To celebrate two years of skin sharing, Minecraft Skin Studio has been completely redesigned! Since the release of Skin Studio over 900,000 skins have been created, almost 3,000,000 comments written, and over 2,500,000 likes cast. Not too shabby. A lot has changed in Minecraft since then too, so rather than patch the older version, the good people at 57digital have remade their app from the ground up. Skin Studio Encore now features: A completely new user interface and easier to use editing system Full support for both Steve & Alex 3D Previews everywhere – including while editing your skin! Uses the new Minecraft API for importing a skin by username Loads of advanced tools (including the much requested copy & paste!) Over 900,000 community skins The ability to submit your own creation to the community or download & modify! Upload your skin to minecraft.net and change your skin for PC/Mac. A trial version of Skin Studio is also available. Skin Studio Lite gives you the chance to design a full Minecraft Skin, but with slightly limited tools. It’s also worth pointing out that Skin Studio Pro users get the Encore upgrade for free! Just go to the updates tab on the app store. Don’t forget about 57digital’s other apps too! Minecraft Papercraft Studio and Minecraft Skin Scanner are also pretty cool! Happy Holidays everyone! Continue reading...

Hello, friends. You’ve probably heard of ebola by now. It’s a terrible disease that’s claimed over 5000 lives in a recent epidemic in West Africa. We’ve known about it for over 40 years, but it’s still considered a serious illness with no known cure. Despite that, 50% of ebola sufferers do survive, and potential vaccines are currently being tested. Good hospital care and emergency shipments to Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone are vital during this time of need. But they don’t come cheap. That’s where we can help out! A crew of Mojangstas, along with a few other game developers are participating in a game jam that runs from now until 11AM PST/8PM CET on Saturday. Even better, every smidgen of cash raised goes straight to Direct Relief’s ebola fund. The theme of the jam will be “healing,” for reasons that you can probably work out yourself. How to donate All you need to do is donate on humblebundle. By doing that, you’ll get access to every game developed during the Games Against Ebola jam, and help save lives in the process. It’s a massive win-win. Watch the games being developed You can also spectate live progress on the development of the games. Watch the main channel here. It will cycle through the following Mojanger’s feeds: Kappische, Dinnerbone, seargedp, krisjelbring and jbernhardsson. TL;DR Ebola is a terrible disease that is causing many deaths in West Africa. Money is needed to put a stop to it. Donate to Games Against Ebola to help those in need and get a handful of games to play this Saturday. 100% of your donations go to Direct Relief. Thanks for reading, everybody. Owen – @bopogamel Continue reading...
Minecraft Realms is getting even more exciting! We’ve packed it to the brim with fresh mini-games, maps to spark an epic adventure, and intricate custom spawns. Realms gives you and your friends a persistent Minecraft world. It doesn’t matter if the host is online or what time of day it is; Realms worlds are always available for building, adventuring, and crafting. You can start from a random seed, or choose one of our pre-installed maps. You can even switch between the two and save/restore your progress when convenient. We thought it would be good to give you a rundown of the pre-made maps currently included in Realms. Thanks to all the fantastic community members for creating these masterpieces. You are all talented and generous and lovely. Learn more about Realms by visiting our website or checking out the subreddit. Bloxorz by JesperTheEnd Bloxorz is an homage to popular Flash game… erm… Bloxorz. It’s a puzzler that rewards forward planning and good brainwork. Check out some cool footage of the game in the video above but bear in mind that the level editor is not available in the Realms version. That said, all 33 levels from the original are, so don’t stress too much. Color Cube by Musclecraft (MaxSizeIs) Color cube is a tactical minigame that’s all about claiming territory. Players paint the level their own color by running around one of nine available maps, and doing their best not to fall off the ever-changing landscape. There are even powerups to help spice up the gameplay. Play it with a bunch of friends for maximum fun. Diamond Defender by Xisuma & Eease Diamond Defender is another innovative minigame. This one tasks players with surviving a terrifying ten waves of creeper attacks while protecting your stash of precious diamonds. Not one for the faint of heart but a bundle of creeper-based mayhem. Diversity 2 by QMagnet Diversity 2 is a Complete the Monument-style minigame. That means that players need to find or earn specific blocks to “complete” the map. The extra cool thing about Diversity 2 is that those blocks are earned through completing a bunch of challenges in specific zones. You should definitely check this one out; Marc Watson – the adorable and much-loved guy from Minecraft support – lists this as one of his favourite maps of all time! Knockback Madness by AKAMC Knockback Madness is a chaotic mixture of player versus player combat and vertigo-inducing parkour. Players use their Minecraft combat skills to take out the other players using deadly weapons while avoiding their enemies’ advances. Competitive stuff for fans of intense combat! Missile Wars by SethBling & Cubehamster Missile Wars is a conveniently descriptive title for this cracking minigame. Players launch TNT and Slime Block missiles at each other’s bases while trying to defend their own by defusing opponents’ missiles with skilled marksmanship. You can even ride your own warhead across the map! Awesome stuff. Pizzaspleef by SethBling Pizzaspleef is Seth Bling’s innovative take on the classic Minecraft mini-game, Spleef. The objective is to be the last players standing on a giant pizza. Players earn bonuses such as super speed or jump boosts by mining each of the toppings . It’s a deliciously chaotic quest for glory! Raider’s Refuge by Blockworks Raiders Refuge is an exciting survivial map in Realms. Start your game here and you’ll spawn in a majestic settlement sitting on a rugged coastline. It’s perfect for playing out pirate fantasies before venturing into the unknown. Spellbound Caves by Vechs Spellbound Caves is a Complete the Monument map by Vechs – one of the pioneers of the genre. It’s one part of his Super Hostile series which is notorious for it’s challenging nature. I’m sure you’ve got the skills required though – you look like a hardy crafter. Winter Stronghold by Blockworks Winter Stronghold is our second survival map. Instead of beginning your adventure in a random spawn, players start in this prebuild stronghold complete with all its wintery charm. Gather supplies, plan your journey, then head into the wild. That’s it for now! Hope you enjoyed this rundown. Visit our Realms site for more. Have a great weekend everyone, Owen – @bopogamel Continue reading...

Creating video games is creative, fun, and cool. Loads of awesome people are doing it right now. And you can be one of those awesome people! To celebrate, the friendly folk at Oxeye Game Studio are hosting a Cobalt Game Jam this weekend. That basically means that a bunch of folk have agreed to make a game within a set time limit. Some participants are streaming their progress too; it’s a great way to get instant feedback and stay motivated. The Oxeye Game Jam is a casual affair. There’s no pressure or cost, but there is an extremely high chance of fun and increased knowledge. The jam finishes this Sunday at 12:00 CET. If you’re interested in taking part, or would like to watch the current participants cook up their creations, visit the Cobalt channel on Espernet, check out Daniels post on the Oxeye Blog, and watch and inspire these good folk as they craft their own masterpieces: http://www.hitbox.tv/jansedivy http://www.twitch.tv/taschenschieber http://www.twitch.tv/TheOfficialStinger http://www.twitch.tv/gonarr http://www.hitbox.tv/DolanCZ http://www.twitch.tv/RedstoneShadow http://www.twitch.tv/frall_ http://www.twitch.tv/raykatzon Have a great weekend everyone! Yes, the deal is real. Mojang is being bought by Microsoft. It was reassuring to see how many of your opinions mirrored those of the Mojangstas when we heard the news. Change is scary, and this is a big change for all of us. It’s going to be good though. Everything is going to be OK. <3 Please remember that the future of Minecraft and you – the community – are extremely important to everyone involved. If you take one thing away from this post, let it be that. We can only share so much information right now, but we’ve decided that being as honest as possible is the best approach. We’re still working a lot of this stuff out. Mega-deals are serious business. Why did you sell Minecraft? Minecraft has grown from a simple game to a project of monumental significance. Though we’re massively proud of what Minecraft has become, it was never Notch’s intention for it to get this big. As you might already know, Notch is the creator of Minecraft and the majority shareholder at Mojang. He’s decided that he doesn’t want the responsibility of owning a company of such global significance. Over the past few years he’s made attempts to work on smaller projects, but the pressure of owning Minecraft became too much for him to handle. The only option was to sell Mojang. He’ll continue to do cool stuff though. Don’t worry about that. There are only a handful of potential buyers with the resources to grow Minecraft on a scale that it deserves. We’ve worked closely with Microsoft since 2012, and have been impressed by their continued dedication to our game and its development. We’re confident that Minecraft will continue to grow in an awesome way. Minecraft means many different things to millions of people across the world, and to each and every Mojangsta. We feel that this is the best way for everyone – you guys included – to benefit. What about the other editions of Minecraft? Will they stop being developed? There’s no reason for the development, sales, and support of the PC/Mac, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, Vita, iOS, and Android versions of Minecraft to stop. Of course, Microsoft can’t make decisions for other companies or predict the choices that they might make in the future. We’re extremely proud of all editions and the awesome things you have achieved through playing together. Is the game going to change? Will we still be able to make videos, mods, awesome builds, and all the cool stuff we’ve created over the past few years? Minecraft will continue to evolve, just like it has since the start of development. We don’t know specific plans for Minecraft’s future yet, but we do know that everyone involved wants the community to grow and become even more amazing than it’s ever been. Stopping players making cool stuff is not in anyone’s interests. What about the Mojang staff? What’s happening to you guys? Though it’s too early to confirm which of us will continue working on Minecraft or other projects, we predict that the vast majority (if not all) Mojangstas will continue to work at Mojang for the time being. The founders: Notch, Carl, and Jakob are leaving. We don’t know what they’re planning. It won’t be Minecraft-related but it will probably be cool. What’s happening to the other Mojang projects, like Scrolls? We don’t know yet. We’ll share any news as soon as we do. Will you still be able to tweet about features and interact with the community on a personal level, just like you’ve done over the years? Yes! That’s not going to change. How much money was the company bought for? Microsoft acquired Mojang for a smooth 2.5 BILLION dollars. Thanks for reading everybody. Owen – @bopogamel, Lydia – @lydiawinters, and the Mojangstas. Yeay! Minecraft for Xbox One is available to download from Xbox Marketplace! Here are some questions and answers to celebrate. I’ve bought Minecraft for my Xbox 360 but now I want it on my Xbox One. You can import your existing Xbox 360 world to Xbox One Edition. To so that, load up Xbox 360 Edition, upload your world to the Excellent Xbone Extra Cool Cloud (not the official name), then re-download it from inside Xbox One Edition. All of your existing Xbox 360 DLC will work on Xbox One Edition. You can’t play cross-platform between Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Sad but true. I’ve never played Minecraft on my Xbox 360. I am exotic tree puncher? Where is gunz? Minecraft for Xbox One will cost $19:99 from the Xbox Marketplace. It’s a friendly and fun game that’s very popular with cool people across the world. It features sheep, other animals, blocks, and tools. You can build cool stuff. You can go on adventures with friends. It’s really pretty if you catch it at the right time. You probably know this by now, considering you’re on the Mojang blog, and I posted this information a few days ago when discussing other versions. Xbox One Edition features bigger worlds and an improved draw distance than Xbox 360 Edition. If this doesn’t mean anything to you, don’t worry. Just load up Minecraft and have fun. I hate Xboxes! Where’s the Sony love? I am angry about this. Don’t be angry. I’ve already talked about the Playstation 4/Vita Editions in a separate post. It’s been a busy week! Have fun playing Minecraft and be nice to each other on the internet please. Owen – @bopogamel and the Mojangers Continue reading...

Hey everyone! I’ve been getting a lot of questions about MINECON lately, because before this time last year everyone knew the date and location and ticket info for MINECON 2013. While we don’t have a set date for the next MINECON just yet, I wanted to let everyone know that it won’t be until some time in 2015. I’m shooting to have it in the spring in London! While we’d love to do MINECON every year and it’s the only event we do as a company, we want to make sure we can give it the attention it needs, and that means that springtime next year will work best! As soon as I have confirmed information it’ll be out there. We always announce as soon as we confirm with the venue and have a signed contract, but never before, because we want to make sure we can follow through with the event and we never want people to start planning to attend something that might not happen. So watch out for information in the coming months! Vu – @vubui Continue reading...

Hey everyone! We just released MCPE 0.9.5, another bugfix version for 0.9. This time, it may or may not be the last, but we hope so! We found and squashed many nasty bugs still hiding in the very fabric on the game, so 0.9 should be now quite stable. Here are the bugs we fixed: - (Android) fixed a really nasty bunch of problems caused by locking the device like freezing, crashing, corrupting the world and more - (Android) fixed a bad graphics corruption issue (missing chunks, corrupted chunks and animals) that happened when switching away from the game - fixed chunks not loading in multiplayer when the client device is slower than the server - fixed a crash when loading flat worlds after updating from 0.9.0/2 - fixed a possible server crash when a player disconnects from a multiplayer world - fixed a possible crash or corruption when playing in multiplayer as a client - Fixed Bryce Mesa biome, now they actually spawn! - fixed fountains’ water in strongholds - (Fire TV) fixed missing textures And we made a few tweaks, too: - Players that have been placed at extreme heights by the respawn bugs are now placed back at y=130 - (Android) the game doesn’t waste battery power and really stops rendering now when in the background - not getting stuck anymore in the “Looking for Server” screen if the server is full - animals are never despawned, again We’ve just uploaded this version to every store, so it should be out on Google Play soon and on Apple, Amazon and Samsung stores soon-ish! Hello! We just released a new Pocket Edition version to Google Play, 0.9.3! This version fixes some last nasty bugs that we introduced in 0.92: - fixed several crashes that prevented from playing in multiplayer - fixed a nasty bug that on death might hang the game and/or spawn you really up in the sky - on Android, you can get more than 3 levels of view distance again - the game now handles when a world is corrupted and not repairable showing an error screen - Creepers don’t spam weird sounds anymore - mobs won’t spawn anymore in peaceful, and existing ones will be removed - correctly despawning entities on clients - fixed soft shading on wool tiles - possibly fixed other lock-ups and crashes We are going to wait and see how it works before submitting it to App store and Amazon store but we hope to do that tomorrow. Most of the issues should now be fixed but please report things if they break! Jens – @jeb_, Johan – @jbernhardsson, and Tommasso – @_tomcc Continue reading...
Update: We can never be sure if bending space around time is the right approach until we get feedback from you on the 14w29b snapshot that bends time around space instead. We do that by using the newly implemented threaded render batch system. That’s a lot a fancy sounding words, so if you don’t know what that means, it should improve performance even more. Or crash horribly. But without your feedback, we’ll never know which one is true. So here it is, the 14w29b update… Fixed in this snapshot: [Bug MC-62116] – Players loses CommandStats{} after Death [Bug MC-62134] – #players are taking up space on the sidebar display — 14w29a update notes — This snapshot contains a lot of optimizations specifically targeting render performance. If your system supports it, you can select VBO in the video setting. This enables Vertex Buffer Objects and should increase your fps by 5% to 10% on average. We are especially interested on feedback on performance related issues with this snapshot. Last week we compressed time and space, that did not work too well for the snapshot. So this week we will try something else and bend space around time. Apart from these highly experimental changes, we also did this: [Bug MC-71] – Mobs don't spawn next to water streams if the x and z coordinates are negative [Bug MC-267] – Potion effect status doesn't show If the inventory was open when it was cast upon the player. [Bug MC-393] – Starvation prevents sleeping in bed on peaceful. [Bug MC-404] – Viewing a map while invisible still shows both hands holding it [Bug MC-455] – Standing on exact X.0 Z.0 coordinates prevents breaking/placing block in North West [Bug MC-486] – Zombies and Skeletons don't burn on slabs [Bug MC-506] – You can make smooth sandstone into smooth sandstone [Bug MC-665] – Minecarts and TNT are not moved by water currents [Bug MC-676] – Signs and chests do not display cracking animation [Bug MC-49041] – Teleporting with rotation might twist your head [Bug MC-53033] – Unable to disable nameTagVisilibity for someone in spectator mode [Bug MC-57516] – CanPickUpLoot and CustomNameVisible not Working [Bug MC-59052] – Cannot add fake players or named entities to scoreboard teams [Bug MC-59602] – Hoppers/Dropper can't take water bucket out of furnace [Bug MC-59634] – You get the message "Your game mode has beed updated" even when sendCommandFeedback = false [Bug MC-59946] – Iron trapdoors appear on the opposite side of where they are placed when open (east/west orientation) [Bug MC-60279] – Detector rails render as unpowered, even when powered [Bug MC-61033] – Particle command don't work [Bug MC-61451] – Frame-rate drop in 14w28b [Bug MC-61453] – /title command writing errors on the server log [Bug MC-61505] – Mob Spawners count min/max spawn delay with a rate of 10 instead of 1 [Bug MC-61519] – Chests that should be oriented east/west are oriented north in desert temples [Bug MC-61577] – CommandStats are not used when a command sign is right-clicked by non-OPs [Bug MC-61586] – Client freezes for ~1 second in multiplayer when opacity of a block changes next to unloaded chunk [Bug MC-61666] – cannot setblock or fill ender chests [Bug MC-61711] – Sidebar Scoreboard shows the lowest scores and not the best when hitting the limit of the sidebar Please report any and all bugs you find in Minecraft to bugs.mojang.com. We’re starting to enter the last phase of our development cycle for 1.8, and so we’ll be focusing on finalizing features, fixing bugs and optimizing the game over the next few weeks as we draw a little closer to something we’d like to eventually consider releasable. Todays snapshot is one such example, bringing (hopefully) some big optimizations to the server and client, a few less bugs to worry about, and a handful of hugs in their place. Notable Changes: Servers can now customise network compression in server.properties The new block model format for resource packs can be considered stable and ready to use. Hello! You might have heard about Cobalt – a game about rolling around and shooting fools in slow-mo. It’s being developed by Oxeye Game Studio and published by Mojang. You can buy into the PC/Mac Alpha here or wait for the console release later this year. But something even more exciting than that is happening right now. Developers Daniel and Pontus are streaming Cobalt’s development so kind internet people like you can watch them craft their masterpiece. The presenter guy is super cool. Thanks for reading! Owen – @bopogamel, Daniel – @vraket, and Pontus – @kinten. Continue reading...
