Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition Becomes First Xbox Series X Game on 3 Discs

The just announced Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will become the first Xbox Series X game to release with three discs, CD Projekt Red has confirmed.

Speaking to IGN, a spokesperson clarified exactly how the Ultimate Edition — which packages the base Cyberpunk 2077 with its Phantom Liberty expansion — will be released on each system.

"The Xbox Series X box contains three discs with the base game and expansion," the CD Projekt Red spokesperson confirmed, which makes it the only physical version of Phantom Liberty available across any platform.

"The PlayStation 5 box includes a game disc with Cyberpunk 2077 and a code for the expansion to be redeemed in the PlayStation Store," they added. "The PC version comes with a GOG code for both the base game and the expansion. The reason for the difference in how the Phantom Liberty is included in the Ultimate Edition is due to technical requirements specific to each platform."

While fellow hit role-playing game Baldur's Gate 3 was set to become the first triple disc Xbox Series X game when it arrives in the first quarter of 2024, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will beat it across the line by launching December 5, 2023. PS5 exclusive Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is also set to launch on two discs when it comes out in February.

John Linneman of tech analysis website Digital Foundry posted on X/Twitter to say why he believes the PS5 version of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition won't come with Phantom Liberty on disc. Putting it there, instead of just adding a download code, would require CD Projekt Red to resubmit their game to Sony, which would require extra time and money. The same happened with Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Integrade, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, and more.

The physical edition for consoles will also mark the first time Cyberpunk 2077 comes packaged under current generation banners, with only a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version of the game available physically previously. The Ultimate Edition will not be released for those consoles, however, as Phantom Liberty wasn't either.

All of CD Projekt Red's previous updates to the game will of course be included too, essentially making the Ultimate Edition a one stop shop for the complete Cyberpunk 2077 experience. Though scathed at launch for its poor performance on consoles, the developer has since turned Cyberpunk 2077 around and the game had sold 25 million copies as of October 2023.

Phantom Liberty arrived September 26, with Update 2.0 laying its foundation a few days earlier. It completely revamped Cyberpunk 2077 with features such as a new perk system and improved AI and also brought closure to an Elon Musk fan theory, a reference to the late racing legend Ken Block, and bizarre additions to the game's biggest mystery.

In our 9/10 review of the expansion, IGN said: "Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty completes an immense turnaround for CD Projekt Red's future RPG kickstarted with the anime spin-off, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and its latest 2.0 Update."
