With Blumhouse’s new Five Nights at Freddy's film releasing this year on October 27, there’s no better time than now to play through the Five Nights at Freddy’s games. Created by Scott Cawthon, the first game launched back in 2014 and has since garnered an incredible fan base and followed up its horror hit with a wide variety of games; from mainline installments to plenty of spinoffs. For those interested in taking on the night shift against these killer animatronics, we’ve detailed how to play each of the mainline FNAF games in both chronological and release date order below. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been stumbling around looking for a lot of in between games this year. Tears of the Kingdom pretty obviously has dominated a huge chunk of my life for the last month. And recently I was in LA for Summer Games Fest. Earlier this year, I was playing Kirby, and when I get home, I have Humanity waiting for me. But all of these games have been a bit too high stakes to just chug away at the whole year. Lately I’ve needed something slower, something I could get lost in. And recently, I’ve found myself dipping in again and again to a little game called Havendock. Havendock is a city builder – one of those cozy ones that presents goals but low stakes, so you don’t have to frantically sort out a civilization as...
One of Celeste’s images is also one of its most striking. Following an intense dream, Madeline awakens with tears in her eyes. She is laying in bed, looking pensive as she stares up at the ceiling. On the table is a bottle of pills. To her left is a childhood picture with her mother. You can read any number of emotions into that expression, but it’s apparent that she’s caught in a moment of reflection. The transgender community, for its part, zeroed in on pointed cues like the trans flag on Madeline’s desk. More than a year later, Celeste creator Maddy Thorson finally acknowledged what was obvious to queer fans: Madeline is transgender. “This feels painfully obvious to a lot of (mostly trans) people, and likewise it feels painfully...
Today's testimonies in the FTC's legal battle to press pause on Xbox's merger with Activision were bookended by a closed session with Microsoft senior finance director Jamie Lawver and a brief questioning of Google Stadia product director Dov Zimring. But the real meat of today was the Phil Spencer show. The suit-clad head of Xbox kept steady throughout a lengthy questioning by the FTC before laying out, in cross-examination, a clear map of Xbox's mobile-focused strategy for acquiring Activision. When Microsoft wrapped up its inquiries, Spencer's stint at the front of the court was concluded by a rather awkward line of questioning during which he found himself patiently explaining to FTC lawyer James Weingarten how, exactly, money...
GameStop and Target may have leaked the release date for Sonic Superstars following the Sonic Central livestream. As spotted by Wario64, GameStop and Target, where Sonic Superstars is up for pre-order, listed its release date as October 17 on their websites, a month earlier than most Sonic game releases. IGN, however, found that the release date was later switched to the placeholder date of December 31, 2023 on both retailers' websites. Sega of America did not respond to IGN's request for comment on the matter. Sonic Superstars was revealed at Summer Game Fest earlier this month with a Fall 2023 release window. Given that the trailer for the game dropped so recently, it would mark a pretty quick turnaround to reveal its exact...
The best way I can possibly describe what I've played of Testament: The Order of High Human is that it's like Dark Messiah of Might and Magic directed by Tommy Wiseau. It's bizarre, slightly unsettling, often unintentionally funny, but overall not very successful at what it sets out to do. It has some great character art and interesting environments to trek through, and there does seem to be a robust, physics-based magic system in the trailers that I only got a tiny taste of in the demo. But it's difficult to find much to praise here. As a writer and editor, I'll get my biggest pet peeve out of the way quickly: This is not a game that was written by anyone with a strong grasp of the English language. Inconsistencies, even in how the...
After Nintendo’s remake-packed Direct on June 21, and Sega’s Sonic Central on June 23, it seems like the majority of the events we’ve tucked into our Summer of Gaming season are now complete. After we covered more than 528 games over the course of 25 livestreams, and saw 137.5 million YouTube views and 336 million minutes (that’s 639 years) of IGN coverage watched during the past four weeks, it’s time to look back on those predictions from a few weeks ago to see if my dumb ideas were actually any good. I made 21 predictions in total, and I got 12 of them right. That’s not quite as good as I’d hoped, but considering how weird and unpredictable things have been around game releases over the past few years, it’s actually not too bad...
While Microsoft has said before that it has no intentions to withhold Call of Duty from PlayStation consoles should its acquisition of Activision Blizzard go through, Xbox boss Phil Spencer doubled down on that today in strong terms during the company's FTC trial. During day two of the trial, Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley pointedly reminded Spencer that he was under oath and asked him if Microsoft would indeed continue to ship to PlayStation. "I would raise my hand. I will do whatever it takes," he said in court. "We have no plan. I'm making a commitment standing here that we will not pull Call of Duty - it is my testimony - from PlayStation." This is in line with Spencer's previous statements on the issue of Call of Duty...
Xbox's Phil Spencer has confirmed The Elder Scrolls 6 is still "many years away". The Xbox boss is also still being careful about mentioning which platforms the Skyrim sequel is planned for, saying: "It’s difficult for us right now to nail down." Spencer testified about the status of The Elder Scrolls 6 during today's Microsoft FTC trial, tiptoeing around the planned platforms for the game given how far away it is. While his hesitation could be referencing uncertainty surrounding whether the game will be a console exclusive, it's not out of the realm of possibility to consider that The Elder Scrolls 6 may skip the current generation of consoles entirely. There was some confusion surrounding The Elder Scrolls 6's potential...
Xbox boss Phil Spencer blames Sony for the lack of a native PlayStation 5 version of Minecraft. During today's portion of the Microsoft FTC trial, Spencer claimed Sony was hesitant to give Microsoft access to PlayStation 5 dev kits ahead of the console launch in 2020. “Sony was reluctant to send us development kits for the PlayStation 5 at the same time they were sending them to other developers, which put us at a disadvantage relative to other developers,” Spencer said. “I think Sony could have sent the development kits to Microsoft just as easy as they sent them to any other publisher.” “Sony was reluctant to send us development kits for the PlayStation 5 at the same time they were sending them to other developers, Minecraft is...

Starfield is coming this September as an Xbox console exclusive, but there was a time when things almost played out very differently. On the witness stand as part of today's trial between Microsoft/Activision Blizzard and the FTC, Xbox head Phil Spencer confirmed that there were discussions about Starfield potentially skipping Xbox consoles prior to Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax. This part of Spencer's testimony was filled with questions about third-party exclusivity deals, where the Xbox boss also confirmed that Sony signed Square Enix to a deal to keep Final Fantasy 16 as a PlayStation 5 console exclusive. Spencer said Xbox "needed to do a lot of work with a lot of partners given the competitive situation we had against the...
Sega revealed the Sonic vs. Dr. Eggman's Death Egg Robot LEGO set on the Sonic Central livestream today. As part of the collaboration between Sega and LEGO, the new 615-piece set brings Eggman's iconic mech from Sonic 2, which comes with a removable capsule that contains the animals (or Flickies, as they're called in Sonic lore) the mad scientist captures, and his badniks. With his mecha suit all powered up, Eggman will be able to face Sonic, who will blast into him with the Speed Sphere and save all the animals. Dr. Eggman's Death Egg Robot is the fifth set in the LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog series. The first four sets that were previously released include Tails and his Tornado and Amy and her ice cream stand. "We’re a little over 30...
The second update for Sonic Frontiers comes out today with exciting new features just in time for Sonic's 32nd birthday. The latest wave of content updates for the game was unveiled during the Sonic Central livestream today, and it will gift Sonic the long-awaited Spin Dash move, allowing him to spin his way through the Starfall Islands and Cyber Space levels at the speed of sound. You can try out the Spin Dash and some other new moves out in the regular game and New Game+, which will allow you to start the game from the beginning with the skill tree filled and power-up levels maxed out. To keep the celebration going, the update will bring new collectible Koco, who are all wearing party hats, and accessories such as the sunglasses...
Microsoft’s recent excellent Xbox Showcase laid bare something we’d already suspected: that the Xbox is about to become the go-to platform for role-playing games – particularly Western RPGs. It’s an interesting shift for a platform that, from its very inception on the back of the Halo franchise, was informally known as the “shooter box.” None of this is a surprise – not when Microsoft purchased Obsidian, inXile, and then Bethesda Game Studios – but now all of Microsoft’s RPG cards have been laid out, and the hand they’re holding is mighty impressive. To wit: Xbox now has at least one major, exclusive, first-party RPG lined up for the next 3-4 years, if not more. From what I have seen and played, nothing in Starfield is shallow. The...
Diablo 4 players have unearthed a number of secret post-credits endings that tease the return of one of the series’ most famous villains and perhaps a new big bad. Diablo 4 spoilers follow. It turns out Blizzard’s action role-playing game has a secret ending that pops up after the credits have rolled, although it does not always appear, and there are in fact multiple endings that may or may not trigger following repeated completions of the campaign at various difficulties. Jamir Blanco, cinematic character and creature artist at Blizzard, took to Twitter to confirm the secret endings are legit. WowHead reports four different jumpscare post-credits endings have been found so far, each showing an unnamed demonic entity. These...

A few months ago, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority hinged its block of the Microsoft-Activision merger on cloud gaming, momentarily seeming to put to bed worries that Call of Duty exclusivity might kill the deal. But as the FTC met Microsoft in a US court today over a potential pause on the impending acquisition, all the Call of Duty fears have been dredged right back up again. And it's partially thanks to the no-longer-secret inner workings of a previous deal: Xbox's 2021 acquisition of Zenimax. Growing Up to Be Just Like Zenimax The FTC had already dropped several hints that it was preparing to make an example of Zenimax, most notably in a recent filing calling the merger "powerful evidence" against the much larger...
In what has proven to be a lively first day of testimony at Xbox's Activision Blizzard trial, Xbox vice president Sarah Bond dropped yet another bombshell, claiming that Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick demanded a greater revenue share to put Call of Duty on Microsoft's platforms. According to Bond, Kotick made it clear “if we did not move beyond standard revenue share that he intended to not place Call of Duty on Xbox.” Ultimately, Bond said, Xbox decided to meet Activision Blizzard's demands. "Time was limited. We had players whose expectations we wanted to meet, so we ultimately made a decision that it was the best thing for the business.” Bond's comments were in response to questions from Microsoft counsel, in which she...
Bethesda's Pete Hines has spoken about Xbox exclusivity in the years following Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax, saying that developing for fewer platforms has streamlined the process in some cases. During today's trial between Microsoft/Activision and the Federal Trade Commission, Hines was asked about developing games like Redfall and Starfield as Xbox console exclusives. Hines said developers can hold more rounds of quality assurance testing when a game is on fewer platforms, which he called less of a risk than developing for many platforms. Hines spoke on Starfield, saying it wouldn't hit its September date if it was a multiplatform title. "We would not be putting [Starfield] out in nine weeks if we were supporting an entire...
