Devolver Digital are auteurs of style. It's a reputation the publisher has cultivated over the course of 15 years—from the gloriously bloodsoaked Hotline Miami to the ridiculously macabre Carrion—and if you, too, feel like life is better with a rhapsodically gory indie project on hand, then you'll be pleased to know that Children of the Sun is the ideal harbinger of Devolver's legacy. Limbs will fly, brain matter will splatter, the squeamish will be appalled, but like so many of the company's hits, a rock-solid design foundation ties everything together. Consider Children of the Sun to be something like Rebellion’s Sniper Elite. You take control of a woman who has escaped the clutches of a sinister cult. To get her revenge, she has...
We got our first proper look at the Silent Hill 2 Remake during yesterday's State of Play and, as someone who adored the original game, I immediately noticed a handful of familiar scenes. From James' first steps into the Woodside apartments to his encounter with Pyramid Head, it's possible to see that while many things have remained faithful in the Remake, others things have changed. Take a look at the video or slideshow above to see the similarities and differences we spotted in the first trailer for Silent Hill 2 Remake. And if you haven't already, check out the trailer itself below. Continue reading...
NFL star Jason Kelce is on a mission to find out who owns the rights to the Backyard Sports franchise, as the Philadelphia Eagles center is interested in reviving Backyard Baseball and Backyard Football games. In the latest episode of podcast New Heights, which Jason co-hosts with his younger brother Travis, the two briefly reminisce about playing Backyard Football on the computer before Jason reveals that he has been "secretly" trying to figure out who owns the rights because he wants to bring back Backyard Baseball and Backyard Football for modern platforms. "I don't even know if I want to mention this cause I have secretly been looking into seeing if anybody holds the rights to Backyard Football and Backyard Baseball, cause I...
Annual sports games always face the same issue: What do you add to an already refined (and successful) formula for an individual effort to stand out from the pack? Countless series’ have had to tackle this problem, such as NBA 2K, EA Sports FC and now, following its recent revival, WWE 2K. Last year’s hugely popular WWE 2K23 is without question still an extremely good wrestling game package, so cynical players may just conclude that this year’s upcoming entry, WWE 2K24, isn’t an essential upgrade. But from what I’ve played so far, WWE 2K24 has added enough exciting gameplay-focused innovations that it's definitely worth your attention. Let me talk to ya… Although the next game in this long line of releases will naturally update and...
Upcoming Obsidian RPG Avowed takes place in Eora, which in the fictional universe of Pillars of Eternity, is pretty diverse. But after Pillars let players choose from a number of different character races, fans have been wondering for some time now why Avowed is only letting them pick human or elf when customizing a player character. We've learned that Avowed player character creation is limited to making either a human or an elf in previous game reveals - no dwarves, no aumauas, and definitely no godlikes. While this has been a disappointment to some fans, Avowed game director Carrie Patel has made it clear that the reasons for this limitation are twofold: it's both a story choice and a development decision. On the story side, Patel...
Developer 4A Games has made clear Metro Awakening, the PSVR2 game announced during the January 2024 PlayStation State of Play, is not the next mainline Metro game but instead a spin-off. Following its announcement at the State of Play, Metro fans without Sony's $550 / £530 PlayStation 5 accessory grew a little concerned they'd waited five years for another game only to see it announced for a platform they didn't own or want. 4A Games took to X/Twitter to alleviate these concerns, however, reassuring fans it's still working on the next multiplatform mainline Metro game, while Awakening is developed by Vertigo Games. "This is not the next mainline Metro game by 4A Games," the developer said. "That is still in development and, as we...
Palworld developer Pocketpair has released a significant new patch for the Steam version of the game that makes a number of fixes. Steam patch v0.1.4.0 fixes crash issues, gameplay issues, and glitches, among other things. Elsewhere, there are fixes for base issues, including one that means Pals who are manually assigned to a breeding farm will not become hungry and their manual assignments will not be removed. Some of the bugs fixed by this patch are worth highlighting because they’re quite funny. For example, there’s a fix for an issue where Pals at the base would continue to cut down trees that were already cut (talk about a thankless task), and a fix for an issue where Pals at the base were on the verge of death due to...
Following a report published last week, PlayStation has officially confirmed that Until Dawn is coming to PS5 and PC. Announced during the PlayStation State of Play, the PS5 version of Until Dawn will arrive on PC and PS5 sometime this year. As common with remasters, the forthcoming ports will include graphical and performance improvements, with developer Ballistic Moon tasked with enhancing the game for modern platforms. Originally released on the PS4 in 2015, Until Dawn is a choose-your-own-adventure video game developed by Supermassive Games. While the studio is best known these days for making choice-filled horror games that are borderline interactive movies, such as The Dark Pictures Anthology, Until Dawn helped establish...
We already knew that Judas, a first-person sci-fi action game from BioShock creator Kevin Levine, was in development. And today, we got a new trailer, containing what I would call some serious BioShock vibes. As one of a handful of announcements from today's January 2024 State of Play, Ghost Story Games showed off a new look. We didn't get a release date, but the footage says it's "currently in development for PS5." It's also slated to release on PC and Xbox Series X/S. Ghost Story Games' parent company, Take-Two Interactive, announced last February that the game planned to be released before the end of March 2025. Judas was reported to be in "development hell" before its official unveiling. Ghost Story Games shared a first true...
At the first State of Play of 2024, Stunlock Studios announced that its fantasy survival game V Rising is coming to PS5 sometime this year. V Rising was released in Early Access in May 2022 on Steam. Set in an open world, V Rising has players controlling a vampire who recently woke up and tasked with venturing across the world and defeating bosses, feeding on the blood of enemy NPCs, and avoiding hazards that will kill your character, such as direct sunlight. Following its release into Early Access, Stunlock Studios announced V Rising was close to hitting 50,000 players a day after its release. As of May 2022, V Rising has sold over 1.5 million copies, according to the developer. In our review of V Rising, we said: "While its...
After months of speculation and leaks, Blooper Team's highly-anticipated remake of Silent Hill 2 has resurfaced at last. Silent Hill 2 was shown during Wednesday's State of Play presentation, but unfortunately without a release date. As part of the State of Play presentation today, the new trailer showcased new gameplay. A 2024 release date would not be entirely surprising as Sony prematurely announced earlier this month in a trailer that Silent Hill 2 Remake, along with other games such as Rise of the Ronin and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, were all slated to release this year on PS5. Blooper Team first announced it was remaking Silent Hill 2 in 2022. Following its announcement, Blooper Team confirmed that while the gameplay...
Metro, the single-player first-person post-apocalyptic shooter based on the novels by Dmitry Glukhovsky, is headed to virtual reality headsets. Announced during the first State of Play of 2024, Metro Awakening is a new VR game that will arrive exclusively on the PlayStation VR2 in 2024. In a new PS Blog Post, Metro Awakening is set before the events of 2010's Metro 2033. In Awakening, layers control Seerdar, a doctor searching the metro tunnels to find his wife. Unlike other games in the Metro franchise, Awakening is developed by Vertigo Games This is the most recent entry to be announced in 4A Games' first-person shooter franchise, spawning four games, with the most recent release, Metro Exodus, released in 2019. In our review of...
Sega officially announced Sonic x Shadow Generations, a Sonic Generations remaster featuring Sonic's edgiest friend, during today's PlayStation State of Play. We got a brief glimpse at Sonic and Shadow zooming through some levels, but little information otherwise. We do, however, know that it's slated for "Autumn 2024." This is Sonic's latest outing in 3D following the release of the Apple Arcade exclusive Sonic Dream Team and 2022's Sonic Frontiers. "Superb level design and bite-sized missions make Sonic Dream Team one of the most fun, creative, and enjoyable 3D platformers I've played in a long time," my colleague Chris Reed wrote in his review of Sonic Dream Team. Beyond a new Sonic game in development, the blue hedgehog is...
After missing its 2023 release window, developer Shift Up has shared a new trailer for its third-person action-adventure PlayStation 5 exclusive Stellar Blade, along with a new release date of April 26, 2024. As part of today's January 2024 State of Play presentation, Stellar Blade's new trailer revealed impressive visuals alongside a ton of fast-paced slashy gameplay. Stellar Blade was first announced all way back in 2019, then known under the codename Project Eve, and was initially announced for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The game would then appear two years later at a September 2021 State of Play presentation, where it was presented as a PS5 exclusive. Roughly a year later, Shift Up would share another trailer and a blog post...
PlayStation hosted its first State of Play event of 2024 today, and we got for over 40 minutes of updates on games coming to PS5. This included extended looks at Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin, as well as some surprises like Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Sonic x Shadow Generations. Here's everything that happened at the January 2024 State of Play. Death Stranding 2 Is Officially Titled Death Stranding 2: On the Beach Kojima Productions shared a traditionally lengthy trailer for Death Stranding 2, which is now officially titled Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Norman Reedus' Sam Porter Bridges returns, and it appears he's facing off against a new group called Drawbridge. There was a lengthy sequence with a potential villain...
Palworld, playfully dubbed as "Pokémon with guns" on account of its similar-looking monster designs, has experienced a meteoric rise in the three weeks since its launch as one of the biggest releases in gaming history. While the argument over whether Palworld is a rip-off of Pokémon is still being debated among fans and Nintendo's lawyers, what's not up for discussion is that the game's overwhelming success has garnered it Microsoft's support moving forward. In a recent blog post on Xbox Wire, Xbox announced that it will be working directly with Pocketpair, the developers of Palworld, to assist in supplying the resources necessary to keep the momentum of the monster survival game going strong. "On Xbox’s part, we’re working with...
With games like Starfield and Baldur's Gate 3 last year having players wax poetic about which of their video game besties they most want to smooch, it can sometimes feel like romance systems are becoming a staple of AAA party-based RPGs. But that's not going to be the case with Avowed, which is opting to forego a dedicated romance system for a focus on "building thoughtful relationships" with companions instead. This comes from an interview IGN did with Avowed game director Carrie Patel, where she confirmed Avowed would not feature romance options, and why: "We are building thoughtful relationships with our companion characters," she said. "Ultimately, I personally am a fan of making that an option, but I feel like if you're going to...
Out of nowhere, Inner Sloth released the first image from the highly anticipated Among Us animated Series, offering fans a familiar glimpse of the show. The first image, as seen in the post on the official Among Us X/Twitter account, shows the cafeteria from Among Us' original map, the Skeld. Pizza and plates spread across the tables, along with some balloons and a blood-covered banner that visibly shows the words "We're Dead." The Among Us animated series was first announced last June, and it was reported that the developer was involved in the project, with Regular Show writer and storyboard artist Owen Dennis spearheading the project. Titmouse, the studio behind animated series such as Big Mouth and Star Trek: Lower Decks, is...
Palworld’s monstrously successful launch has reached another milestone, with developer Pocketpair announcing that it has hit more than 19 million total players since launching less than two weeks ago. The team shared the news on its official X/Twitter account, breaking down the numbers as it promises to prioritize bug fixes. On Steam, where the Pokémon-like experience costs $29.99, Palworld has managed to capture a whopping 12 million players. The other 7 million players come from Xbox, where the project found enormous success on Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft provided its own statement regarding this latest achievement via Xbox Wire, proclaiming that Palworld now holds the title of the biggest third-party Game Pass launch in history...
February is right around the corner and with it comes a new batch of games to play on PlayStation Plus. Today, Sony revealed in a PlayStation Blog that Foamstars, Rollerdome, and Steelrising will be available to PlayStation Plus members from February 6 to March 4. The above PS Plus games aren't the only things Sony has cooking for players in February. The blog post also announced PS Plus subscribers will receive a Fall Guys Icons Pack allowing them to fashion their little bean dudes in cosmetics, patterns, nameplates, and costumes of Aloy from the Horizon series and Ratchet & Clank from... well, Ratchet & Clank. In addition to the PlayStation-centric Fall Guys cosmetic pack, PS Plus Premium and Deluxe subscribers can look forward to...
Remedy Entertainment has released update 1.15 for Alan Wake 2 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC, adding a highly requested option to turn down the game's spookiness. Revealed in a blog post, the patch notes also point to myriad bug fixes alongside the addition of a chapter select option in the main menu, letting players hoover up those final collectibles with more ease. Remedy is quick to point out "the update also includes the much-requested option to tune down the horror flashes", with players able to choose between Low and Normal horror flash visual and audio intensity. As for chapter select, players can choose to replay any mission in the game, loading into a pre-made save regardless of their own progress. "This will also...
After teasing something last month, PDP officially announced the Riffmaster, a new wireless guitar controller releasing this Spring. The PDP Riffmaster has two configurations: one compatible with the Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One, while the other works on PS4 and PS5. As you can see from the images below, at first glance, it looks similar to plastic guitar controllers made at the height of Guitar Hero and Rock Band's popularity. But a closer examination reveals some noticeable changes to the formula. Most notably, the Riffmaster has a thumbstick behind the guitar, an ambidextrous design, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a promised battery life of 36 hours on a single charge. Riffmaster's disassembly, meanwhile, is pretty unique. Instead of...
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 is back with a fresh look at gameplay following its move to Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture developer The Chinese Room. In the video, we see player character Phyre engage in combat from the upcoming first-person action RPG sequel, due out fall 2024 on PC, Xbox Series X and S, and PlayStation 5. In the video we see an early-game mission in which Phyre infiltrates an abandoned warehouse to uncover clues about the mysterious mark on their hand. The combat involves stealth-focused gameplay and plenty of blood-sucking, as you’d expect. But when the action kicks off proper, we see just how punchy Phyre can be. We’re then treated to a rather disturbing cutscene in which Phyre confronts the court's...
Square Enix is absorbing Tokyo RPG Factory, a studio that was dedicated to replicating the “golden age” of RPGs from the 90s. According to Gamebiz.jp, Square Enix will acquire all of the rights and obligations of Tokyo RPG Factory, and the studio will effectively be dissolved. Tokyo RPG Factory was founded in 2014 and its internal structure relied on freelancers and volunteer staff from other departments within Square Enix. The studio released its first game, I Am Setsuna, in 2016, then followed up with Lost Sphear in 2017 and Oninaki in 2019. Respectively, the three games were themed after the Japanese concept, “snow, moon, and flowers,” representing seasons of the year. After Oninaki’s release, Tokyo RPG Factory discussed what its...
Granblue Fantasy Versus may have introduced an entirely new fanbase to Gran's grand adventure in 2020, but as a fan of the mobile RPGs before it, I came into Granblue Fantasy: Relink with very different expectations. Finally making the jump from phones to PC and PlayStation, the series has embraced exhilarating real-time action that feels right at home alongside other ambitious story-driven games like Final Fantasy XVI or Star Ocean: The Divine Force. But its clear mobile roots are a double-edged sword – the storytelling may be tighter and less bloated than its contemporaries, but other parts just don’t feel quite up to snuff for a game of this scale. Still, Granblue Fantasy: Relink’s fun combat and charming characters have kept me...
For years, skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) has been the hottest of topics within the Call of Duty community, with some proclaiming it ruins the experience, others saying quite the opposite. High-skilled Call of Duty players often bemoan SBMM for chucking them into what they call “sweaty” lobbies full of similarly high-skilled players. All the while, Activision has remained silent on how exactly Call of Duty’s SBMM actually works — until now. In a blog post, which is “starting the conversation about matchmaking in Call of Duty”, Activision pulled back the curtain on SBMM for the first time, and gave players plenty to chew on. According to Activision, Call of Duty does consider skill (or more specifically player performance) as a...
Sega of America is laying off 61 staff on March 8, 2024 as job losses continue to devastate the video game industry. As reported by GI.biz, the employees affected currently work across two locations at Sega's Irvine, California campus, with 12 being laid off from one office and 49 from another. The job losses come just a few months after workers at Sega of America voted to unionise under the Communications Workers of America, forming AEGIS-CWA. According to this group, who made a series of posts on X/Twitter in response to the layoffs, workers across quality assurance and localisation departments were affected. "A few months ago, Sega management announced their plan to outsource QA and part of localization in a move that would...
In a world where we're being bombarded by constant hype about AI, getting to mow down some chrome-plated baddies is kind of cathartic. Playing through the first several missions of Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance, I found myself leading a ragtag band of human survivors trying to evade hostile machines in a slightly clunky but overall competent squad-based RTS. And there are some interesting ideas glimmering in the gaps beneath its synthetic flesh. A bit of wiki diving revealed that Definace is set in something called the "Dark Fate" timeline, which was apparently established as an alternate reality through time travel shenanigans in the 2019 film of that name. I grew up on the classic Terminator films, but I haven't kept up with any...
The developer of Palworld has warned people against downloading fake mobile phone games that look like they’re Palworld. In a tweet, Palworld developer Pocketpair said “there is no Palworld application for phones”, after noticing apps using names and product images from Palworld had popped up on the App Store and Google Play. “They are not affiliated with our company in any way,” the statement continued. “We have reported this issue to Apple, which operates the App Store, and Google, which operates Google Play. Please be aware that downloading these apps may lead to the leakage of personal information stored on your smartphone or to fraud.” It’s perhaps unsurprising to see fake Palworld mobile apps appear given the enormous sales...
CD Projekt Red has released patch 2.11 for Cyberpunk 2077, addressing myriad bugs and balance issues in its open-world role-playing game. Released on its website, the patch notes "focused on fixing the most common issues encountered by players, including finisher animations, and added a little something for Rayfield enthusiasts". Update 2.1 added a ton of new features to the game, on top of the already colossal Update 2.0, so a lot of this latest patch, available now for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC, looks to address smaller issues baked in with them. Melee finishers, dashes turning into crouches, and wrongly upgrading items have all been fixed among other issues. CD Projekt Red has also adjusted the frequency of car...
