CD Projekt Red has offered fans a brief look at how the Witcher 3 will run on Steam Deck, using a number of short clips to show off various aspects of the game running on the new handheld. Showcased in a series of tweets posted on the Witcher 3 Twitter account, fans will be pleased to see that the Witcher 3 appears to run smoothly on Valve's upcoming handheld PC. The clips shared by CD Projekt Red detail a range of scenarios including general exploration and combat. Shot on an external camera and with Twitter video compression, it's difficult to tell exactly what resolution the game is running at, but fans on Twitter are impressed with how the game is looking on the handheld's native 800p screen. From what has been shown by CD...
Buckle up, because it's gonna be a big day of gaming tomorrow. If you're hoping to be a guerrilla in the (red) mist, you'll be able to go buy Far Cry 6. Samus fans can see how puzzle-platforming is really done in Metroid Dread. Oh, and the fancy new OLED Switch refresh will be hitting shelves and destroying wallets as well. That being said, I've found the best prices for all of the above (plus my usual selection of random must-owns). Gearbox Software has announced that former chief technology officer Steve Jones will now serve as the new president of Gearbox Software following a leadership shuffle. Gearbox Entertainment co-founder Randy Pitchford will still serve as CEO and President of the Gearbox parent company and shift his focus towards film and TV as the president of the newly-formed Gearbox Studios. Was that confusing? Well, buckle up. Basically, the video game development wing of Gearbox responsible for games like Borderlands will now be run by Jones. Meanwhile, Gearbox’s parent company, Gearbox Entertainment (which was acquired by the Embracer Group earlier this year) will still be overseen by Pitchford. Furthermore, Pitchford will serve as president of...
Valve has uploaded an official teardown of its Steam Deck, two months before the portable gaming console is released. The roughly five-minute video is a walkthrough on how to not only open up the Steam Deck but how to replace the thumbsticks and SSD included with the handheld. Despite being an official demo, Valve issues a warning at the beginning noting that, while they cannot stop you from doing so, it is strongly advising you not to open up the Steam Deck for any reason. The main reason Valve is strongly advising you not to pry the Steam Deck open is due to the console's battery — should you puncture the battery while opening it up, there's a chance the battery may catch on fire. Noting that if you damage the battery, the Steam...
Big Ant Studios and Nacon have officially revealed Cricket 22, which will see the series debut on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and introduce a number of important new licensed competitions and teams. Following on from 2019’s successful and extensively-supported Cricket 19, Big Ant claims Cricket 22 will deliver “the most robust, substantial game of cricket that fans have ever seen.” Cricket 22 will feature Australia’s T20 Big Bash tournament alongside the Caribbean Premier League, England’s The Hundred, and The Ashes, and it will also include fully-licensed national teams for Australia, England, New Zealand, the West Indies, and Ireland. As with Cricket 19, the men’s and women’s games will be represented throughout all of...
It’s no secret that Grounded, Obsidian’s backyard survival game, is very different from anything the prolific RPG developer has made before -- something the developers themselves have poked fun at in the past. But while the microscopic multiplayer adventure has seen success in its own right, even while still in preview, the upcoming Hot and Hazy update seems poised to give many fans more of what they might expect from Obsidian: lots of stats. With everything from character stats that let you upgrade your avatar’s abilities, to weapon upgrades that increase deadliness, to new armor classes with gameplay consequences, Grounded will get a whole lot nerdier and RPG-like later this month. One of the biggest additions Hot and Hazy adds is a...
The Far Cry series has long experienced something of an identity crisis. Is it a hard–boiled story of survival, or a goofy physics playground with pet bears and flamethrowers? The answer has usually been “a bit of both,” and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Far Cry 6 doesn’t buck that trend – the flamethrower definitely hasn’t gone anywhere – but the latest installment does manage to smooth over a lot of the bumps that have cropped up in the past few games, and in doing so becomes the best the series has been in years – but it also misses some steps, especially with its updated inventory system, and that creates some new problems along the way. Far Cry 6 once again sees you trapped in a huge open world controlled by a charismatic...
Far Cry 4 famously included an Easter Egg ending that allowed you 'finish' the game right from the beginning. Far Cry 5 then repeated the trick and, as you might expect, Far Cry 6 is keeping up the tradition. Spoilers follow for the alternative ending to Far Cry 6. Stop reading if you'd like to find it yourself. Granted, Far Cry 6 does make you work a little harder than previous games to get to its own early ending. Where 4 and 5 placed their alternate endings just after the introduction, the latest installment requires you to play the game's early missions (it took us around an hour and a half) to get to a specific point in the storyline that will allow your character, Dani, to escape a naval blockade around the Yaran island...
Battlefield has always prioritized a certain degree of multiplayer insanity, but nothing in the series thus far prepared me for a mega-cyclone tearing across the map, wrecking cars, uprooting trees, and sucking up any poor souls who've gotten too close with their parachutes. Between the bullets, the gunships, and the artillery, we also have to watch out for this?Battlefield 2042 aims to take us into the near future, with a world on the brink and a cascading series of environmental catastrophes towering over the petty squabbles of mankind. After a few hours with the beta that’s about to open up, it is clear that DICE has gone absolutely giddy with excess — totally lapping the chaos it experimented with in its previous historical veneers...
Fair warning for the faint of heart: this deals list is positively haunted by Ghost Recon. To celebrate the announce of a GR-themed battle royale venture, Ubi has taken a tactical knife to the prices of current and classic entries in the franchise. Battlefield developer DICE has given us our first look at what Battlefield 2042 looks like on last-gen consoles. On Twitter, the official Battlefield account posted a picture of what the game will look like on Xbox's last-gen system. See for yourself below: It's good to see DICE being transparent with the last-gen versions of Battlefield 2042, especially after the state of Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 and Xbox One at launch left many players skeptical of last-gen versions. If you ae planning to play Battlefield 2042 on Xbox One or PlayStation 4, EA has announced that dual entitlement will only apply to the new-gen versions. This means even if you only have a last-gen console, you should still buy the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version to play...

Since time immemorial, Japanese video games have followed a typical release schedule. Launch in Japan first, followed by a localized release for other countries a few months, or even years, later. But this trend shifted dramatically in 2021. Many high-profile Japanese games such as Tales of Arise, Shin Megami Tensei V, and both Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Stories 2 have been launched day-and-date worldwide. So, what has changed? A simultaneous global ship date allows Japanese games to make a bigger, more immediate impact than ever before, which can create more lasting interest in not just a single game but its whole franchise. Seeking that impact comes at a cost, though -- challenges include implementing tighter workflows...
Ubisoft has announced Ghost Recon Frontline, a PvP first-person shooter that will be free-to-play. With support for over 100 players, it's an objective-focused spin on the incredibly popular battle royale genre. Public play testing will begin this month, but a full release date has yet to be announced. Ghost Recon Frontline’s flagship mode is Expedition, in which 102 players are divided up into teams of three to battle for victory on an island map. To win, a team must find and claim three pieces of intel, which will allow them to then head to a designated drop zone and extract from the map. When the extraction helicopter is called, though, other players are alerted and have the chance to attack and steal that team’s extraction in...
Even more evidence has emerged pointing towards the release of the long-rumored Grand Theft Auto trilogy remaster. @videotech_ on Twitter looked at the back end of the latest Rockstar Games Launcher update, and sure enough, they found slots for Grand Theft Auto III, San Andreas, and Vice City. This comes less than a week after Korea's Game Rating and Administration Committee released a rating for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition. A Kotaku report from August of this year originally said that the three classic GTA games would head to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC, Stadia, and mobile devices. The games will apparently feature a mix of "new and old graphics." Rockstar has yet to officially...

Despite this year’s many game delays — God of War Ragnarok, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Gotham Knights, and many others were pushed into next year — 2021 has thus far been a great year for video games. The first full year of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S era has brought us nearly 60 games (so far) that IGN awarded a review score of 8 or higher. As we enter the final quarter of the year, we've compiled a list of every such game — new, standalone releases (no DLC) that received an 8 ("Great”), 9 (“Amazing”), or 10 (“Masterpiece'') from IGN. Click through the gallery below or continue scrolling for our full list of 2021's 58 best games, ordered from lowest score to highest. Note: This list will be updated through the end of...
Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is out today, and there's hope that it might be a big hit in the competitive fighting game community. It's impossible to look at gameplay of the newest platform fighter starring the likes of SpongeBob, Nigel Thornberry, CatDog, and other Nicktoon stars without drawing deep parallels to Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. series. The Melee community is still highly active today, bringing CRT televisions to tournaments and playing Melee online through modified versions of the game. Despite Nintendo's tendency to shut down select Smash-related community events, the Melee fanbase has endured due to a deep love of the game. But in addition to their long-term love affair with Melee, many players in the Smash community...
EA has announced that players who purchase the standard digital edition of Battlefield 2042 will be able to upgrade from PS4 or Xbox One to new-gen PS5 or Xbox Series X/S versions free of charge. This is a u-turn on EA's previous stance, which required players to own the more expensive Gold Edition to be entitled to an upgrade. The standard digital edition of Battlefield 2042 now includes EA's 'dual entitlement' feature, meaning it comes with both generations of the game. So far, EA has only announced this feature for the digital version of Battlefield 2042, and so - at least currently - it appears that physical copies of the game will not include the dual entitlement new-gen upgrade. Prior to this change, dual entitlement was only...
Windows 11 is finally here. The latest operating system update from Microsoft left the Insider Program on Oct. 4 and is now available for anyone with a compatible PC to download and install. For those who aren't sure about whether their PC will run Windows 11, you can use the PC Health Check tool from Microsoft. The biggest changes you'll find in Windows 11 include a new Start menu that's now centered on your screen, along with widgets for glanceable news, weather, and other information of your choosing. There's a redesigned Settings app that is much easier to navigate, and new snap assist tools for arranging and managing your open apps. Microsoft also took another pass at the Microsoft Store and Xbox apps. Along with a new Xbox...
Fortnite is gearing up for another Halloween event with a spooky, “Fortnitemares” themed map and, of course, some new skins featuring original designs and collaboration with Universal’s monster movies. Starting today, players can jump into Halloween-themed maps, games, and experiences made by the community and featured in the Fortnitemares playlist menu. Halloween Outfits will also take over the store this month. Fortnite will be rolling out the outfit reveals throughout the month and a Fortnitemare card will flip over to reveal which new item is entering the store next. As part of the month’s festivities, Epic is teaming...
Nintendo has announced that the Kingdom Hearts games will be coming to Nintendo Switch. Revealed as part of Mr. Sakurai Presents, Smash Bros. series creator Masahiro Sakurai announced that the series will be available via cloud gaming, which will allow you to play the series up to and including Kingdom Hearts 3. The Switch versions will include Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts 3. While the Switch versions for these three games were announced, there is so far no release date. This will be the first time the mainline games will be available on Switch, although Kingdom Hearts has been on Nintendo's console already thanks to Melody of Memory. The Switch versions were...
There was something quite special about the original Oxenfree. Night School Studio’s walk-and-talk adventure game lets players uncover the mysteries of Edwards Island, fall for (or be sassy to) its ensemble cast of characters, and make plenty of dialogue choices along the way as things got creepier and creepier. Thanks to a hands-off preview session with Oxenfree 2, the sequel isn’t looking to break what isn’t broken. Instead, it seems the developers, nearly all of whom are back from the original, have found clever ways to deepen the base of Oxenfree’s world and spin it out into surprising new attempts to break our brains a little, and introduce some endearing new characters to boot. Oxenfree II is set in the same world as the...

Ethereum, the decentralized, open-source blockchain, appears to have arisen in part due to the creator "crying himself to sleep" over a nerf to the Syphon Life spell in World of Warcraft. As spotted by Polygon, Vitalik Buterin, the Canadian-Russian programmer credited with the development of Ethereum back in 2013, says that he first realised his concerns surrounding centralized services during his time playing World of Warcraft in the late 2000s. "I happily played World of Warcraft during 2007-2010, but one day Blizzard removed the damage component from my beloved warlock's Siphon Life spell," reads Buterin's about.me bio. "I cried myself to sleep, and on that day I realized what horrors centralized services can bring. I soon decided...

Sony has announced that The Last of Us Part 2, Fallout 76, Desperados III, Amnesia: Collection, FInal Fantasy VIII Remastered, Yet Another Zombie Defense, and Victor Vran: Overkill Edition are all joining PlayStation Now on October 5, 2021. As revealed by PlayStation.Blog, all of these games will be available on PlayStation's streaming/game download subscription service for an indefinite amount of time except for The Last of Us Part 2, which will leave the service on January 3, 2022. Speaking of The Last of Us Part 2, those who choose to download the game to their PS5 will be able to take advantage of the game's PS5 performance patch that offers an option to make the game run at 60 FPS. In our The Last of Us Part 2 review, we said...
Sony has begun testing free game trials on PlayStation 5, allowing users to play a few hours of games before purchasing them – but it's not a perfect service just yet. As spotted by Eurogamer, the trial feature appears to be available only in the United Kingdom right now, and currently includes just two games - Death Stranding: Director's Cut and Sackboy: A Big Adventure. For those wondering how long you can play each game, that seems to be dependant upon what you choose. Death Stranding: Director's Cut gives players up to six hours of free gameplay while Sackboy: A Big Adventure offers five. However, the actual amount of time that players will end up spending in the game is likely to be considerably lower than that. In a decision...
According to Capcom's COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto, the company behind Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Street Fighter, and many more is planning to "mainly focus on PC software" in the future. As reported by VGC, Tsujimoto was speaking to Nikkei and shared that the success of its PC software has been "driving global sales" and that he thinks "PCs will be the next big thing after smartphones." “PC is driving global sales,” Tsujimoto said. “We have recently stated that we will make the PC our main platform. At this year’s Tokyo Game Show, we focused on exhibiting the PC version of Monster Hunter Rise, and I think people will be able to experience the change in our approach. “The pandemic is changing the way people look at PCs.
