Can you explain the VAC ban?

I was banned from CoD MW2 because I was playing coop missions with my friends using some mods and things that could be considered hack. At that time (6 years ago) I thought that it would be okay to use cheats in coop missions because I was not disturbing anyones experience. Unfortunately i was banned from whole multiplayer even though I never hacked on a multiplayer game. I tried to appeal but they rejected to consider my appeals. It is probably the only game I banned from, in my entire life.
