I’m a service robot drifting through an abandoned space station. My superior is chattering in my ear trying to set up the stakes of the story, but I’m too busy to listen because I’m playing with a toothbrush. After batting it around in zero-gravity like an impatient cat, I use my finger to prod the button in the centre and – to my delight – my palm starts buzzing like a fridge. Moments like this speak to the strengths and weaknesses of Lone Echo 2: Ready at Dawn’s latest is a stunning virtual reality game with an incredible level of detail, but there’s very little substance to either the gameplay or the story. This is the sequel to 2017’s Lone Echo, a VR adventure about the relationship between Captain Olivia Rhodes and her charming...
I played the first handful of levels from Unpacking, a game about unpacking a character's household items after a series of moves over the course of their life, while my own life sat wrapped in cardboard boxes in stacks behind me. Now, as I write this weeks later, I'm unpacked in real life half a continent away. After days and days of wearing down box cutters, shoving furniture around, and dragging empty cardboard to a growing monstrous pile in the garage, I'm full of appreciation for what Unpacking the game does to unpacking the activity. Developers Wren Brier and Tim Dawson have managed to filter out the most aggravating, tedious, and difficult bits of moving from Unpacking, leaving only the soothing bits where you put items in the...
When Bethesda Softworks published the online multiplayer RPG Fallout 76 in Japan on November 15, 2018, it marked an exciting first for the long-running post-apocalyptic series. Because of the need to remove and alter content for the Japanese market, Bethesda had previously released Fallout games in Japan a month or two after their global launch. But the publisher decided to buck this trend with Fallout 76, debuting it day and date with the rest of the world. The simultaneous release didn’t prevent Japanese players from criticizing Fallout 76 for many of the same reasons others did. But, as Fallout 76 gradually improved, the Japanese player base quickly distinguished itself as one of the most surprising and creative communities to come...

Darkest Dungeon 2 is getting a bit of a visual update over its predecessor. While it keeps the gothic aesthetics of the first Darkest Dungeon, there’s a new “dimensionality” to the art style. In the first real look at Darkest Dungeon 2, Red Hook Studios showed off a slick new visual style that is faithful to the first Darkest Dungeon but translates the world into 3D. Darkest Dungeon 2 will feature 3D environments and gameplay portions, but the combat and characters still retain the 2D look. Check out the trailer below. It’s a successful way to update the character models without losing any of the artistic elements that made the original visual style so beloved. By adding new 3D models while keeping the hand-drawn look of the...
Activision Blizzard is currently facing serious ongoing allegations of harassment and mistreatment of marginalized workers. To learn more, please visit our timeline as well as our in-depth report on the subject. Blizzard has revealed the new name for the Overwatch character formerly known as Jesse McCree: Cole Cassidy. The official renaming will take effect in-game on October 26. In the official tweet announcement, Blizzard appears to be acknowledging Cassidy's name change as part of the game's lore, referring to Cassidy as a character "running from his past" and ultimately choosing to "be honest with his team and himself" about who he really is. Cassidy's renaming was initially announced in August. The character was formerly named...

Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher creator CD Projekt has acquired indie studio The Molasses Flood, which will now work on a new game based on one of CD Projekt's IPs. Announced to investors today, CD Projekt announced that it had bought 60% of the Boston studio initially, and organised transactions to takeover the remaining 40% over time. The Molasses Flood will collaborate with CD Projekt's development unit, CD Projekt Red, but will retain "full autonomy". The announcement mentioned that The Molasses Flood "will work on its own project based on one of CD Projekt’s IPs." That's likely a game set within the Witcher or Cyberpunk universes. CD Projekt has previously said that it will developer AAA Witcher and Cyberpunk games...
Beloved indie survival games Don't Starve and Terrarria are trading monsters as part of a collaborative Halloween crossover. Over on Twitter, the Terraria account announced that the two games would be trading elements with a video captioned, "Just a bit of news, no big deal." The accompanying clip showed Terraria's Eye of Cthulhu breaching into the world of Don't Starve - much to the confusion and bewilderment of the game's protagonist Wilson. A subsequent reply from Don't Starve developer Klei added its own captioned video. The short teaser clip showed Don't Starve's Deerclops stomping through a blizzard-filled Terraria landscape. "Oops, I think we mixed something up somewhere," reads the accompanying caption. "Oh well, I'm sure it...

Amazon has announced that it will be taking measures to ban players who recently exploited a glitch in New World's 1.0.3 update, which brought server transfers to the game. As reported by PCGamer, the "gold dupe" glitch allowed players to duplicate gold and items. How it works is that if players sent gold to another player and logged off and then logged back in again, the gold they traded beforehand would still be in their inventory. Of course, word of this glitch spread quickly. Amazon addressed the glitch in a statement and said that "players found deliberately using this condition to gain advantage will be banned for exploiting. We will also remove items or gold received where appropriate." Additionally, to curb this glitch...

There were so many moments while playing The Riftbreaker where I stood at the precipice of annihilation: my resources dwindling, my base relatively undefended as I scrambled to put out fires, and tens of thousands of aggressive aliens marching in my direction. Whether I was managing resources, constructing my base of operations, making upgrade decisions for my mech, or battling hordes of enemies, this RTS/top-down shooter hybrid rarely let me feel at ease – in a good way. Even with several unfortunate bugs and a bland story, surviving by the skin of my teeth through meticulous time management and split-second decision-making made it all worth it. As a frontiersman sent to colonize the uncharted planet of Galatea 37, you run around in...
Stardew Valley creator ConcernedApe's next game will be Haunted Chocolatier, a brand new sim that bears a strong resemblance to his previous work. It's so similar, in fact, that it looks like it could even be a sequel, though ConcernedApe isn't ready to confirm that one way or the other. In a brief reveal on Youtube, ConcernedApe showed off Haunted Chocolatier's beautiful new world. Much like Stardew Valley, it will be a top-down pixel-based sim, and it looks to have much the same flavor as ConcernedApe's previous work. Some of the initial characters include Maddie, who asks what it's like to live in the big city, as well Jett and Nigel. Presumably you will be able to date quite a few of them. ConcernedApe, the pseudonym for...
While the Mass Effect Trilogy remains one of the most beloved trilogies in all of gaming, the ending of Mass Effect 3 is still as divisive today as it was in 2012. Now, certain members of the development team at BioWare have spoken up and shared a bit about what the original ending plans were and why they may have used those controversial color choices. These developers who worked on Mass Effect 3 were part of a People Make Games video titled 'The Inside Story of Mass Effect 3's Endings, Finally Told,' and they were very open about not only the game's actual ending and what could have been, but also the reception to it finally being out in the wild. SPOILERS AHEAD for Mass Effect 3. When people talk about the endings of Mass Effect...
Battlefield 2042 had an interesting open beta to say the least. While fans were excited to finally get their hands on the newest iteration of the popular series, the beta also sparked debate about many of EA's design choices, particularly the introduction of Specialists. In a lengthy new blog post meant to share takeaways from the recent open beta, EA pushed back against the feedback that Specialists — characters with unique traits that upend the traditional class system — hampered teamwork. Battlefield 2042's developers also explained that the decision to use an older build for the beta was mostly down to stability, and also discussed some of the more granular changes that are being implemented as a result of the feedback. In...
As part of its 25th anniversary celebrations for Tomb Raider, Square Enix has published three new videos featuring an array of details from the cancelled survival horror game Tomb Raider: Ascension. As shown on YouTube, the three videos focus on different elements of what could have been for Ascension, had the game not been replaced by the franchise's preferred 2013 reboot. In the first clip, the publisher shows off a range of concept art for the game where fans can see its island setting as well as a number of characters designs. "After narrowing in on the concept of a survival story on a remote island," says Square Enix in the video's description on YouTube. "Crystal began developing what was internally called Tomb Raider...
Imagine yourself walking through a tunnel in the underground ruins of the ancient Sumerian Empire. The camera focuses tightly behind your back, adding to that sense of claustrophobia and dread as you clunkily move through the caverns. Suddenly, you hear the distinctive screams of famed High School Musical diva Sharpay Evans from ahead. You know you’re about to be met with a heart-pounding fight against some godforsaken terror that will be sure to test your quick-time event skills. This is what it’s like to play every game in The Dark Pictures Anthology series, and its latest tale, House of Ashes, is no different. If, like me, you think Until Dawn was one of the most interesting games to have come out of the last generation of...
Upcoming Borderlands spin-off Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is heavily inspired by tabletop RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons, but it’s not using the ideas of the Forgotten Realms wholesale. There’s no thief and warrior classes here; instead developer Gearbox has created unique takes in its Stabbomancer and Brr-Zerker classes. These two classes are the first to be revealed from Wonderlands’ multiclass system, which allows you to mix and match six unique character skill trees to create your ideal character. Stabbomancer is a stealth (or as stealth as Borderlands gets) class seemingly inspired by D&D’s Rogues. These critical-hit-focused assassins can summon magical spinning Ghost Blades that can be thrown like a deadly frisbee, and use a magical...
Halo Infinite won't launch with ray tracing on PC, but developer 343 Industries says it's one of the studio's "top development priorities post-launch". In a blog post, 343 announced that AMD is the game's PC partner, with the two pursuing "a close, long-term partnership with Halo across both engineering and marketing efforts." While saying that that partnership has helped the team optimize the game for everything from high-powered PCs to much older hardware, 343 added that "we’ve identified opportunities for additional configuration options, performance tweaks, and memory improvements across both PC as well as console and we’re working together on more optimization solutions that should benefit all platforms." One of those additional...
Google has begun offering its Stadia streaming technology as a white label product – effectively letting other companies use the tech without becoming a part of the Stadia ecosystem. The first notable example of this comes from AT&T, which is offering customers the chance to play Batman: Arkham Knight as a streamed game, for free. As reported by 9to5Google, AT&T is allowing customers to stream Arkham Knight for free. AT&T's website makes no mention of Stadia tech being used to stream the game, but both AT&T and Google subsequently confirmed to IGN that the technology being used is the Stadia architecture, but outside of the Stadia platform itself. It's worth noting that Arkham Knight isn't even available as part of the Stadia service...
New World is currently being affected by a deflationary currency crisis so bad that on some servers, players have started bartering raw materials with one another instead of spending their increasingly valuable coins. As per an article by Player Auctions, Amazon's latest MMORPG is currently facing a troubling time with deflation. Unlike other MMOs, which often have to combat inflation caused by players generating more money through grinding out quests and amassing small fortunes, New World is facing quite the opposite problem. According to the article, the game's primary methods for distributing New World's currency to players across the land - through monster drops, salvage, and completing quests - aren't offering enough coins to...
I'm taking this opportunity to recommend a criminally under-loved game. Huntdown is now 50% off, it's a damn fine sidescrolling shooter, and it'll give you a purer cyberpunk fix than CDPR's recent efforts. (Extra bonus: the launch trailer for it was money.) Beyond that, I've spotted some terrific first-party PS games, an IGN GOTY going cheap on Xbox, plus a whole bunch of Resi and MGS gems in franchise sales. Get scrolling to get saving...
