The Elder Scrolls Online developer ZeniMax Online Studios has moved to reassure concerned fans that it is still committed to the game despite the impact of significant layoffs at Xbox. Last week, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma started her “reset” of Microsoft’s gaming business by cutting 1,600 staff, with another 1,600 to go over the course of the next 12 months. Bethesda was hit hard by the layoffs. A Maryland WARN Act notice shows 213 employees were laid off from ZOS's office in Cockeysville, MD, and 166 from ZeniMax Media Inc. in Rockville, MD, for a total of 379. While it’s difficult to pin down exactly what the affected staff were working on at these studios because there are blended teams across Bethesda locations, the WARN numbers...
Emo rock band My Chemical Romance have discussed their love for Baldur's Gate during a recent show at Wembley Stadium — though singer Gerard Way revealed he's somehow yet to play Baldur's Gate 3. In a break between songs during the band's current The Black Parade 2026 Tour, MCR frontman Way was alerted to a group of fans holding up a banner asking the question: "Gerard, have you played Baldur's Gate 3?" The sign appears to be the work of TikTok user Katana Luciana, whose query caught the attention of the band — and clearly required a response. "No, I only played Baldur's Gate 1," Way responded. "Not that I probably wouldn't have liked 2 or 3. I did play the Icewind Dale expansion, but I just ran out of time, y'know." "Did you play...
As was feared after rumors of massive layoffs at Xbox started circulating shortly after this year’s Xbox Showcase, the axe has finally fallen at Team Green. While it is the latest in a series of devastating impact waves that have been hitting Xbox ever since its record $69 billion acquisition of Activision-Blizzard-King became official, it is at least a relief to know that the four studios whose fates seemed in doubt – Double Fine, Compulsion, Undead Labs, and Ninja Theory – will all live to fight another day as either independent studios or under new corporate ownership (a fifth, Arkane, remains in flux as Microsoft must navigate French labor laws). But business will clearly be handled differently at Xbox moving forward. New Xbox CEO...
Introducing False Echo, a Papers, Please-inspired 2D pixel-art cryptographic narrative adventure set aboard a WWII submarine. In short, you will man communications via the Obscura machine, figure out what's true and what's false, and use your intuition and deduction prowess to make critical decisions. Multiple endings await based on your choices. Developer Retromagine describes the gameplay as follows: "Operate the Obscura machine to process transmissions. Adjust rotors, connect cables, align signals. Decipher the truth by the standards of the Oppressian Empire. Use the ECHO system to classify messages as TRUE or FALSE. Rules change every day. Orders contradict each other. Truth has many forms, and you must find the one the regime will...
The creative team behind LA Noire considered Mad Men star Jon Hamm for the role of Cole Phelps. I recently interviewed Daniel McMahon, a writer who worked on the Rockstar-published LA Noire, for a YouTube video about the 2011 detective game and its cancelled successor, Whore of the Orient. Our conversation was wide-spanning, but I was curious about one thing: was Jon Hamm ever considered for a part in the game? For those that don't know, LA Noire features a number of actors from the TV series Mad Men, including Aaron Staton, the man who plays the game's protagonist, Cole Phelps. Hamm's breakout role came from playing the lead of Don Draper in Mad Men, so I figured he must've been on developer Team Bondi's radar. McMahon noted that...
Obsidian Entertainment director Brandon Adler is tired of seeing "cold take artists" who are "running their mouths" about how the studio has changed following recent Xbox layoffs. The developer responsible for directing The Outer Worlds 2, as well as a new unannounced project, made his feelings about the conversation surrounding Obsidian clear in a LinkedIn post (via Eurogamer). Noting that it's been "an extremely difficult week" for the team, he spent time bidding farewell to those who were let go before addressing those who have been "coming out of the woodwork to talk about" what the studio "is or what it isn't." "Another difficult aspect is having to see a bunch of cold take artists coming out of the woodwork to talk about what...

Activision has clarified that its recently released Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 ports do in fact support crossplay between PS4 and PS5, following confusion from players online. The official Call of Duty Update X/Twitter account confirmed how the feature works amid a flurry of posts from fans across social media. It comes with clarification that those across both PlayStation platforms will be able to play multiplayer with one another, while also sharing that Season Pass owners can matchmake with non-Season Pass owners, too. "PS4 and PS5 players are able to matchmake with one another," Activision said. "There is no cross-platform play with PS3 or other hardware platforms." When the publisher announced Iron Galaxy was developing...

What are some of the best-looking games of all time? Many examples that come to my mind are not from this generation, but rather the early 2010s: Metal Gear Solid 5, The Witcher 3, and Batman: Arkham Knight all looked stunning upon release, and still do today. To this list I would also add Ryse: Son of Rome, German developer Crytek’s ill-fated Xbox One launch title in which you play as a Roman centurion seeking to avenge his dead family. It is gloriously, mouth-wateringly cinematic, more so than many actual works of cinema. Unfortunately, it’s also rather short, taking only around 6 hours to complete. Former employees say as much as two thirds of planned content had to be cut in the race to make launch day. The crunch was brutal, but...
Bethesda was hit hard by this week’s Xbox layoffs, with cuts to The Elder Scrolls and Fallout developer Bethesda Game Studios, Doom developer id Software, and The Elder Scrolls Online developer ZeniMax Online Studios, among other parts of the business. A Maryland WARN Act notice shows 213 employees were laid off from ZOS's office in Cockeysville, MD, and 166 from ZeniMax Media Inc. in Rockville, MD, for a total of 379. 96 staff who worked at id Software's office in Richardson, Texas, were cut, alongside a further 40 remote roles. While it’s difficult to pin down exactly what the affected staff were working on at these studios because there are blended teams across Bethesda locations, the WARN numbers undoubtedly make for difficult...
Ubisoft has announced that Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced has passed 2 million copies sold in its first day since launch. It's a milestone that saw it rank among the best in the franchise and arrived alongside strong player numbers across various platforms. Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced's July 9 launch saw it land in the number one spot on Twitch, while its concurrent player count on Steam reached a peak of 99,451, a series high. "Black Flag has always held a special place in the heart of the community, and ours." Head of Assassin's Creed brand Martin Schelling said in a statement. "Bringing it back with Resynced was a promise to that passion for Edward’s adventures, and to the unique sense of freedom players experienced...
EA Sports College Football 27 has launched to "Mostly Negative" Steam reviews as fans revolt against pricey microtransactions in offline game modes. The latest in EA's line of College Football video games immediately came under fire when it launched for early access on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X | S July 6. It all stems from the removal of features for the Road to Glory and Dynasty modes in favor of microtransactions that range from $9.99 to $149.99. In College Football 25 and 26, offline versions of these modes allowed players to customize their experience by using settings to boost XP gain. In College Football 27, EA has gutted those settings, replacing them with the option to spend real-world money to increase things like a...
I think a lot about going back and doing things over – making a few choices differently to see how things end up. But then I think about the butterfly effect that would have, and how it could potentially make things worse. After the 10 hours I’ve spent with the new Backyard Baseball so far, I’m now sure it would be a bad idea. This series reboot from developer Mega Cat Studios retains the nostalgic charm of those classic kids sports games, but the rest of it falls victim to its own progress. The simplicity of pitching, hitting, and fielding has been needlessly refreshed; in its place is an optimized version, like a grown-up going back in time to perfect his younger self. The result might be one that passes the eye test, but it’s...
id Software has issued a statement following layoffs at Xbox that saw roughly half the staff at the legendary first-person shooter studio lose their jobs. On Wednesday, a WARN notice filed in Texas reported by Game Developer confirmed that 96 workers had been laid off in Richardson, Texas, home of id Software, with a further 40 remote roles cut. The cuts were part of new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s “reset” of Microsoft’s gaming business, which began with 1,600 staff losing their jobs on Monday. Another 1,600 will be let go during the rest of the current financial year. Four Xbox studios are already out the door, with another hot on their heels. Some have expressed concern that id Software would be unable to lead development on any new...
Cyberpunk 2077 is having a moment, with impressive player numbers on Steam fueled by a recent sale, hype for upcoming Netflix anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 and its collaboration with Wuthering Waves. And while Cyberpunk 2077 is a known quantity at this point, and CD Projekt has told fans not to expect any more DLC, fans are calling on the developer to change its mind and release more DLC — just like The Witcher 3 is getting. Earlier this month, CD Projekt confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 had sold an incredible 40 million copies since its December 2020 launch, up 5 million from November 2025. It's received one expansion so far, 2023's Phantom Liberty starring Idris Elba. In May, CD Projekt insisted it had “no plans” for further Cyberpunk...
Few missions in GTA’s history would make such a big and noticeable change to the geography of the host city as Bomb Da Base Act II, which goes some way to explaining why all 45 seconds of this short, sharp, Tin Can Alley sniper mission remains so memorable. By today’s standards it’s extraordinarily simple: in a world where there are entire games built around the sophisticated premise of telescopic sharpshooting, GTA 3’s 45-second dalliance with the idea hardly seems like anything to write home about. But make no mistake: with GTA 3, Rockstar invented the modern video game, and with Bomb da Base Act II, GTA reinvented itself. Bomb Da Base proved to be a tantalising early glimpse at the ever more complex, Bruckheimer-worthy setpieces...
Palworld players have spotted that developer Pocketpair has altered several Pal designs for the 1.0 launch, leaving some saying they now look less like the Pokémon they had resembled. Pocketpair published detailed patch notes for Palworld's 1.0 version earlier this week listing hundreds of additions, changes and improvements. However, these patch notes do not discuss the changes to several Pal designs, leaving players to instead discover the updated looks for themselves. With Palworld 1.0 now out in the wild, players are doing just that — and have remarked on the alterations to Verdash, Robinquill, Fengallop, and Grintale, which previously displayed more distinct similarities to more familiar Pokémon species Cinderace, Decidueye...

The book will include 45 total projects accompanied by new illustrations and plenty of tips from Pelican Town residents. A hardcover and eBook edition are scheduled to be released on January 26, 2027, and both versions are already available to preorder from pretty much anywhere you can buy books. Stardew Valley Is Getting an Official Crochet Book While...
If the recent sad news of Sony ending physical disc production for new games releasing on PlayStation in 2028 has you looking to stock up on physical games now, Amazon has plenty of deals worth checking out. At the moment, the retailer even has a little discount on Crimson Desert for both PS5 and Xbox Series X, with the former down to $56.04 (20% off its list price) and the latter down to $59.84 (15% off). These may not be huge discounts, but according to price tracker camelcamelcamel, this is the lowest price point so far for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X copies at the retailer. There's no telling how long they'll stay at these prices, either, so now is a great time to grab them before the price kicks back up. While initial...
Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced has faced a stormy start on Steam, where the $60 game's collection of optional extras totals $85. Despite positive reviews from critics, fans left scathing feedback on the game's Steam store page regarding the array of $10 cosmetic packs available on day one, in addition to a $5 map pack add-on. None of these types of content are unusual for an Assassin's Creed game, though the sheer number available at launch, as well as their pricing, has drawn ire. So much so, that Ubisoft has now seen fit to respond — to remind players that such add-ons are not vital. "Come on Ubisoft you just couldn't hold yourself huh?!" wrote one player. "Releasing a 70 euro game and on the DAY of the release you slap us...
Activision’s ports of the much-loved Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 immediately raised eyebrows for their price, but they’ve come under fire for their disappointing graphics performance, too. The tech experts at Digital Foundry have taken a look at the port of the original 2010 Black Ops to PlayStation, and had a few choice words to say about the work Activision put into it. Chief among their complaints is the fact the Black Ops port runs at 1080p, not 4K, despite being a 16-year-old game that began life on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Not only that, there’s no anti-aliasing. DF also criticized the frame-rate, which is limited to 60Hz even on PS5. “A 1080p60 presentation would be potentially...
Actor Peter Serafinowicz has revealed how a chance encounter with fellow Dark Souls superfan Alex Garland led to him landing a role in the upcoming Elden Ring movie. Serafinowicz, who is best known as the voice of Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, for playing Pete in Shaun of the Dead, Garthan Saal in Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Sommelier in John Wick: Chapter 2, picked Dark Souls as one of his Five Brilliant Things in an interview with British comedian Russell Howard. Serafinowicz spoke passionately of his love for Dark Souls in the interview, explaining in great detail how its infamous difficulty makes it one of the most rewarding video games ever created. “Once that clicks, it's like, oh my god, this is...
Before Palworld’s Early Access debut in 2024, I remember eagerly wanting to review the completely unhinged-looking “Pokemon with guns” game, mostly as a joke. Hilariously, the joke was on me when it not only became one of the biggest games of the year, but also one of my all-time favorite survival games. With its 1.0 update now finally at-hand over two years later, I was quite excited to jump back into this strange, sometimes-oddly-dark creature collector. Though I’m only a dozen hours into a fresh playthrough of the 1.0 version, so far it has improved in all the ways I hoped it would after sinking so much time into its earliest incarnation. Most of the technical rough edges have been smoothed over, progression has been smartly...
For whatever reason, a bunch of video game companies are helping advertise Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced. The social accounts for Control, Dead by Daylight, and various gaming hardware companies such as SteelSeries have had their accounts taken over by marketing for Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced. The long-awaited remaster/remake of the beloved Assassin's Creed game dropped today and, to apparently help spread the word, all of these accounts posted about the game. Epic Game Store also rebranded its socials by changing its profile picture and banner to feature Black Flag-themed imagery. McDonald's even chimed in as well. The various accounts made posts claiming to have been "boarded" while throwing up the game's signature...
John Carmack has responded to the significant layoffs at Doom developer id Software, expressing sadness but not “anger or outrage.” On Wednesday, a WARN notice filed in Texas reported by Game Developer confirmed that 96 workers had been laid off in Richardson, Texas, home of id Software, with a further 40 remote roles cut. Reports indicate 50% of staff have lost their jobs. The cuts come as part of new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s “reset” of Microsoft’s gaming business, which began with 1,600 staff losing their jobs on Monday. Another 1,600 will be let go during the rest of the current financial year. Four Xbox studios are already out the door, with another hot on their heels. Carmack, who co-founded id Software in 1991 alongside John...
Dell is offering an especially rare deal on an Alienware 16X Aurora gaming laptop that's loaded with a generous amount of memory and storage, especially considering today's outrageous RAM and SSD prices. That's $2,500 (50%) off MSRP and beats the lowest price I last saw for this exact same config by over $500. Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 are now available on PS4 and PS5, but they won't come cheap. Both of the original Black Ops games have been released digitally on PS4 and PS5 for $40 each. That means if you want both games, they'll cost $80... and if you want all of the DLC, that's also going to cost you. Both games offer a separate season pass, priced at $29.99 a piece. So, if you want the complete experience, you will have to pay a whopping $140 for games that came out a decade and a half ago, something fans had been fearing for the last few weeks. There is one saving grace, though. If you are a PlayStation Plus subscriber, you get a massive discount. Both games are $20 each and their season passes are $9 each, coming out to a total...
Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is off to a strong start on Steam, with around 100,000 concurrent players — more than any other title in the franchise to date. Ubisoft's ground-up remake of its beloved pirate adventure game currently has launch peak of 99,451 players at the time of writing, making it comfortably the series' best ever launch on Steam. By comparison, 2025's feudal Japan-set Assassin's Creed Shadows recorded a launch peak of 64,825 players, while the Ancient Greek-set Assassin's Creed Odyssey earned 62,069. Not all Assassin's Creed games have appeared on Steam at launch (the hugely-popular Viking entry Valhalla turned up later), so comparisons aren't entirely straightforward. Still, no other Assassin's Creed game...
