Battlefield developer DICE has given us our first look at what Battlefield 2042 looks like on last-gen consoles. On Twitter, the official Battlefield account posted a picture of what the game will look like on Xbox's last-gen system. See for yourself below: It's good to see DICE being transparent with the last-gen versions of Battlefield 2042, especially after the state of Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 and Xbox One at launch left many players skeptical of last-gen versions. If you ae planning to play Battlefield 2042 on Xbox One or PlayStation 4, EA has announced that dual entitlement will only apply to the new-gen versions. This means even if you only have a last-gen console, you should still buy the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version to play...

Since time immemorial, Japanese video games have followed a typical release schedule. Launch in Japan first, followed by a localized release for other countries a few months, or even years, later. But this trend shifted dramatically in 2021. Many high-profile Japanese games such as Tales of Arise, Shin Megami Tensei V, and both Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Stories 2 have been launched day-and-date worldwide. So, what has changed? A simultaneous global ship date allows Japanese games to make a bigger, more immediate impact than ever before, which can create more lasting interest in not just a single game but its whole franchise. Seeking that impact comes at a cost, though -- challenges include implementing tighter workflows...
Ubisoft has announced Ghost Recon Frontline, a PvP first-person shooter that will be free-to-play. With support for over 100 players, it's an objective-focused spin on the incredibly popular battle royale genre. Public play testing will begin this month, but a full release date has yet to be announced. Ghost Recon Frontline’s flagship mode is Expedition, in which 102 players are divided up into teams of three to battle for victory on an island map. To win, a team must find and claim three pieces of intel, which will allow them to then head to a designated drop zone and extract from the map. When the extraction helicopter is called, though, other players are alerted and have the chance to attack and steal that team’s extraction in...
Even more evidence has emerged pointing towards the release of the long-rumored Grand Theft Auto trilogy remaster. @videotech_ on Twitter looked at the back end of the latest Rockstar Games Launcher update, and sure enough, they found slots for Grand Theft Auto III, San Andreas, and Vice City. This comes less than a week after Korea's Game Rating and Administration Committee released a rating for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition. A Kotaku report from August of this year originally said that the three classic GTA games would head to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC, Stadia, and mobile devices. The games will apparently feature a mix of "new and old graphics." Rockstar has yet to officially...

Despite this year’s many game delays — God of War Ragnarok, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Gotham Knights, and many others were pushed into next year — 2021 has thus far been a great year for video games. The first full year of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S era has brought us nearly 60 games (so far) that IGN awarded a review score of 8 or higher. As we enter the final quarter of the year, we've compiled a list of every such game — new, standalone releases (no DLC) that received an 8 ("Great”), 9 (“Amazing”), or 10 (“Masterpiece'') from IGN. Click through the gallery below or continue scrolling for our full list of 2021's 58 best games, ordered from lowest score to highest. Note: This list will be updated through the end of...
Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is out today, and there's hope that it might be a big hit in the competitive fighting game community. It's impossible to look at gameplay of the newest platform fighter starring the likes of SpongeBob, Nigel Thornberry, CatDog, and other Nicktoon stars without drawing deep parallels to Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. series. The Melee community is still highly active today, bringing CRT televisions to tournaments and playing Melee online through modified versions of the game. Despite Nintendo's tendency to shut down select Smash-related community events, the Melee fanbase has endured due to a deep love of the game. But in addition to their long-term love affair with Melee, many players in the Smash community...
EA has announced that players who purchase the standard digital edition of Battlefield 2042 will be able to upgrade from PS4 or Xbox One to new-gen PS5 or Xbox Series X/S versions free of charge. This is a u-turn on EA's previous stance, which required players to own the more expensive Gold Edition to be entitled to an upgrade. The standard digital edition of Battlefield 2042 now includes EA's 'dual entitlement' feature, meaning it comes with both generations of the game. So far, EA has only announced this feature for the digital version of Battlefield 2042, and so - at least currently - it appears that physical copies of the game will not include the dual entitlement new-gen upgrade. Prior to this change, dual entitlement was only...

Fortnite is gearing up for another Halloween event with a spooky, “Fortnitemares” themed map and, of course, some new skins featuring original designs and collaboration with Universal’s monster movies. This year’s Fortnitemare will have a card theme as evident in the promotional poster Epic Games released today. Starting today, players can jump into Halloween-themed maps, games, and experiences made by the community and featured in the Fortnitemares playlist menu. Halloween Outfits will also take over the store this month. Fortnite will be rolling out the outfit reveals throughout the month and a Fortnitemare card will flip over to reveal which new item is entering the store next. As part of the month’s festivities, Epic is teaming...
Nintendo has announced that the Kingdom Hearts games will be coming to Nintendo Switch. Revealed as part of Mr. Sakurai Presents, Smash Bros. series creator Masahiro Sakurai announced that the series will be available via cloud gaming, which will allow you to play the series up to and including Kingdom Hearts 3. The Switch versions will include Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts 3. While the Switch versions for these three games were announced, there is so far no release date. This will be the first time the mainline games will be available on Switch, although Kingdom Hearts has been on Nintendo's console already thanks to Melody of Memory. The Switch versions were...
There was something quite special about the original Oxenfree. Night School Studio’s walk-and-talk adventure game lets players uncover the mysteries of Edwards Island, fall for (or be sassy to) its ensemble cast of characters, and make plenty of dialogue choices along the way as things got creepier and creepier. Thanks to a hands-off preview session with Oxenfree 2, the sequel isn’t looking to break what isn’t broken. Instead, it seems the developers, nearly all of whom are back from the original, have found clever ways to deepen the base of Oxenfree’s world and spin it out into surprising new attempts to break our brains a little, and introduce some endearing new characters to boot. Oxenfree II is set in the same world as the...

Ethereum, the decentralized, open-source blockchain, appears to have arisen in part due to the creator "crying himself to sleep" over a nerf to the Syphon Life spell in World of Warcraft. As spotted by Polygon, Vitalik Buterin, the Canadian-Russian programmer credited with the development of Ethereum back in 2013, says that he first realised his concerns surrounding centralized services during his time playing World of Warcraft in the late 2000s. "I happily played World of Warcraft during 2007-2010, but one day Blizzard removed the damage component from my beloved warlock's Siphon Life spell," reads Buterin's about.me bio. "I cried myself to sleep, and on that day I realized what horrors centralized services can bring. I soon decided...

Sony has announced that The Last of Us Part 2, Fallout 76, Desperados III, Amnesia: Collection, FInal Fantasy VIII Remastered, Yet Another Zombie Defense, and Victor Vran: Overkill Edition are all joining PlayStation Now on October 5, 2021. As revealed by PlayStation.Blog, all of these games will be available on PlayStation's streaming/game download subscription service for an indefinite amount of time except for The Last of Us Part 2, which will leave the service on January 3, 2022. Speaking of The Last of Us Part 2, those who choose to download the game to their PS5 will be able to take advantage of the game's PS5 performance patch that offers an option to make the game run at 60 FPS. In our The Last of Us Part 2 review, we said...
Sony has begun testing free game trials on PlayStation 5, allowing users to play a few hours of games before purchasing them – but it's not a perfect service just yet. As spotted by Eurogamer, the trial feature appears to be available only in the United Kingdom right now, and currently includes just two games - Death Stranding: Director's Cut and Sackboy: A Big Adventure. For those wondering how long you can play each game, that seems to be dependant upon what you choose. Death Stranding: Director's Cut gives players up to six hours of free gameplay while Sackboy: A Big Adventure offers five. However, the actual amount of time that players will end up spending in the game is likely to be considerably lower than that. In a decision...
According to Capcom's COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto, the company behind Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Street Fighter, and many more is planning to "mainly focus on PC software" in the future. As reported by VGC, Tsujimoto was speaking to Nikkei and shared that the success of its PC software has been "driving global sales" and that he thinks "PCs will be the next big thing after smartphones." “PC is driving global sales,” Tsujimoto said. “We have recently stated that we will make the PC our main platform. At this year’s Tokyo Game Show, we focused on exhibiting the PC version of Monster Hunter Rise, and I think people will be able to experience the change in our approach. “The pandemic is changing the way people look at PCs. Smartphones...
Ten years ago, EA unwisely attempted to reboot its NBA Live basketball franchise, which was then coming off one of its most successful entries to date. The result was NBA Elite, an entry so bad that it effectively killed the franchise while wholly ceding the video game basketball market to NBA 2K. At the time, NBA 2K was a critically acclaimed basketball sim — NBA 2K11 is often called one of the finest sports games ever made — but it didn't take long for the lack of competition to have an effect on the franchise. These days, NBA 2K22's positives are buried beneath an avalanche of product placements and microtransactions. With no competition, 2K has little incentive to change its ways, even as fans take to sites like Metacritic to...
Like a flashlight flickering to life from a freshly inserted set of Energizers, Alan Wake Remastered takes the 11-year-old survival horror shooter and presents it in its most radiant form. Yet while the details in its moody environments are now far easier to make out, its gameplay shortcomings are presented in equally stark relief. Alan Wake Remastered’s twisted brand of psychological torture by torchlight still makes for a supremely tense trip through the woods, but as a shooter it’s stuck in the past compared to more modern games – including developer Remedy’s own Control. If you missed it the first time around, Alan Wake Remastered’s story remains a novel one in every sense of the word. When crime fiction author Wake’s wife goes...
Amazon Games' New World has begun preventing players from creating new characters in full servers as it continues its efforts to bring queue times down for the hugely popular game. In an update on Twitter, the MMO developer announced that it has created a new system to help it better manage server capacity going forward. "Whenever a server is full, the server will be greyed out with the messaging 'Character Creation is temporarily disabled on this server to prevent overpopulation'," says Amazon Games. While the change means that new players to the game will be limited in terms of the severs that they can join, the studio went on to confirm that the system will not affect pre-existing characters within a server, who will be able to...
Illfonic, the developer behind Friday the 13th and Predator: Hunting Grounds, is working on a Ghostbusters game. As pointed out by ResetEra user chairhome, Illfonic studio co-founder Raphael Saadiq casually revealed the title in a recent interview on the music podcast Questlove Supreme. Saadiq let slip news that the company is working on a Ghostbusters tie-in after being asked how many games the studio currently has out. "Friday the 13th [is] the last one and Predator and we're working on Ghostbusters right now," Saadiq says before quickly moving on to talk about the studio's most recent project, Arcadegeddon, which is currently available in early access and out in 2022. Saadiq didn't return to the topic of Ghostbusters for the...
Ubisoft has confirmed a long-held fan theory about the villain of Far Cry 2, the Jackal, and how he connects to the original Far Cry story. “The Jackal is actually supposed to be Jack Carver from the original Far Cry,” said Clint Hocking, Far Cry 2's Creative Director, while talking to IGN for the latest Inside Stories documentary, How Far Cry's Iconic Villains Were Created. “Jack Carver in the original Far Cry was this shifty, smuggler, gun runner kind of crook,” Hocking explained. “The idea was [the Jackal] is just him, 10 years later or something, after he's seen whatever he saw on this island [during the events of Far Cry]. Maybe it was drug induced, maybe it's post-traumatic stress disorder, or maybe it's real. But the idea is...
Alongside Xbox reiterating its commitment to making games more accessible for the "estimated more than 400 million gamers with disabilities across the globe," 343 Industries has given a sneak peek at some of the accessibility features coming to Halo Infinite. These updates and many more were part of Microsoft's Xbox Accessibility Showcase, and 343 Industries' Paige Johnson stopped by to share some of the accessible and customizable features that will be part of Halo Infinite when it is released on December 8, 2021. The team's goal was to "make the newest journey into the Halo universe more accessible to as many gamers as possible." This includes veterans of the series and those who "struggled to play due to barriers that hadn't...
Due to the rising COVID-19 rates in Romania, Valve has made the decision to cancel the in-person event for Dota 2's The International 2021 tournament and will instead host a digital-only event. Valve shared the news in a blog, confirming that all ticket sales will be refunded for those who were planning on attending the event in person. "We have been carefully evaluating the continued rise of Covid rates in Romania, as well as the resulting introduction of new local restrictions in Bucharest," Valve wrote. "To ensure the safety of all players, talent, and production staff participating in the event, we have decided to refund all ticket sales for The International 2021. "We wanted nothing more than to welcome fans live to the event...
Fighting game tournament ARCREVO is coming back and will be headlined by Guilty Gear Strive, the latest title in the long-running Guilty Gear series. Riku Ozawa from Arc System Works revealed the news about the fighting game tournament during the company’s special program during Tokyo Game Show 2021 on Sunday. The event will be held in three general regions — North America; Japan and Korea; and Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) — though no specific cities were announced. Qualifying in North America begins December 11 and the finals will be held on March 19, 2022. The event will be held online in February of next year in the Japan and Korea region, while qualifying for the EMEA region begins this month, with the finals...
How Far Cry's Iconic Villains Were Created
If there’s one thing everyone remembers about Far Cry it's the villains. Characters like Vaas, Pagan Min, and Joseph Seed have all easily earned their place in the bad guy hall of fame. Over time, the role of the villain in Far Cry has become increasingly important to the series’ identity, so much so that in the latest installment – Far Cry 6 – the antagonist is played by one of the most recognisable villain actors of all time: Giancarlo Esposito. The journey to this high point has been the result of wild audition tapes, ambitious writing, dedicated performances, and an E3 demo that miraculously turned a cut character into Far Cry’s iconic bad guy that started it all. This is the inside story of the evolution of Far Cry’s villains...
The development team behind Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin have been taking player feedback to heart as they work to improve the game ahead of its release next year – in ways even they didn’t expect. After hearing all the speculation from fans about the identity of Chaos following the initial demo that was released in the summer, the developers — a collaboration of minds from Square Enix and Team Ninja — went ahead and included his name (Jack Garland, i.e. the name of the main character) in the new trailer that was shown during Tokyo Game Show 2021. “The protagonist is Garland, and I’d had in mind for a while that one day, I’d like to tell the story of how Garland turns into Chaos,” producer Tetsuya Nomura said during a...
