Warning: This piece contains full spoilers for The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II. The Last of Us is part of an ongoing craze of faithful video game adaptations with roots traceable all the way back to the original Silent Hill film. However, adapting a game like The Last of Us Part II is a bit different from adapting its predecessor, not just because it has a more complicated, fractured narrative, but also because it’s a (phenomenal) game with much more dramatic meat to explore, both in terms of sheer length and in the thornier dimensions it mines from its characters. To make a show that stands up to its inspiration, it most likely will have to make some major deviations from the source material. While diehard fans may cry...
Explaining – and Fixing – IGN's Face-Off Controversy
Over the past few days you might’ve caught wind of some controversy stemming from IGN’s community game of the year Face-Off. It’s become a full-on drama, complete with literal ups and downs, shocking twists, and accusations of foul play flying. There’s also quite a bit of confusion, so to clear it up a bit I’m going to walk you through how we got here, and how we’re making it right. Early this year IGN rolled out a new version of our Face-Off tool, and it’s become a pet project of mine to use it to get our community to create ranked lists of games, movies, TV shows, and literally everything else that people have opinions about. It works by showing you two things and letting you pick whichever you think should win, whether that’s The...
In the trailer for Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, Yakuza fan-favorite Goro Majima wakes on a beach with his memory wiped. A kid with a tiger cub pal named Noah finds him, and before long, Majima finds himself beating up a pirate captain and taking over his ship (or so it’s implied.) I got my first hands-on with the latest in the Yakuza franchise, and I’d love to tell you about it. I played a short portion of Pirate Yakuza when Majima, Noah, and friends arrived in Infinite Wealth’s familiar locale of Honolulu, but this was very much constructed as a demo, so I can’t be certain of how similar the next series of events would be to the full game. First, a short combat tutorial on mechanics potentially unfamiliar to Infinite...

Hollywood, get ready for Hideo Kojima. The Death Stranding and Metal Gear creator sat down for a wide-ranging interview with Variety, published today, in which he talked about about the next steps of his career — and revealed a more direct tie to Hollywood. Kojima has signed with talent agency WME, which the publication describes as his "his liaison in the world of TV and film." He also went into detail about the future of Kojima Productions, breaking down his plan into three phases. The first phase, Kojima said, was all about Death Stranding and establishing it "within the games category and expand on global platforms, like Apple and PC and Sony." "This part is not necessarily difficult," he added. Part of that, of course, is the...
Ubisoft has unveiled the roadmap of what's to come over the next couple of months for Star Wars Outlaws, all leading up to its Steam release and first story pack in November. The roadmap, which you can see below, reveals that the next title update will come on October 3, focused on bug fixes and improvements. Update 3 will follow on October 24, featuring some quality of life improvements. But the big day will come a month later on November 21. As was confirmed earlier this week, Star Wars Outlaws will release on Steam on that date, which is the same day of the release of its first story pack. We already knew about that, but Ubisoft also revealed that Update 4 will arrive on November 21 too, featuring combat and stealth improvements...

Valve has updated its new multiplayer game Deadlock to let players turn cheaters into a frog. Deadlock is a hero shooter that’s like a mash-up of all Valve’s previous games, including Team Fortress 2, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike. It’s in early development, with Valve updating all the time, which leads us to this week’s changes. This week’s Deadlock patch added a novel anti-cheat measure: turning a cheater into an in-game frog. If you spot a cheater in-game, you can either ban them or transform them for the rest of the match. Here’s the note in the patch notes: Added an initial Anti-Cheat detection system. When a user is detected as cheating, during the game session the opponents will be given a choice between banning the user...
Nintendo and The Pokémon Company’s lawsuit against developer Pocketpair is evidence of the threat posed by Palworld, one patent expert has said. In an article on GamesIndustry.biz, intellectual property expert and associate at law firm MBHB Andrew Velzen argued that the shock lawsuit shows “just how seriously Nintendo views the threat of Palworld.” Last week, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Palworld developer Pocketpair in the Tokyo District Court. Pocketpair issued a statement in response claiming it had no idea which patents it’s accused of infringing, but experts have pointed to a “killer patent” that revolves around the mechanic of catching Pokémon itself. After Palworld’s huge launch...

Activision has been accused of “butchering” the playlists available for battle royale Warzone after developer Raven Software announced a consolidation ahead of the release of Black Ops 6. Warzone typically rotates different modes, squad sizes, and even maps every week, much to the annoyance of some fans who just want to play the battle royale in their favorite way, or with a specific number of friends. With Black Ops 6’s release just a few weeks away, Raven announced it’s making “preparations” for the future of Warzone. As part of that, has consolidated the current playlist selection into the following: • Battle Royale Solos & Quads • Resurgence Duos & Quads Plunder, Bootcamp, and active Limited-Time Modes will remain available...
Long before British developer Supermassive Games would scare the collective pants off of everybody with its Dark Pictures Anthology series, The Quarry and most recently its Dead by Daylight tie-in, The Casting of Frank Stone, it manifested Until Dawn into reality back in 2015. As we now sail past its ninth anniversary, Until Dawn is […] Continue reading...
A seemingly innocuous change made to Space Marine 2 as part of this week’s big Patch 3.0 has got Warhammer 40,000 lore fans excited about potentially huge implications for the game’s story and the wider setting itself. Warning! Huge spoilers for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 follow: Space Marine 2 patch 3.0, released yesterday, September 26, made a long list of welcome changes to the game, but one line in particular buried within the patch notes suggests the Emperor himself played a key role in the story all along. Pre-patch, during the climax of Space Marine 2, we see a cutscene in which protagonist Lieutenant Titus almost dies while destroying a Chaos artifact. He then hears a voice that says: "Rise, son of Guilliman."...
Blizzard is reportedly making a third attempt at developing a StarCraft shooter, with former Far Cry executive producer Dan Hay, who joined Blizzard in 2022, leading the charge. Hot on the heels of Microsoft’s announcement that StarCraft: Remastered and StarCraft 2: Campaign Collection hit the Game Pass subscription service in November, it has emerged that Blizzard is also working on a StarCraft shooter. Word comes from Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier while speaking to IGN’s Podcast Unlocked, below, about his new book, PLAY NICE: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment. Hay’s StarCraft shooter is mentioned in the book, and IGN’s Ryan McCaffrey asked Schreier if it’s likely to actually come out. “If it’s not...
Thank your own personal deity—possibly The Four Heavenly Kings—it's Friday! I'm not going to chew ears off this morning because there are some serious deals afoot. If you're after one of the best VR headsets ever made (and not one but two PCVR bundles to throw at it), then it's your lucky day. Likewise, if you don't have Pro budget liquidity but you need a PS5 console (and with a disc drive no less), now's your time to strike. Happy hunting. In retro news, I'm celebrating the 17th birthday of DS darling Sonic Rush Adventure. As a fan of the blue dude with the 'tude, I fondly remember SRA as a beacon of light and hope in dark times; it released in the wake of the brand-wounding 2006 reboot of Sonic the Hedgehog (IGN: 4.8). All in all...
Remember The Day Before, the once-hyped game that had such a disastrous early access launch that the Singapore-based studio that developed it, Fntastic, announced its closure just days later? Well, Fntastic appears to be back, and they're asking for a second chance — and your money. In yet another bizarre development to what was already a strange saga, the X/Twitter account for Fntastic resurfaced today, announcing a Kickstarter campaign and asking for "your help again to bring Fntastic back." The post links to a website which claims to lay out the details for Fntastic's next moves. If your first thought is that this whole thing could be a hoax, you'd be forgiven — and frankly, it very well could be. But if it is, it's a pretty...
While Obsidian Entertainment continues to work on Avowed ahead of its launch next year, studio design director Josh Sawyer has revealed that some members of the team have expressed interest in creating a Pillars of Eternity tactics game. The director behind projects like Pentiment, Fallout: New Vegas, and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire spoke about the studio’s desires behind the scenes during an interview with Limit Break Network. When asked about Obsidian’s interest in creating more stories set in Eora, he mentioned that a more tactical experience is one idea that at least a few members of the team have brought to the table. “There have been a number of people, actually, at the studio who have floated the idea of a Pillars tactics...

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Gets New Character Lawless Next Week
Rocksteady is adding Deadshot's daughter Zoe Lawton, supervillain alias Lawless, to Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League on October 1. The studio announced the new character in an X/Twitter post alongside word that Season 3 begins on the same day. Lawless is the daughter of Deadshot who has appeared in the lore of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League for a while, but only now confirmed as an official playable character. That being said, leaks from earlier this year revealed she would eventually be added to the game. The announcement will still come as welcome news to fans, of course, given the rocky nature of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. It launched in January 2024 as a live-service game featuring the likes of...
Visual Concepts has released the third patch for annual basketball game NBA 2K25 which fixes bugs and removes the magic t-shirt that accidentally gave players extra experience. An update to the NBA 2K25 website revealed the patch notes which open with an assurance that "a number of" issues in MyCareer and the City have now been fixed, including one bug that stopped players progressing to the offseason. Players who enjoyed a bizarre exploit for the first few weeks of NBA 2K25 being available will be disappointed to hear it's also been kicked, as Visual Concepts has "removed the 1.5x REP bonus that was erroneously attached to certain clothing items in MyCareer." The full patch notes are available below. NBA 2K25 arrived September 4...
Sony has doubled the price of PlayStation 4 game Horizon: Zero Dawn following the reveal of its PS5 remaster. Eurogamer spotted the price rise in the UK (from £15.99 to £34.99) but the price also rose in the U.S., jumping from $19.99 to $39.99 on the PlayStation Store. Horizon: Zero Dawn has been at the previous price point for years as part of the PlayStation Hits collection, and other entries such as God of War and The Last of Us Remastered have remained at the typical $19.99 price. The price rise comes just days after Sony announced a remaster of the seven-year-old game at its 2024 State of Play broadcast alongside a friendly $9.99 upgrade price for those who own it already. The game otherwise costs $49.99, so the price rise is...

A union has called for staff at Ubisoft’s French operation to strike over a return to office order and pay dispute. Le Syndicat des Travailleurs et Travailleuses du Jeu Vidéo (STJV), the French Video Game Workers Union, said Ubisoft management had imposed a return to office order for three days a week for all employees “without any tangible justification or any consultation with the workers' representatives.” “After more than five years of working efficiently in the current remote-work context, many of our colleagues have built or rebuilt their lives (family life, housing, parenthood, etc.) and simply cannot return to the previous working conditions,” the STJV continued. “Our employer knows this perfectly well. The consequence of...
A Cyberpunk 2077 mod turns the game into indie favorite Superhot, where time only moves when the player moves. Nexus Mods user jackexe shared the Cyberpunk Super Hot Mode mod, which adds a new element to the beloved sci-fi first person role-playing game. "When you move, time moves. How fast you move determines how fast time moves," the description reads. "You can use the Cyberpunk engine tweaks to bind the controls to toggle this mode on and off." Longtime fans looking for a new way to play Cyberpunk 2077 — on the one year anniversary of its one and only expansion Phantom Liberty launching — could perhaps find some entertainment here. Toggling in and out of the mode for certain battles seems like it would add some new intensity to...
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has its hotly anticipated September update, which adds some much-needed features to the game. Saber Interactive’s third-person action shooter launched to record-breaking success last month, but it lacked a number of crucial features including ultrawide support on PC and private PvE lobbies in Operations Mode. With patch 3.0, both of those features are now in the game, alongside a Sparring Arena for the Battlebarge and the option to replace custom presets with predefined ones. The new Sparring Arena in the Battle Barge is available while in Operations or Eternal War mode, and is accessible directly from the Launch Bay. Once there, you'll be given your weapons and grenades as if you were in a PvP...

Blizzard's sci-fi real-time strategy games are the latest from the company to launch into Game Pass following Microsoft's $69 billion aquisition of Activision Blizzard last year. While the entirety of the original StarCraft and StarCraft 2’s multiplayer components are free-to-play, StarCraft: Remastered and StarCraft 2: Campaign Collection will be available to anyone with a PC Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate subscription from November 5. 2017's StarCraft: Remastered is a remastered edition of Blizzard's 1998 RTS classic StarCraft and its expansion Brood War. It retains the gameplay...
Konami and Bloober Team will soon release their Silent Hill 2 remake for PlayStation 5 and Steam, but a PC almost didn’t happen at all. News that Konami nearly left PC players behind comes from Bloober CEO Piotr Babieno, who spoke about the sequel remake ahead of its October launch (via Bankier.pl). Although the Silent Hill 2 reimagining is a project that fans have begged for years for, its release was nearly limited to only one platform. The only thing that saved it from sticking exclusively with PlayStation at launch was Bloober itself. “Definitely Silent Hill 2 is a game that has been associated with the PlayStation brand from the very beginning,” the CEO said (as translated by DeepL). “At the very beginning, we had to push...
