Inscryption Developer Daniel Mullins Reveals Pony Island 2: Panda Circus | Game Awards 2023

Daniel Mullins, the indie developer beyond the 2016 meta hit Pony Island and 2021's 2021 roguelike deck-builder Inscryption, has a new game coming - and it's a sequel.

Pony Island 2: Panda Circus was announced at Thursday's The Game Awards with a quick trailer, replicating the crude arcade-like style of its predecessor. We didn't get a release date or window, but it's still a good look at the thoroughly spooky-looking sequel.

"This is not a drill," Mullins wrote on X/Twitter along with the announcement trailer. "This is not a game about ponies."

Inscryption was a critical hit when it was released a couple of years ago, with fans praising its satisfying deck-building and horror-inspired vibes. As IGN's Tom Marks wrote in his 9/10 review, "Inscryption is as consistently fun as it is surprising, with a wonderfully creepy story cleverly tying its ever-evolving mechanics together."

We were big fans of Pony Island, too, giving it a 9/10 as well, with Cam Shea calling it "a punk rock experiment in storytelling and game design that delights in toying with the player." Pony Island started as an arcade game, before it was revealed that Lucifer himself corrupted it and was trying to consume the soul of the player.

We don't know much about Pony Island 2 yet but, if the trailer is any indication, we're expecting a similar mood at the very least.
