Epic Games Chief Creative Officer Donald Mustard, one of the key architects behind Fortnite’s massive success, is retiring this month. Mustard announced the news today on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), writing that he’s “excited to spend time with my wife and family and am forever grateful for [Epic Games CEO] @timsweeney and the Epic Games family.” You can read his full statement below. In 2005, Mustard founded Salt Lake City-based studio Chair Entertainment, which released its first game, Undertow, for Xbox 360’s Live Arcade service in 2007. Chair was acquired by Epic Games in 2008 and there, Mustard would direct beloved 2009 Metroidvania Shadow Complex (today’s news might be a little deflating for those still...
While playing through Starfield's 19 Main Missions you'll unlock some cool things, but one set of very cool things is a game changer. We will spoil it below for those who are OK with that sort of thing, but suffice it to say: We highly recommend playing through a specific amount of the Main Missions to unlock a very cool thing that you'll want to use in the remaining Main Missions, Side Missions, faction quests, and basically every opportunity — and it's something that, if you get it early, it gets even better the more you play. This tip is so good. For real. We wish someone would have told us this before we started playing. Which Main Missions to Mainline Intrigued? OK, here's the spoiler free version: Simply unlock and beat the...
Baldur's Gate 3 recently launched on PS5. Like the PC version, it includes support for split-screen, allowing PS5 owners to play with their friends who are playing Larian Studios' critically acclaimed RPG on PC. But while split-screen mostly works fine, IGN has nevertheless encountered some issues. We discuss these issues in our new performance review of Baldur's Gate 3, where we compare the PS5 and PC versions of the game. Reviewer Michael Thompson says that the game's performance tanks when two characters explore different parts of a city, with the frames per second fluctuating while conducting the test in Act 3. He notes that the CPU is being taxed while doing this work and not the GPU. Thompson reports an average of 27.3 frames...
Roblox Corporation announced today that its popular game platform will be coming to PlayStation consoles next month. At the 2023 Roblox Developers Conference (RDC), the company confirmed that both PS4 and PS5 versions of Roblox will be available starting in October. Roblox is already available on Xbox, in addition to PC, Mac, iOS, and Android, with a Meta Quest version receiving a broader launch sometime this month. The press release from Roblox Corporation notes that PS4 and PS5 owners can anticipate access to "the full catalog of Roblox experiences," implying that users playing Roblox on another platform can log into their account and pick up where they left off. Roblox was originally released in 2006 and has become a juggernaut...
After sharing a sneak peek during a recent episode of Hot Ones featuring Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon, Netherrealm Studios has released a new trailer today spotlighting the Jean-Claude Van Damme skin in Mortal Kombat 1. The new trailer shows off Van Damme fighting a few characters, including Johnny Cage, the former being an alternative skin for the Mortal Kombat veteran that can only be unlocked if you purchase Premium/Kollector's editions of the game. The costume the Van Damme skin wears even resembles the outfit worn in the 1988 film Bloodsport. Van Damme becoming a playable character in the next installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise comes full circle as the character, dating back to the original Mortal Kombat game, when...
In Home Sweet Home : Online by Yggdrazil Group, you have to do what you can to hang onto your humanity–until the rules change on a dime, and you become the hunter who stalks the darkness for fresh blood. Four players then struggle to survive against the beast's onslaught. It's a familiar gameplay scenario, but there's a big difference with Home Sweet Home : Online's structure: It does away with the imbalance issues and clogged lobbies that plague other "massive monster versus tiny hunters" 4v1 games. There's no delay, and easier matchmaking. Home Sweet Home : Online's mechanics guarantee that everyone is playing by the same rule set, so you always have a shot at coming out on top. Everyone starts every match on the same footing, but...
Starfield players have already made some incredibly useful mods, like a fix for the frustrating inventory system or the addition of DLSS support, but they've also added some very silly things like hairy chests, colourful juice boxes, and the lasagne loving cat Garfield. That's not to say the creators of these mods aren't looking to provide a service and more options for players, of course. The Hairy Chest for Men of Starfield mod by kosmos84 comes with two options to suit different needs, for example: Normal and Furball. Another from KaySato upgrades the bland juice boxes of Starfield: "This mod adds unique textures for the boring grey drink packs, giving more variety and immersion." Other players have created similar mods to spice...

In late 2001, the dot-com crash struck ZeniMax, and a team of thirty-some developers in the company’s basement feared for their jobs. They were late delivering their new role-playing game, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, to Microsoft; their board of directors had begun having doubts about the whole videogame enterprise. People were pulling seven-day workweeks on something none of them were sure would ever see the light of day. Morale was in the toilet. When project leader Todd Howard called an off-site meeting, mere months ahead of launch, most of his crew thought they were being laid off. In fact, it was to be the most important moment in the studio’s history. Howard had sent out emails to everyone on his team days earlier, asking...
The creator of viral Steam hit Only Up! has pulled the game from the storefront, citing “stress”. Only Up! is a rock-hard physics-based platformer that went viral in May after high-profile streamers and YouTubers showcased their often futile attempts to make it to the top. In an update on Steam spotted by PCGamesN, Only Up!’s creator described themselves as a solo developer, and said the unexpected hit was their first experience of video game development. Only Up! is “a game I did for creativity, to test myself, and where I made a lot of mistakes” they admitted. “The game has kept me under a lot of stress all these months. Now I want to put the game behind me.” The developer, who published Only Up! on Steam under the name SCKR...
A Japanese man has been sentenced to two years in prison and fined ¥1 million (around $6,785) after monetising gameplay videos on YouTube. As reported by Japanese outlet Asahi Shimbun (translated by The Verge and verified by IGN), 53-year-old Shinobu Yoshida was convicted for violating copyright law after uploading the videos without publisher permission. This is the first conviction of its kind in Japan, according to Asahi Shimbun. Yoshida uploaded gameplay videos of visual novel Steins;Gate: My Darling’s Embrace and other videos summarising episodes of the Steins;Gate and Spy x Family anime shows. Monetising the videos, meaning to earn revenue from them, is what violated a Japanese law that prohibits making money from copyrighted...
Starfield players have already built ships based on famous craft from across science fiction, but this player did something else entirely — and may have created the most overpowered ship possible. Redditor Solace_of_the_Thorns worked out enemy ships target your ship’s midpoint, which is calculated by taking the distance the farthest two point on the X, Y, and Z axis intersect. Solace_of_the_Thorns wondered, what would happen if the AI shot at a ship without a midpoint? The answer is the “Fat L”, or the "L-Wing". The L-Wing is “effectively immune” to frontal damage, Solace_of_the_Thorns said, because the ship’s midpoint is above and to the left of the ship. That is to say, the L-Wing has an offset midpoint not within the ship, but...
Baldur’s Gate 3 launched on PlayStation 5 this week following its PC release in August, and the tech experts at Digital Foundry have delivered their verdict. According to Digital Foundry, Larian’s sprawling Dungeons & Dragons-themed role-playing game is an impressive port on PS5, and runs at a level equivalent to the PC version on ultra settings, the highest set of options available. As Digital Foundry pointed out, this isn't typical of most console games. The PS5 version lets you turn performance mode on or off. Both result in a 1440p resolution. Performance mode targets 60 frames per second and, according to Digital Foundry, for the most part the game hits that. As is the case with the PC version, in the PS5 version the city of...
Microsoft has announced an Xbox Digital Broadcast for Tokyo Game Show. The broadcast is set for 2am PT / 5am ET / 10am UK / 6pm JST, and will share progress on games from Xbox and Bethesda, showcase games from creators mainly from Japan and Asia, and make announcements of new games coming to Game Pass. “Players can expect to hear progress updates from Xbox and Bethesda Softworks and see a creatively diverse collection of games from creators predominantly located in Japan and across Asia,” Xbox chief marketing officer Jerret West said in a post on Xbox Wire. “We’ll also share exciting new games coming to Xbox Game Pass, which continues to grow with great content from teams all around Asia.” At Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest 2023, game...
Starfield offers you the option to choose three traits to build your character's identity beyond their background skills. Your playstyle preferences will define what you'll ultimately want to pick for a background (you can pick up any of the skills that come with the backgrounds later, though some characters will rarely refer to your background in conversations), but since traits can't be added after you've begun your game you'll want to choose those wisely. Here are our team's favorites: Kid Stuff - Get free stuff from your parents! Well, you're technically paying them every week, but there's no way the amount you give them would add up to the cost of what they give you. The weapons and other items they offer early on are helpful and...
Making money, or credits, in Starfield can take a lot of time if you don't take advantage of some of Starfield's more disreputable activities. The easiest of these is finding and selling contraband. As far as we've seen possession of these yellow-marked items has no impact on companion relationships, and unless it's a UC or Freestar Collective scanner, no one really cares if you have it. Contraband are illicit items like harvested organs found in enemy buildings and ships and locked up in security stations. Upon entering the space around major settled systems locations the local security will scan your ship upon entry in search of contraband. The only way to hide it is by having shielded cargo or by fast-traveling out of the area in...

Ed Boon, the co-creator of Mortal Kombat, brought the heat on a Sept. 7 episode of Hot Ones during a conversation about Mortal Kombat 1, showing off the first look at Johnny Cage's Jean-Claude Van Damme skin. It marks a rare appearance for a video game personality on the hit YouTube series, which mostly features film, TV, and music celebrities as they attempt to eat wings that gradually get spicier while making it through an interview. Boon did the same, and he and Hot Ones host Sean Evans had plenty to talk about in regards to Mortal Kombat 1. One new addition that's been decades in the making is the inclusion of Jean-Claude Van Damme in the form of a Johnny Cage skin, which will be available for players who purchase the...
I have been playing Starfield for a few weeks now, and there is plenty of opportunity for customization, from the character creator tool to changing your clothing appearance and even customizing the outside of your ship. But today I learned that you can also design the interior of your ship's console by adding items on there as decor. Reddit user, Fabulous_Hedgehog839 posted a video on r/Starfield where he shared this helpful tip: you can place items like a plushie onto your ship's console. It's akin to having decorations like an ornament for your car dashboard. Cute and charming, especially if you are in first-person mode while flying your spaceship. Of course, the items will disappear if you change your primary ship or edit the...
While bugs in new games are far from uncommon, Bethesda Game Studios has a certain reputation for them - especially for those that happen to be both harmless and hilarious (there are more than a few compilations of the funniest Skyrim bugs out there). Starfield, while being less buggy than other Bethesda releases, most certainly still has a few, and a lot of them are predictably absurd. Users on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and the Starfield subreddit have been posting all about the funny bugs and glitches they have encountered as they venture across the Settled Systems. Some on Reddit have reported, for example, watching NPCs missing half their bodies while standing in their ship; some see characters randomly floating...
Madden has a bug problem, and despite a patch that addressed several stability issues in late August and another that released on September 1st, there’s still a lot wrong with EA’s football sim – and some of it stems from last year’s release. The biggest problems seem to be found in Franchise mode, which has been something of a sore spot among the Madden faithful. Franchise has long lagged behind similar modes in other sports sims. At the moment, Madden fans are most vocal about Franchise’s draft class bug. This bug only seems to affect players importing or downloading draft classes. Generic draft classes don’t have this problem, but it seems to affect every imported or downloaded draft class after a certain point. What happens...
If you're playing Starfield on PC — specifically via the Microsoft Store or through PC Game Pass — it's important to note you might run into some issues if you intend to mod one of those versions. Several users on Steam, NexusMods, and Reddit have pointed out the issues with the Microsoft Store and Game Pass versions of Starfield. The problem is that the Script Extender mod or more complex mods that require Script Extender to be installed won't work, though basic mods work just fine on those versions. The modder who created the Starfield Script Extender mod, ianpatt, pointed out in the comments that it would not work on the Game Pass Version or the Microsoft Store. "No, you can't just jam the DLL in to the Game Pass version and...
PAX West was back in full force in 2023. As one of North America's largest video game shows, the popular fan convention allows the gaming audience to sample some of the next big games, and smaller surprises, set for release this Fall and in 2024. With other adjacent events happening during PAX West 2023, such as Nintendo Live and The Mix's Media Indie Exchange, the offerings this year featured a wide breadth of pulse-pounding action games and other titles that went for a more cozy and chill vibe to help set a different mood. In this roundup of cool games, we're spotlighting some of the most exciting and eye-grabbing games we saw during PAX West 2023 and other adjacent events. Square Enix has "no plans" to make Final Fantasy 14 free to play even though a lot of the game already is. Speaking to Eurogamer, director Naoki Yoshida made clear the game will continue to require a monthly subscription for the time being. That being said, Square Enix is also likely to continue expanding the already lengthy free trial. "I believe the free trial will continue to be expanded, but we have no plans of making the client itself free at the moment," Yoshida said. "Since a huge amount of time and money has been invested in the expansion packages, the revenue from sales of the expansion package itself is still very important in order to continue to make expansions [like Dawntrail] on this scale. We would like to constantly...
Starfield players are a creative bunch, and when they're not filling spaceships full of potatoes or building New Atlantis in Lego, they're using the robust character creator to recreate a bunch of famous faces. These include Willem Dafoe, David Bowie, somehow more than one character from Shrek, and many more, with players taking to social media to share their creations. You can view them all in the slideshow below. "You know, I'm something of an industrialist myself," reads a post from strider390 on Reddit, who posted a screenshot of his Industrialist Willem Dafoe-looking character while referencing the classic Spider-Man meme. SoullessVoid created Starman himself, David Bowie, while CheesyWales made one of the creators of Starfield...
Warning: Full Spoilers for Starfield follow I’ve already hit Starfield’s credits screen four times. Not because I can’t get enough of playing Bethesda’s latest grand-scale RPG, but because I find the concept that powers its new game plus mode to be completely intriguing. Not to sound too much like Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar, but where I once thought I’d be losing dozens of hours exploring places in this galaxy, it’s actually what takes place in one room that has captured my imagination most. I should probably first explain what exactly happens at the end of Starfield’s story and the beginning of a new game plus run. In the final moments of the main questline, you become a Starborn, a sort of guardian of the galaxy whose job...
Starfield is officially out, and modders have been working hard creating helpful add-ons, from useful, quality-of-life mods such as revamping the inventory UI to unofficially adding support for DLSS. Others have added more cosmetic things like reskin in-game clothes. And then there are some people out there who keep modding Bethesda's Todd Howard into the game. Several individuals have posted mods on NexusMods, replacing miscellaneous things with Todd Howard's face. One mod by ronaldmoon, for example, replaces every single portrait in the Constellation Lodge with a picture of Todd Howard. ScarClaw72's mod replaces the Starfield logo and splash screen with pictures of Howard. While GeraldMods replaces the flashlight texture with a...
Starfield hasn't been out a week yet but players have already discovered an infinite money exploit that's very similar to that in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. As reported by PC Gamer, YouTuber vNivara uploaded a video showing how players can access infinite amounts of credits by breaking into shop vendors' secret stashes, stealing all their wares, and then selling them back. This works the same as the main infinite money exploit in Skyrim, but is perhaps more likely to get patched out as it involves falling through the map instead of finding a sneaky stash under some rocks in Dawnstar. Players will need to prepare a little before accessing this area by obtaining the Power Boostpack mod and reaching Rank 2 in the Boost Pack Training...
