Dark Horse's twin-volume Dragon Age: The World of Thedas series is pretty much the perfect resource for anyone who likes to geek out about the lore of this fantasy gaming universe. And while the original hardcover editions are becoming harder to find in print these days, that won't be an issue much longer. IGN can exclusively reveal the Dragon Age: The World of Thedas Boxset, which features new softcover versions of both books packaged inside an exclusive slipcase adorned in Dragon Age artwork. The two volumes in this set are act as both art books and lore guides to the Dragon Age franchise, covering the key conflicts in this universe and the important locales. The books cover everything in the series up through 2014's Dragon Age...
Rocksteady co-founders Sefton Hill and Jamie Walker - who helped create the Batman Arkham series, as well as the upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League - are leaving the studio for a "new adventure in gaming". In an open letter, Warner Bros. Interactive president David Haddad said, "With Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League nearly finished, they have both decided to leave Rocksteady at the end of 2022 and will begin a new adventure in gaming." It's not yet clear what that new adventure will be. It's not just a major change in leadership for the business, but on the creative side, with Hill having directed all of Rocksteady's Arkham games, as well as Suicide Squad. Hill and Walker will be replaced by Nathan Burlow as Studio...
While Callisto Protocol is technically an entirely new IP and brand new story, the skeletal base of Dead Space is apparent – much in the same way it’s obvious to everyone in House of the Dragon that Rhaenyra’s kids are not fathered by Ser Laenor Velaryon. So, can the spiritual successor live up to the original? I got some hands-on time with Callisto Protocol on the PS5 to find out. In my preview time, I played the level called Habitat. The first things I immediately noticed were the creepy ambient noises. Random squelching, clattering, and faint echoes all around made me feel constantly on edge. Traversing through the dark hallways and entering rooms always required me to take a breath and push through while always expecting something...
Recently I had some hands-on time with The Callisto Protocol, the upcoming sci-fi horror game from Dead Space creator Glen Schofield. Aside from the obvious Dead Space similarities and impressive presentation, the thing that struck me the most was the surprising level of difficulty. In almost every situation death was only one wrong move away. But an unexpected benefit of my regular missteps was being able to witness the huge variety of gory death animations that developer Striking Distance Studios has created. From being violently sucked into industrial fans to having half my head bitten off in a single chomp, I was taken aback – but also extremely entertained – by the incredible levels of brutality. Much like recent Mortal Kombat...
Nexon’s Warhaven follows in the footsteps of games like For Honor before it in trying to carve a space out for the third person melee action gamer amidst a sea of first-person large-scale multiplayer warfare offerings. Based on the current Open Beta Playtest running until early November, there’s still a lot of work to be done to make the case. I had some fun in short bursts, but as a solo player, every clutch capture or dominant killing spree was bookended by frustrating moments of chaos where there was no great way to steer your team to objectives or to avoid getting overwhelmed by enemies, no great way to hold your own one on one. Dropping into any of the four currently available maps first requires you to pick a class. There are...
CD Projekt Red has announced that it will remake The Witcher in Unreal Engine 5, alongside developer Fool's Theory. This is one of the five new games the company announced earlier this month, and previously went by the codename Canis Majoris. This will be a true remake, with the the company saying, it will be "rebuilt from the ground up" in Unreal Engine 5, and is early stages of development. As part of its announcement, the company cautioned: "We want to do this right, so please be patient — it's gonna be a while until we can share more details." “The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD Projekt Red. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game...
Six years after Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness disappointed fans of the sci-fi JRPG series like me, Star Ocean: The Divine Force feels like a long-awaited return to form in many ways. Its revamped combat is a lot of fun, breathing fresh life into a system that certainly benefits by evolving with the times a bit. Other areas do stagnate, unfortunately, like its lackluster visuals and horrid user interface. But a respectable story full of likable characters makes this a sequel I’m still very happy to have sailed through the stars of. The Divine Force tells a standalone story that isn’t directly connected to any other Star Ocean games, but it does contain quite a few references to past events and characters that were rewarding...
Team Ninja has announced that upcoming Soulslike, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty will be released on March 3, 2023. The developer also revealed it will receive three DLC packs that add new demons, scenarios, stages, weapon times, and more to the action game set in a darker version of China's Three Kingdom period. These will be available in a Season Pass that comes in the Digital Deluxe version of Wo Long, which also includes a digital artbook and digital mini soundtrack. A limited edition physical version will also be available at launch, containing the and a steelbook cover, though no Season Pass. Lots of smaller DLC packs are also available for preordering or purchasing the game in different ways. Buying either version by March 16...
Microsoft reportedly passed on the chance to make Genshin Impact an Xbox console exclusive, something the company regretted after the game blew up. As reported by Reuters, sources familiar with the matter said Microsoft met with Chinese developer miHoYo early in Genshin Impact's development but failed to reach an exclusivity deal. Sony would later secure the deal for itself, making the game a PlayStation console exclusive. "Picking up Genshin Impact made Sony a lot of money," one source said, adding that missing the opportunity is the driving force behind Microsoft's current pursuit of independent Chinese developers. The company is reportedly building a team specifically to scout out Chinese games and developers with high potential...
Microsoft plans to add features from Android 13 to Windows 11 as part of its future roadmap — part of a move to add more more elements from Android overall to the operating system. The features were listed as part of an update intended for Windows 11 developers, in which Microsoft also promised improvements to file transfer, shortcuts, picture-in-picture, and local network access by default. It follows a recent update that included enhancements for File Explore among other improvements. Android 13 is the latest operating system publicly available to Pixel phone users. According to PC Magazine, it's an iterative update that builds upon Android 12's foundation, featuring "much more elaborate Material You design, convenient multitasking...
Ever since I was a child rushing over to the VHS rewinder to queue up another showing of Ghostbusters, I’ve dreamt of a multiplayer game in its unflinchingly silly universe. Whether it’s the over-the-top spectral miscreants or the ridiculous ghost-sucking vacuums carried by phantom-catching vigilantes in janitor’s outfits, it’s hard to imagine a world more ripe for an asymmetrical multiplayer game where a team of ghost cops goes head-to-head against a vengeful wraith. Unfortunately, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed’s attempt to fill this void is only a qualified success, as it often absolutely nails the ghost-hunting fantasy, but gets stuck in the thick slime of balancing issues, questionable level design, a story that only barely...
Over two decades after its initial release, Age of Empires 2 is finally headed to consoles, alongside the significantly more recent Age of Empires 4. Announced today during the Age of Empires 25th Anniversary Broadcast, we learned that Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition will launch on Xbox consoles on January 31, 2023, while Age of Empires 4 will follow later in the same year. We're also getting Age of Mythology Retold, a definitive edition of the original 2002 Age of Mythology. The game is currently in development with "updated graphics, features and more" but we have no further details on when we might finally see it. Other announcements during the presentation included a teaser for Age of Empires on mobile, and the launch of...

Total War developer Creative Assembly has announced it is opening an investigation into "deeply concerning and serious allegations regarding a former CA employee." In a statement posted to its Twitter account today, Creative Assembly said it was investigating the situation through a third party. In a follow-up tweet, it encouraged other former employees to share experiences via a dedicated whistleblowing email address. Though Creative Assembly itself did not specify the nature of the allegations, a number of tweets over the last week have spoken up about bullying, harassment, and abuse at the studio either experienced firsthand or heard about, with at least one specific culprit being named by multiple people. Creative Assembly's...
High on Life, the upcoming comedy first-person shooter from Justin Roiland’s Squanch Games, doesn’t take place within the Rick and Morty universe. But it sure seems like it could. It’s got zany and foul-mouthed aliens, fantastical settings, and a sense of humor that’s 100% Roiland – from the interdimensional cable-style animated shorts that act as TV commercials in the High on Live universe to your default talking gun, a pistol named Kenny that sounds exactly like Morty. I played a few hours of it, with the developers being careful not to spoil the opening minutes but otherwise letting me have free reign to choose any bounty I wanted in any order I wanted during my hands-on time. In short, there’s more to High on Life than I expected...
System Shock is a highly influential game. So much so that, thanks to a successful Kickstarter, the original is receiving a modern remake from the ground up. While I never played the 1994 original myself, the time I did have with the upcoming remake gave me a sense of what it was like thanks to its haunting sci-fi atmosphere and breathtaking environments. Even if the moment to moment gameplay isn’t as engaging as I would like it to be. For those like me who are new to System Shock, the first-person sci-fi action-adventure sees you exploring a space base known as Citadel Station. You play as a hacker in the near future who makes a deal with a company called Tri0ptimum to receive a neural implant after releasing the ethical restraints...
Black Adam is joining the likes of Batman, Rick and Morty, and Harley Quinn in Multiversus later this week, alongside a new arcade mode. Multiversus announced the new additions on Twitter (below) with a brief teaser trailer, though didn't give much away as to how Black Adam will play or what the arcade mode will entail. Despite releasing alongside the DC Extended Universe film, however, Black Adam doesn't appear to be based on Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's version of the character. A pixel art version of the character appears in the new teaser trailer, matching a previously shared look at the character that appears to be based on the Black Adam comics. A specific release date wasn't shared either, though both Black Adam and the...
FromSoftware has announced that the PC servers for Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition have been taken offline permanently, though the Remastered version will still be restored. Also confirming that Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin's PC servers are back online after ten months, FromSoftware said in a tweet (below) that the infrastructure of the original Dark Souls is simply too old to be supported at this point. "We have determined that we will not be able to support online services for the PC version of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition that was released in 2012, due to an aging system," it said. "We apologize for the long wait and ask for your understanding in this matter." The Prepare to Die Edition was the original PC...

Players who were around for Diablo III's launch in 2012 will probably remember the auction house: a gameplay mechanic where players could buy and sell their in-game items for real-world money. The feature was controversial right from the start, but it didn't disappear completely until 2014. Now, we know why. During a panel at Portland Retro Gaming Expo (via PC Gamer), Diablo III lead designer Jay Wilson shared why it took so long for Blizzard to remove the unpopular mechanic. "The reason we did not get rid of it right away when we saw it was a problem was legally we didn't think we could because it was advertised on the boxes," Wilson said. "So we actually took a long time to try and work out all the legal issues before we finally...
Paradox Interactive’s grand strategy games are known for their uncompromising scope and depth in recreating entire eras of history, but never before have they attempted something quite so dizzyingly complex as Victoria 3. Modeling every single human alive in the world-changing century from 1836 to 1936, their hopes and desires, their joy and wrath, and how they feel about the price of new deck chairs, the simulated world before you is a marvel to behold. And what's even more incredible is that it's not merely a curiosity or a tech demo. Aside from a moderate helping of launch-day jank, it mostly works, and serves as the basis for a deeply engrossing sociopolitical strategy game. It's only fair to give a warning straight off that...
This is our single-player campaign review for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. For our thoughts on PvP, check out the in-progress multiplayer review, and expect our final verdict soon. In five years time when we discuss Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, there will be no confusion as to which of the two games that share that name people are referring to. Thanks to a lackluster story, fumbled mechanical innovations, and largely underwhelming mission design, this year’s Call of Duty campaign is an unfortunate misfire that fails to live up to standards set by not only its unforgettable 2009 namesake, but also its 2019 predecessor. While it is graphically impressive, the gunplay remains state of the art, and there are some welcome but...
The issues surrounding Disco Elysium developer ZA/UM continue, as one ex-developer has apparently filed a lawsuit against the company. According to a report from Tech News Space, an official website of the Estonian court revealed that the lead game designer of Disco Elysium, Robert Kurvitz, is suing ZA/UM. According to the report, Kurvitz filed a lawsuit on behalf of his own company, Telomer. The court date is currently set for November 28, but we don't know exactly what the hearing will be about. Earlier this month, Disco Elysium editor Martin Luiga said key Disco Elysium developers "involuntarily" left ZA/UM, including Luiga, Kurvitz, writer Helen Hindpere, and lead of art and design Aleksander Rostov. The ex-developer said the...
Bethesda has announced that Fallout 4 is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with an official next-generation update next year. As part of the Fallout 25th Anniversary celebration, Bethesda released a blog post that announced the long-awaited free update that is also coming to PC. Arriving eight years after Fallout 4 was first released, the update includes a performance mode that allows for higher frame rates, a quality mode for 4K graphics, plus bug fixes and more Creation Club content (Bethesda's official mod support). The developer didn't reveal a specific release date or window for Fallout 4's next-gen update, nor did it give a full list of features, but it will also likely include console-specific upgrades such as the...
Back in May when I played Sonic Frontiers for my first preview, I came away with an overall positive first impression, but also a feeling that there was still a good bit of work to be done. The game felt buggy, the performance didn’t feel optimized, and there was a ton of distracting pop-in of objects and obstacles floating around in the sky. Here we are five months later, and I got a chance to go hands-on again with a PC build of Sonic Frontiers, this time for a full six hours to check out the first three islands in their entirety, and while a lot of those same issues that I experienced the first time I played are still present — the pop-in and a handful of minor bugs — it is clear that a lot of work has gone into tightening up Sonic...
For all of the games – including its own sequels – that have come since, the opening moments of 1998’s Metal Gear Solid still loom large. After years of terrible pre-recorded ‘interactive movies’, here, at last, was a game that understood that having live actors on screen wasn’t the key ingredient in giving something a cinematic edge. Metal Gear Solid, if nothing else, understood how to create mood, even if the camera was panning around low-polygon character models. It aimed to feel like a movie, not look like one. It focused on the small flourishes that mattered: moody music, precise camera angles. As players guided Snake around the frigid location, actor and staff credits played. And then, notably, just after the scripting credits...
Steam has once again broken its own concurrent record as this weekend saw over 30 million users online at one time. As revealed by SteamDB, 30,032,005 players were online on Sunday, October 23, and the top five games being played consisted of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, Lost Ark, Apex Legends, and PUBG: Battlegrounds. Not all 30 million players were in a game, as many could have been browsing the store, chatting in communities, and more. Counter-Strike was far and away the winner of the weekend with a peak of around 1.05 million concurrent players. Dota 2's peak was around 750,000, and then there was a decent dropoff as the next highest was PUBG's 442,148 peak. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Steam has seen...
Valorant's Episode 5: Act III Battlepass includes a gun buddy called "Corbin's Light" that honors a fan named Corbin who recently passed away after a battle with cancer. The Valorant team shared the news and Corbin's story in a blog for what's new in Valorant's newest season. The words reveal that the Gun Buddy itself was inspired by design notes from Corbin and his older brother, and it includes the coordinates of a star that was named after Corbin by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In honor of Corbin, Riot Games will additionally be making a donation via its Riot Games Social Impact Fund to the C-Squad Foundation, a charity that was started in Corbin's honor before he passed. If you'd like to add Corbin's Light to your collection...
The launch of Fallout 76 was a disaster. From unforgivable bugs and data breaches, to collector’s edition items that were the very definition of the words ‘false advertising’, the once lauded series went from controversy to controversy after the launch of its first MMO. Fallout 76, according to most, was dead on arrival. But four years later, much to everyone’s surprise, vault dwellers are still emerging. And not only are they still actively and obsessively playing, but they’re doing some extremely weird things, from black markets, Shakespeare troupes, and full-time courier services, all the way to roleplaying cannibals and trap camp serial killers. I wanted to get to the bottom of why Fallout diehards are not only still playing the...
Level Up KL is a game expo held annually in Kuala Lumpur. This year’s first post-pandemic show featured a wealth of great games from across the Southeast Asia region, with developers from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Korea, the Philippines and more. The quality of games coming from this region is growing at an amazing rate, with some not-to-be-missed new titles coming this year and next. Here are a handful of my favourites from the Level Up show floor this year. Kabaret With its dark fantasy take on folklore from across Southeast Asia, Kabaret is a visual novel with a rich scattering of minigames and other confections, all presented with an incredibly striking hand-drawn art style and a vibrant soundtrack. While...
