Though this is a place of daily deals—the polar opposite of exorbitant prices—let's talk about the (suspected Australian) pricing of the new 30th anniversary range of PS5 products. A known and legit leaker at Dealabs Magazine has divulged some US prices, which allows us to extrapolate. TL;DR: the 30th DualSense should be A$125, and the PS5 Slim Digital console ought to be A$780-$800. The PS5 Pro Bundle isn't mentioned, making this next statement an even bigger guesstimate: probably A$1700+. In retro news, I'm celebrating the 32nd birthday of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, a true RPG classic. I co-played this around launch with my SNES-owning neighbour, and it was an all-consuming experience—tense dungeon crawling/puzzling...
X/Twitter will have to comply with a subpeona regarding the identities of several Genshin Impact leaker accounts after a federal judge ruled against the social media platform's attempt to throw it out. The news comes from Torrent Freak and Stephen Totilo's Game File newsletter, detailing the latest in miHoYo's crackdown on leakers. Cognosphere, the miHoYo-owned publisher of Genshin Impact, filed the subpeona last fall, attempting to force X Corp. to “disclose the identity, including the name(s), address(es), telephone number(s), and e-mail addresses(es)” behind four popular leaker accounts: @HutaoLoverGI, @GIHutaoLover, @HutaoLover77, and @FurinaaLover. As Totilo notes, three of the accounts are currently suspended. The only one...

Ara: History Untold is the latest in a procession of turn-based 4X games trying to settle on the once-sovereign territory of Sid Meier's Civilization, and it's one of the more competent challengers to do so. The liveliness and detail of its animated towns and cities never fail to delight me – as a historical ant farm, at least. But it expects more of us as a world leader than Civ ever has, and doesn't really provide us with the tools to make it truly feel good to be the king. On a basic level, Ara doesn't have a vastly different view of history from its 4X forebears. Starting from roughly Neolithic times, you race down a tech tree split up into three acts of four ages each along a familiar and narrow path based mostly on Europe and...
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is set to release for Xbox Series X|S and PC on November 19. The biggest new addition in this installment is a career mode, which lets you create a character and start working from any airport in the world. All told, Flight Sim 2024 comes in two physical editions and four digital editions this time around (see it at Amazon). Read on for full details about what comes in each, as well as pricing. One quick note before we dive in: Below, you'll find the number of aircraft and airports that are included in each edition. To see specifically which aircrafts are included, check out this image from the...
Sega has announced that it'll host the fourth annual Sonic Central presentation tomorrow, giving fans a glimpse into some of what's to come in the Sonic the Hedgehog world. The presentation will take place at 9 a.m. PT/12 p.m. ET on Tuesday, September 24. Sega didn't reveal specifics of what will be shown outside of "a sneak peek of some of our upcoming projects, partnerships, and events happening through 2025." It should mark a busy day for gaming news, as Sony also just announced the latest State of Play for later on Tuesday. As for what could be at the Sonic Central, Sega could always announce new projects, but there are a few things on the docket that we already know about. The most immediate is the impending release of Sonic x...
Henry Cavill, the world’s most famous Warhammer 40,000 fan, is like so many others enjoying the recently released Space Marine 2. In an Instagram post, the Superman and Witcher star praised the developers at Saber Interactive for the action game set in Games Workshop’s grimdark universe, although revealed he failed to complete the campaign solo on the Angel of Death difficulty, which is the hardest of the four difficulties available. As we can see from the photo, Cavill is currently big into Space Marine 2’s PvP mode, dubbed Eternal War. We can see him matchmaking on the PC version of the game, although the actor was smart enough to paste over his username with the word “nope.” Yes, that means you could be playing with or against...
A Baldur's Gate 3 mod removes the role-playing game's traditional Dungeons & Dragons turn-based combat in favor of more action-orientated real-time battles. PC Gamer spotted the work-in-progress mod from tinybike on YouTube, and described it as a "very very very rough draft." It does what it says on the tin though, letting players run into Baldur's Gate 3 combat and cast spells as quick as their fingers will allow, instead of having to wait their turn. The video shows tinybike exploring the ruins found early in Act 1 of Baldur's Gate 3 and immediately being rushed by the agitated enemy who awaits. But they, alongside the handful of other baddies exploring the ruins, are quickly taken down with a selection of speedy spells. Baldur's...
If you’ve played Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, you’ll no doubt remember the Chimera. It’s a hulking, spider-like tank that chases you relentlessly, destroying every piece of the building around you before trapping you in a one-on-one battle. It's the biggest boss fight in the whole game, and was a monumentally complex sequence for developer CD Projekt Red to create. So, how was this intricate multistage mission put together? We spoke to multiple developers from across several different departments to find out what the joys and complications were. This is how Phantom Liberty’s Chimera encounter was built, from concept to controller. The thoroughly elaborate design process for the Chimera started with the most simple of...
The original Resident Evil 3 hits CD Projekt Red-owned GOG on September 25, 2024. A post on the platform from GOG itself and publisher Capcom revealed the release comes not long after the original Resident Evil 2 arrived on the platform, much like how the pair of games first launched. "Capcom's Resident Evil series has defined and revolutionized the survival horror genre, with the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3 being standout titles that have captivated gamers worldwide," the post said. "Now, it’s time to complete the trilogy. "Just like with Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2, we made sure GOG's version of the third entry in the series is the best it can be. You can expect a variety of quality of life...
Minecraft players have built a staggering recreation of New York City in 1:1 scale. Showcased in a Reddit post from d3_cent, below, the build includes iconic locations such as the Brooklyn Bridge, Battery Park, and more. The build is four years in the works and, despite its incredible size, d3_cent said only around 68% of lower Manhattan is complete. It's taken so long because "it's exact," they said. "Every building has been manually recreated, [with] the right amount of windows, correct window detailing, trash cans where they are in real life, road signs, stop signs, everything." Beyond these examples, the team is also making accurate subway systems underground and even the depth of water surrounding Manhattan is accurate. The...
Beloved YouTuber Shirley Curry, colloquially known as the Skyrim Grandma, has announced her retirement from making gameplay videos after doing so for nine years. A YouTube video announcing her retirement aged 88 has an appropriate 8,800 upvotes on Reddit, where fans of her content thanked her for making videos for so many years and crossed their fingers for a return when The Elder Scrolls 6 finally comes out. Curry said she won't be making gameplay videos anymore simply because she no longer enjoys it, but isn't quitting YouTube altogether. She'll continue posting vlogs once in a while and may occasionally do reading videos of the books in Skyrim or even her own stories. "I'm just doing it for fun and it isn't fun anymore," Curry...
Steam has once again broken its record for the most PC players online, this time hitting an incredible 38,366,479 concurrents. That figure, achieved on September 22, 2024, is a million concurrent players higher than the previous record set last month, which was fueled by the release of smash hit Black Myth: Wukong. So, what helped propel Steam to new heights over the weekend? All the usual suspects were in the top 10 most-played games on Valve’s platform, including Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, Banana (yes, Banana has yet to split), and PUBG, with this year’s Black Myth: Wukong, Satisfactory 1.0, Space Marine 2, and Valve’s own Deadlock putting in work. Last week saw PlayStation exclusives God of War Ragnarok and Final Fantasy 16 both...
Stardew Valley developer Eric Barone, aka ConcernedApe, has finally announced the hotly anticipated release date for update 1.6 on console and mobile. The developer behind the 30 million-selling farm life simulation game said in a tweet that 1.6 hits console and mobile on November 4, 2024. That’s for all console and mobile versions of the game, including the Nintendo Switch version, and includes the 1.6.9 update. In a follow-up tweet, ConcernedApe said that following the release of 1.6, console and mobile players can still experience almost everything new with their existing save, “but if you have any interest in starting a new farm it would be ideal to start fresh.” “Some of the new things, for example, are different in year one...
The success of breakout hit Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 ‘changes everything’ for developer Saber Interactive, it’s said. Speaking exclusively to IGN as part of a sweeping post-launch interview just over two weeks after Space Marine 2’s record-breaking launch, Saber Interactive Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits said the success of the game would even positively affect its future projects. While neither Saber nor publisher Focus Entertainment have announced a sales figure for Space Marine 2, Focus has confirmed over two million played at launch. In fact, Space Marine 2 is the most-played Warhammer video game of any type ever released on Steam, with 225,690 peak concurrent players on Valve’s platform. Willits won't go into hard...
Black Myth: Wukong developer Game Science has released a new update for the record-breaking action game that makes a number of balance changes and fixes bugs. Black Myth: Wukong update 1.0.9.15179, which weighs in at approximately 1.7GB, may cause problems with installed mods, Game Science warned in a post on Steam. “We recommend uninstalling the installed mods and verifying the integrity of the game files before restarting the game,” the developer added. The patch notes are below. Earlier this month, Game Science investor Hero Games confirmed plans to release an Elden Ring-style expansion for Black Myth: Wukong ahead of any sequel. It sold an eye-watering 18 million copies in just two weeks across PC and PlayStation 5, making over...
Welcome back to another week on the trail of discounts, fellow bargain hunters. Aside from the correlative pattern of a few crazy cheap LEGO titles, I'm not really going with a definite theme today. It's just one big scattershot of pleasingly reduced prices on games and peripherals actually worth owning. So dive in and randomly save on unrelated bargains. In retro news, I'm using Flamethrower on 20 birthday cake candles for Pokémon FireRed / LeafGreen, and it's super-effective! Feels like only yesterday when I slapped this Gen III Red / Blue remake into my GBA and went capturing unsuspecting Kanto critters for the purposes of wanton cockfighting. My fondest memories of these games reside in the added Sevii Islands area, which hid...
Last week, Bloomberg reported that 25 people comprising the entire staff of Annapurna Interactive walked out the door in a group resignation. But while some of the circumstances around their departure emerged in the reporting, one pressing question was left unanswered: why? Having spoken to multiple individuals close to the situation who requested anonymity due to fear of reprisal, as well as an Annapurna spokesperson, IGN has pieced together a somewhat complex answer. Disagreements over the direction of the Interactive division, chaotic departures, communication breakdowns, and a perceived lack of leadership transparency at Annapurna Interactive led to a staff walk-out that has left 25 individuals jobless, Annapurna leaders...
Note: These impressions are based on my early experiences with EA Sports FC 25. So far, the focus has been on core gameplay in Career and Rush modes, but I’ll explore how the changes impact Ultimate Team and other online modes after spending more time with them. Every year, I start with the same overly optimistic questions: What has actually changed in FIFA—sorry, EA Sports FC—this time around? Is it really new, or just the same old experience with a fresh coat of paint? There’s always a laundry list of flashy new marketing terms designed to grab attention: Hypermotion V, FC IQ, BallTouch, Rush, etc (okay one of those is made up). Yet, even with all the buzzwords, there’s often a lingering feeling that these changes are merely...
There’s a very specific sub-section of gamers out there that live for efficiency above all else, not least when it comes to their games. We don’t mean playing games quickly or speedrunning, well not in this case at least, but it means that the simple joy they get from correctly automating a process in a […] Continue reading...
God of War Ragnarök has a ‘mixed’ user review rating on Steam following its PC launch, with most of the complaints revolving around Sony’s controversial PlayStation Network Account requirement. Sony had made it clear on the God of War Ragnarök Steam page that a PlayStation Network account would be required to play Sony Santa Monica’s purely single-player adventure, but that doesn’t seem to have prevented a number of negative reviews singling out the policy. One negative Steam review, from a user who refunded the game after just 20 minutes of play, called out the PSN requirement. “Creating a PSN account was something I knew was necessary in advance and I was prepared to do so, until I was met with the reality of it,” they said. “For...
Following Sony’s shock decision to haul live service hero shooter Concord offline two weeks after launch, its game director has reportedly stepped down with some staff concerned about the future of the studio. Kotaku reports that Ryan Ellis, who has served as Concord’s game director since January 2018, has told staff he has stepped down from the role and into a support function. Ellis’ name was attached to the statement published on the PlayStation Blog that announced Concord would be taken offline. Ellis said that "while many qualities of the experience resonated with players, we also recognize that other aspects of the game and our initial launch didn’t land the way we’d intended." Concord is one of the biggest video game...
What are the seemingly dead PlayStation series that need to make a comeback? Cardy, Matt, and Mat pick three each that they'd love to see new games from. Before that, though, there are some very early impressions of The Plucky Squire, as well as far too much talk about Lidl and giant crisps. The Silent Hill 2 remake is console exclusive to PlayStation 5 for one year, Sony has revealed. As spotted by Eurogamer, a new trailer released on the PlayStation YouTube channel shows Bloober’s long-awaited remake won’t launch on “other formats” until October 8, 2025 at the earliest. Silent Hill 2 launches on PC and PS5 on October 8, 2024. While “other formats” is a vague phrase, it no doubt includes Xbox consoles (Xbox Series X and S) and, potentially, Nintendo’s next-generation console, dubbed Switch 2. The Silent Hill 2 remake will of course be playable on the upcoming PS5 Pro, which launches on November 7. Sony’s partnership with Konami for Silent Hill 2 has not only resulted in a year-long console exclusivity, but full...
Sony has issued a fresh patch for the PlayStation 5 that will hopefully sort out graphics problems caused by the recently released firmware update. Firmware update 24.06-10.00.00., which added the Welcome Hub to PS5 among other new features, caused technical issues in Square Enix's Final Fantasy 16. Myriad users reported issues including entire portions of the screen being overcome with black squares and crashing when loading a save file or fast traveling. Similar bugs appeared in Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws, Hello Games' No Man's Sky, Kojima Productions' Death Stranding, and other games. At the time, Square Enix confirmed it was working with Sony to address the issues introduced through the firmware update, saying: "Following the...
The next Yakuza game is about series wild card Goro Majima fighting pirates and is called Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and Sega revealed at the September 2024 RGG Summit. The game will seemingly see Majima hunt down a lost treasure and perhaps even features ship combat in a half Yakuza, half Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag looking entry. It launches February 28, 2025.. A lengthy reveal trailer showed Majima washed up on the beach of Rich Island, near Hawaii, looking worse for wear and helped by a child with a pet tiger. Majima introduced the clip himself as a story taking place six months prior, asking how the heck he ended up on a beach. It looks to directly feed off the story of Like a Dragon...
Following Nintendo and The Pokémon Company’s shock patent lawsuit against Palworld developer Pocketpair, and Pocketpair’s subsequent statement claiming it had no idea which patents it’s accused of infringing, analysts believe they’ve worked out which patent Nintendo plans to use to win its case. Kiyoshi Kurihara, a Japanese patent attorney and consultant on intellectual property spoke to Yahoo Japan on the lawsuit (translated by Automaton), and pointed to a “killer patent” that revolves around the mechanic of catching Pokémon itself. “It seems like it would be hard to avoid if you want to make a Pokémon-like game, and it’s easy to infringe if you’re not careful,” Kurihara is quoted as saying. In general gameplay terms, Palworld’s...

Thank your own personal deity—possibly Odin—it's Freyaday! Uh, I mean, Friday. That wordplay is topical, thanks to God of War Ragnarok launching on PC this morning. I've already put a bunch of hours into Valhalla mode, and it looks and plays phenomenally well. Discounts on it, and a bunch of other worthy purchases, await you below, my friend. Stay safe, save often, and see you Monday! In retro news, I'm breaking out the fairy bread Jill sandwiches for the 22nd birthday of Resident Evil [remake] on GameCube. One of the first reduxings of its kind, this set the bar for what the modernisation of a game ought to be. I day-one adored it for a bunghole puckering One Dangerous Zombie mode, which only unlocked after clocking it twice with...
