universe, Nexon has reportedly reassigned a large portion of its production staff due to alleged poor performance. That's according to Yonhap News, which reports that a Nexon official has revealed that despite hitting a Steam concurrent peak of just shy of 33,000 players at launch, sales "declined and fell short of market expectations." This, coupled with licensing delays in getting the game out in China, has resulted in around 100 members of Khazan's team being told yesterday, April 8, that they have now been moved to the "R Team," a reassignment division at Neople (thanks, GamesRadar). It's true that player numbers have fallen...
The Nintendo Switch Online classic games catalog has today been updated with three more titles, including arcade favorite Pac-Man. Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can access the three new (or rather, old) titles via the Nintendo Classics NES app now, and play Pac-Man, Mendel Palace and The Tower of Druaga. Pac-Man needs little introduction, as this is the classic experience from the yellow hero's arcade days. Chomp pellets, avoid ghosts, and gobble up Power Pellets to turn the tide. Should you risk getting all the fruit too? Yes, yes, you should. Mendel Palace, meanwhile, is a puzzle game originally released in 1989 by a small team known as Game Freak — yes, the same developer that would later go on to make Pokémon, a franchise...
The creative director of Samson has promised the team is "committed to the future" of the game despite launching to a 'Mixed' reception on Steam amid complaints about performance, gameplay, optimization, and more. Samson released just yesterday, April 8, and is currently the third-lowest-rated game of 2026 according to Metacritic, with a score a full 15 points lower than the beleaguered Highguard, which was taken offline just six weeks after launch. Steam reviews complain of broken car chases, input delays, issues with animation, and poor optimization, with one writing: "The combat is 9/10, but the optimization is a 4/10. Samson has amazing bones and the dynamic mechanics are a blast, but it's currently crying out for patches. Once...

In a new interview, development veteran and Sledgehammer Games co-founder Michael Condrey (Dead Space, Call of Duty: WWII) has detailed how a decision on a development partner to handle the PC port of 2002’s 007 Nightfire could have had huge ramifications on the actual existence of the Call of Duty franchise as we know it today. Condrey discussed the matter with writer Cade Onder during the production of a documentary the latter has produced on the making of 2011’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Back around the early 2000s, Condrey spent eight years working at EA on a number of James Bond games – as a producer on The World Is Not Enough, Agent Under Fire, and Nightfire, and later in a development director role on Everything or Nothing...

Heads-up, PC players: Steam codes for ARC Raiders are on sale at Fanatical for $26.79. That’s a 33% discount from the typical $39.99 price. The beloved extraction shooter was a breakout hit late last year, earning a 9/10 in our review. The sale ends tomorrow (assuming codes don’t sell out), so grab it sooner than later if you want it. ARC Raiders on Sale Until ARC Raiders came out, I’d been intrigued by the idea of the extraction shooter, but was hesitant to try one out. They seemed more cutthroat and high-stakes than I was looking for in a game. I didn’t want to lose my entire loadout if I died. I didn’t want to get blasted to bits by other players, as I’d heard happened all the time in these dog-eat-dog worlds. But when our review...
One Crimson Desert fan has secured its Platinum trophy after spending 305 hours since the game came out — leaving fans of the game shocked and concerned. A Platinum trophy is awarded to PlayStation users who obtain all other trophies in a game. TioZer0, who has a number of Platinum trophies under their belt already, has been explaining how and why they did this after posting a screenshot of their achievement on reddit, which subsequently went viral. As TioZer0’s achievement made its way to social media, Pearl Abyss PR and marketing chief Will Powers expressed his disbelief, pointing out that Crimson Desert had only been out for 428 hours when TioZer0 nabbed the Platinum. As one redditor worked out, Crimson Desert came out 18 days...

We got the opportunity to take a first, very early look at Koshmar: The Last Reverie, a dark fantasy action game by Purple Ray Studios. Formerly known only as Project: Nightmare, its haunted world and fast-paced action combat suggests a sort of straightforward action-adventure, but some time with the studio revealed that they are aiming high to exceed expectations. “We wanted to do something completely different,” said Kornelia Blazynska, Co-founder of Purple Ray and Creative Director of Koshmar, in reference to the complete tonal shift from their last game, the upbeat 3D platformer Boti: Byteland Overclocked. Trading in sunlight and cheery gothic steampunk architecture with that sort of hand-painted visual feel, it wears its Lies of P...
IO Interactive has delayed the Nintendo Switch 2 version of its upcoming James Bond game, 007 First Light. In a statement released via social media today, IO reconfirmed the game's previously-delayed launch date for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S (May 27, a date once held by GTA 6) before going on to note that the Switch 2 version was now set for "later this summer." The original plan had been for 007 First Light to arrive on all platforms at the same time (and originally on March 27). IO delayed the game back in December for all platforms, though had maintained its plan was to still launch the game simultaneously across all consoles. Exactly why the Switch 2 version will now arrive months later than on other formats is...
No Man’s Sky’s latest update, Xeno Arena, is doing its best Pokémon impression by letting you raise, train and battle the alien creatures found across the universe. “Most of the planets you’ve visited in your travels have always been teeming with wildlife,” developer Hello Games said, “and now, for the first time, those creatures are not just your companions, but your squad and maybe your champions!” The update adds turn-based creature battles to the veteran space game for the first time. The idea is you explore the universe, assemble a team of creature companions, perfect their genetic makeup, and test their mettle at simulated combat arenas. There are hundreds of unique battle abilities, and you get to challenge new alien...
