Glen Schofield, who co-created Dead Space, co-founded Sledgehammer Games, and most recently directed The Callisto Protocol, said "it's tough out there" in the games industry, and admitted he had potentially "directed my last game" after failing to secure financial support for his latest prototype. In a candid post on LinkedIn, Schofield said he'd been working with his "great artist" daughter, Nicole, who went to him with an idea for a new horror game — maybe even a new horror sub-genre, although he didn't specify what — and had been working on the idea for the last eight months. Alongside a "small, talented crew" of six U.S. devs and a "full crew" in the UK, Schofield said he started talking to people, most of whom "loved the...
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection will release on September 30 — at least, that's what the Xbox App was telling prospective players over the weekend. Look now, and you may get the placeholder date of 31 December, 2025, showing on the Xbox app's Legacy Kollection storefront (or at least I did when I checked first thing this morning), but for a brief time yesterday, players were getting a different date: either September 29 or September 30, depending upon where they were in the world. As posters on Reddit suggest, this will more than likely get confirmed at the next Evo weekend, the annual celebration of all things fighting games, the next of which is set to take place in Las Vegas on August 1. It's possible the release date went live a...
Earlier today, we reported that Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has opened to 114,000+ concurrent players on Steam, making it one of the biggest launches on Steam for a non-FromSoftware Soulslike game yet. This milestone comes in spite of 'mostly negative' on Steam as players report issues with "extremely awful performance," a "completely lifeless" main character, and "clunky" combat and gameplay. At the time of writing, just 22% of the 9,300+ reviews left are positive. Developer Leenzee has now issued an update about the issues, admitting "these problems should never have occurred," adding "we deeply regret the inconvenience and negative experience some players are currently facing." "We are confident in the game’s performance within our...
I’ve ploughed through more release schedules than is probably healthy, but that hasn’t stopped me from dipping into the discount bin whenever gold floats to the top. This week’s crop caught me mid-caffeine sip and featured some genuine stunners. No filler, all killer, and a few legacy titles that are criminally underplayed too. This Day in Gaming 🎂 In retro news, I'm hyper beaming 31 candles on a cake for Super Metroid, a true legend of the Super Nintendo. To say this blew my mind at launch is quite the understatement; my SNES-owning neighbour and I were glued to his CRT (especially during sleepover sessions when this game's spookiness factor increased). Even to this day, this remains a masterpiece of the action-adventure genre...
Arnold Schwarzenegger's Dutch is back in the world of Predator via an extended version of animated movie Killer of Killers — and it’s sent fans of the long-running sci-fi franchise down a lore rabbit hole that calls into question the endings of the original movies and what was thought to be a canon Predator video game. This week at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, current Predator custodian Dan Trachtenberg announced a surprise extended version of Killer of Killers that shows Dutch from the original Predator and Danny Glover's Mike Harrigan from Predator 2 captured and frozen by the Yautja. Trachtenberg said during a panel at Comic-Con that Schwarzenegger had given his blessing to use Dutch in future stories, leaving the door open to a Killer...
IGN can exclusively reveal a brand-new gameplay trailer for Alien: Rogue Incursion - Part One: Evolved Edition, the previously VR-exclusive shooter that is set to be released on PS5 and PC on September 30, 2025. The new footage, which you can see below and is filled with blood and snow, shows plenty of Xenomorphs stalking the main character - ex-Colonial Marine Zula Hendricks - and the terrifying and exhilarating action that will follow, complete with Pulse Rifles, Motion Trackers, jump scares, and more. As for the story, for those who didn't play Alien: Rogue Incursion when it first launched on PlayStation VR2 and PCVR via Steam in December 2024 (And on Meta Quest in February), it is set on the planet Purdan (LV-354) in Gemini...
Cast your mind back to 2023. At the time, MCU fans didn’t know who exactly would go on to play The Sentry in Thunderbolts*, but the rumor mill pointed to Invincible star Steven Yeun. So when Invincible creator Robert Kirkman let slip that Yeun would be playing Robert Reynolds, aka The Sentry, in Thunderbolts*, Marvel fans went wild. Here’s that original quote from Kirkman two years ago: “Yeah, he [Yeun] called me, he went in for a costume fitting. I hope I’m not... I don’t think this is a spoiler or anything that will get anybody in trouble. I don’t know, maybe. We’ll see. I don’t care. I don’t work for Marvel. What are they going to do to me? “Yeah, he called me and he said, 'I just came back from a costume fitting for The Sentry. I...
It only took one match of Wildgate to see the potential in its spacefaring PvPvE mayhem. Now, after just over 20 hours of playtime, I’m also noticing where there is still room for it to build on that compelling concept. The intensely cooperative chaos of managing a spacecraft, delving into PvE dungeons for loot, and fending off rival crews makes for complex and exciting contests of teamwork and communication. Unfortunately, that level of coordination doesn’t always lead to great outcomes when matchmaking with random crewmates, where silent players or, worse yet, insanely toxic personalities can make for a bad time. But when a matchmade crew manages to come together, or you bring your own friends to the party, Wildgate’s simple but solid...
Amazon MGM Studios is working with MachineGames to create a Wolfenstein TV series. Details come from Variety, which states that a show based on the iconic Bethesda Softworks property is in development. Although no specific plot details are ready to be shared, the team behind the Wolfenstein series shared an official logline that makes things nice and simple: “The story of killing Nazis is evergreen.” The foundation for a TV series adaptation based on the classic alternate history video game franchise is about as solid as any fan could hope for. The Leftovers writer and Station Eleven creator Patrick Somerville is currently attached as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the Wolfenstein show via his chaoticgood.tv...
Sure, A Minecraft Movie made nearly $1 billion at the global box office, but one of the biggest things to come out of the film was undoubtedly the reactions to the Chicken Jockey scene. Now, you can pre-order your very own action figure and plush of the iconic zombie and chicken duo and get a first look at them if you happen to be at San Diego Comic-Con. Mattel's two new Minecraft exclusives - the Minecraft Movie Chicken Jockey Large Scale Action Figure and Minecraft Zombie Chicken Jockey Plush - made their big debut at SDCC and those in attendance this weekend can see them in person by stopping by Microsoft's booth #435. If you aren't able to make it, you can pre-order the Minecraft Movie Chicken Jockey Large Scale Action Figure at...
The debate over the direction of role-playing games has raged on for years. There's been a little extra fuel to the fire in 2025 with the success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 though, as its a turn-based RPG that wears its inspirations right alongside the 33 on its sleeve. Now those links are reality, as several members of the Clair Obscur team recently visited Square Enix's offices and met with some of the development leads there, including Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi and Visions of Mana director Ryosuke Yoshida. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 game director Guillaume Broche, producer Francois Meurisse, and technical director Tom Guillermin, as well as publisher Kepler Interactive's CEO Alexis Garavaryan, took the...
The barrage of abusive comments that Capcom’s Monster Hunter Wilds has been receiving from Japanese-speaking fans recently caught the attention not just of Japan’s gaming media, but of The Sankei Shimbun, a major mainstream newspaper. However, Monster Hunter Wilds is just the tip of the iceberg. Threatening comments, especially those targeting individual developers and company employees, have become an increasing problem for the Japanese game industry, with many major companies drawing up specific policies against harassment from customers over the last few years. In the Sankei article, Hideki Yasuda, an experienced games industry analyst at Toyo Securities weighed in on the topic. He noted that while there have always been...

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company’s patent infringement lawsuit in Japan against Pocketpair’s open-world survival game Palworld is ongoing. In the latest development, Nintendo has reworded one of the patents in the case, but what led up to this bizarre move? Palworld is an open-world survival game that skyrocketed in popularity upon its Steam and Xbox early access launch back on January 19, 2024. It sold 8 million copies in just six days and racked up over 25 million players in one month. The game world is inhabited by creatures called Pals, which you can capture and use (read: exploit) to carry out various tasks. The visual appearance of the Pals and the method of capturing them by throwing a ball (Pal Sphere), quickly drew...
We currently know six of the playable characters in fighting game Invincible VS. There will be more, of course. But just how many? Based on comments from Invincible creator Robert Kirkman in an interview with IGN at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, Invincible VS will have a massive roster. Invincible VS is the upcoming 3v3 tag fighting game set in the Invincible universe. It’s developed by Skybound Entertainment’s first in-house game studio, Quarter Up. Already confirmed Invincible VS characters include Mark Grayson (Invincible), Atom Eve, Thula, Bulletproof, and Rex Splode. Check out IGN’s Invincible VS preview from June for more. Fresh from his SDCC 2025 panel where he announced Battle Beast for Invincible VS, Kirkman told IGN that if fans...
The cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps recently gathered to try out Marvel Rivals for the first time, and the actors' reaction to Invisible Woman’s skimpy Malice skin has the internet in tears. Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm), and Joseph Quinn (Human Torch) recently gathered to play NetEase Games’ popular hero shooter with YouTuber Loserfruit. The resulting video is quite funny, showing the new Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) family as they fumble through a few matches as their in-game counterparts. It's goofy and occasionally hard to watch as Pascal flails his stretchy arms at enemies, but the highlight is no doubt the Fantastic Four cast’s reaction to Invisible Woman’s...
Invincible VS will feature Battle Beast as a playable character. Confirmation comes direct from Invincible creator Robert Kirkman’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, where a new trailer, below, showing Battle Beast in action was revealed. Here’s the official blurb on Battle Beast: Warning! Spoilers for Invincible Season 3 follow: In the Season 3 of Invincible, Battle Beast survives a...
Ubisoft has announced a release date for Claws of Awaji, its first Assassin's Creed Shadows expansion. The major new add-on will arrive on September 16 as a paid DLC, or for free to those who pre-ordered the game. Included within it is a new region — the island of Awaji — fresh gear, abilities, outfits, enemies, and 10 hours of new story content that picks up Shadows' main plotline for those who've now seen the game's main end credits roll. What new revelations lie in wait for Naoe concerning her family? Will Yasuke get to take down some more Templars? There are now less than two months to go until we find out. A fresh roadmap of other content coming to Assassin's Creed Shadows includes a big progession update on July 29, featuring...
Just in case there was any lingering doubt about the wild success of FromSoftware's juggernaut Elden Ring series, today publisher Bandai Namco confirmed its DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, has sold over 10 million copies, and its co-op spin-off title, Elden Ring Nightreign, five million. The base game itself has now exceeded 30 million copies sold. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is a single-player DLC expansion for FromSoftware's hit RPG featuring an all-new story set in the Realm of Shadow, complete with new weapons, items, enemies, and boss encounters. We thought Shadow of the Erdtree was a 'Masterpiece', and awarded it a rare 10/10, writing in IGN's Shadow of the Erdtree review: "Like the base game did before it, Elden Ring...
The Josef Fares-directed co-op games from Hazelight have been so good – and crucially, also so commercially successful – that it’s about time we started seeing some other developers trying to get in on that artistically beautiful, mandatory two-player action. And Out of Words, from poet Morten Søndergaard and co-developers WiredFly and Kong Orange, not only fits the mold cast by Fares, but has the potential to be as good as anything the former filmmaker has made so far. It’s purely coincidental that Out of Words has so much in common with Hazelight’s games, but it’s an interesting coincidence nonetheless. Søndergaard, like Fares, is a European artist who came from outside of the games industry. And Out of Words promises an emotional...
WWE 2K25 only released on Nintendo Switch 2 yesterday, July 23, but fans have already noticed that community creations — and the image uploader to import them — are missing from its Switch 2 version. “If you are playing on the Switch 2 you won’t be able to upload or view custom images from other platforms," 2K explains in the game's FAQ. Later on, addressing a different question, the publisher added: "Nintendo Switch 2 players will not see Image Uploader-based Community Creations from any platform or be able to upload their own.” This means the community's popular user-created content, like custom arenas and CAWs (Create-A-Wrestler), will not be available on Switch 2, but are still accessible on PC, PS5, Xbox Series, and even last-gen...
IGN can exclusively reveal an exciting new Star Wars collection from Heroes & Villains for San Diego Comic-Con 2025 inspired by Rebel Pathfinders and Star Wars: Battlefront II's Inferno Squad. SDCC 2025 marks a big milestone for Heroes & Villains, as the brand took shape on the floors of the con at the Lucasfilm Pavilion 10 years ago with a story-driven approach to apparel and accessories that "focuses on high-quality fabrics and thoughtful representation of fandoms" as opposed to "fast fashion." As for the apparel, which you can see in the slideshow below, it features items inspired by two of the most "daring and iconic military franchises in the Star Wars universe." First up are the Rebel Pathfinders, who were integral in the...
I keep coming back to the same question with Killing Floor 3: where's the rest of it? I comfortably spent the last week teaming up against waves of mutant clone zombies, and mindlessly hacking and slashing through these Zeds was a lot of fun. But more than once, my teammates and I – many of whom enjoyed Killing Floor 2, myself included – found ourselves asking one another, "Is this the final release, or is it just Early Access?" Whether you like to play online or if you just prefer to go it alone, Killing Floor 3's singular Survival mode is generally a good time, but it’s also a much simpler, more tightly-woven shoot-em-up compared to its predecessors. The weapons and classes it does include are at least a blast to use, and its enemies...
2025 has not been the best year for Xbox. Microsoft’s recent massive company-wide layoff impacted up to 9,000 employees, nearly half of whom worked at Xbox. Multiple games were cancelled, “AAAA” studio The Initiative was shut down, and countless talented staff lost. It’s a strange and uneasy contrast, then, to see that Xbox has actually had a pretty good year when it comes to games. Its biggest first-party releases so far this year have been Obsidian Entertainment’s Avowed, Compulsion Games’ South of Midnight, Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, and id Software’s Doom: The Dark Ages. The company has also pushed forward its multiplatform plans with a few ports for the PlayStation 5, including the previously Xbox and PC...
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has launched to 114,000+ concurrent players on Steam, making it one of the biggest launches for a non-FromSoftware Soulslike game yet. It's currently the eighth biggest game on Steam by concurrent player count, smashing through the 100,000 concurrent player barrier and clocking up 114,132 players in the last 24 hours. By comparison, and according to data supplied by SteamDB, Lies of P's highest concurrent peak is a little over 30,000 players, Lords of the Fallen is 43,075 players, and The First Berserker: Khazan is just shy of 33,000. Concurrent players isn't the only metric we should use when measuring how successful a game is, of course, but it's a good starting point, even though it doesn't account for...
