Tencent Acquires Majority Stake in Rime Developer Tequila Works

Tencent has been on a spree of acquiring or investing in gaming studios over the past few years. Now, the Chinese tech giant has become the majority shareholder of the Spanish studio, Tequila Works. The developer is known for games such as Rime, Gylt, The Sexy Brutale, and the upcoming Son of Nunu: A League of Legends Story.

In a statement, Tequila Works CEO Raul Rubio said, "For 12 years, the teams at Tequila Works have passionately crafted high-quality titles that radiated our personal sensibilities. But there’s a limit to how much you can grow by yourself."

Rubio says Tencent is a "partner that can appreciate the value of top creative talent with originality as their banner. One that respects our independence and creative freedom. This partnership will allow us to focus on taking the original IPs we are known for to greater heights and create the best experiences we can dream of."

Tencent has acquired a majority stake in Spanish game studio Tequila Works, the developer of RIME & Song of Nunu.

Tencent invested in or acquired over 100 game related companies in 2021. A more than 3x increase over 2020.

Tencent has resources that will allow Tequila Works to become a stronger studio and produce high-quality studios, as Luz Sancho Tequila Works Chairwoman explained, "all made with the care and passion our beloved fans know us for as well as the opportunity of bringing these projects to a wider audience.”

Pete Smith, VP of Partnerships for Tencent also chimed in, saying, "Tequila Works’ creativity and attention to detail has resulted in titles that have delighted audiences around the world. We look forward to working alongside the team and building on these foundations to deliver on its exciting ambitions for future games."

Other recent Tencent acquisitions include developers such as Back 4 Blood's Turtle Rock Studios, as well as Klei Entertainment, and Sumo Digital. Klei is behind games such as Don't Starve and Mark of the Ninja, while Sumo Digital previously worked on Crackdown 3 and Sackboy: A Big Adventure.

Tequila Works is currently working on Song of Nunu, which is being published by Riot Forge, Riot Games' third-party publishing label. This game follows a young boy named Nunu and a yeti named Willump, where they solve puzzles and fight wolves in the frigid land of Freijlord.
