Sea of Thieves Is Getting a Tabletop Adaptation

Rare’s multiplayer role playing pirate extravaganza Sea of Thieves is getting its own tabletop board game, courtesy of Steamforged Games.

As reported by Polygon, Sea of Thieves: Voyage of Legends will see two to four players compete to upgrade their ships, hire crews, hunt treasure, and sell cargo at outposts as they strive to outdo one another and crown themselves the Pirate Lord.

Steamforged Games is responsible for creating a range of tabletop adaptations based on popular gaming franchises including Dark Souls and Resident Evil. Adaptations of Monster Hunter: Rise and FromSoftware’s hit 2022 title Elden Ring are also on the way.

As many of you sharp-witted scallywags guessed – we’re making a Sea of Thieves board game in collaboration with Rare! 🏴‍☠️

“From a creative perspective, Sea of Thieves’ distinctive art style has been a real pleasure to work with, and looks just as evocative on tiles as it does on screen,” explained Steamforged Games co-founder Mat Hart. “Rare captured pirate magic with their compelling gameplay loop, and that’s something we’ve strived to bring to the board game too.”

The tabletop adventure will ship with ten dice, 24 standee pieces, and 150 cards that will be used to represent everything from player ships to megalodons, skeleton forts, and everything in between.

Unlike previous adaptations sold by the company that began life as Kickstarter campaigns, Sea of Thieves:Voyage of Legends will be going straight to retail with a price tag of $59.95.

In our 2020 review, IGN gave Sea of Thieves an 8/10, describing it as a "pirate fantast with an enormous amount of things to do, made unpredictable by the addition of other players".
