The Finals launched in open beta form this week, and it’s proven to be so popular its developer has struggled to maintain capacity.
The Finals is an eye-catching team-based first-person shooter from Stockholm-based Embark Studios, which was founded by ex-DICE developers who worked on the Battlefield series.
We don’t have player numbers for Xbox or PlayStation, but we can see just how popular the open beta is on Steam, where The Finals is currently the sixth most-popular game on Valve’s platform with an impressive 132,226 concurrent players. That puts it ahead of the likes of GTA 5, Baldur’s Gate 3, Call of Duty, and the resurgent Battlefield 2042.
“With so many of you logging into the game, we’ve started to hit the limits of our capacity,” Embark said in a statement. “In order to safeguard the experience for those that are playing - and as we work to expand our capacity - we will be introducing a temporary login queue. Thank you so much for your patience and for helping us test the game.”
One mechanic that sets The Finals apart is destruction within the virtual arenas. Players can alter, exploit, and even destroy the environment in order to get a jump on their opponents or draw them into traps. The narrative set up is a Hunger Games-style televised virtual combat game show, with holographic crowds and commentary.
The Finals open beta runs on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Steam until November 5.
