Last week, a Reddit user by the name of u/SayFuzzyPickles42 took to r/Nintendo to ask a rather strange question: “Weird question - why is the highest user-reviewed Nintendo game of all time an obscure DSiWare game called Metal Torrent?” According to FuzzyPickles, they were looking at Nintendo’s user reviews to see where Pikmin 4 had landed, and were surprised to see an obscure DSiWare title called Metal Torrent at the top with a sky-high 9.6 rating. It currently sits above classics like Super Metroid (for Wii), Pokemon SoulSilver, the Metroid Prime Trilogy, and Banjo-Kazooie in the user ratings, despite having a much lower critical Metascore of 62. In the replies, a handful of fellow redditors offered their theories about this...
Post Malone has bought the one-of-a-kind Magic: The Gathering Card, Lord of the Rings' The One Ring, which was valued at $2 million. Though the owner of the One Ring card was previously unknown, a social media user called Brook Trafton shared a video of (presumably) themselves meeting Post Malone and selling the card. The 13-second clip doesn't show much but does see the rapper evaluating the card before saying: "Yeah, I'll take it." It's unconfirmed how much Post Malone paid for The One Ring, but as trading card buying and collecting company Dave and Adam's Card World was willing to pay $2 million for it, it was likely a life-changing amount. Trafton looks to break down in tears after Post Malone agrees to take the card and the...
A physical version of the recently-released, previously digital-only Star Trek: Resurgence comes out October 6 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Xbox One. PS4 owners get a free upgrade to the PS5 version (currently the PS5 plays the PS4 version in emulation). The new versions include a raft of bug fixes and quality-of-life additions, too. Star Trek: Resurgence is a third-person narrative adventure game developed by Dramatic Labs, a team that includes over 20 former Telltale staff. It tells an original story set shortly after Star Trek: The Next Generation and follows the crew of the U.S.S. Resolute. IGN’s Star Trek: Resurgence review beamed up a 7/10: “The story of Star Trek: Resurgence does an excellent job...
Diablo 4 was the best-selling game in June 2023 in the U.S., according to new data. Circana’s U.S. video game market results for June 2023 reveals Blizzard’s action role-playing game is the third best-selling game of 2023 so far, behind only Hogwarts Legacy and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. That stat doesn’t come as a surprise: Diablo 4 is Blizzard’s fastest-selling game of all time with over 10 million players. The launch of Diablo 4 even propelled Blizzard’s financials to record levels. Final Fantasy 16, meanwhile, was the second best-selling game of June in the U.S. Its sales have become something of a battleground after Square Enix announced the PlayStation 5 exclusive sold three million copies during launch week...
Microsoft has said attendees at gamescom 2023 can expect to see the largest booth Xbox has ever had as well as the return of Xbox FanFest. Over 30 games across 150 gaming stations are set for the booth, Microsoft said, alongside a 300-seat theatre in which Bethesda Game Studios will show a Starfield presentation, Turn 10 will show a Forza presentation, and Oxide Games will show an Ara: History Untold presentation. Neither Starfield, Forza, nor Ara: History Untold will be playable at gamescom, however. Microsoft is yet to announce an Xbox showcase for gamescom 2023 and it looks like the focus is firmly on games set to come out in 2023 or the early part of 2024. There’s no mention of Playground’s Fable, Obsidian’s Avowed, Compulsion...
More pizza toppings don’t mean a better pizza. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles might like to put a bunch of ridiculous nonsense on their pies, but it’s hard to deny the simple pleasures of a slice of plain cheese or pepperoni when it’s done right. A similar declaration could be made about video games, and as cool as it is to see the medium constantly pushing the boundaries of new technology, sometimes less is more. Take for instance Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, which went back to basics, iterating on everything that made the original TMNT arcade game so beloved without losing sight of its charm. Shredder’s Revenge capitalized on millennial nostalgia for the original arcade game. Some of that nostalgia might be...
A newly-surfaced Diablo 4 glitch lets players transfer their Eternal Realm characters into the Seasonal Realm, sparking concern about the potential of a Blizzard ban. YouTuber Glitch Unlimited posted a video breaking down this inter-realm travel and what it enables. In summary, to exploit the glitch you need to be in a group with a friend in the Seasonal Realm, briefly disconnect your internet, then log back into the Seasonal Realm with your Eternal character. Eternal characters who exploit this glitch can benefit from the Seasonal Blessing experience boost, which will let them level up faster than they would normally be able to. Eternal Realm characters can also carry over their gear and inventory items, which creates obvious issues...
Capcom has issued verdicts on the initial sales performance of the recently-released Street Fighter 6 and Exoprimal. Street Fighter 6 sold two million copies in just over a month which, in a note to investors, Capcom said was “generally progressing in line with our expectations”, adding it hoped positive word of mouth would fuel follow-up success. “Compared to the internal plan for the title, sales are generally progressing in line with our expectations,” Capcom said. “We believe that its positive critical reception will work as a tailwind in expanding future sales of the game as a catalogue title.” Capcom said it's aiming for Street Fighter 6 to outsell Street Fighter 5, which means selling over 10 million over the course of its...
Saints Row’s third and potentially final expansion, A Song Of Ice And Dust, comes out August 8, developer Volition has announced. The expansion launches ahead of Saint Row's August 24 Steam release, which comes alongside a new activity for players on all platforms. Volition has yet to detail A Song Of Ice And Dust, save mention of new missions, new cosmetics, new weapons, new vehicles, and a brief blurb: “When a crippling ambush decimates the Dustlanders, it’s up to fierce rivals Bossonius and Gwendolyn Firebird to join forces and defend The DustFaire from a new foe.” Yep, it’s Saints Row does Game of Thrones. A Song Of Ice And Dust is the final piece of DLC outlined in Saints Row’s post-launch roadmap and potentially brings an end...
The developer of Baldur’s Gate 3 has told fans to delete the Early Access version, any save files and mods, and do a fresh install when the hotly-anticipated role-playing game launches proper on August 3. Baldur’s Gate 3 has been in Early Access on Steam since October 2020 and developer Larian has already warned players they face a 122GB install for Baldur’s Gate 3’s launch build, which cannot be preloaded. In a follow-up tweet explaining this (below), Larian told Early Access players to delete their save files and mods and do a fresh install. This is to reduce the risk of file conflicts when the final game downloads, and "should mean more playing, and no troubleshooting!" For many fans who are excited to jump straight into...
In a bid for the growing number of warfare-centric multiplayer games with massive numbers of combatants taking to the field all at once to impale one another, Warhaven hopes make a name for itself with large maps, an impressive roster of warriors, and objective matches that have armies scrambling to overrun one another in an elaborate game of tug-of-war. I recently spent several hours with the team at Nexon and some of my fellow IGN sweaty tryhards as we tried desperately to maim one another while slinging as much trash talk as humanly possible. The result was a few entertaining hours that were complete pandemonium from beginning to end. While combat may be slightly reminiscent of fellow third-person melee warfare game For Honor...
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is coming to even more consoles. But we're not talking about the Nintendo Switch, or some unannounced next-gen thing. Instead, Respawn is working on dedicated versions for last-gen systems, the Xbox One and PS4. Announced today during EA's earnings call, the publisher revealed that Respawn is "in the early stages of development" to bring Jedi: Survivor to PS4 and Xbox One. Of course, it's not abandoning the current-gen, either. "Additional performance improvements for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S remain a top priority at Respawn and the team will share more information as soon as the next update is ready," the publisher said in a statement. While many games are still developed with both generations...
FromSoftware composer Yuka Kitamura has left the company and is now pursuing freelance work. She's worked on games such Dark Souls III, Bloodborne, and Shadows Die Twice. Over on X (formerly known as Twitter), Kitamura said, “Thank you all for your continued support. Today I have an announcement to make. I have decided to leave FromSoftware, the company I worked for, and to start working new as a freelance composer in this August.” She continued, “I would like to continue to express myself in game music through various genres of music. I hope you will look forward to my music in the future! I have created a new website.” Her website notes that she specializes in orchestral, folk, and easygoing styles of music. Kitamura joined From...
Your favorite sorcerers from Jujutsu Kaisen are dropping into Fortnite. Epic Games released the teaser trailer for the latest anime collaboration on Fortnite's official X (formerly Twitter) account Tuesday. The trailer shows Yuji, Megumi, Gojo, and Nobara scaring away Banana Man and Fishsticks with the Ten Shadows Technique cast by Megumi to turn their juvenile shadow puppets into terrifying shikigami and breaking through the wall to introduce themselves to the Fortnite world. The teaser trailer for the Fortnite x Jujutsu Kaisen collaboration comes after leaks from dataminers unearthed images of bundle pages that showed skins of the characters (mainly Nobara, Megumi, and Gojo) and accessories inspired by the anime that would be...
Activision banned more than 14,000 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone cheaters in one day thanks to new exploit-checking techniques. As reported by VG247, a tweet from Call of Duty Updates on Twitter (below) revealed that Activison is using an anti-cheat technique that targets exploit developers at the source. This seemingly means that Activision can now trace a cheat from the top to everyone who's used it. "In the last 24 hours, new detections directly targeting cheat developers at the source has led to over 14,000 account bans for cheating and hacking in Modern Warfare II and Warzone," the tweet said. Cheaters and hackers have always been an issue in Call of Duty, with the classic Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 era games...
Behaviour Interactive is teasing a crossover between asymmetrical horror game Dead by Daylight and the sci-fi horror film franchise Alien. In a teaser trailer (below), the developer revealed it was teaming up with 20th Century Studios to bring the Alien franchise to Dead by Daylight. While not much was shared, Behaviour Interactive did confirm that more details would be shared on August 8. This is not the first time Behaviour Interactive has done a crossover for Dead by Daylight and a horror film franchise, as the developer previously introduced content from Saw, Hellraiser, and Ringu. The Alien reveal comes months after Behaviour Interactive announced Nicolas Cage is joining the game. Additionally, the studio said in May it was...

Larian Studios has revealed Baldur’s Gate 3 has an install size of 122 GB and that players can't preload any of it before the game's August 3 launch. “Baldur’s Gate 3 will launch on August 3 at 5pm Ghent time, or your non-Belgian time zone equivalent as shown above," read a community update posted to the RPG's Steam page. "There will be no pre-loading of the game before then.” The post also noted that early access save files would not be compatible with the full version of the game at launch, while reasoning that "so much has changed that it’s really worth it to start afresh.” As reported by PC Gamer, Larian Studios’ Swen Vincke said in July it would not be advantageous to have the early access version of the game installed, as...
The first time I walked into Volt Colosus’s boss room, I knew, I knew, I was gonna wipe the floor with him. It was only my first run in Battle Shapers, but I’d been going through his robotic minions like I was the IRS and they owed me money. I’d found a good weapon, my health and shields were near maximum, and I felt like a had a pretty good feel for the core I was rolling with. Volt Colossus would be tougher, sure, but this fight was gonna be over fast. Well, I was right about one thing: the fight was over fast. About five seconds after the fight started, I was respawning in my hideout with no idea how to avoid the attacks that killed me, but like the character I was playing, I was raring to go again. The second run would be different...
The people at Gunfire Games, makers of the recent looter-shooter soulslike Remnant 2, will be the first to tell you they’ve got a love for secrets. Rich Vorodi, one of the team’s principal game designers who focuses on quests, levels, and puzzles, gushed to IGN about the team’s obsession with hiding things in all their games. “We just love to put secrets in everything,” he said. “It allows us to stir up conversations amongst people we’ve never even met and just provide a little awe and mystery.” In some of their past projects, like 2019’s Remnant: From The Ashes, data mining sucked some of the mystery out of their game a little earlier than they’d have liked. It’s certainly not a new problem, but while Gunfire Games processed their...
Gearbox Publishing has announced that Remnant 2 has sold more than one million units in its first week across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. The three-person cooperative shooter launched on July 25 to high praise from players and critics, with the excitement around the long-awaited sequel clearly converting to sales too. "To everyone who helped us achieve this amazing milestone, thank you for your unwavering support," said Gunfire Games CEO David Adams. "This was a multi-year journey for us and we couldn’t be happier to see fans having such a great time with a game we put our heart and soul into." Gearbox Publishing San Francisco president Yoon Im added: "Remnant 2 exceeded our expectations. As a commercial and critical hit...
Well, just when you thought that PlayStation VR2 bundle couldn't get any cheaper, Amazon goes harder. $190 off is so yesterday — saving $218 is what all the cool kids are doing now. Also, speaking of VR savings, I've spotted a nice little bargain on the Meta Quest 2 unit as well. In historical news, it's now been 29 years since the Atari Jaguar landed on our sunny shores. Being a fifth-gen console, it was largely up against Saturn and PlayStation but had to be euthanised a mere two years into its life. Why? Because it was rocking a calculator-esque controller, lacked a quality library (beyond the lure of its Alien vs Predator exclusive), and cost upwards of 600-700 dollarydoos. FYI: that's about $1,350 in 2023 adjusted dollarydoos...
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, Team Reptile's upcoming action-adventure game heavily inspired by Jet Set Radio, is coming to Xbox and PlayStation on September 1 – two weeks after the game releases on PC and Nintendo Switch. Bomb Rush Cyberfunk was announced back in 2020 by Team Reptile with confirmation that the game would release on Steam and the Nintendo Switch. The game will have players traverse around the in-game world, spraying graffiti and using boostpacks to reach new heights. More interestingly, when the game was first revealed over three years ago, the developer also confirmed that Hideki Naganuma, the composer for Jet Set Radio and Jet Set Radio Future, would compose the music for the game. The game was originally supposed to...
The recent releases of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters have at last given a new audience the opportunity to play the original six Final Fantasy games on modern consoles. But while the games are currently available on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, Square Enix would really love to get them working on a third platform, and no, I'm not talking about the Xbox. I'm talking about Final Fantasy 14. Speaking at a press conference at Final Fantasy Fan Fest 2023, director and producer Naoki Yoshida (known as Yoshi-P) said that he's been interested for some time in the idea of FF14 players being able to play the Pixel Remasters either through the Gold Saucer amusement park in game, or through player housing. However, the feature has proven...
Bandai Namco has issued a stark warning to Tekken 8 players, insisting they do not continue to play the recently-released closed network test. The latest Tekken 8 closed network test ran on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC over the weekend, and let players get hands-on with the upcoming fighting game ahead of launch. Predictably, this closed network test was cracked, and it didn’t take long for users to continue to play the build beyond the closed network test period. In a tweet, Bandai Namco said doing so breaches its terms of service, as well as the Tekken World Tour code of conduct. The unauthorized download or distribution of the game is “illegal”, Bandai Namco insisted, before threatening to ban anyone caught playing...
It’s ‘90s week here at IGN and we are celebrating all the wonderful things that made this special decade one to remember. Movies and TV obviously had their standouts, but the ‘90s also saw the release of some of the most important video games and consoles of all time. With key moments, like the epic battle between Nintendo and Sega to the arrival of 3D games like Super Mario 64 and Final Fantasy VII that changed how we played forever, it’s hard to overstate the importance of those 10 years. However, which game was the best of the best? We can’t possibly hope to answer this question alone without your help. Do you think Super Mario World deserves the top spot? How about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time or Metal Gear Solid? We’ve...
Like other FromSoftware action RPGs, Elden Ring is notorious for its brutal difficulty, with a no-damage run that is not impossible but a challenging feat to accomplish. But one Twitch streamer managed to conquer this challenge with an unconventional controller: an electric saxophone. Streamer DrDeComposing broadcasted himself taking less than 2.5 hours to beat Elden Ring without taking any damage. DrDeComposing touts himself as the first to complete a no-hit run of Elden Ring using a nontraditional controller, noting his previous personal best using the electric saxophone to play Elden Ring was no deaths and only one hit. What's even more interesting is this is not DrDeComposing's first attempt at using an electric saxophone as a...
While the 1970s were important for the invention of video games and important modern blockbusters like Star Wars, and the 1980s were significant for establishing gaming as a worldwide phenomenon thanks to Nintendo, the 1990s were when things got really interesting across pop culture. Throughout the decade we saw the foundations laid for many of the conventions we take for granted today, and the building blocks of modern 3D gaming, blockbuster movies, and binge-worthy television were established and refined. Over the next week, we’ll have stories and videos every day that explore all of this. Not only did we get the PlayStation, SNES, Super Mario 64, Resident Evil, Half-Life, Quake, and Pokémon in the 90s, but we also got The X-Files...
It was September 10, 1999 – the day after the Sega Dreamcast’s US launch. West Coast rapper Del the Funky Homosapien had just finished a gaming-tinged set at a San Francisco club ("Marvel Vs Capcom, beyond fathom // Tell the truth, Playstation ain't ready to have ‘em") and now Peter Moore, Sega of America’s senior vice president of marketing, stood on stage, ready to reveal the console’s day-one sales figures to the world. He lifted paper flaps covering each digit, one by one. The crowd got louder as the millions stacked up. It roared as he flicked the last flap aside to show a total of nearly $98 million in sales. He declared it the “biggest launch in entertainment history” – and, crucially, bigger than the US launches of the...
IO Interactive has announced a brand new Elusive Target for Hitman: World of Assassination, due out later in 2023. The Drop, Hitman: World of Assassination’s first new Elusive Target mission for two years, features the likeness and voiceover of real-life DJ and actor Dimitri Vegas, and launches free on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Vegas plays the titular The Drop, “a DJ-turned-drug impresario bent on controlling the scene one way or another”. IO didn’t say where the mission is set, but a Berlin nightclub sounds plausible. In Hitman: World of Assassination, Elusive Targets are unique, high-stakes contracts only available for a limited time. These missions are free for all...
