From pixel-perfect platformers to deep, sprawling RPGs, my Wednesday bargain bin is loaded with gold. Across many storefronts, publishers are slashing RRPs like a Buster Sword through butter, and there’s never been a better excuse to finally tackle that backlog (or cram a few more in).
This Day in Gaming 🎂
In retro news, I'm celebrating three things: the 26th birthday of Ridge Racer Type 4 plus a weird and wonderful bunch of Namco-built controllers supported by it. The game itself? Well, it was an incredibly stylish arcade racer with ludicrously exaggerated drift mechanics, a "car-PG-lite" GP mode, and a banger soundtrack. Sadly, it was massively overshadowed by the original Gran Turismo, but it's well worth a low-cost look on the...

Larian Studios has published its Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 patch notes along with a farewell message to players who followed the journey for the last few years.
Details on everything included in this final major Baldur’s Gate 3 update found their way to the project’s official website today. Its launch for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X | S players today marks a bittersweet moment for fans who have patiently waited for Patch 8 to add long-desired features like crossplay, Xbox Series S split screen, and photo mode as the team at Larian moves on to what’s next.
“Outside of minor bug fixing, Patch 8 will be the last game patch to introduce new content,” the studio said. “That means we won’t be adding any new narrative content or...
Ubisoft is plotting a course to make Skull and Bones Year 2 the pirate multiplayer game’s biggest yet thanks to major content additions like new modes, ships, a Kraken, and something fans have begged for since launch: land combat.
Ubisoft opened its treasure chest of plans for the next year of updates during a special Year 2 showcase that premiered yesterday. Its presentation was packed with content to look forward to, but it’s Season 3: Guts and Glory that promises the land combat feature players have hoped to see included since Skull and Bones originally launched last February.
During Season 3 this fall, Ubisoft will finally allow players to take the action away from the sea, meaning you’ll be able to swordfight and even draw your...
Xbox has locked in its second wave of Game Pass games coming to the subscription service in the back-half of April 2025. It's an interesting mix of virtual worlds, from big names to indie darlings, and even a notable new role-playing game.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a big highlight here, as a brand-new role-playing game and the debut effort from studio Sandfall Interactive. The RPG sees a team of Expeditioners on their last legs, sailing to the ends of the world to stop the Paintress, who erases anyone as old as the number she writes on the horizon. It's available day-one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC on April 24.
Towerborne's Game Preview also heads to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC on April 29, bringing some action gameplay to...
I’ve been patrolling the skies and shooting down hostile aircraft in flight sims since the 1980s, all the way back to blazing away at single green pixels in the original Sublogic Flight Simulator for Apple II. Since then, I’ve whipped the Kilrathi aboard the Tiger Claw, crushed the Rebellion in TIE Fighter, gunned down the Red Baron in, well, The Red Baron, and buzzed my own apartment in Microsoft Flight Simulator. So I was pretty tickled by the opportunity to spend several hours with G-Rebels, an in-development game that combines several things I dearly love: aviation, Blade Runner, and open-ended approaches to gameplay. This amalgam of design influences produces something that is curious, ambitious, and dripping with potential, but...
Dune: Awakening, the upcoming open world survival MMO inspired by Frank Herbert's beloved sci-fi novels and Denis Villeneuve's films, has been delayed to June 10, 2025.
Funcom shared the news while also confirming that those who wish to get a head start will be able to jump into the game on June 5 if they purchase either the Deluxe Edition or Ultimate Edition.
As for why the game was delayed, Funcom said, following feedback from its ongoing Persistent Closed Beta, the decision was made so the team has "a bit more time to cook." This will also let them implement some of the changes they've discovered and that have been requested during this beta phase.
Furthermore, Funcom said the delay will allow for a "large-scale beta weekend next...

As of this writing, the Virtuos site is now nearly impossible to access, as most pages outside its main landing page seem to be down.
While details have been quickly scrubbed, numerous screenshots and details have already been spread...

Dreadmoor, a First-Person Fishing/Post-Apocalyptic Mystery Game Inspired by Dredge, Announced for PC
Developer Dream Dock has announced Dreadmoor, a new first-person single-player action-adventure inspired by the 2023 hit Dredge where you'll fish from your trawler, explore, fight monsters, craft items, upgrade your boat, and deal with whatever unexpected mysteries lurk in the post-apocalyptic Drownlands. It's in development for PC. Check out the announcement trailer above and the first screenshots in the gallery below.
Dream Dock describes Dreadmoor like so: "Step behind the helm of a fishing trawler and set sail into a world where, after a global nuclear war, continents have sunk beneath the waves, replaced by scattered islands and submerged ruins of ancient civilizations. Sell your catch to survivors, complete quests, and move one...
From Square-Enix’s legendary Final Fantasy VII through to Larian’s superlative Baldur’s Gate 3, the turn-based RPG genre has seen its fair share of heady, high-calibre offerings that have in turn (pun intended) redefined and elevated the concept of the humble turn-based RPG. The debut title from Sandfall Interactive, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 looks to add […]

In retro news, I'm celebrating the 15th birthday of Patapon 3, a PSP great and the highest point of an all-time franchise. Best described as a musical RPG where four-beat patterns and rhythmic button taps produce heroism, Patapon 3's catchy-arse songs still live rent free in my head a decade-and-a-half later.

Whether you’re quitting your office job to grow a farm in Stardew Valley or setting aside your warrior days to work at a tea shop in Wanderstop, sometimes you just want to take a break and embrace a simpler way of living. I didn’t expect to find this same sense of cozy escapism in a game about manufacturing and selling drugs in a grimy city, but with Schedule 1, that’s exactly what I got. Instead of the GTA-like chaotic romp through the criminal underworld I anticipated, I found myself peacefully packaging homegrown ganja into tiny baggies, building bonds with my local community by handing out free samples, and experimenting with new and novel narcotic recipes while my expanding drug empire flourished. The 40 hours it took me to perfect...
Long before Bethesda took the reins of the series and Walton Goggins smeared on the ghoul make-up for his spellbinding turn in its adapted TV show, Fallout was an isometric action RPG viewed from a bird’s eye perspective. It’s that classic style of wasteland-wandering that the upcoming Survive the Fall appears to be using as its reference point, at least if the first few hours of the game I got my hands on are anything to go by. This deadly post-apocalyptic tale of survival builds on the original Fallout’s template – quite literally in the case of its robust camp development system – and its squad-based combat and scavenging help it craft an experience that feels fresh, even if the somewhat static story presentation prevents its...

Having finally seen The Outer Worlds 2 for myself, it’s clear that leaning into deeper RPG elements was one of the priorities for developer Obsidian. Where the first game was more approachable with streamlined systems and progression for building out your character, the sequel is about avoiding homogeneity, and even egging you on to play in unorthodox fashion. But it’s not entirely about being complex for the sake of it. The Outer Worlds 2 wants players to get creative, become more specialized with the things they spec into, and maybe embrace the oddball choices they may have to make.
“We're looking for ways to incentivize the player to experiment with different builds...
It’s fair to say Verdansk is breathing new life into Call of Duty Warzone, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. The internet had declared Activision’s now five year-old battle royale “cooked” before the nostalgia-fueled Verdansk turned things around. Now, the internet has declared Warzone “back.” Didn't Activision nuke Verdansk? It doesn't seem to matter, as lapsed players who fondly remember Warzone as their lockdown game are returning to the map that started it all, and those who stuck with the game through thick and thin over the past five years are saying Warzone is more fun now than it’s been since it exploded onto the scene in 2020.
This back-to-basics gameplay experience was a deliberate design decision on the part of...

In retro news, I’m celebrating the 25th anniversary of Wario Land 3, a Game Boy Color must-get. This weird and wonderful third outing reimagined platforming conventions and proved that Nintendo’s second banana was no mere sidekick by eschewing the elegant precision of its Mario-helmed cousins for a non-linear, transformation-based puzzle box. I sacrificed many a AA battery to this...

If Escape From Tarkov is the PUBG of the extraction shooter, boldly striking out into a new genre despite humble origins, then Bungie’s upcoming shooter, Marathon, is the big-budget refinement that could become the emerging category’s Fortnite. Coming from a studio with a pedigree for first-person shooters that’s virtually unmatched, and which wields the resources to take a good idea and reimagine it in a disturbing, beautifully detailed sci-fi universe, it’s easy to see how Bungie just might pull it off. But with a concept that’s so inherently geared towards the hardcore PvP crowd and such a clear departure from what they’ve done in the past, it’s certainly not without risks, even if they do manage to capture the usual FPS magic...

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II has only been out since February, but you can already grab the Day One Edition of Warhorse Studios' hit sequel for as low as £39.95 at The Game Collection on both PS5 & Xbox Series X. Previously £54.95, that's a massive £15 saving for a critically well-received RPG that will take you at least 40 to 60 hours just to complete the main story.

The Game Collection has been an occasional good source of decent deals for some time now, but the retailer has especially come through today with making Elden Ring available for just £21.95 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, and PC.
That's a huge maximum price drop of £18 from the previous £39.95 price of the current-gen versions. Among the other retailers selling physical copies of FromSoftware's critically acclaimed and best-selling RPG, that's the best price you can get by far.
The only other in the UK that comes close is Argos, selling most of the same versions for £21.99, but you have to pay at least £3.95 extra for home delivery—making the actual total £25.98 if you don't fancy the free store collection option.

In retro news, I'm celebrating the 28th birthday of Suikoden, an all-timer PS One classic. In case you're not familiar with it, you control the son of a general destined to seek out 108 warriors to defeat a corrupt government and bring peace to the land. Not only did it feature duels and large turn based battles, but also packed a large amount of depth into its magic and combat system. The HD remaster is well worth smashing.

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 PC players are flooding Reddit, the official EA forums, and now also IGN's tipline with complaints that the game's various online modes, especially Galactic Assault, have been rendered "completely unplayable" due to hackers.
According to post after post after post on Reddit and the EA official forums, the ongoing issue is being caused by a hack that prevents PC players in online 40-player modes (especially Galactic Assault, but more recently also Supremacy) from spawning in, rendering matches entirely unplayable. Co-op and other modes with smaller groups of players seem to be unaffected.
Complaints about hackers in Battlefront 2 are nothing new, of course, with posts about the specific hack in question going...

Ember and Blade is a new action game for PC that's ready to prove that survivor and Soulslike are flavors that go together like peanut butter and jelly. The exclusive announcement trailer above introduces us to hero Fenrix Haven, a demon hunter who makes a deal with an angel for immortality, and the hordes of foes he'll have to slice and dice to prevent the resurrection of an ancient and pesky archdemon.
Combat looks heavily inspired by Hades, and there are ranged weapons, melee attacks and special attacks called Celestial Blessings. In the trailer we also get a glimpse of some of the other mechanics that will aid Fenrix on his journey, from a skill tree called The Grace of the Arbor to artifacts like a magically levitating hoverboard...
Ubisoft has insisted that buying a game doesn't give players "unfettered ownership rights" to it, only a "limited license to access the game."
The megacorp's comments come as it sought to dismiss a case brought by two unhappy The Crew players who took the company to court for shutting down its original racing game last year.
2014's The Crew is no longer playable. No version of the game, whether it's physical or digital or even if it's owned already, can be bought and played in any capacity, with servers going dark completely at the end of March 2024.
Ubisoft took measures to create offline versions of The Crew 2 and sequel The Crew: Motorfest to enable players to keep playing, but no similar action was taken for the original.
