Have you ever wondered what you’d do if you ever ran into another version of yourself? What you’d say? How they’d act? What kind of haircut they’d have? Whether or not you’d be proud of them, and vice versa? How their life would be different from yours? Where they live, what they do for work, who they are? Well, imagine being stranded on a hostile planet and having to create, manage, and work with several versions of yourself to survive. That’s the predicament Jan Dolski finds himself in in The Alters, the latest from This War of Mine creator 11 bit Studios. In a previous interview with game director Tomasz Kisilewicz and lead designer Rafał Włosek, we talked about how The Alters handles branching narratives, but what about the alters...

Helldivers 2 director Johan Pilestedt has defended FromSoftware for the difficulty of Elden Ring expansion Shadow of the Erdtree. As reported by PC Gamer, Pilestedt responded to someone on X/Twitter who complained about the intense difficulty of Shadow of the Erdtree, which has been a heavily discussed topic since its launch on June 21, 2024. Pilestedt initially shared another post saying FromSoftware doesn't make bosses hard for the sake of it, but for the feeling overcoming them gives players. "Indeed, this 1,000%," Pilestedt said. "Good game design is evoking emotion more than anything." X/Twitter user @Indoor_Carrot responded, saying "the problem with this design philosophy is it only caters to a select audience. I tried Dark...

A former Halo and Destiny executive producer at Bungie has said the live service model is "so much better for developers and players" than the one-off $60 or $70 purchase model. Speaking to PC Gamer, Theorycraft Games CEO and former Halo: Reach and Destiny executive producer Joe Tung said the traditional method of buying video games, meaning to make a single payment of around $60 or $70, causes developers to make decisions which were not "in the best interest" of players. "I always felt like, in the $60 boxed product model, I was having to make decisions that were not in the best interest of players," Tung said. The games as a service model is so much better for developers and players. "It was in the best interest of: 'How do we...
The original Resident Evil is now finally available on PC again thanks to a collaboration between Capcom and CD Projekt-owned storefront GOG. An announcement from the latter revealed the classic Resident Evil, not the remastered version, is now available on the store for $9.99. GOG also announced that Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil will join it sometime in 2024, and a $24.99 bundle is available for those who want all three games. Resident Evil originally arrived on PC in 1996 but didn't exist on any digital storefronts until now. Steam, which has the remastered version but not the original, is expected to get the classic version soon, however, as a listing for it was spotted on European rating website PEGI. "In joint efforts...
Elden Ring developer FromSoftware has released its first patch for the game following the release of Shadow of the Erdtree, bringing it up to Update 1.12.2. A blog post from Bandai Namco outlined the changes, which mainly involve a handful of balancing updates. Shadow Realm Blessings have been revised, affecting their attack and damage negation curve scaling. The patch also addresses a PC bug where raytracing settings are automatically enabled if players have previously loaded save data from previous game versions. This can be addressed by visiting System, then Graphics Settings, then Raytracing Quality, and setting Raytracing to Off. FromSoftware made no mention of the bug affecting Steam Deck users that makes the game unplayable...

Shadow of the Erdtree has been out for less than a week, yet dataminers are already hard at work unravelling the DLC's secrets and revealing what lies beneath the armor of the NPC characters and bosses that inhabit the land of shadow. Warning: mild spoilers for Shadow of the Erdtree follow: To that end prominent Elden Ring dataminer and YouTuber Zullie the Witch recently put out a short but information packed video peeling away the armor to reveal the likenesses of no less than 25 humanoid NPCs, ranging from Redmane Freyja to the Ancient Dragon Man. With their outfits stripped away, the vast majority of the NPCs look surprisingly normal, albeit unique with some interesting scars and blemishes, even in the case of the Hornsent, who...

In a press release, Behaviour Interactive confirmed that beginning July 16, those who wish to play as Lara Croft now can do so via the time-limited public test build available on Steam. "With her experiences and skillset, Lara Croft perfectly embodies the characteristics needed to survive in The Fog and is right at home in the world of Dead by Daylight alongside other iconic characters," Behaviour Interactive wrote. Payday 3 developer Starbreeze Entertainment is finally adding what it's called an "offline mode" to the game but it requires an online connection to access and runs worse than normal. As reported by VG247, Starbreeze claims to have finally addressed the "online only" criticism by adding what it's dubbed the Solo Mode Beta. The mode will be updated over time, seemingly to make it a legitimate offline mode at some point, but for now players must be connected to the internet to access it and they won't receive progression rewards until they connect again. When will these updates come? "[Solo mode] will be improved once we improve this feature," head of community and global brand director Almir Listo said in a developer update video...
From the outside looking in, Supervive looks like many a top-down, twin-stick style shooter you may see on any given digital game store. It only takes a couple minutes after dropping into its massive battle royale-style map to see that it does more than just look like a beautifully modeled and animated computer action game you’ve might be familiar with, but it combines elements of many games from many genres to create a battle royale that is wholly unique, with a surprising amount to learn and do in each session outside of surviving against other teams. Clashes against enemies are frantic thanks to the big emphasis on fast and varied styles of movement and cleverly designed characters with abilities that interact with each other and...
It’s been six long years since the last Soul Calibur game, 2018’s Soulcalibur 6, and fans haven’t heard a peep out of Bandai Namco about a sequel. With Tekken seemingly the focus of the publisher’s fighting game ambition, the once-great Soul Calibur appears to have fallen by the wayside. But why? In a remarkably frank tweet, Tekken chief Katsuhiro Harada pointed the finger at a number of factors, including Bandai Namco itself. Harada responded to a tweet from a user who claimed that if Soul Calibur 2 had a director like Harada himself, then sales of that game and the series would have grown over time. The user even pointed to mechanics in the older Soul Calibur games that were ditched for more recent entries as a reason for the...
There aren't that many arcade shooter series left, folks. They've started to vanish, along with the middle-tier game developer and the dodo. There is, however, Earth Defense Force, the unapologetically arcade-y shooter that puts you and maybe some friends up against unending hordes of giant insects, alien invaders, robots, flying saucers, and extra-large kaiju in a battle to mow down the enemies of Earth no matter how many blocky collapsible buildings get leveled in the process. Yes, this year will see the international debut of Earth Defense Force 6, a game which series fans in the West have long awaited after its 2022 Japanese release. At five years since EDF5, I'm happy to say that after spending plenty of time with a pre-release...

Velan Studios, makers of Knockout City, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, and Hot Wheels Rift Rally, has announced Midnight Murder Club, a new six-player first-person hide-and-seek multiplayer party game where all you'll have in order to survive against other players are a flashlight, a revolver, and your wits. It's due out on PC via Steam in Fall 2024. Midnight Murder Club is planning four game modes for launch: a traditional Deathmatch (in regular or 2v2v2 team variants); Free For All, which values deadliness above all else; Hunter/Hunted, in which two players become Hunters and try to prevent the rest from locating and burning four hidden effigies; and Thief in the Night, where teams of two try to steal more valuables than the other...

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is finally out, and with it comes a whole lot of new bosses to terrorize you. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki himself says some of the bosses in Shadow of the Erdtree were designed to push players to their very limit, and after finishing the DLC, we’re inclined to agree. So of course we decided to rank all of the new bosses in Shadow of the Erdtree, from least difficult to most. One important caveat is that there are way more bosses than the ones we’ve listed here in the DLC. However, we’ve decided to just rank the main bosses – the ones that drop Remembrances you can then take to exchange for legendary gear and weapons. And of course, this is one of the most spoiler-filled lists we have for Shadow of the...
Square Enix has released the preliminary patch notes for Final Fantasy 14's highly anticipated Patch 7.0, which will arrive soon alongside the Dawntrail expansion. Revealed on its website, the incredibly long patch notes outline everything changing in the massively multiplayer online game and, interestingly, what isn't changing yet. Square Enix said the new raid, the Arcadion, will arrive with Patch 7.01, while the Savage version and the Cenote Ja Ja Gural treasure hunt will arrive with Patch 7.05. The update still adds plenty of new content, of course, including new areas, quests, quality-of-life improvement, a huge graphical upgrade, the Viper and Pictomancer jobs, plenty of raids and dungeons, and much more. Square Enix...
Last week, the satirical video game website Hard Drive posted an article reporting on the fictional uproar created by the introduction of a mandatory (and fake) Stardew Valley update, which cruelly deleted players save data the moment that they the opened up the game’s Wiki. Now, one enthusiastic modder has taken the joke to the next level and designed a very unofficial add-on for the game that does just that, though thankfully the real version of the ‘hardcore mode’ is entirely optional. The mod was posted to Github by self-described software engineer and system administrator ‘lostkagamine’, and seemingly follows Hard Drive’s joke to the letter. As reported by GamesRadar, the mod works by scanning every window on a player's computer...
Sega is allegedly developing a remake of the original Jet Set Radio as a separate project to the officially announced franchise reboot, as screenshots and footage have appeared online. It's unclear if the leaks are genuine, but X/Twitter user @MSKAZZY69 shared four images of the alleged reboot, sourcing previously reliable Sega leaker Midori — though they were exposed to be a leaker called MysticDistance pretending to be someone else when they claimed to give up leaking information earlier in June 2024. The source of the screenshots are therefore hazy, as is a 32-second gameplay video which appears unlisted on YouTube channel @CrimsonMk3, but both show what looks like an updated version of the beloved Jet Set Radio. IGN has asked...
The developer of Palworld has said Nintendo is yet to make a complaint after The Pokémon Company said it intended to investigate amid the “Pokémon rip-off” claims earlier this year. Palworld, dubbed ‘Pokémon with Guns,’ launched in early access form in January 2024 on PC via Steam and on Xbox as a day-one Game Pass title. It saw enormous popularity overnight, becoming one of the biggest game launches of all time. But it’s also one of the most controversial. Developer Pocketpair has said its staff has received death threats amid the Pokémon "rip-off" claims, which it has denied. Soon after Palworld’s launch Nintendo moved quickly to remove an eye-catching Pokémon mod, then The Pokemon Company issued a statement, saying: "We intend to...
This week the showrunners of Prime Video’s Fallout TV show confirmed Robert House “will be involved” in Season 2, cementing the appearance of a major Fallout New Vegas character after a pre-war cameo in Season 1. Warning: Spoilers for Fallout Season 1 and Fallout New Vegas follow. Given the Fallout TV show is set after all the Fallout games and is considered canon, the confirmation of Mr. House’s appearance in Season 2 has sparked all sorts of fan theories about how he’ll make his live-action appearance, and what it means for Obsidian’s much-loved New Vegas itself. First, some background. Robert House appears in New Vegas as Mr. House. He rules New Vegas as a brain plugged into a supercomputer that has extended his existence from...
Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead has issued a new patch for the PC and PlayStation 5 co-op shooter that fixes the Spear after a previous update caused crash problems. Last week’s update 1.000.402 included a fix for the Spear not targeting several entities (spawners, compound objects, etc). This change was welcomed by fans because, it was hoped, it would finally make the Spear weapon more reliable out on the battlefield. However, players soon found that the Spear, the very weapon Arrowhead had sought to fix, caused crashes, resulting in a fresh recommendation not to use it. Now, patch 01.000.403 includes a fix for Spear-related crashes. Fingers crossed that’s now the end of the Spear’s tumultuous time in Helldivers 2. Elsewhere...
