Over the last decade, Final Fantasy 14 has transformed from a failure to one of the most-played multiplayer games in the entire world. A huge part of that success is how FF14 has broken the mold of MMOs, striking out in new ways that have clearly attracted millions of players. Over a decade after the relaunch of A Realm Reborn, FF14 shows no signs of stopping, and if you find yourself tired of the usual MMO fare, it might be the right choice for you.
With a huge main game and multiple expansions starting FF14 might seem like a daunting task, but so much of what the game does differently revolves around attracting new players, or those wholly unfamiliar with the genre. Here are some of the major ways FF14 differs from other MMOs.

Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, and more "gone but not forgotten" video game studios were honored by a Los Angeles billboard ahead of this week's major summer showcases.
Spotted by Stephen Totilo on X/Twitter, the electronic billboard was created by publisher New Blood Interactive in the wake of brutal industry lay-offs and studio closures.
"Gone but not forgotten," the billboard reads, before listing affected studios and their 2024 closing dates: Arkane Austin, Roll7, Tango Gameworks, Volition, and Sony's London Studio. It also shouts out "everyone laid off, downsized, and made redundant."
"Thank you for your great games from your friends at New Blood," it added. "We love you. We mss you. We hate money."

An announcement for Civilization 7 appears imminent after an image for the game was spotted on 2K Games’ official website.
As spotted by users on ResetEra and Reddit, the banner for the unannounced strategy sequel was briefly available on the 2K website homepage and even pointed to a currently non-existent trailer and Steam page for wishlisting before it was removed. The leak suggests an announcement at Summer Game Fest today, June 7. 2K is yet to comment.
In May, Summer Game Fest said 2K Games would reveal the "next iteration in one of its biggest and most beloved franchises" during the show. The tease instantly got fans speculating on the possibilities, with many wondering whether BioShock 4 would finally be revealed after a five...

What now for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League? The live service shooter flopped to the tune of $200 million upon its launch earlier this year, and ever since players have wondered just how long support would last.
Following a Bloomberg report into the development of the game, the author of that report, Jason Schreier, has tweeted to say Rocksteady is now providing “some barebones support, definitely not as much as they’d originally planned.”
That’s a worry for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s small but loyal fanbase, which is made up of fans who continue to play the game despite its failings. And it calls into question how long publisher Warner Bros. will have Rocksteady devote resources to the game.

Amazon’s MMO New World looks set to hit consoles after the game was spotted on the PlayStation Store.
Redditor OMG_R3A11Y saw New World appear on their console's PlayStation Store and published a screenshot before the listing was apparently removed.
New World launched in 2021 on Steam and became a rare video game hit for Amazon. The free-to-play MMO set in an alternate 1600s America saw huge concurrent player numbers on Steam, and is currently the eighth most-played game on Valve’s platform all-time with a whopping 913,634 peak concurrents. Player numbers have declined since that peak, however, with Steam concurrents hovering around the 10,000 mark in recent weeks.
A console release would certainly provide a boost, and a...

Thank your own personal deity—possibly Chthon—it's Friday! The best deals are speaking for themselves today. The criminally underplayed and underloved Marvel's Midnight Suns can be yours for zero dollars at all. I say play it, love it, and then send Firaxis the coin they deserve by buying the highly amusing Deadpool DLC. Beyond that, stay safe, save often, and see you Monday.

Last week, Sonic X Shadow Generations was rumored to be making an appearance at Summer Game Fest. Now, just one day before SGF kicks off, a few key details about the game itself have also been leaked.
Today, the release date and box art of Sonic X Shadow Generations were apparently confirmed by insider Billbil-kun via a Dealabs article. According to the leaks, the game is slated for release on all consoles on October 25, with physical copies costing $49.99.
Leaker MysteryLupin also posted apparent screenshots from the game, which show Sonic and Shadow in both remastered and entirely new levels, as well as more of the game's promotional art on Twitter/X. More leaked promotional art shows off available in-game rewards, including a...
Knights of the Old Republic has been an object of fascination for Star Wars fans ever since its debut two decades ago. Disney has hinted that the KOTOR era, which takes place thousands of years before the original movie, could be a major movie setting in the future, but it has otherwise remainly mostly untouched by the broader franchise.
Count The Acolyte showrunner Leslye Headland among those intrigued by the possibilities of KOTOR, which was centered around the conflicts between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire. Speaking with the Omelete in an interview translated by IGN, Headland said she was particularly interested in Kreia, one of the major characters from KOTOR 2.
"I've always wanted to explore a live-action version of...
Developer Player First Games has released a new patch for its free-to-play fighting game MultiVersus. The patch includes various fixes and improvements, along with details about how the Iron Giant will be nerfed when he returns.
As noted in a new blog post, the MultiVersus 1.01 patch notes first mention that Iron Gaint is still unplayable after the developer previously pulled the character from the roster. They also note that a status update will be shared sometime next week.
The Iron Giant was removed from the MultiVersus character roster after complaints that he was overpowered and was causing an unfair advantage. The patch notes mention that this next update should add changes that will "prevent Iron Giant from chaining certain...
Survival games like DayZ or Rust remain hard to beat, but Duckside presents an interesting challenger. Developed by tinyBuild Riga in Unreal Engine 5 with producers from Hello Neighbor, Duckside is a new persistent open-world survival game where ducks have become combat-trained. Taking the fight to both humans and fellow mallards, I recently went hands-on with the beta. So far, it's a quacking good time.
I respect that Duckside doesn't justify its unusual premise. There are currently no flimsy narratives or ridiculous origin stories explaining why ducks can suddenly wield weapons or craft tools. All we know is that they've become tired of being hunted and began fighting for freedom. Unfortunately, these new birds of prey can't shake...
Microsoft is reportedly working on a remaster of Halo: Combat Evolved, and there are suggestions that it may also come to PS5 in addition to Xbox.
In a new report by The Verge, Tom Warren writes in his Notepad newsletter that Halo is "one game" being considered for release on Sony's console. Warren notes that it is in "early days" of development, so it is very unlikely that Microsoft will announce this project during this Sunday's Xbox Games Showcase.
Halo: Combat Evolved was developed by Bungie and initially released in 2001 as a launch game for the original Xbox gaming system. The project was the first in what would become one of Microsoft's flagship first-party IPs that has seen at least one game released on an Xbox platform...
More details have emerged about this coming Sunday's Xbox Showcase, including news on two major reported reveals.
Tom Warren's Notepad newsletter reported today that two big first-party tentpoles will be announced during the livestream: a new Doom installment, as well as Gears of War 6.
To be clear, it had already been reported that a new Doom game would be revealed at the showcase with the title Doom: The Dark Ages, a name that Warren's reporting also backs up. But the interesting bit of news here is that, according to the newsletter, Doom: The Dark Ages has "been earmarked as a Project Latitude game to launch simultaneously on PS5 in 2025."
The so-called "Project Latitude" is reportedly the internal name for Xbox's continuing...
Yooka-Laylee, the Banjo-Kazooie spiritual successor developed by former Rare developers, is getting a surprise remaster for PC and consoles.
Developer Playtonic Games said the 2017 3D platformer will re-release with a visual overhaul, new controls, and camera system, as well as new challenges and secrets. The game also has a new name: Yooka-Replaylee.
Yooka-Laylee released on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in April 2017, with a Nintendo Switch version following in December 2017. IGN’s Yooka-Laylee review returned a 7/10. We said: “Yooka-Laylee is a good reminder that this genre, once thought to be dead, still has some life left in it.”
Yooka-Replaylee is the result of the growth of Playtonic over recent years, it said, and “the...
Cyberpunk 2077 never received a New Game Plus mode like CD Projekt's predecessor The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt because it would "break the way the game is constructed."
Speaking to DualShockers, Cyberpunk 2077 quest director and its sequel's associate game director Paweł Sasko gave a somewhat vague explanation for why the now beloved role-playing game didn't receive New Game Plus in its more than three years of updates.
"For us, it’s really important that when you have components in a game, they all work together and they all work well and they all make sense," Sasko said. "The thing is, Cyberpunk is very specific when it comes to its construction.
"It’s incredibly difficult to figure out a way where New Game Plus could be done in a way...

Yesterday, we exclusively announced that developer 11 Bit Studios will soon be dropping a playable demo of The Alters, the team's alluring and unique new survival game. Today you can check out 14 minutes of gameplay from that demo in the video above, and then play the demo for yourself on Steam on June 10 until June 17.
So what is The Alters? Well, we encourage you to watch our recent hands-on preview below, but in short, you play as Jans. But not just one Jans. Lots of Jans. See, you're a miner on a hostile planet who must pull in versions of yourself from other realities in order to survive. But they're not mere clones. Rather, they're you but they've lived their own completely unique lives, and as such they'll bring different...
Concord’s $39.99 price point “provides the full experience,” Sony has said.
Following Concord's divisive reveal during Sony's State of Play showcase in May, some had wondered whether the live service hero shooter would release in free-to-play form.
Confirming Concord launches in both physical and digital standard editions for $39.99 / £34.99 / €39.99, Pam Piscitello, director of marketing and operations at developer Firewalk, said in a post on the PlayStation Blog that this full experience includes all 16 playable characters (called Freegunners in-game), 12 maps set on various worlds, and six team-based modes.
This will expand shortly after launch with regular, post-launch updates for all players at no additional cost, Piscitello...
Sony will announce LEGO Horizon Adventures for PlayStation 5 and PC this week during Summer Game Fest, according to a new report.
Dealabs’ reliable leaker Billbil-kun, who this week also reported that Sony has a PC version of The Last of Us 2 up its sleeve, said LEGO Horizon Adventures will see a simultaneous release on PS5 and PC. It’s described as an action adventure game with solo and cross-platform co-op gameplay.
An announcement is reportedly set for June 8 CET, which coincides with the June 7 PT kick-off of Summer Game Fest. A gameplay trailer is expected, but so far there is no word on a release date.
A simultaneous release on PS5 and PC for LEGO Horizon Adventures would follow the same strategy Sony employed for smash hit...
With the PlayStation State of Play done, Nintendo and Xbox still have yet to show their hand during this summer of gaming. Next up, Microsoft kicks off its Xbox Games Showcase on June 8, followed immediately after by a big reveal for the next Call of Duty. While we already know the next Call of Duty is set to be Black Ops 6, there’s plenty from the main show that remains a mystery and rife for speculation.
It feels like every year is a make-or-break year for Xbox and, well, this year is make-or-break for Xbox. With the dust from the Activision Blizzard acquisition settling down but closures of high-profile studios like Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin still fresh in everyone’s minds, it’s a summer for Xbox to find its center, take a...
A Counter-Strike 2 weapon skin, meaning a variant color and pattern for an in-game gun, has sold for more than $1 million of real world money.
CS:GO, now Counter-Strike 2, lets players earn Weapon Cases (loot boxes) through gameplay or by purchasing them in the store, but each also requires a corresponding key to open it. These can, again, be earned through gameplay or purchased in the store.
The competitive first-person shooter is free to play but has an extensive economy surrounding the contents of these loot boxes: weapon skins. Players can buy, trade, and sell them to each other, and the rarer pieces have sold in the past for hundreds, thousands, and even hundreds of thousands of dollars.
As reported by Kotaku, the StatTrak...
Microsoft has confirmed the first wave of games coming to Xbox Game Pass in June 2024. Highlights include today’s surprise shadow drop of Square Enix’s Octopath Traveler series, The Callisto Protocol, and Still Wakes the Deep.
First up are the aforementioned Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2. Octopath Traveler (Cloud, Console, and PC) returns to the Game Pass library today, June 6, whereas Octopath Traveler 2 (Cloud, PC, and Xbox Series X|S) launches on Xbox and Game Pass for the first time having released on other platforms last year, alongside a new update.
IGN's Octopath Traveler review returned a 9.3. We said: "Octopath Traveler's beautiful style and outstanding take on traditional turn-based combat make it a game that...
Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead has revealed the game’s next Premium Warbond, dubbed Viper Commandos and due out June 13.
In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Katherine Baskin, social media and community manager at Arrowhead, said the studio had responded to feedback on Helldivers 2’s Warbonds and had changed its approach as a result. For a start, Arrowhead has slowed down the pace at which it releases Warbonds “to give us a little bit more time to polish these designs before they’re released.” Baskin continued: “We don’t want to rush anything out of the oven before it’s fully baked.”
“It’s time to focus on quality over quantity.
Arrowhead has also changed the arrangement of items in each Warbond to make room for new item types as...
A report into the making of $200 million flop Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has shed new light on Rocksteady’s troubled release as well as what’s next for the studio.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was panned by critics upon launch and had extremely low player numbers on Steam. Some of the frustration stemmed from Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League not being another Batman game from Rocksteady, despite it being set within the same Arkhamverse.
The developer’s single player Batman Arkham series is much-loved by fans, with 2011’s Batman: Arkham City in particular held up as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, superhero video games of all time. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, on the other hand, is a...

Square Enix has made the Octopath Traveler series available on all console platforms as well as Xbox Game Pass as part of a multi-pronged shadow-drop.
Octopath Traveler, first released on Nintendo Switch in 2018, is now available to buy on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 for the first time. Octopath Traveler 2, which launched on Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC in 2023, is now available for the first time on Xbox Series X and S and Xbox One, including launching straight into subscription service Xbox Game Pass. Both Octopath Traveler games are now in the Game Pass library across Xbox and PC.
Octopath Traveler is a well-received role-playing series with a unique HD-2D art style, with 2D characters in 3D worlds. Both games are a standalone...
If you're anything like me, The Acolyte has got you amped up to go shred people, places, and things with a lightsaber again. The good news: Jedi Survivor has had 60% cleaved off and it's wall-to-wall laser swords. Alternatively, I have also found the cheapest deals on Star Wars Outlaws which...er, doesn't seem to include one single lightsaber in it. Shades of Dark Forces that I'm keen to preview soon.
In retro news, I'm celebrating the 21st birthday of WarioWare Inc., the Game Boy Advance grandaddy of a beloved microgames empire. Along with absurd tasks like picking one's nose skillfully or shooting a bidet sprayer at a starfish-shaped something, I recall being delighted with the snippets from NES classics and this weirdly addictive...
