I’ve played Dead Island 2. That’s an odd sentence to write in 2022. First announced back in 2014 with its now-infamous trailer featuring a zombified runner, we’ve seen next to nothing of the game since. The almost decade-long radio silence likely had most people believing that Dead Island 2 was, well, dead. Until now. I’ve played Dead Island 2. A whole 20 minutes of it. It’s real. It’s genuinely planned to be released in 2023. And, from what I can tell, I think it’s got the potential to please a lot of Dead Island fans. Despite a long absence, Dead Island 2 is still what it originally set out to be: an open-world, co-op, California-set sequel to Techland’s well-received (if incredibly shonky) original. While that vision was first...
Dead Island 2 developer Dambuster Studios has created a bespoke gore system for its upcoming zombie-slaying sequel, and it's one of the most detailed ever seen in games. “We’ve probably spent an unhealthy amount of time passionately developing our own gruesome gore tech, which we codename internally FLESH,” explained Dead Island 2’s game director, David Stenton, in a conversation with IGN. “That’s short for Fully Locational Evisceration System for Humanoids.” “[This system] allows players to slice, dice, chop, dismember, melt, bludgeon and break zombies in all kinds of spectacular and stylish ways,” he continued. “And it’s all fully procedural as well.” The new trailer shows off a strong selection of gory kills, but Stenton has a...
Gamescom Opening Night Live snuck in a lovely, longer trailer for Blacktail - a game about witchcraft and the legend of Baba Yaga that we've seen in showcases before, but never to this extent. Blacktail is a twist on the traditional Slavic myth of Baba Yaga, and follows a young girl cast out of her home due to accusations of witchcraft. The choices she makes as she wanders will determine what kind of witch she ultimately becomes - a guardian of the forest, or an utter terror. We get a good look at a lot of Blacktail's combat in this video, specifically use of both the bow and arrow and the character's magical abilities fighting monsters and wild animals. We also get more teases about the morality system, where you can decide the fate...
After a long wait, we've gotten a new look at The Outlast Trials, and it's quite gruesome. Revealed at Gamescom's Opening Night Live event, The Outlast Trial reveals a world reminsicent of BioShock, complete with freakish masks. Be warned, because the new trailer is not for faint of heart or weak of stomach. The Outlast Trials is a spin-off from developer Red Barrels' horrific first-person horror series. The Outlast Trials was first announced back in 2019, and adds multiplayer to the horror mix. Set amid the Cold War, you play a human guinea pig recruited to test methods of brainwashing and mind control. You'll be trying to survive deeply unethical experiments alone, or with up to three partners. In addition to the first look, The...
Dead Island 2 received its first trailer in 2014. Eight years later, it just got a second trailer, announcing that it will arrive February 3 next year. Announced at Gamescom's Opening Night Live showcase, a new cinematic trailer showed Jacob, one of six playable characters in the game, seemingly infected with a virus, bashing his way through a variety of undead. The montage shows him slaughtering his way through Los Angeles, using both a gun and a katana. A second trailer showed off the first new gameplay, which has been re-built from the ground up by developer Dambuster Studios. It is incredibly gory, with brutal melee combat carving zombies in two and turning them to red mush. It's been a long and troubled road for the...
Today at Gamescom Opening Night Live, new studio Ironbird Creations was revealed alongside a tease of its first project: a new game called Phantom Hellcat with hack-n-slash combat taking place in a cursed theater. Phantom Hellcat starts Jolene, who breaks a seal on said cursed theater, prompting the darkness to take her mother hostage. As the chaos grows, Jolene must use the props around the theater as weapons to fight back, smashing up sets and collecting character masks to learn new abilities. Her travels will take her through 3D/2D camera-shifting perspectives as she explores different plays and sets. There's no release date yet, but Phantom Hellcat is expected to release on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC when the time comes...
A brand new look at Gotham Knights has revealed that Harley Quinn and Clayface will be major villains. Gotham Knights will be released on October 21. Shown as part of Gamescom 2022's Opening Night Live, the new trailer put a spotlight on Gotham Knights' rogues gallery, which will feature both Clayface and Harley Quinn alongside previously revealed villains Mr. Freeze, the Penguin, and the Court of Owls. As announced during the show, Gotham Knights will be released a few days earlier, coming out on October 21 instead of the previously announced release date of October 25. Gotham Knights will see players take on the role of either Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, or Red Hood and take up the duties of a recently deceased Batman. While...
Developer Everstone Games has unveiled its new open-world RPG, Where Winds Meet. The PC title is an action-adventure game set in the beautiful Ten Kingdoms period of medieval China. Where Winds Meet debuted a gorgeous reveal trailer at Gamescom that highlights just how expansive its open-world setting is. While we still need to see the game in action ourselves before making any full assessment, it’s not unfair to say that Where Winds Meet is competing with the AAA open-world games like Ghost of Tsushima and Assassin’s Creed. The trailer highlights several gameplay elements including horseback riding, combat skills, exploration, hunting, and more. The massive open world is being designed to encompass numerous locations including the...
Age of Empires 4 is getting two brand-new civilizations. The Malian and Ottoman civilizations were revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live, adding additional layers to the popular game. As shown during ONL, the Malian civilization will focus on wit and strategy to out-manouvre the enemy. As for the Ottoman civilization, it'll have access to powerful weaponry, including fortress wall-destroying cannons. The new civilizations arrive on October 25 and join the English, Chinese, Mongol, Delhi Sultanate, French, Abbasid Dynasty, Holy Roman Empire, and Rus civilizations already in the game, bringing the total up to 10. The original release also had four single-player campaigns available at launch. Age of Empires 4 was released at the...
Genshin Impact developer HoYoverse has revealed a mysterious new story trailer for its next game, Honkai: Star Rail, as part of Gamescom 2022's Opening Night Live show. The trailer shows us a main character seemingly having a nightmare about his past, in which a voice tells him "Of five people, three must pay a price." We get glimpses at the inside of the titular spacefaring train, just before it makes a hyperspace jump. It doesn't reveal much more about the game, but give sus another look at HoYoverse's signature living anime style in a new setting. We last saw Honkai: Star Rail at Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest, which showcased a different story trailer that gave us a better look at the characters and plot of the game. There's...
Owlchemy Labs has just unveiled its next project at Gamescom Opening Night Live: an untitled VR game that has been built from the ground up for hand tracking, and may have something to do with...eating? We didn't see any gameplay in this extremely early teaser - hence the confusion. We instead saw multiple people wearing VR headsets speaking to one another while one of them appeared to be about to eat something disgusting in VR. The tagline for the game is "You had to be there." Additionally, we've gotten a look at one piece of concept art that emphasizes the multiplayer social and hand tracking aspects of whatever this is: “The first time we saw and used our own hands in VR we realized this is the future of the platform," said...
After being delayed to December, High on Life received a brand-new trailer during Gamescom's Opening Night Live presentation. The fresh look at Squanch Games' first-person shooter revealed a first look at a near-complete boss fight. In the gameplay clip, the player fights against 9-Torg, a clone that has a bounty on their head. The small boss fight arena fills with green toxic sludge, which the player avoids by swinging around from grapple points. The grapple hook is also keen to remind you, in very course language, that he's also a bullet deflection tool as well as a deadly knife. It seems like talking weapons are quite a feature of High on Life, since your handgun also chats to you, too (albeit in a much friendlier manner). First...
Today at Gamescom Opening Night Live, Focus Home Interactive announced Atlas Fallen, a new game where your weapons are made entirely out of sand. Atlas Fallen takes place in an understandably sandy world, where two warriors fight various creatures somewhat reminscent of Monster Hunter enemies, using shape-shifting weapons made of sand, as well as (yes) sand-based skills and abilities. The campaign can be played either solo or fully cooperative when Atlas Fallen comes to PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC in 2023. Atlas Fallen is being made by Deck 13, developers of 2017 action RPG The Surge and its 2019 sequel, The Surge 2, which we thought managed to "recapture a lot of what made the original Souls-style sci-fi adventure fun," but...
At Opening Night Live a new sci-fi sim game was announced from Frontier Foundry and Haemimont Games titled Stranded Alien Dawn. Described as a planet survival sim, Stranded: Alien Dawn follows a community marooned on a deadly alien world. Haemimont, the developers of city builders like Surviving Mars, is promising a survival experience where players begin with nothing but the essentials to survival. There will be illnesses to cure, extreme weather, and hostile alien life to combat. Harvest nearby resources and build a secure area for your group of survivors on the alien planet. While defending your community is important, Stranded: Alien Dawn stresses the importance of caring for each member of the group. Utilize individual...
Unknown Worlds, the creator of survival hit Subnautica, has announced Moonbreaker, a digital tabletop strategy game in the mould of Warhammer 40,000 – right down to being able to paint your units. Revealed at Gamescom's Opening Night Live showcase, the game is due to release into PC and Mac Early Access on September 29, and will see players collecting units, building rosters, painting models, and bringing them into turn-based battles. The hook to all this is that you can even paint your miniatures, just as you would in a physical tabletop game. Options look to be plentiful, with dozens of shades, and multiple brush types to simulate real world painting. If you don't want to paint, you can use colour schemes created by professional...
Souls-like Pinocchio story Lies of P made an appearance at Gamescom Opening Night Live today, with a new trailer showing off more gameplay, more emphasis on the lying system, Geppetto, and possibly Jiminy Cricket. The trailer shows off a number of new locations, character, and enemies, but most notably puts P face to face with a man calling him "son," presumably his father and creator Geppetto. There's something sinister about the interaction though, and given what we know about this dark twist on the Pinocchio story we might be in for a heartbreaking reunion. Another strange tidbit in the trailer was the presence of a small cricket cage at P's waist, from which a voice assures him, "I'm here for ya buddy! Don't worry!" It's entirely...
A new trailer for Sonic Frontiers has revealed some new plot details for our speedy friend's next adventure, as well as confirmed the release date leaked earlier today of November 8 this year. Shown at Gamescom's Opening Night Live event, we see Sonic running around various levels, including large, open areas like what we've seen in much of the footage up to this point as well as levels that look more like new iterations on both 2D and 3D Sonic games prior. We see a few mysterious new characters, including a small, cute creature at the opening, more robotic villains, and a mysterious, glitchy young foe associated with them. Most notably, we get a glimpse of Sonic's friend Amy trapped in some sort of device that appears relate to the...
Return to Monkey Island will be released on September 19. Yes, that's International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Announced during Gamescom's Opening Night Live, the long-awaited sequel (and apparent conclusion) to the seminal adventure game series will hit Switch and PC next month. It will arrive for other consoles at a later date. The announcement was paired with a trailer that included, of all things, horse armor jokes (which just sits in your inventory). We also got a closer look at the updated artwork. Announced earlier this year. Return to Monkey Island is a sequel to the second game in the series, and mostly ignores the events of the original Monkey Island 3 and subsequent games. The project brings together original co-creator Ron...
Hogwarts Legacy has shown off new gameplay, which includes students investigating the roots of Salazar Slytherin, encountering dark magic, and fighting off zombies. Shown off at Gamescom's Opening Night Live event, the gameplay trailer shows two students exploring Slytherin's catacombs and then, slightly terrifyingly, being given the choice of which one to have Crucio (a torture curse) cast on them. We then see fiery combat against zombies, a bone-strewn staircase, a troll and, because it's Hogwarts, an adult who seems very upset with the students for snooping around. The game also showed off a Deluxe Edition bonus, the Dark Arts pack, which you can see below: After many, many leaks, Hogwarts Legacy was announced in 2020, but was...
Techland has revealed the first trailer for Bloody Ties, a new story DLC chapter for Dying Light 2. Shown at Gamescom 2022's Opening Night Live show, Bloody Ties will take you to a brand new area of Villedor known as The Carnage Hall. This old opera house has been converted into a place for bloodsport, and you'll be competing in a tournament with the hope of earning great riches. That tournament will be the stage for all sorts of new challenges, including facing off against Skullface, Bloody Ties' new villain. It's also a space to experiement with new weapons and gear, which naturally are set to be a big part of the DLC. Techland was originally due to launch the story DLC in the summer, but delayed it by a few months. As promised...
Quantic Dream and developer Parallel Studio have announced Under The Waves, a new narrative-driven adventure game coming in 2023. Revelaed as part of Gamescom 2022's Opening Night Live show, Under The Waves follows Stan, an oil company diver in the 1970s who is exploring the depths of the North Sea. Underwater exploration will take you to caves and wrecks, as well as showcase marine wildlife. While beneath the waves Stan experiences a strange series of events that forces him to face isolation and grief and ultimately decide if he wants to return to the surface world. Under The Waves hopes to shine a light on the importance of ocean preservation, and Parallel Studio has partnered with Surfrider Foundation Europe, a non-profit...
Good news for fans of cooperative chaotic games like Overcooked and the first Moving Out - the latter is getting a sequel. Announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live, we got a look at the new furniture shifting antics of Moving Out 2. In a sizzle reel featuring various moving jobs, Moving Day 2 was confirmed to include online co-op, meaning you will be able to work alone or with a friend. However you play, it looks to feature the same chaotic co-op moving action as its predecessor. In our review, we called the original Moving Out "enjoyably tense and frequently hysterical," and since its launch it's also gotten multiple free updates and some DLC. We also got a chance to chat with Lenny Macaluso, the unusual but deeply talented source...
Today at Gamescom Opening Night Live, CI Games announced its Hexworks studio is rebooting its 2014 Souls-like Lords of the Fallen, with the new version getting just the smallest of title changes to The Lords of the Fallen. Like its predecessor, The Lords of the Fallen is a dark fantasy action RPG. However, it appears to be taking advantage of the eight years difference between the two to expand massively on the ideas of the original. The Lords of the Fallen takes place over a thousand years after the first game in a world that is supposedly "more than five times larger" than that of Lords of the Fallen and is split between the realms of the living and the dead. The world will contain NPC quests, a customizable protagonist, and a...
At Gamescom Opening Night Live, Striking Distance Studios founder Glen Schofield was there to deliver a new update to the upcoming sci-fi horror game, The Callisto Protocol. During Opening Night Live, Schofield revealed a new gameplay trailer that showed off Callisto Protocol's combat. We got a good look at its extreme goriness, including the protagonist pushing an enemy into a weird meat grinder-like appartus, brutally stabbing a foe in the head, and getting sliced up by a giant fan at the end of a long sewer-like water slide. We also learned about the "mutations" mechanic. Some enemies may have tentacles coming out of them - if you don't defeat the tentacle enemies quickly, they will mutate into much stronger versions with new...
Funcom officially announced its announced its open world survival MMO, Dune Awakening at Gamescom's Opening Night Live. A short teaser gave us Dune's famous "Fear is the mind-killer" quote, while hinting at giant spice-harvesting vehicles, even more giant sand worms, and sand worm riding. Coming for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S and "is set on Arrakis and takes inspiration from both Frank Herbert’s novels and Denis Villeneuve’s Academy Award-winning film while exploring exciting new possibilities in the franchise." It's the first we've seen of Dune Awakening, but we've known Funcom has been working on it. The company has been actively hiring for the project, saying "We invite you to come shape a world made boundless by its...
Bungie has revealed a ton of new information regarding Destiny 2's upcoming Lightfall expansion including a February 28 release date. Announced during its Destiny 2 Showcase 2022, Lightfall will mark "the beginning of the end" and is set to be the next major expansion that pushes Destiny 2's story and gameplay forward, featuring the game's second Darkness subclass called Stand. This new style of play appears to be heavily linked to traversal, as players will use it to grapple and swing around a whole new Destiny 2 map on Neptune. Strand involves the manipulation of spooky green psychic energy and will materialise in different ways depending on which class the player uses. The Neptune map is called Neo Luna, a newly discovered city...
Like the Arkham series before it, Gotham Knights is a game that draws from many corners of the Batman franchise to create its own, cohesive universe. This is a game that shines a spotlight on the Dark Knight's former sidekicks and the shadowy Court of Owls. But the game isn't simply borrowing from existing Batman mythology; it's also making some key additions of its own. And one of those additions is the focal point of Gotham Knights' prequel comic book, Gilded City. Written by Evan Narcisse (Rise of the Black Panther) and drawn by ABEL (Harley Quinn), Batman: Gotham Knights - Gilded City is a story that takes place both in the immediate leadup to the game and in Gotham City's distant past. And it all hinges on a new DC hero, a 19th...
Resident Evil 7 Biohazard was almost a live service game filled with microtransactions according to Capcom producer Jun Takeuchi. Speaking with horror game veteran Shinji Mikami (and spotted by VGC), Takeuchi said there was a big marketing push at Capcom to make a game that “players are asking for”. At the time, this meant making a game with live service features, microtransactions, and other online elements. "We were being told ‘make this, make that’," Takeuchi said. "It was really hard on the directors at the time. Online multiplayer this, downloadable content that. Ongoing service games. Microtransactions. 'Make a Resident Evil game that ticks all those boxes [they were told]'." There were so many demands placed on the directors...
In the hunt for something genuinely new, more and more developers are creating hybrids; smashing two genres together to make a wonderful Frankenstein’s monster of a game. Sunday Gold is one of the more enjoyably odd of these experiments I’ve seen in recent years. A mashup of Final Fantasy and Broken Sword, this slick-looking comic book crime drama is, bizarrely, a turn-based point-and-click adventure. And, from the three hours I’ve played so far, the combination appears to work surprisingly well. Set in near-future London, where it’s always raining and the billionaires are fatter than they’ve ever been, Sunday Gold puts you in control of a trio of criminals attempting to bring down Kenny Hogan, the corrupt head of a massive...
Good news if you’ve reserved a Steam Deck – it’s shipping a lot quicker than expected. Valve’s incredibly popular handheld PC has seen an influx of orders and preorders since it was first announced, and now it looks as though the company is finally getting a handle on production. “A few of you may have received an order email for your ‘Q4 window’ Steam Deck reservation today,” said Valve’s Lawrence Yang via Twitter. “This wasn’t a mistake! Production has outperformed our estimates, and we’ll be moving more Q4 folks into the Q3 window. “Official announcement and info coming soon,” he added. “In the meantime, check your email and visit [the Steam Deck website] while logged in, and check your reservation just in case it came in early...
