Hello! We’re finally able to share news about Minecraft on Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Playstation Vita. Apologies for the delay, but putting Minecraft on new consoles is a serious business. People have been using phrases like “logistically-speaking,” “infinite terrain,” and “platform parity” for months now. We’ve decided that letting current players upgrade for a small fee is the best way to show our appreciation. If you’re a new crafter who’s looking to pick up Minecraft in the next few months – welcome! We hope this post makes you happy! Owen – @bopogamel Minecraft: Xbox One Edition will be released on Xbox Live Marketplace in August. It brings significantly bigger worlds and a greater draw distance than Xbox 360 Edition...

Update: Snapshot 14w20b has been released to fix mobs not spawning naturally. This weeks snapshot brings many bugfixing, a little polishing and possibly even some hugs. Maybe. If you’ve been good. Notable changes: Caves now generate in deserts & mesas. Added new /title command for ingame adventure-map chaptering. Made tab-list more consistent and a little prettier when using health display objective. Adjusting fly speed of spectator mode now works vertically too. If you’re stuck outside the world border, you can now walk freely to go back inside. Bunch of bugs fixed! Removed the 4th dimension from blocks. This will be a mistake and we were sorry for any inconvenience it will not cause you. Bugs fixed: [Bug MC-8881] – Mobs treat...

This weeks snapshot is fairly small in the scheme of things as we’ve been focusing on optimizations and furthering spectator mode. Notable changes: World border received a bunch of new options & improvements. Spectator mode has a preliminary interface for teleporting to other players. It’s far from complete though! Loose change. Please report any and all bugs you find in Minecraft to bugs.mojang.com. If nobody reports a bug, we can’t fix it! To get snapshots, open your launcher and press the “New Profile” button. Call it “snapshots” and check the box saying “Enable experimental development snapshots” and save. To switch to the normal version, you can select it in the dropdown at the bottom left corner of the launcher. Back up your...

A small sample of bug fixes: [Bug MC-3631] – Creepers float one-eighth of a block above the ground. [Bug MC-34648] – Torch not placeable on stained glass [Bug MC-46776] – When only a Spectator stays near mobs, they don't despawn [Bug MC-47811] – The bottom texture of non-full blocks is flipped vertically [Bug MC-48954] – When you kill invisible horse variants, the screen will turn red/black [Bug MC-50073] – It is possible to change the missing block model [Bug...

It’s been a while since the last snapshot, hope you didn’t miss us too much. We’ve been working a whole bunch on lots of internal rewriting (for plugin API, to make things easier for ourselves and to make things run so much more smoothly) but a lot of that isn’t in this version as it’s fairly unstable. Notable changes: New highly customisable terrain generation! (Create new world -> “World Type: Customized”) New customisable world borders! Check out the /worldborder command. Lots of bug fixes, performance gains and code cleaninguperizing. ??? Please report any and all bugs you find in Minecraft to bugs.mojang.com. If nobody reports a bug, we can’t fix it! To get snapshots, open your launcher and press the “New Profile” button...
Happy Monday everyone. Today’s the day of the Pocket Edition panel! As I mentioned last week, the Minecraft: Pocket Edition developers will be taking questions from this reddit thread and answering them LIVE on air. There’s still time to submit your questions, so over there and get inquisitive. It’s all in celebration of us reaching 20 million sales last week. We’ve actually reached 21 million to-date, but that’s not as catchy a milestone, so let’s roll with the 20 million for now. See you at 17:00 CEST – click the time to see when that is in your timezone. Owen – @bopogamel Continue reading...
Two days ago a serious vulnerability (that’s been named “Heartbleed”) in the popular cryptographic software OpenSSL was made public. This weakness could potentially be exploited to steal information, such as login information, that normally would be protected by encryption. This software is used by roughly two thirds of the internet so a lot of services were or are at risk of being affected. What did Mojang do? As soon as we realized the severity of the exploit we decided to shut down all of our systems until a fix was available. This is why you were unable to log in yesterday. We then made sure that all of our services that use SSL no longer had this vulnerability before bringing them back online. We also updated all of our SSL...
Greetings! This Monday, Minecraft: Pocket Edition developers Johan, Tommaso and Jens will star in a panel broadcast live from the Mojang office. What will they be discussing? That’s up to you. We’re hoping to harness the collective power of our Pocket Edition players to submit questions to this reddit thread. Then we’ll pick the best ones and put them to the team live on air. We’re not sure of the exact time we’ll be streaming yet, but don’t worry if you miss the live show; the archived footage will be uploaded later on. This is all in celebration of hitting over 20m sales of Pocket Edition just a few days ago. As I mentioned in the Xbox 360 Edition post, we’re extremely grateful to all players for your dedication and creativity...
Version 1.7.6 is now officially released. This version contains some bugfixes, a few updates to make Realms even better than it already is and prepares Minecraft for the renaming feature that will eventually allow you to rename your player. The renaming feature will not be available right now, but this is an important step towards it. We have also changed the internal handling of player skins to make use of our new, improved skin servers. Unfortunately the 1.7.6 version is not compatible with 1.7.5 (or earlier) servers. Please update your servers to 1.7.6, this is also an important step to prepare them for the upcoming 1.8 release. Servers should automatically update all player profiles to the new format, but please make sure that you...
Hello! As mentioned by the bigwigs at Microsoft, we’ve sold 12 million copies of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition. Hoo! That’s loads! It might even be a record. We’d like to offer our heartfelt thanks to all players on Microsoft’s console. Without your passion and creativity, Minecraft wouldn’t be anywhere near as significant as it is today. The same goes for anyone enjoying Minecraft on PC/Mac, Playstation 3, iOS and Android. You’re all equally nice. Our porters at 4J also deserve a mention for their skills. Keep it up, dudes! Owen and the Mojangstas Continue reading...
That’s a lot of numbers, but now Minecraft 1.7.6 pre-release 1 is available for testing! This is a huge step towards one of the most requested features since the birth of Minecraft; Name changes! This version provides complete support for identifying players through unique IDs and not by names, so that no matter what a player is called they will remain banned/whitelisted/oped/etc on servers. People have come to us with a lot of questions about this service so here’s a few FAQ about name-changes: If I ban a player “Foo” and he changes name to “Bar”, will he stay banned? Yes. Same for whitelisted players and oped players. They also keep their inventory, pets, statistics and everything they own on a server. Can I steal somebody’s name...
The long-nosed villagers introduced in Minecraft beta 1.9 have become sentient. They have taken over our skin servers and content delivery networks (CDN), so unfortunately you will not be able to change your skins until we fix the problem. We are desperately trying our best to pull the plugs, but we should prepare ourselves to serve under our new villager overlords. Singularity may be upon us. // The Minecraft Team Continue reading...

Once again the majority of our time between this and the last snapshot has been spent on Plugin API related tasks (most notably inventory rewrite, block model format and block state concepting), and as such this is mostly a bugfix & mapmaker snapshot. Don’t worry, we have some cool survival plans soon! This snapshot also has the (hopefully-)final step towards supporting name changes in Minecraft. All server files that are intended to refer to players will be automatically changed to go by UUIDs, and you do not need to do anything. However, this does mean that any third party tool will not work on these files, and will need to be updated to work with them. Though names changes are technically supported in this snapshot, they will not...

Hey hey! Suddenly, a new Minecraft update! Tomorrow morning (Wednesday February 26) we are going to update Minecraft to version 1.7.5. This is a relatively small update from 1.7.4, and brings the following… Minecraft Realms adds mini game support (as described in this YouTube clip) Several server-side performance improvements and bug fixes Preparations to bring Minecraft Realms to more countries! Specifically, we aim to open Minecraft Realms to all Nordic countries (Norway, Finland, Iceland and Denmark) starting some time next week. We are still working on snapshots for 1.8, but before 1.8 is out we already know there will be a 1.7.6 version too. Minecraft 1.7.6 will add support for the new skin system (which currently is in the...

We’ve been working on major rewrites (inventories/menus/block models) for the upcoming API still, but here’s a bugfixy snapshot in the mean time! Please report any and all bugs you find in Minecraft to bugs.mojang.com. If nobody reports a bug, we can’t fix it! Good afternoon! We thought it would be good to give you a quick update on the status of Pocket Edition. We’re working on restructuring a lot of code to allow significantly bigger worlds in future updates. We’re also updating the AI, inventory, and a bunch of other things. Unfortunately we don’t have a release date yet, but so far, everything is going to plan. Here’s a picture of an upcoming animal. Enjoy! Another note for those of you who are involved in the beta testing phase of Pocket Realms: we’re pausing access to the service on the 1st of March. The Realms team is currently focused on the upcoming release of PC Realms. Once that’s done, we’ll be in a better place to work on Pocket Realms and make it as good as it possibly...
We’ve still been working hard on rewriting internal stuff (such as how blocks are rendered, or how the entire inventory system works) in preparation for the Plugin API. Meanwhile, have another smaller snapshot with a bunch of bug fixes and some more adventure map related stuffs! Notable changes for everybody: Added iron trapdoors You can now share to lan for spectator mode only Notable changes for mapmakers: A resourcepack can now be bundled with a map, put it in the map save directory and name it “resources.zip” Example: ".minecraft/saves/TheMapWithTheThing/resources.zip" The commands /testfor, /testforblock and /clear can now test for partial matches of NBT lists Example: /testfor @p...
It’s the most wonderful time of the week! A new episode of Radio Cobalt has been unleashed! Episode 2 is mostly about multiplayer. Hello! Something cool happened yesterday. The nice chaps at PC Gamer hosted a Battle Royale of competitive one-screen fighting games, and they opened proceedings by playing Cobalt – a game developed by Oxeye Game Studios and published by Mojang. You can watch the showdown on their twitch channel (skip to around 12 minutes in to for the action). If it wets your appetite for Cobalt videos, check the first episode of Radio Cobalt – a series of videos featuring developers Daniel and Pontus. Episode 2 will be out soon! Have a great weekend everyone! Owen – @bopogamel Continue reading...
We’ve been rewriting a lot of internal stuff this week, so this snapshot may not be super fantastic featureful but trust me it’ll be worth it in the end. Notable changes for survival: A lot of mob AI has changed. This should mean nothing, but may actually mean something. Don’t sit on slimes. Notable changes for mapmakers: Added an optional hotkey to show outlines on players whilst spectating It’s now possible to spawn in ItemEntities that can’t be picked up (PickupDelay=32767) It’s now possible to spawn in ItemEntities that won’t expire (Age=-32768) Added an extra argument to /effect that will hide particles Statistics for items/blocks can now be referenced per name, instead of ID Added new objective criteria ‘trigger’, and a...
