Developer EA Dice has announced that Battlefield 2042 Season 3: Escalation arrives on November 22, bringing a new map, Battle Pass, Specialist, and more. The new map, Spearhead, puts players in the Swedish wilderness as they fight in and around two high tech weapon manufacturing facilities. Season 3 will also see launch maps Manifest and Breakaway reworked, but not until December and January respectively. A refreshed 100-tier Battle Pass will also arrive with the update that includes new Specialist Rasheed Zain as one of the free unlockables. This Egyptian-born security expert comes armed with an XM370A airburst launcher designed to force enemies out of cover and the fastest health recharge of any Specialist. Speaking of weapons...
A new Legacy of Kain game is looking likely after Embracer Group received 100,000 responses to its recent survey asking fans if they wanted more from the franchise. In its second quarter financial results, Embracer Group said it was overwhelmed with the number of responses to the survey it released in October and responded plainly: "We hear you loudly and clearly". Phil Rogers, CEO of Embracer's 12th operative group that encompasses Legacy of Kain creator Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Interactive, said: "We wanted to gain a community perspective on what players are looking for should we revisit the land of Nosgoth and, of course, our iconic IP Legacy of Kain." He continued: "In the post we've found that surveys typically get between...
Until Dawn and The Quarry developer Supermassive Games is currently developing another Dark Pictures Anthology game set in space. As reported by Eurogamer, a trailer for the new game appeared at the end of The Dark Pictures: The Devil In Me, and YouTube user Slimpy has already uploaded footage from an early copy. The game is called Directive 8020 and will act as the Season 2 premiere of The Dark Pictures Anthology after The Devil In Me wrapped up Season 1. The minute-long trailer shows what appears to be a space station from well into the future, as a narrator comments that it's looking for humanity's new home. "This is Commander Stafford of the forward reconnaissance vessel Cassiopeia," the voice said. "After successfully...
Activision Blizzard has announced that several of its game franchises including Overwatch, Diablo, World of Warcraft, and more will be unplayable in China as of January 23, 2023. The Blizzard side of its business was unable to reach a new deal with Chinese tech company NetEase, who publishes the games in China, meaning its agreement will expire on the aforementioned date. World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Warcraft III: Reforged, Overwatch 2, the StarCraft series, Diablo III, and Heroes of the Storm will all be unplayable. Diablo: Immortal, Blizzard's controversial mobile game, is published under a separate agreement and is therefore unaffected at the moment. Activision Blizzard is already looking into alternative ways to bring its...
Deep Silver has once again delayed Dead Island 2 and the game will now be released on April 28 next year. Announced on the Dead Island Twitter (below), the delay from February 3 at least only marks a 12 week delay compared to the several years it's been since Dead Island 2's initial release window of spring 2015. No specific reason for the delay was given so it appears developer Dambuster Studios simply needed more time, though it said it understands the irony in delaying Dead Island 2 again. "The irony of delaying Dead Island 2 is not lost on us and we are as disappointed as you undoubtedly are," it said in a joint statement with publisher Deep Silver. "The delay is just 12 short weeks and development is on the final straight now...

Feelings of glee and wonder not unlike walking into an arcade full of classic games befell me as I booted up Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration, gawking at its wide and varied wonders. This collection offers a completely new, very fun way to explore several decades of Atari arcade machines, consoles, handhelds, and PCs. With no musty old, red museum ropes to restrain me (only five of the 103 games require unlocking), I found myself not just absorbing, but exploring the past – like that chunky pixel in Adventure for the Atari 2600 gliding through rainbow-colored castles. Experiencing history in Atari 50 is like nothing else I’ve ever seen in any collection before, let alone a documentary, book, or a classroom. It’s all of those things...

A fan-made Fallout 76 live-action concept trailer has left Bethesda impressed. The video’s director, Brian Curtin managed to fit much of the Fallout franchise’s iconography into the two-and-a-half-minute trailer. The official Fallout Twitter account posted Curtin’s video and praised it, saying that it had left the team “speechless.” There are many references to Fallout 76 in the trailer, such as the Power Armor and Pip-Boy items. Throughout the video, many dialogue lines from the game can be heard. Roger Maxon, founder of the Brotherhood of Steel says, “I know most of you love America, but America failed. It’s not because of its citizens, no, its leaders failed us. Their failure almost destroyed all mankind...” Fallout 76’s DJ...
Bethesda has responded to composer Mick Gordon’s detailed statement regarding his experiences working on Doom Eternal. In a statement published online, Bethesda says Gordon’s account of Doom Eternal’s soundtrack development “both mischaracterized and misrepresented the team at id Software” and that Bethesda “Unequivocally support Marty [Stratton], Chad [Mossholder, audio designer] and the team at id Software.” Bethesda adds that it “reject the distortion of the truth and selective presentation of incomplete ‘facts.’” You can read the company’s statement below. In 2020 Doom Eternal executive producer Marty Stratton issued a public statement on the state of the Doom Eternal soundtrack and Gordon’s work with concerns over Gordon’s...
I don’t know if I’ve ever played something as gobsmackingly unhinged as Goat Simulator 3. Developer Coffee Stain North’s doggedly rebellious attitude is apparent in everything from the incoherent “story” to gameplay so over-the-top that half the time it’s hard to tell what’s happening – even the title refuses to play by the rules, skipping Goat Simulator 2 and going straight to three for no particular reason. Throw in four-player co-op that multiplies the madness to even greater extremes as you run rampant through a large open-world map filled with things to lick, headbutt, and blow up, and you’ve got yourself a game so absurd it’s hard to imagine being bored for even a second. This deranged sequel is bigger, packed with silly jokes and...
Streets of Rage is coming to the silver screen. Lionsgate has acquired the motion picture rights for the Sega game, opening the door for a film adaptation of the popular franchise. Derek Kolstad, who has previously written John Wick and all of its sequels, will write and produce the adaptation. Streets of Rage centers around a group of ex-cops who weaponize their fists in deadly fashion to take on a dangerous crime syndicate. Alongside Kolstad, Sega’s Toru Nakahara and dj2 Entertainment’s Dmitri M. Johnson, Timothy I. Stevenson and Dan Jevons will produce the film. Nakahara, who produced the first two Sonic the Hedgehog movies to massive box office success, is overseeing the project for Sega alongside Shuji Utsumi. Streets of Rage...
Overwatch 2's mid-season update has been delayed at the last minute, leaving original hero Mei unplayable for the time being. A post on the official forums confirmed the patch has been pushed back due to an unexplained “critical issue” that was discovered shortly before it was due to go live. “Today’s patch is delayed as we work to resolve a critical issue,” Blizzard confirmed. “We’ll provide an update here and set the patch live as soon as the problem is addressed.” The patch will now go live on November 17 at 11am PST, so Mei mains won’t have too long to wait. Mei was removed from the game earlier this month due to a bug that allowed her to reach out-of-bounds locations using her Ice Wall ability. Essentially, players were able...
Starfield's original release date has come and gone but, despite fan disappointment, Xbox boss Phil Spencer is confident that delaying Bethesda's latest was the right move. Speaking to The Verge (and spotted by PC Gamer), Spencer said that releasing a game too early is a mistake the company has made before and, especially as Starfield is the first Bethesda game to be released as an Xbox exclusive, he wanted the developers to feel supported by their new publisher. "We have experience shipping games too early," Spencer said. "But in hindsight, when you look at a game like Starfield - which has taken so long and so much investment in new IP from the team - the decision to give the team the time to build the game that they feel they...

MultiVersus Season 2 begins today, and Warner Bros. Games has shared some of the content headed to the crossover fighting game. Season 2 will bring a handful of new challengers, and the first confirmed new fighter is Looney Tunes' Marvin the Martian. The character hails from Mars and is sent to destroy Earth, but he never quite succeeds. WB Games says more details about Marvin's kit are coming soon. A new stage based on Game of Thrones is also here for Season 2. The iconic Iron Throne rests in the background of the stage, and the music is an all-new remix of the Game of Thrones theme music. Season 2's Battle Pass is full of new badges, icons, banners, and taunts to unlock. There are also new Character Variants along both the Free...
Crystal Dynamics has announced that The Winter Soldier is joining the roster of playable characters in Marvel's Avengers on November 29. Announced in a blog post on the game's website, Crystal Dynamics revealed that The Winter Soldier will arrive alongside Cloning Lab Omega-Level Threat in Update 2.7. The Winter Soldier appears to be a completely fresh character (instead of a clone like Jane Foster is to Thor) but the post did say elements of Captain America and Black Widow can be seen in his move-set. "He adds to the roster an almost purely assault-focused hero focused on dealing damage to his enemies in a variety of ways," the post reads. "Players will find multiple different builds and playstyles to embody that character...
CD Projekt Red has confirmed that its major Cyberpunk 2077 expansion, Phantom Liberty, will be paid DLC when it's released in 2023. Speaking to Games Radar, CD Projekt Red's global PR director Radek Grabowski said that, while he couldn't yet confirm a price, the expansion wouldn't be more free DLC akin to the recent Edgerunners update. Though players familiar with CD Projekt Red may have expected as much, this is the first time the developer has explicitly confirmed that Phantom Liberty will cost money. Some confusion is warranted, of course, since CD Projekt Red does typically release a lot of free content for its games (including the next-gen update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt coming this December). Phantom Liberty is a much...
Bungie's anti-cheating legal battle appears to be leaning in the Destiny 2 developer's favour after the court ruled against cheats company AimJunkies' retaliation suit. As reported by TorrentFreak (and spotted by Eurogamer), U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Zilly sided with Bungie after AimJunkies accused the developer of hacking the computer of one cheat developer called James May. "May has failed to sufficiently allege that Bungie accessed his personal computer and files without authorization," Judge Zilly said. "To support his allegation that Bungie accessed his personal computer, May relies on a document that Bungie purportedly produced during discovery in this matter." He continued: "May, however, does not explain what this...
Today is a day of historical lows and sombre tributes. As you've no doubt heard in the news, voice actor Kevin 'Batman' Conroy passed in recent days—I've found a cheap way for newbies to experience his best work in gaming. Grab the Arkham trilogy and be amazed by how well it has aged (particularly in the face of Gotham Knights). The other big opportunities today: the lowest PC price I've ever seen on the equally timeless Red Dead Redemption 2. And ten bucks for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is lower than an Ewok limboing. You'd be nuts not to Force Pull that into your PlayStation collection. Somerville is a delightfully bizarre, physics-based puzzle adventure game that was developed by some of the former talent that created Playdead’s pair of modern classics: Limbo and Inside. And yet at the same time it plays very differently from those offerings, reminding me more of the seminal early-’90s classic Out of This World than Limbo or Inside with its upside-down setting, its color palette and character renderings, and its ever-rotating camera orientation from scene to scene. This was a pleasant surprise, though it isn’t nearly as polished or thought-provoking as its progenitors, leaving us with a very good game but ultimately not one I expect to be thinking about for very long now that I’ve finished it. Somerville opens in...

Atomic Heart is set in an alternate Soviet history world full of robots. They are each cleverly grounded in the lore of Atomic Heart - built by Facility 3826 to provide day-to-day help for the population - and definitely not going to try and kill you. Here, we’ll be taking a closer look at four of the many unique designs that developer Mundfish has created for Atomic Heart. MFU-68 Laborer One of the earlier models of bipedal civilian robots, the MFU-68 very quickly became a universal assistant in various areas of work. A considerable advantage of this small machine is the simplicity of its design, which allows it to operate in various weather and climatic conditions, move perfectly across rough terrain, and be equipped with a wide...
Improbable has announced that it's shutting down its free-to-play multiplayer game Scavengers on December 16, simply because not enough people are playing the game. "The last few months have seen a decline in the player base, and whilst we explored many options to reinvigorate server population while the game is in Early Access, it became clear that it was unsustainable to continue development and live service," Improbable said in a statement on its website. "We’re all proud of what we accomplished, and are grateful to every player who took the time to play, even if it was just for a short while." Scavengers was developed by Midwinter Entertainment and the game launched into Early Access on Steam back in May 2021. It's had a fairly...
CD Projekt Red has announced that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series next-gen update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be released on December 14. Announced in a post on The Witcher's official Twitter account (below), CD Projekt Red has stuck to its promise of a fourth quarter release by confirming the December date. "The next-gen update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is coming on December 14th, free for everyone who already owns the game," it said. The next-gen version of The Witcher 3, which is a "visually and technically enhanced" upgrade that includes bonus DLC based on The Witcher Netflix series, was originally expected to be released last year before being delayed twice. Third party studio Saber Interactive was originally...
In the lead up to big game launches, some developers like to share tidbits of what inspired their work: for many, it's other games. For some, it's tabletop campaigns, or film or TV. For Obsidian's Josh Sawyer, who is leading the development of Pentiment, it's history books. Specifically, history books about weird little dudes. While he's had a storied career working on hits like Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity, Sawyer's been ruminating on an historical game for a long, long time. His published reading list for Pentiment enthusiasts hearkens back to his college days; he tells me that working from it to develop Pentiment is "like going back to the greatest hits of my tour of studying early modern Europe in college." Here's...
Sony is leading the gaming hardware race into the holiday period as the PlayStation 5 was October 2022's best selling console in the U.S. According to the NPD Group's latest figures, the PS5 topped the hardware charts both in terms of units sold and dollar sales, with the Xbox Series X and S coming in second place. Hardware dollar sales fell by 10% overall compared to last year, however, with year-to-date spending for all video game products falling by 7%. On the software front, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 became the best selling game in October, marking 15 straight years that Call of Duty has claimed the top spot in its release month. Gotham Knights was the second best selling game despite a rough start. Sports titans FIFA 23...
It's been an age since I felt so captivated by such a simple adventure game as Pentiment. A rousing, steadily-paced detective thriller set in the Late Medieval Bavarian countryside, the storybook art style inspired by colorful manuscripts of the era is downright enthralling. While the gameplay basically consists of looking around for clues, questioning townsfolk, and trying to draw your own conclusions about the evidence you find, that minimalist approach works excellently for the rich and complex story Pentiment tells. Our inquisitive lead is Andeas Maler, initially an idealistic aspiring artist who comes to the picturesque, rustic town of Tassing to further his career in the nearby abbey's scriptorium. He quickly becomes embroiled...
