Ten years ago, EA unwisely attempted to reboot its NBA Live basketball franchise, which was then coming off one of its most successful entries to date. The result was NBA Elite, an entry so bad that it effectively killed the franchise while wholly ceding the video game basketball market to NBA 2K. At the time, NBA 2K was a critically acclaimed basketball sim — NBA 2K11 is often called one of the finest sports games ever made — but it didn't take long for the lack of competition to have an effect on the franchise. These days, NBA 2K22's positives are buried beneath an avalanche of product placements and microtransactions. With no competition, 2K has little incentive to change its ways, even as fans take to sites like Metacritic to...
Like a flashlight flickering to life from a freshly inserted set of Energizers, Alan Wake Remastered takes the 11-year-old survival horror shooter and presents it in its most radiant form. Yet while the details in its moody environments are now far easier to make out, its gameplay shortcomings are presented in equally stark relief. Alan Wake Remastered’s twisted brand of psychological torture by torchlight still makes for a supremely tense trip through the woods, but as a shooter it’s stuck in the past compared to more modern games – including developer Remedy’s own Control. If you missed it the first time around, Alan Wake Remastered’s story remains a novel one in every sense of the word. When crime fiction author Wake’s wife goes...
Amazon Games' New World has begun preventing players from creating new characters in full servers as it continues its efforts to bring queue times down for the hugely popular game. In an update on Twitter, the MMO developer announced that it has created a new system to help it better manage server capacity going forward. "Whenever a server is full, the server will be greyed out with the messaging 'Character Creation is temporarily disabled on this server to prevent overpopulation'," says Amazon Games. While the change means that new players to the game will be limited in terms of the severs that they can join, the studio went on to confirm that the system will not affect pre-existing characters within a server, who will be able to...
Illfonic, the developer behind Friday the 13th and Predator: Hunting Grounds, is working on a Ghostbusters game. As pointed out by ResetEra user chairhome, Illfonic studio co-founder Raphael Saadiq casually revealed the title in a recent interview on the music podcast Questlove Supreme. Saadiq let slip news that the company is working on a Ghostbusters tie-in after being asked how many games the studio currently has out. "Friday the 13th [is] the last one and Predator and we're working on Ghostbusters right now," Saadiq says before quickly moving on to talk about the studio's most recent project, Arcadegeddon, which is currently available in early access and out in 2022. Saadiq didn't return to the topic of Ghostbusters for the...
Ubisoft has confirmed a long-held fan theory about the villain of Far Cry 2, the Jackal, and how he connects to the original Far Cry story. “The Jackal is actually supposed to be Jack Carver from the original Far Cry,” said Clint Hocking, Far Cry 2's Creative Director, while talking to IGN for the latest Inside Stories documentary, How Far Cry's Iconic Villains Were Created. “Jack Carver in the original Far Cry was this shifty, smuggler, gun runner kind of crook,” Hocking explained. “The idea was [the Jackal] is just him, 10 years later or something, after he's seen whatever he saw on this island [during the events of Far Cry]. Maybe it was drug induced, maybe it's post-traumatic stress disorder, or maybe it's real. But the idea is...
Alongside Xbox reiterating its commitment to making games more accessible for the "estimated more than 400 million gamers with disabilities across the globe," 343 Industries has given a sneak peek at some of the accessibility features coming to Halo Infinite. These updates and many more were part of Microsoft's Xbox Accessibility Showcase, and 343 Industries' Paige Johnson stopped by to share some of the accessible and customizable features that will be part of Halo Infinite when it is released on December 8, 2021. The team's goal was to "make the newest journey into the Halo universe more accessible to as many gamers as possible." This includes veterans of the series and those who "struggled to play due to barriers that hadn't...
Due to the rising COVID-19 rates in Romania, Valve has made the decision to cancel the in-person event for Dota 2's The International 2021 tournament and will instead host a digital-only event. Valve shared the news in a blog, confirming that all ticket sales will be refunded for those who were planning on attending the event in person. "We have been carefully evaluating the continued rise of Covid rates in Romania, as well as the resulting introduction of new local restrictions in Bucharest," Valve wrote. "To ensure the safety of all players, talent, and production staff participating in the event, we have decided to refund all ticket sales for The International 2021. "We wanted nothing more than to welcome fans live to the event...
Fighting game tournament ARCREVO is coming back and will be headlined by Guilty Gear Strive, the latest title in the long-running Guilty Gear series. Riku Ozawa from Arc System Works revealed the news about the fighting game tournament during the company’s special program during Tokyo Game Show 2021 on Sunday. The event will be held in three general regions — North America; Japan and Korea; and Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) — though no specific cities were announced. Qualifying in North America begins December 11 and the finals will be held on March 19, 2022. The event will be held online in February of next year in the Japan and Korea region, while qualifying for the EMEA region begins this month, with the finals...
If there’s one thing everyone remembers about Far Cry it's the villains. Characters like Vaas, Pagan Min, and Joseph Seed have all easily earned their place in the bad guy hall of fame. Over time, the role of the villain in Far Cry has become increasingly important to the series’ identity, so much so that in the latest installment – Far Cry 6 – the antagonist is played by one of the most recognisable villain actors of all time: Giancarlo Esposito. The journey to this high point has been the result of wild audition tapes, ambitious writing, dedicated performances, and an E3 demo that miraculously turned a cut character into Far Cry’s iconic bad guy that started it all. This is the inside story of the evolution of Far Cry’s villains...
The development team behind Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin have been taking player feedback to heart as they work to improve the game ahead of its release next year – in ways even they didn’t expect. After hearing all the speculation from fans about the identity of Chaos following the initial demo that was released in the summer, the developers — a collaboration of minds from Square Enix and Team Ninja — went ahead and included his name (Jack Garland, i.e. the name of the main character) in the new trailer that was shown during Tokyo Game Show 2021. “The protagonist is Garland, and I’d had in mind for a while that one day, I’d like to tell the story of how Garland turns into Chaos,” producer Tetsuya Nomura said during a...
Get your bubbling cauldrons ready for winter as Koei Tecmo will release Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream in North America on February 25, 2022 for PlayStation 4, Steam, and Nintendo Switch. This new entry in the Atelier series (which celebrates its 25th anniversary next year) is a sequel to Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book, first released in Japan in 2015 but more recently ported to the Nintendo Switch. You can check out an exclusive look at the introduction to the game below: In her first adventure, young alchemist Sophie Neuenmuller ran her own business in the town of Kirchen Bell but struggled with her craft. She discovered a floating, talking book of alchemic recipes named Plactha...
There is always something exciting about playing a brand new JRPG that isn’t from one of the popular franchises we already know and love, mostly to see how it differentiates itself from the pack. But while Astria Ascending’s turn-based combat is excellent, its mediocre story and weak quest design drag it down. It has plenty of amusing things going for it, but those shortcomings keep it from becoming the breakout JRPG it had the potential to be. Astria Ascending puts a side-scrolling twist on a more traditional, turn-based RPG shell. You’ll explore its world of Orchanon as a 2D platformer, entering separate rooms, collecting treasures, and encountering enemies as you travel across the screen. But while its presentation is novel, its...
Paradox Interactive has stopped development on multiple unannounced games in an effort to put more resources into safer bets for the company's profits. The publisher announced the cancellations in a press release on Thursday. Paradox says they are still working on 15 new games including Victoria 3, Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines 2, Crusader Kings 3 on consoles, and the Shadowrun Trilogy on consoles. Paradox is also working on many new DLCs. Paradox CEO Fredrik Wester says the company is focusing more on the company's reputation for strategy games and making games last long after launch. "Paradox Interactive was born and raised in strategy and management games," Wester said in a press release. "It is where we have our heart...
Dungeon Encounters is directed by Hiroyuki Ito, involved in the creation of titles including Final Fantasy IV, V, XII, and Tactics. I started sweating a little bit as I began playing because not only is he well known for his work designing battle systems, but I was told that it was first and foremost about its systems, so naturally, I prepared myself to have to take a lot on board. Some of you may also be interested to know that Cattle Call, known for the Metal Max series and The Legend of Legacy, handled its development. Not a game with lush visuals and effects or a deep, engrossing story, but a turn-based, numbers-focused, bare-bones RPG of sorts. IGN Japan had the opportunity to try it out before release, so here are our initial...
As IGN celebrates its 25th anniversary, we’re updating our previous Top N64 Games list, originally written more than 21 years ago, to celebrate the N64 games that have left the biggest mark not just on our lives, but on the industry as a whole. As always with any kind of list like this, it’s important to establish our criteria to explain as best as we can why some games made the list and others didn’t. First, while we didn't have a hard rule on only including games that were exclusive to the Nintendo 64, we also didn’t want to include games that are just simply better on other platforms of that era, like Resident Evil 2 and Rayman 2. Second, we tried to consider a number of factors, including historical significance, how good it...

Square Enix has revealed a new "dungeon exploration RPG" called Dungeon Encounters, and announced it will be released in just two weeks on October 14, for PlayStation 4, Steam, and Nintendo Switch. During a special video presentation at Tokyo Game Show 2021, Square Enix producer Hiroaki Kato and director Hiroyuki Ito revealed a game that does not resemble the JRPG format which Square Enix helped make famous worldwide. Players march along a narrow grid, as if they are exploring a dungeon map rather than the dungeon itself. On-screen counters indicate players' coordinates in the dungeon, as well as how many squares they have uncovered. Exploring a complete floor unlocks the next one and grants the character additional "ability points."...

The studio apologized to its fans before stating that it is committed to fixing the game. In a tweet to the official eFootball Twitter account, Konami published an official statement surrounding the game during which it acknowledged reports from fans citing issues with a number of areas within the game. "After the release of eFootball 2022, we have received lots of feedback and requests regarding game balance that includes pass speed and defence operation," reads the statement. "We would also like to acknowledge that there have been reports of problems users have experienced with cut-scenes, facial expressions...

The team behind upcoming open world RPG Forspoken has discussed a number of details about the game, including its spells, antagonists, and 'magic parkour'. During an extended special showcase as part of Tokyo Game Show 2021, co-director Takefumi Terada and creative producer Raio Mitsuno shed a little more light on the game. Forspoken centers around the main character Frey, a young woman who falls through a portal and ends up in the strange land of Athia, and the adventures she embarks on in order to get home. As already seen in trailers for the game, Frey can wield magic, and Terada mentioned that her learning to use magical abilities is a big part of the story. As you'd expect after seeing the trailers, magic will also be central to...
Since its launch on Tuesday, Amazon's MMORPG New World has seen quite literally overwhelming popularity. Despite having doubled server numbers since release, the publisher is now asking for new fans logging into the game for the first time to find and join low-capacity servers in the game while it looks to cut down on huge queue times. As shared in an update on Twitter (below), the development team spoke further about how players could avoid New World's existing queue times – primarily, that's done by choosing to become part of less popular server, rather than jumping into an already-packed world and waiting to get in. "Our team has been working around the clock to add as many servers as we can and will continue to do so until we...
Konami is reportedly working on games in the Metal Gear, Castlevania, and Silent Hill series, with both internal and external studios attached. Anonymous publishing sources told VGC that Konami is refocusing on developing games within its best-loved series. Per those same sources, the first of those games will be a "reimagining" of Castlevania being developed primarily by internal Konami studios. The report adds that Konami is planning remasters of the original Metal Gear Solid games for new consoles, as well as a potential full remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Many have speculated that remake specialist Bluepoint would work on an MGS remake, but VGC's sources say it is being handled by a studio in Singapore. This is backed...
Veteran voice actor Hiroki Yasumoto kicked off Square Enix’s Tokyo Game Show presentation by reiterating that there would be no new news about Final Fantasy 16 – but went onto show off plenty of other trailers, and even a new RPG which is out in just two weeks. To ensure sure you don't miss anything, we've included all the big news from the showcase (which you can watch below): Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin Gets Release Date and Demo A new demo is coming today for the Final Fantasy spin-off being developed by Team Ninja. The demo builds off feedback from the trial released earlier this year and will feature both a new stage and give players a chance to try out the game’s multiplayer elements. There was an action-packed...
Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin – the action-focused Final Fantasy 1 spin-off – will be released on March 18, 2022. Announced during Tokyo Game Show 2021, the new release date was released as part of a new story trailer (below) that seemingly confirmed that the game's main character, Jack is related in some way to Final Fantasy 1's anatagonist, Garland. The game will also get a second demo that will include multiplayer features. Available only on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, the demo is arriving today. It will add a new stage not seen in the last demo, and includes updates made based on player feedback from the first. This demo will also include a survey, which Square Enix wants to make further changes based on. Announced...
If you’re able to look past all of the chaos memes – which I know might be a tall order – Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins is actually shaping up to be a very promising looking action/soulslike spin on the Final Fantasy franchise. I thought this back when I played the first demo back in June, and after playing through a second demo that is now publicly available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, I’m even more intrigued by its inventive combat that combines the typical Team Ninja style of fast and smooth, reflex driven action, with a JRPG job system and other quintessential Final Fantasy tropes. For those that didn’t get a chance to check out the first limited time demo, Stranger of Paradise is a loot driven...
The first extended gameplay footage of Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising – an action RPG spin-off of the upcoming Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes – has been revealed. During a special video presentation from publisher 505 Games at Tokyo Game Show 2021, Yoshitaka Murayama and Junko Kawano introduced a trio of playable heroes: JB, Isha, and Garoo. JB is an athletic young girl, Isha is a magic-wielder, and Garoo is, well, an anthropomorphic kangaroo (complete with a pouch on his shirt). In the story, these three meet in a village called "New Never" and they go underground exploring ancient ruins recently uncovered by an earthquake. The heroes seek both treasure and anyone who might be trapped underground. Gameplay is 2.5D and fast-paced...
