If you took Uber and fused it with firefighting, you’d get EMBR. That’s basically the premise of the game here, with random schmucks taking up the mantle of firefighting but on call in a world completely overrun with phone-obsessed un-phased people. Your job is to rescue people from the fires that will try and take […] The post EMBR fuses capitalism with firefighting to hilarious effect appeared first on Green Man Gaming Blog. 2023 has without a doubt produced a staggering wealth of absolute gaming bangers, meaning that trying to pick out something resembling a definitive list of the best games of 2023 is a little more difficult than it otherwise would have been. Undaunted however, we have nonetheless forged ahead and done just that, so without further […] The post The Best Games Of 2023 appeared first on Green Man Gaming Blog. Continue reading...
Since 2009, Call of Duty has topped the video game sales charts in the US almost without fail, only torn down from its throne by Rockstar hits Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto V in their respective release years. But now, a third contender is preparing to overthrow Rockstar and Activision's domination of US gamers' wallets: Hogwarts Legacy. This is according to Circana's monthly report on US video game sales, which has Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 as the best-selling game of November, but still only the second best-selling game of the year to date. It's currently being beaten by Hogwarts Legacy, and at the rate things are going, it's possible (though not guaranteed) that's how it'll end the year. If Hogwarts Legacy tops...
Mortal Kombat 1 is on track to deliver cross-play support for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X | S players sometime in February 2024. Developer NetherRealm Studios announced the update during a recent livestream, promising to release the long-awaited multiplayer feature in only a few months. It’s something that fans were told would not make the reboot entry’s launch build but should still arrive soon. NetherRealm intends to follow through, meaning fans won't have to wait much longer to play with friends on other platforms – minus Nintendo Switch. The livestream also revealed that Wi-fi filter support will arrive in the near future. It gives Mortal Kombat 1 multiplayer fans the option to decline matches based on another user’s...
I'll be honest: Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown sounded just fine on paper, but what I really wanted was the long-gestating remake of the greatest Prince of Persia game of them all, The Sands of Time. That 2003 gem channeled the spirit of the classic original game while brilliantly modernizing it. The franchise has arguably been chasing that high ever since. But that remake is still MIA. So when I sat down to play the first few hours of The Lost Crown, then, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this wasn't some low-budget, 2.5D attempt to recapture that early 21st-century glory. Instead, Ubisoft's first properly new Prince of Persia game since the 2008 reboot is its own game – a Metroidvania – and it's such a great fit that I'm...
Netflix announced a new suite of games coming to its subscribers in the next year. Highlighting the list is Sonic Mania Plus, which will be available to Netflix subscribers sometime next year. As noted in the press release, this will be the first time Sonic Mania Plus will be available on mobile as part of Netflix Games. When it releases, those subscribed to Netflix can download an ad-free Sonic Mania Plus mobile version on their Android phone, iPhone, or iPad. Released in 2018, Sonic Mania Plus is the definitive version of the 2017 game Sonic Mania. The biggest difference between the two versions is Sonic Mania Plus included new content, such as two additional playable characters, a new game mode, and a four-player competition mode...
December is a big month for the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, with the addition of Rockstar’s GTA 5 hot on the heels of the explosive debut trailer for GTA 6. As Sony points out in a post on the PlayStation Blog, GTA 5’s arrival into the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog nicely lines up with the game’s newly launched update, GTA Online: The Chop Shop, which introduces a new Salvage Yard business, Drift Races, and more. Elsewhere, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin and Metal: Hellsinger hit the subscription service. On the Classics side, we have confirmation of previously leaked old Disney/Pixar games finally hitting the Catalog. All titles are playable from December 19. Here’s the list: PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium |...
The hotly anticipated next-gen update for Fallout 4 is delayed to an unannounced release date in 2024, Bethesda has announced. Confirmation comes from the Fallout X/Twitter account, which thanked fans for their patience. “Thank you for your patience with us as we work on the Fallout 4 next-gen update,” the posts reads. “We know you're excited, and so are we! But we need a bit more time and look forward to an exciting return to the Commonwealth in 2024.” Bethesda announced the Fallout 4 next-gen update in 2022 with a release set for some point in 2023. Given there are only a few weeks left of this year, its delay to 2024 was expected. The update, set for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, includes a performance mode that...

Action game fans have feasted this year with returning series and fresh new ideas providing a wide range of ways to test your thumbs to their limits. So whether you want to wield the power of the Force, pilot towering war machines, or just get down with the rhythm, here are the games that let us live out our power fantasies as we reveal IGN’s Best Action Game of 2023. Runner-Up: Turbo Overkill A high-speed throwback to bullet-barraging FPS games of old, Turbo Overkill hands you an explosive selection of guns and a chainsaw for a leg before telling you to unleash hell. Fun, frenetic, and flashy, it wastes no...
The role of accessibility in games is ever-evolving. In 2020, accessibility entered the mainstream space when publications and award shows began covering innovations like Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II. A title featuring dozens of options specifically for accessibility purposes was relatively unheard of at the time, and since TLOU2’s release, the industry’s understanding of what makes a game accessible and enjoyable has drastically shifted. 2023 is proof of this concept. With every new release – whether AAA or indie – disabled players can know with certainty that a game will include some form of settings or inclusive designs. While IGN has a clear winner for the most accessible game of 2023, the nominees for this category are...
The recently released Fortnite Festival looks set to get instrument controller support early next year, raising the prospect of a full-blown Rock Band revival. Peripheral manufacturer PDP posted on X/Twitter to tease its pretty clear plans to release a guitar controller for Fortnite Festival, which was developed by Rock Band maker Harmonix as one of a trio of new games launched in the battle royale. "Rock on this January", the post reads, alongside emojis of a tent and a moon (a clear reference to Fortnite), plus music, guitar, and s controller. While Fortnite Festival does not support instrument controllers at launch, publisher Epic Games confirmed to IGN it is a priority for the team to add it in the future, and that it’s...
The developers of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 have had a bit of fun with cheaters who are being naughty in Multiplayer. Cheaters found a way to use the Zombies Ray Gun in standard Multiplayer matches after the iconic weapon was added in Season 1 for the new, limited-time Vortex game mode — clearly unintended gameplay that resulted in some overpowered shenanigans. Here's how the Ray Gun looks in Multiplayer: In response, the developers turned the Ray Gun on the cheaters, making it so it causes damage to whoever wields it rather than does damage to enemies. According to a post on X/Twitter from the COD Updates account: “Players illicitly accessing the Ray Gun in Multiplayer will now inflict self-damage upon use.” It’s a fun...
In the days since The Game Awards last week, there have been a number of discussions from fans and developers about what the show should have been, or should not have been. And one common thread among them was a desire to hear more from more developers who were accepting awards. While a number of award winners did get up and give speeches that were limited to roughly 30 seconds, some other winners never took the mic at all. The Game Awards has in recent years presented several of its categories rapidfire, between announcement trailers, with no opportunity for winners to get up and give speeches. In some cases, whether you agree with them or not, you can maybe see the thinking behind that choice: it's a three-plus hour show, Baldur's...
Valve really wants you to stop huffing your Steam Deck exhaust fumes. No, really. Maybe stop doing that if you are. In a Dec. 12 Reddit post, one Steam Deck user shared that they got the official verdict from Steam Support on whether or not it's "safe to inhale the exhaust fumes" from the device. The user also clarified in their help request that the practice has become a running joke among other Steam Deck owners. Three days later, Steam Support finally put the debate to rest. "As with all electronics, it is generally not recommended you inhale the exhaust fumes on your device," the response said. "While there are no safety concerns with general usage, directly inhaling the device's vent fumes should be avoided. We understand that...
Surprising absolutely no one, Fortnite and Lego snap satisfyingly together like a couple of plastic construction bricks. Combining the building creativity of Lego sets with Fortnite's expansive and often gorgeous island playgrounds is a smart match that creates an approachable yet fairly deep survival game. But while it streamlines a few of the more cumbersome aspects of the genre, Lego Fortnite also has the distinct feel of an early access game, trading as much on its future potential as its currently polished systems. There's a solid foundation here that developer Epic Games will surely build on over time, but Lego Fortnite can feel somewhat empty at launch – what's here is fun, there's just not very much of it. If you're familiar...
Rockstar Games has released a trailer for today’s Grand Theft Auto: Online update that highlights The Chop Shop and Liberty City’s Yusuf Amir. It’s a 30-second video that aims to bring GTA 5 fans back into the driver’s seat with fast cars, eccentric characters, and new missions to enjoy. It’s a closer look at a more substantial addition that Rockstar promised late last month. It’s a Liberty City-meets-Los Santos crossover that takes players back to the golden days of GTA 4, but as detailed in a blog post from Rockstar, it also adds new content to enjoy. However, you’ll mostly be spending your time stealing cars and selling them off for profit. Players will utilize Salvage Yards as hubs for vehicle-stealing operations. “There are...
Ubisoft has just released Update 1.0.6 for Assassin's Creed Mirage, which introduces many improvements and new additions to the game, including a New Game Plus mode. Noted in the patch notes, installing Update 1.0.6 will allow players who have already completed Assassin's Creed Mirage to start a New Game Plus save. Aside from the added benefits of New Game Plus, such as keeping all the skills and gear you accrued in your first playthrough, those who start the mode in Mirage can skip the prologue and head straight to Baghdad. More interestingly, Ubisoft revealed that players starting a New Game Plus playthrough will unlock Bayek's Medjay outfit. Assassin's Creed fans will recall Bayek being the protagonist of 2017's Assassin's Creed...
Bethesda Game Studios is working on some quality-of-life improvements for Starfield, including city maps, new ways to traverse in space, and more. In a new post on the Starfield subreddit, Bethesda published a statement to the community revealing that it was "hard at work" to address various issues that have been brought to the development team's attention. Specifically, Bethesda acknowledged that early next year, there will be a big update that will include a lot of "in-progress quest fixes." The developer is also planning to add several new quality-of-life improvements to Starfield that the community has heavily requested, including official mod support, city maps, and new ways to travel. "These will be rolling out with a regular...
Microsoft’s high-profile legal battle with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over the fate of its $69 billion buyout of Activision Blizzard unearthed a number of explosive revelations, among them the fact Microsoft renegotiated ZeniMax's deal with Disney to make Bethesda's upcoming Indiana Jones game exclusive to Xbox and PC, thus ditching the PlayStation 5 version. During the trial, Bethesda's Pete Hines revealed that Disney had an agreement with Bethesda owner ZeniMax for a multiplatform AAA Indiana Jones game, but after Microsoft bought the company, the agreement with Disney was amended to transition the Indiana Jones game to an Xbox and PC exclusive. At the time, Hines said the game was set to hit Game Pass on day one. Several...
It’s rare that a whole new genre emerges. It’s even rarer when a new genre breaks out of its niche and becomes a significant part of the medium as a whole. But that’s exactly what has happened with Soulslikes. There’s a whole movement of games inspired by Dark Souls, and with the likes of Lords of the Fallen, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, and Lies of P arriving over the past 12 months, 2023 was the ultimate proof of that. No longer just clones riding the coattails of FromSoftware, these games have built on the Souls ruleset and bloomed into a scene all of their own. Hence, there seemed no better time than now to give Soulslike its own category for this year’s IGN awards. For this new category we wanted to celebrate the growth and evolution...
With both Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 launching within the first quarter, it was clear that 2023 was going to be a strong year for horror remakes. But what we perhaps wouldn’t have counted on as the year began was that this was going to be a stellar 12 months for the horror genre as a whole. It’s been such a good year for it, in fact, that we had to give it its own award category. There have been so many great horror games this year, spanning numerous different sub-genres and studio sizes. As previously mentioned, it’s been a fantastic year for remakes, proving the classics can be as relevant today in their revitalised forms as they were when they first arrived in the 2000s. But it’s also been a period of wonderfully experimental...
Hot on the heels of a new full-sized Sonic game in Sonic Superstars, the Apple Arcade exclusive Sonic Dream Team might not look like it has much to offer at first. It only has a dozen levels, and all you get control-wise are a D-pad and two buttons. For some, the fact that it’s only available on Apple devices (at least for the time being) is a non-starter all its own. But despite all that, Sonic Dream Team more than manages to justify its existence – in fact, its superb level design and bite-sized missions make it one of the most fun, creative, and enjoyable 3D platformers I’ve played in a long time. Sonic Dream Team’s story kicks off when Dr. Eggman finds a device that brings his dreams into reality. This is obviously bad news for...
Dark mist, bloody meat hooks, and one, lonely killer — these are the sinister ingredients for Dead by Daylight, Behaviour Interactive's asymmetrical survival horror game. Since releasing in 2016, the popular multiplayer has repeatedly elaborated on this basic formula by mixing in great horror IP, like by recently adding '80s murder doll Chucky to its killer roster and Alien's unshakeable Ellen Ripley to its bank of survivors. It pushed open the doors to its dreadful universe by creating a half-joking dating sim and comic book series, but it's never expanded its mythology as ambitiously as it plans to with Until Dawn developer Supermassive Games. After teasing a collaboration earlier this year, Behaviour announced plans at The Game...
If there’s one genre that lends itself to boom or bust, it's the online shooter. For every success like Call of Duty, Halo, or Apex Legends, it seems like there are at least a dozen other games that have come and gone with barely a spark before they fizzle. With so many good competitive shooters in play, what makes one stand out? What makes it worth diverting your time to in versus another? After my first night of matches in The Finals, I think I’m starting to get a picture for how it answers those questions. If The Running Man were about 3v3v3 gun battles, it would’ve resembled The Finals. The vibrant color palette combines with a pair of live sports-style play-by-play announcers to give it that over-the-top, American Gladiators...
From Nintendo’s triumphant follow-up to Breath of the Wild to the hot pink perfection of Barbie and so much more, 2023 has been a landmark year for games and entertainment. Indeed, IGN has labeled 16 games, movies and TV shows a masterpiece over the past 12 months, with countless more worthy of your time and money. Admittedly, it’s also been a year of polar opposites, and Skull Island: Rise of Kong wasn’t the only stinker to receive a bad score (I’m looking at you, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey). The games industry suffered a huge number of lay-offs too, and Hollywood strikes put release calendars on hold as screenwriters and actors fought for better working conditions. So while 2023 had its low points, we wanted to shine a...
Call of Duty developers past and present have taken to social media to express their frustration with a comment made by God of War voice actor Christopher Judge at The Game Awards. During a speech delivered by Judge at The Game Awards on December 7, ahead of him presenting the Best Performance award to Baldur's Gate 3's Neil Newbon, the actor made fun of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's campaign. "I’m not going to stand up here, making long speeches. I’m going to stick to the script. No eight-minute speech like last year," Judge said, referencing the 2022 award ceremony when he won Best Performance for his role as Kratos in God of War Ragnarok. "But fun fact, my speech was actually longer than this year’s Call of Duty campaign," he...
If you were put off by the idea that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is an always-online game, I have some good news: Rocksteady Studios confirmed that it will make the story mode available offline, but only after the game releases. In the official Discord server for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, a Rocksteady employee confirmed in the announcements channel that the developer plans to add an offline story mode. As you can see from the screenshot below, the offline story mode won't be available at release, but Rocksteady is "aiming to add this update in 2024." During a February State of Play held this year, Rocksteady confirmed that not only would Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League require an online connection...
Fortnite’s Rocket Racing is a brand-new arcade racer that tests your driving skills with gravity defying mechanics. Developed by Psyonix, creators of Rocket League, Rocket Racing captures the same competitive feel, just on a racetrack. Here’s how Rocket Racing plays as a competitive racing game and what to expect from content and cosmetics in the future. Movement Mechanics Rocket Racing isn’t your typical car racing game where you just have to optimize your turns and drifts. Along with classic race mechanics, you have to pay attention to your surroundings so you can break some rules and find new alternative paths to cross the finish line first. Picture more Mario Kart-esque and less Forza Motorsport. Using the Air Dodge move, you...
