Someone has made a mod for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt which replaces beloved horse companion Roach with a vicious fiend for Geralt to ride around The Continent. Nexus Mods user apokryphos created the Rideable Fiend Mount mod, which does exactly what it says on the tin, letting monster and monster hunter team up to take on the world. What's more, the fiend even mimics Roach's behaviour by backing Geralt up when not being ridden, and its savage swipes are a touch more effective than a horse kick. Only a handful of Fiends exist in The Witcher 3 naturally, and the massive monsters are always a threat. "Fiends are walking mountains of muscle capped with horned, tooth-filled heads," reads the in-game bestiary entry. "When possible they avoid...
If you're concerned that a little "ting" of euphoria didn't sound when you beat that really hard boss in Elden Ring expansion Shadow of the Erdtree, it's actually intentional. FromSoftware's highly anticipated expansion doesn't have PlayStation Trophies or Steam or Xbox Achievements. The downloadable content, which adds a wealth of new content to beloved role-playing game Elden Ring, is available today, June 21, 2024, and some fans are surprised to see that, despite its roughly 25 hours of additional exploration and bosses, Shadow of the Erdtree doesn't feature a new set of Trophies or Achievements. Releasing an additional set of digital rewards is the norm for big DLC expansions. The DLC for Fallout 4, Horizon: Forbidden West, God...
A Red Faction sequel was in the works at the Embracer-owned developer of Galaxy On Fire and Chorus before it was hit by layoffs, according to a new report. Rock, Paper Shotgun reported that Fishlabs, bought by controversial video game group Embracer in 2018, was working on a sci-fi Metroidvania and had built a “visual prototype” for a brand new Red Faction game before both projects were canceled and their developers laid off in 2023. Embracer had already shut down the original creator of the cult classic Red Faction, Volition, by the time Fishlabs put together its Red Faction pitch. According to RPS, a team at Fishlabs built a “fake trailer” with Unreal Engine 5 to present to Embracer-owned publisher Plaion, with the hope of creating...
Ubisoft has insisted it's committed to the Beyond Good & Evil franchise and even mentioned its long in development sequel as part of the reveal of Beyond Good & Evil - 20th Anniversary Edition. Beyond Good & Evil 2 is considered vaporware by many fans after an incredible 16 years since it was announced back in 2008. Despite Ubisoft’s many vague references to it being still alive, no video game has materialized thus far. But this week's announcement of Beyond Good & Evil - 20th Anniversary Edition has sparked renewed hope that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is real and may even be re-revealed sooner rather than later. This remaster includes a brand new mission in which players can discover mode about Jade’s past and collective exclusive...
Minecraft developer Mojang has released a native PlayStation 5 version in preview form, bringing the game in-line with the Xbox Series X and S version. The PS5 version adds native 4K resolution support and higher settings for render distances and anti-aliasing, settings already available in Minecraft on Xbox Series X and S. Unfortunately, there’s no word on the addition of ray tracing to either the Xbox Series X or PS5 versions, despite Microsoft teasing the tech years ago. The first preview of the native PS5 version of Minecraft is available now for testing. If you own the PlayStation 4 version for your PS5, you can test this early version by heading to Settings and then Preview within the game. This preview includes the new Tricky...
Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki is interested in developing a more traditional Japanese RPG, but if such a project does come to be, don’t expect it to be based on a select few past FromSoftware games. The Dark Souls creator spoke about his desire to explore new gameplay styles during an interview with Rolling Stone. He explains he isn’t interested in leaving his own mark on many previous FromSoftware IP because series like Kings Field and Enchanted Arms are too connected to the work of other developers. “I think a lot of these games are so intertwined with the directors who almost invented that style of game,” he said. “I don’t think there’s a scenario where I myself would make a King’s Field. The same can be said about Otogi...
Finally, fellow Tarnished, we've reached the day of days—launch o'clock for Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree. By now, you would have seen our IGN review for this phenomenal 10/10 masterpiece of a DLC that almost feels like a sequel in its own right. Which, let's be honest, is what you love to hear about a bit of add-on content that's very reasonably priced. Another thing many of us love to hear: a touchstone gaming event like this, that's garnered almost universal praise, has been suitably celebrated with a whizbang edition for diehards. FromSoftware has indeed taken that route with the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Collector's Edition, a not inexpensive bit of kit that we'll be unboxing and tracking bargains for in a moment. (While...
Ubisoft officially announced its long-expected Beyond Good & Evil 20th Anniversary Edition on Thursday, but the publisher deleted its post on X/Twitter about 20 minutes after going live. Still, it didn't take long for the news, which you can see a screenshot of below, to circulate on social media. According to the since-deleted post, it'll arrive pretty soon as well, set to release on all platforms on June 25. It's likely the announcement was the subject of a scheduling mishap, as the remaster had been expected to be revealed at the Limited Run Games Showcase later on Thursday at 11am Pacific. IGN has reached out to Ubisoft for comment. The announcement also arrived with the trailer, which announced that the 20th Anniversary...
The bosses in Elden Ring expansion Shadow of the Erdtree are seemingly developer FromSoftware's toughest ever — more so than those in Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro — as game director Hidetaka Miyazaki has said the team "really pushed the envelope" on what players can withstand. Speaking to CNET, Miyazaki commented on the (at least) 10 new bosses featured in the highly anticipated expansion and said, as is the case in other FromSoftware games, it's the optional bosses which will pose the most challenge. "The new challenges for the player are going to be the boss encounters as well as the different kinds of threats that the world will impose on people," Miyazaki said. Some of these bosses are aimed at players who've completed most...
During an extremely short behind-closed-doors demo for Dune Awakening, I was given my first glimpse at what the team at Funcom is expecting from this open-world survival MMO: A huge time investment from players, a compelling take on the Dune story, and several factions you can choose to learn new skills and abilities from for your journeys into Arrakis. It’s clear that the developers who gave the demo are excited about the concepts at play, boasting that the desert section of the map alone is the size of all of Conan Exiles, and that they imagine you’ll spend 30-50 hours of the game leveling there. But that just seems to scratch the surface of what you’ll be able to do. What makes Dune Awakening different and interesting is the...
The newest trailer for The Alters has Jans asking himself, "What if?" about his life – a question we as players will get to see the answers to in 11 Bit Studios' upcoming survival game in which you'll pull in alternate-dimension versions of yourself (Jans) in order to try and survive a hostile mining planet. Watch it above, and you can see more about how the branching narrative will work in the video below. We've been covering The Alters exclusively all June long as part of our IGN First editorial "cover story" initiative. We kicked off the month by announcing the playable demo before showing you exclusive footage from that demo before it dropped, and then posted the branching narrative explainer video below. You can also read our...
Elden Ring's highly anticipated expansion Shadow of the Erdtree is finally almost here, and developer FromSoftware has confirmed when exactly players around the world can jump in. A FromSoftware post on X/Twitter revealed the release times, so those with the game preloaded can be sitting ready at their systems in anticipation. There are a few caveats to accessing the downloadable content, however, but we'll explain all of those here. Preloading is now available for Shadow of the Erdtree, meaning those who've already purchased it digitally can download it so it's ready in time for launch. Those who've done so can access the DLC at the following times. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree Global Release Times PC Pacific U.S. - June 20...
Steam Deck users looking forward to the release of Elden Ring expansion Shadow of the Erdtree tomorrow, June 21, 2024, may grow a tad concerned to realize the latest patch 1.12 includes a bug which can make the entire game inoperable. FromSoftware revealed on X/Twitter it is working to fix an issue on Valve's handheld PC where inputs stop working if the game is left inactive for more than five minutes. Unfortunately for Steam Deck players, FromSoftware said "the date and time of the hotfix will be announced separately," suggesting it won't be released in time for Shadow of the Erdtree launching. "A Steam Deck related issue has been identified and a hotfix is being worked on," FromSoftware said. "Leaving your Steam Deck inactive for...
Oculus founder Palmer Luckey has announced he is working on a new head-mounted display (HMD) for both military and non-military use. During a fireside chat at the 2024 Augmented World Expo (AWE), Luckey was upfront that the headset would be "driven" by military requirements but have the versatility to do non-military stuff. "...I'm actually building a new headset right now," Luckey explained during the panel. "It's driven by military requirements, but it's also going to be used for non-military stuff. And it's really cool, it's really something." Luckey teased earlier this month that he was working on a new HMD and would formally announce the device at AWE. However, the extent to which the headset would be used in a non-military...
Microsoft has announced plans to return to gamescom this year with what it says is its biggest booth ever at the German games show. Gamescom 2024, which runs from August 21-25, will see Xbox maker Microsoft showcase the likes of Obsidian’s Avowed, Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 76, and Blizzard’s Diablo 4 expansion Vessel of Hatred and World of Warcraft expansion The War Within. It is Blizzard's first gamescom following Microsoft's $69 billion aquisition of Activision Blizzard last year. Here’s the list of games Microsoft said it’s bringing to gamescom 2024 (this list is not comprehensive — expect more announcements at the show): Age of Mythology: Retold Avowed Ara: History Untold Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred Diablo...
Spoiler Warning: This article features mild spoilers for the final boss of Elden Ring. On the eve of Elden Ring's expansion Shadow of the Erdtree launching, FromSoftware has finally allowed players to use Spirit Steed (horse) Torrent against the infamous Elden Beast boss, addressing one of the few complaints players have about the beloved role-playing game. The first chunky Elden Ring patch in a long time was release today, June 20, 2024, with a wealth of features, but perhaps none more exciting than the ability to summon Torrent for the game's final fight. The Elden Beast isn't a particularly difficult fight but many fans did find it quite frustrating due to the arena's colossal size and the boss essentially teleporting around the...
Quick, you only have a few seconds to answer this question: What games are on Steam’s top 10 concurrent players of all time list? PUBG, yes. Counter-Strike 2, absolutely. Elden Ring, for sure. But if you answered Banana, you would… also be correct. The bizarre indie game that consists of repeatedly clicking on a picture of a banana (and nothing else) has become a sensation, at least in sheer number of alleged players. But if you were thinking of giving it a download and checking it out for yourself, let me give you some advice: don’t bother. Banana is not the first game of its kind; the virtually identical game Egg was released earlier this year in February, and new contender Cats showed up after Banana’s release back in April. All of...
Microsoft is now issuing Redfall refunds a month after it announced the end of development, the cancelation of DLC, and the closure of developer Arkane Austin. In May 2024, Microsoft shocked the video game world when it closed a number of Bethesda studios including Redfall maker Arkane Austin and Hi-Fi Rush and The Evil Within developer Tango Gameworks. On Redfall, Microsoft promised a "make-good" offer for those who had bought the now-canceled Hero DLC, which was set to add new characters to the game. Players who bought the Hero Pass as part of the premium Bite Back Edition or the premium Bite Back upgrade can now secure a refund via Bethesda’s customer support website. Digital purchases made via the Xbox Store, Microsoft Store...
Former Dragon Age executive producer and current Veilguard consultant Mark Darrah has said the upcoming game is the first in the series where the combat is legitimately fun. Speaking to Game Informer, Darrah admitted the combat in previous Dragon Age games wasn’t great, but insisted the combat in Veilguard is up to scratch. "What I see in Veilguard is a game that finally bridges the gap," Darrah said. "Uncharitably, previous Dragon Age games got to the realm of 'combat wasn't too bad.' In this game, the combat's actually fun, but it does keep that thread that's always been there. You have the focus on Rook, on your character, but still have that control and character coming into the combat experience from the other people in your...
Danganronpa writer Kazutaka Kodaka's new studio had to take out a loan to fund its next big game, The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, which was revealed during June 2024's Nintendo Direct. Speaking to Famitsu and translated by Automaton, Kodaka said his team at Too Kyo Games was "risking their lives" for the game due to financial and mental pressure, though a publishing partner has since been secured in Aniplex. Development started off rocky, however, after a deal with an initial publisher fell through after "numerous difficulties." Work on The Hundred Line was then restarted but what began as an "indie scale game" quickly grew and demanded more funds. "We decided to take the plunge and take out a loan," Kodaka said, a move...
Fallout creator Tim Cain has for the first time revealed his role in the cancelation of Interplay’s Van Buren, the codename for what was intended to be the original Fallout 3. Van Buren was in development at Interplay-owned Black Isle Studios in the early 2000s, but was canceled amid significant financial problems at the company. Cain, who worked on the first two, much-loved Fallout games in the mid-to late 90s before leaving Interplay to start a new studio called Troika Games, has now revealed the role he played in the cancelation of Van Buren as part of his ongoing YouTube series focused on video game development. As we walked out he basically explained any answer over six months was going to result in him having to cancel it...
FromSoftware is rolling out a new update for Elden Ring that adds a number of features ahead of the release of DLC Shadow of the Erdtree. Following server maintenance today, June 20, patch 1.12 deploys to prepare Elden Ring for the release of Shadow of the Erdtree on June 21. This acts as an update to the Elden Ring base game and a day one patch for the hotly anticipated expansion. Patch 1.12 adds new inventory features, including marking newly obtained items with a "!“, and a new tab called Recent Items so players can quickly review recently obtained items. Elsewhere, there are new Summoning Pool features, such as active Summoning Pools now carrying over to NG+, and individual Summoning Pools enabled / disabled in the newly added...
The developers of Banana, a game about clicking a Banana which has usurped Baldur's Gate 3 and Hogwarts Legacy on Steam's most-popular games of all time list, have insisted it's not a scam. A post on Discord from one of the three listed developers and co-owner of Banana, aestheticspartan, said the team had parted ways with one of its members after it emerged they were accused of being involved in a Steam scam previously. This team member has denied any involvement in a scam, saying instead an influx of money obtained through the Steam marketplace was the result of a bug. Despite their involvement, "there is no scamming or scam going on," aestheticspartan insisted. Banana's gameplay literally involves clicking a banana repeatedly, but...
A now laid-off developer at Paradox has alleged the team behind its The Sims competitor spent “a month in purgatory” before the studio closed down. Game designer Willem Delventhal took to LinkedIn to say they were “devastated” at the cancellation of Life by You, calling recent events “a real s**t show.” Paradox declined to comment when contacted by IGN. Swedish games company Paradox, best known for Crusader Kings, Cities Skylines, and Stellaris, shut down Berkeley, California-based Tectonic just hours after canceling Life by You in a move that affected the studio’s 24 staff. “This is difficult and drastic news for our colleagues at Tectonic, who’ve worked hard on Life by You’s Early Access release,” Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox...
Mortal Kombat 1 has a new patch that finally removes the 30fps cap for cutscenes on PC. NetherRealm’s fighting game launched with a 30fps cap for in-game cutscenes such as Fatalities despite gameplay running at 60fps. Developer NetherRealm has insisted this cap lets it create flashier cutscenes, but some players have said the switch from 60 to 30 and back again is jarring. Now, in a fresh update for Mortal Kombat 1, that 30fps cap is removed with the addition of a new graphics setting that increases the lock to 60fps on PC only, but it’s worth noting that NetherRealm warned this setting is intended for PC gamers with high-end rigs. The patch, also available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, makes a number of character fixes...
Ubisoft has delisted Beyond Good and Evil on Steam ahead of an expected reveal of a remaster. A note on the Steam page for the cult classic adventure signals Ubisoft’s decision: “Notice: At the request of the publisher, Beyond Good and Evil is unlisted on the Steam store and will not appear in search.” At the time of this article’s publication, Beyond Good and Evil remains available to buy on GoG. Ubisoft has said it will announce more news about Beyond Good & Evil - 20th Anniversary Edition during the Limited Run Games Showcase on June 20 at 11am Pacific / 2pm Eastern 7pm UK. It seems likely a re-release is inbound. In August 2023, the Electronic Software Ratings Board (ESRB) rated Beyond Good & Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition for...

The fusion of both Microsoft-owned franchises sees Price, Ghost, Soap, and Gaz of Task Force 141 dressed in Vault Dweller skins. There are Vault-Tec-themed weapon blueprints and other Fallout-themed items for use in Modern Warfare 3, Warzone, and Warzone Mobile. The Tracer Pack: Fallout Vault Dweller Bundle includes two Fallout-themed weapon blueprints featuring Vault-Tec Tracers and a V.A.T.S. Death Effect. If your favorite part of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books or movies is the time spent in the Shire – the lush, verdant, and hilly home of the habitually hungry halflings who live in holes (albeit well-decorated ones) known as Hobbits – then I’ve got good news for you: Tales of the Shire might make you very happy, regardless of whether or not you already play and enjoy the cozy genre. I played an all-too-brief 20 minutes or so, split across two save files: one from the beginning of the game (post-character creator) and another from around halfway through. My takeaway after that time was exactly what I was hoping for heading into the hands-on: that Tales of the Shire is shaping up to be a relaxing, no-pressure, no-drama escape...
Hollow Knight fans were left with an all-too familiar feeling of dismay after 2024's E3-esque video game summer showcases came and went with no word on sequel Silksong. Fans of the franchise took to social media to share their disappointment after the June Nintendo Direct, which premiered yesterday, June 18, had announcements for Mario, Zelda, and even long-missing game Metroid Prime 4: Beyond — but no Hollow Knight: Silksong. "All the major summer showcases have now aired, and we still haven't heard anything new from Silksong," wrote ResetEra user cvbas in a post with more than 10,000 clicks. "What gives?" Fans in the comments admitted to growing concerned for the game, which hasn't received any official updates in over a year when...
