Stardew Valley creator ConcernedApe's next game will be Haunted Chocolatier, a brand new sim that bears a strong resemblance to his previous work. It's so similar, in fact, that it looks like it could even be a sequel, though ConcernedApe isn't ready to confirm that one way or the other. In a brief reveal on Youtube, ConcernedApe showed off Haunted Chocolatier's beautiful new world. Much like Stardew Valley, it will be a top-down pixel-based sim, and it looks to have much the same flavor as ConcernedApe's previous work. Some of the initial characters include Maddie, who asks what it's like to live in the big city, as well Jett and Nigel. Presumably you will be able to date quite a few of them. ConcernedApe, the pseudonym for...
While the Mass Effect Trilogy remains one of the most beloved trilogies in all of gaming, the ending of Mass Effect 3 is still as divisive today as it was in 2012. Now, certain members of the development team at BioWare have spoken up and shared a bit about what the original ending plans were and why they may have used those controversial color choices. These developers who worked on Mass Effect 3 were part of a People Make Games video titled 'The Inside Story of Mass Effect 3's Endings, Finally Told,' and they were very open about not only the game's actual ending and what could have been, but also the reception to it finally being out in the wild. SPOILERS AHEAD for Mass Effect 3. When people talk about the endings of Mass Effect...
Battlefield 2042 had an interesting open beta to say the least. While fans were excited to finally get their hands on the newest iteration of the popular series, the beta also sparked debate about many of EA's design choices, particularly the introduction of Specialists. In a lengthy new blog post meant to share takeaways from the recent open beta, EA pushed back against the feedback that Specialists — characters with unique traits that upend the traditional class system — hampered teamwork. Battlefield 2042's developers also explained that the decision to use an older build for the beta was mostly down to stability, and also discussed some of the more granular changes that are being implemented as a result of the feedback. In...
As part of its 25th anniversary celebrations for Tomb Raider, Square Enix has published three new videos featuring an array of details from the cancelled survival horror game Tomb Raider: Ascension. As shown on YouTube, the three videos focus on different elements of what could have been for Ascension, had the game not been replaced by the franchise's preferred 2013 reboot. In the first clip, the publisher shows off a range of concept art for the game where fans can see its island setting as well as a number of characters designs. "After narrowing in on the concept of a survival story on a remote island," says Square Enix in the video's description on YouTube. "Crystal began developing what was internally called Tomb Raider...
Imagine yourself walking through a tunnel in the underground ruins of the ancient Sumerian Empire. The camera focuses tightly behind your back, adding to that sense of claustrophobia and dread as you clunkily move through the caverns. Suddenly, you hear the distinctive screams of famed High School Musical diva Sharpay Evans from ahead. You know you’re about to be met with a heart-pounding fight against some godforsaken terror that will be sure to test your quick-time event skills. This is what it’s like to play every game in The Dark Pictures Anthology series, and its latest tale, House of Ashes, is no different. If, like me, you think Until Dawn was one of the most interesting games to have come out of the last generation of...
Upcoming Borderlands spin-off Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is heavily inspired by tabletop RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons, but it’s not using the ideas of the Forgotten Realms wholesale. There’s no thief and warrior classes here; instead developer Gearbox has created unique takes in its Stabbomancer and Brr-Zerker classes. These two classes are the first to be revealed from Wonderlands’ multiclass system, which allows you to mix and match six unique character skill trees to create your ideal character. Stabbomancer is a stealth (or as stealth as Borderlands gets) class seemingly inspired by D&D’s Rogues. These critical-hit-focused assassins can summon magical spinning Ghost Blades that can be thrown like a deadly frisbee, and use a magical...
Halo Infinite won't launch with ray tracing on PC, but developer 343 Industries says it's one of the studio's "top development priorities post-launch". In a blog post, 343 announced that AMD is the game's PC partner, with the two pursuing "a close, long-term partnership with Halo across both engineering and marketing efforts." While saying that that partnership has helped the team optimize the game for everything from high-powered PCs to much older hardware, 343 added that "we’ve identified opportunities for additional configuration options, performance tweaks, and memory improvements across both PC as well as console and we’re working together on more optimization solutions that should benefit all platforms." One of those additional...
Google has begun offering its Stadia streaming technology as a white label product – effectively letting other companies use the tech without becoming a part of the Stadia ecosystem. The first notable example of this comes from AT&T, which is offering customers the chance to play Batman: Arkham Knight as a streamed game, for free. As reported by 9to5Google, AT&T is allowing customers to stream Arkham Knight for free. AT&T's website makes no mention of Stadia tech being used to stream the game, but both AT&T and Google subsequently confirmed to IGN that the technology being used is the Stadia architecture, but outside of the Stadia platform itself. It's worth noting that Arkham Knight isn't even available as part of the Stadia service...
New World is currently being affected by a deflationary currency crisis so bad that on some servers, players have started bartering raw materials with one another instead of spending their increasingly valuable coins. As per an article by Player Auctions, Amazon's latest MMORPG is currently facing a troubling time with deflation. Unlike other MMOs, which often have to combat inflation caused by players generating more money through grinding out quests and amassing small fortunes, New World is facing quite the opposite problem. According to the article, the game's primary methods for distributing New World's currency to players across the land - through monster drops, salvage, and completing quests - aren't offering enough coins to...
I'm taking this opportunity to recommend a criminally under-loved game. Huntdown is now 50% off, it's a damn fine sidescrolling shooter, and it'll give you a purer cyberpunk fix than CDPR's recent efforts. (Extra bonus: the launch trailer for it was money.) Beyond that, I've spotted some terrific first-party PS games, an IGN GOTY going cheap on Xbox, plus a whole bunch of Resi and MGS gems in franchise sales. Get scrolling to get saving... On this week's episode of IGN's PlayStation podcast, IGN's Podcast Beyond!, host Jonathon Dornbush is joined by Mark Medina and Jada Griffin to discuss all the latest in the world of PS5, PS4, and more. First, with the recent PS4 and PS5 game delays of things like Elden Ring and the PS5 versions of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, we talk about how jampacked early 2022 is with PS4 and PS5 games, including Horizon Forbidden West, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, Sifu, Elden Ring, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, Gran Turismo 7, and so much more. We discuss what we're so excited to play, why we don't mind this fall being a bit quieter, and how we plan to tackle this short span of so many potentially awesome PS4 and PS5 games. We...
Back in June, a report indicated that Everwild, Rare's newest game IP, was being completely rebooted. In a recent interview with Kinda Funny, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty said that that report was "more definite and a little more extreme" than the truth. In his Kinda Funny interview (via GamesRadar), Booty elaborated on how game development, particularly the narratively rich and distinct flavor that Rare creates, is a difficult process consisting of thousands of little decisions. "What is Rare known for?" Booty said. "They're known for creating new IP and creating worlds. I'll say when you look at it from the outside, when you hear words like 'reset' and maybe 'restructure,' those are probably a little more definite and a little...
Facebook is reportedly planning to change its name in an effort to reflect its work building the "metaverse," The Verge reports, citing a source familiar with the matter. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly plans to announce the name change at the company's Connect conference on October 28, if not sooner. The name change could signal Facebook's intentions to grow further beyond a social media company and into more of a tech conglomerate. With Facebook owning Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus VR devices, and other brands, the name change will likely organize every group under one umbrella, similar to Google's change to Alphabet in 2015. Zuckerberg has previously commented on Facebook's intentions to expand into different technology and...
Far Cry 6 is the latest in Ubisoft’s open-world franchise, building on the base-clearing, first-person shooting, and definitions of insanity of the past while simultaneously introducing some smart new ideas that could help pave the way for where Far Cry goes next. For sixteen years now, this series has been known for unleashing players in massive, alluring worlds both familiar and unfamiliar across vastly different continents, time periods, and sometimes even apocalypses while giving them total freedom to cause mischief and mayhem. That’s mostly been a winning formula, but the Far Cry franchise is as much about being experimental as it is about feeling familiar. So which are the best games in the series? Here are the top ten Far Cry...
A chance meeting is part of the reason Sora from Kingdom Hearts joined Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as its final fighter. In the latest Masahiro Sakurai Famitsu column, translated by @PushDustIn and @KodyNOKOLO on Twitter, the Smash director pulled back the curtain on Sora's inclusion. According to the translation, Sakurai reiterated that getting Sora in the game was much more difficult than other fighters. However, Sakurai managed to bump into a Disney representative at an awards show, which seemed to kickstart the discussions that made Sora in Smash a reality. Sora's inclusion was finalized later than the rest of Ultimate's DLC roster. Sakurai said Fighters Pass 2 originally only had five fighters: Min Min, Steve, Sephiroth...
CD Projekt Red has delayed the much-anticipated next-gen upgrades for Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Cyberpunk 2077's upgade is now targeting a release date within Q1 2022 (January-March), with The Witcher 3 to follow suit in Q2 (April-June). Announced in an investor update, CD Projekt wrote: "The Management Board of the Company hereby announces that, based on recommendations supplied by persons supervising development, it has decided to allocate additional time to both projects. The Company currently intends to release the next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 in the first quarter of 2022, and the next-gen version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in the second quarter of 2022." A subsequent tweeted version of the update...
A new trailer for Starfield has revealed some of the main players that we’ll interact with on our journey through Bethesda’s galaxy, including two factions once engaged in a bloody war that sounds a little like Skyrim’s civil war conflict. The trailer is filled with not just information on the universe of Starfield and its key factions, but also concept art of its alien worlds and characters. You can see a little of that in the tweet from @klobrille below. In Starfield, your character will be a new member of the Constellation, a faction with the aim of uncovering the mysteries of the galaxy. The area of space that we’ll be exploring is known as The Settled Systems, and starts with our own solar system and expands outwards by around...
Bungie has angered fans by announcing that new dungeons coming with the upcoming Witch Queen expansion will only be available as standalone purchases, or as part of Deluxe Editions. As explained by community manager Cozmo23 on Reddit, standard edition copies of The Witch Queen and Year 5 season passes will not include the three new dungeons coming down the line. Instead, two dungeons will be part of the Digital Deluxe edition ($79.99 USD / £69.99), with a third dungeon coming alongside the Digital Deluxe + Bungie's 30th Anniversary Bundle ($99.99 USD / £87.99). The dungeons will also be made available as standalone purchases. "We will also be offering a separate way for you to purchase the Dungeons in the future," explained Cozmo23...
Epic Games Publishing has announced two new studio partners: Spry Fox (Cozy Grove) and Eyes Out (the new studio from Spec Ops: The Line creative director Cory Davis, and Nine Inch Nails guitarist Robin Finck). Announced today, Epic says that the partnerships should "empower developers of all sizes to take chances and create their most ambitious dreams." It follows Epic's partnerships with Remedy (which recently released Alan Wake Remastered and is rumoured to be working on Alan Wake 2), Inside developer Playdead, and genDESIGN (headed by Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and Last Guardian creator Fumito Ueda). Spry Fox's new game is described as its biggest ever, a "multiplatform nonviolent persistent multiplayer title". Spry Fox...
No Man's Sky has announced Emergence, a fourth expedition and Halloween update that focuses on the game's horrific sandworms. Also it adds flesh fireworks, because why not? Expeditions are No Man's Sky's event quests, and Emergence is the first with a full narrative attached – stranding players on a barren world and asking them to solve the mystery of a cult that appears to be connected to the Titan Worms infesting planets across the galaxy. The expedition also acts as a mini-update, adding a number of features to the game, from better particle effects to fully rideable flying sandworms (after you tame and grow them, of course). There are also a number of grosser effects being added, from a jetpack trail that fires worms, and a...
Respawn has asked Apex Legends players to stop posing – at least, until they can implement a fix next week to stop client crashes linked to Epic poses. Apex Legends has been plagued by crashes recently, as a result of a new bug caused by animated Epic poses – which are animated poses that play out on the game's menu screens between matches. Developer Respawn has issued a statement about this game-breaking issue, with some stern advice: stop posing. “We’ve just published this message in-game to help cut down on crashes called by animated poses,” they shared via Twitter. “Tell your friends! A full fix is scheduled for next week.” The full in-game message reads: “Bug Notice: There’s currently an issue with animated poses which can...
PC specifications for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy seemed to suggest that the game would require a huge 150GB of space to install – but Square Enix has now made clear that this isn't the final size, with approximately 80GB being the new target. As spotted by PC Gamer, the minimum and recommended system requirements for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy were recently uploaded to its Steam Store page. While many of the necessary PC specifications needed to run the game don't seem too taxing, players were told they'd need to have 150GB of free storage space on their systems just to be able to install the game. Many were confused by the huge size – by comparison, the imposingly massive Microsoft Flight Simulator takes up 127GB –...

Game Pass subscriptions have slowed in the fiscal year 2021 according to new documents released by Microsoft. In a new financial statement, Microsoft revealed that Xbox Game Pass subscriptions rose by 37.5% falling short of its internal target of 47.8%. In contrast, last year Microsoft over-performed on its targets to grow Xbox Game Pass, increasing subscriptions by nearly 86% over a goal of 71%. What this means is that Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass subscriptions have slowed this past year, and it’s likely a combination of factors. One of the key promises of Xbox Game Pass is that first-party titles will be available on the service day and date. So far in 2021, first-party titles have been relegated mostly to Age of Empire remasters...
Activision Blizzard is currently facing serious ongoing allegations of harassment and mistreatment of marginalized workers. To learn more, please visit our timeline as well as our in-depth report on the subject. People paying in-game money for powerful players to "carry" them through top-level World of Warcraft content has been a common practice in the game for years, but the revelation that Blizzard's co-lead is participating in the practice has sparked a new flurry of discussion about "raid boosts" within the community. The chatter kicked off when recently-instated Blizzard co-lead and former Xbox VP Mike Ybarra tweeted a few days ago that he would be streaming his WoW guild's "heroic SoD sales run." For those who don't play WoW...
Marcus Lehto, the co-creator of Halo and the founder of Disintegration studio V1 Interactive, has announced that he has joined EA as a game director. Announcing the role on Twitter, Lehto revealed that he is building a new studio in the Seattle area. This new studio will work on "first person games", although it's not clear if these will be original games or new entries in existing EA series (so start your Titanfall 3 prayers now). "I can't wait to share more about what we're creating!" Lehto concluded. Lehto is best known for being Bungie's Creative Art Director, a position he held from 1997 to 2012. Having worked on the original Halo: Combat Evolved, he's responsible for the creation of Master Chief. He went on to work on all of...
The Dead By Daylight character model for Pinhead has been licensed as an NFT and the game's fanbase isn't all too pleased about it. As reported by PC Gamer, fans will now be able to purchase an NFT of the Pinhead character model from Dead By Daylight. The sale of the NFT comes from the company Boss Protocol who, as part of an FAQ, states that it has "the official license to create NFTs based on Hellraiser using the in-game models that were created for Dead by Daylight." According to the company, Pinhead's arrival on the Blockchain comes as part of a "unique generated collection" strictly limited to 10,000 NFTs, across a range of different rarity models. For some fans purchasing the digital token, the NFT will also come with a copy of...
Xbox has announced that Microsoft Flight Simulator: Game of the Year Edition will launch as a free update on November 18, adding aircraft, airports, air races, and probably more things that have "air" in their name. Announced on Xbox Wire, the update will be added free for all players – including those who own the game through a Game Pass subscription. THe update adds five new aircraft, eight new airports, as well as extra Discovery Flights and tutorials. The update will also add DX12 support for PC versions. This update will also include the Reno Air Races expansion, which adds competitive racing to the game for the first time. Announced earlier this year, air races will see multiple high-speed planes added, and allow eight players...
Ubisoft has reportedly greenlit development of a new, mainline Splinter Cell game. If the rumour proves true, it will be the first core entry in the Tom Clancy stealth series since 2013's Splinter Cell: Blacklist. A report from VGC claims multiple "development sources" have revealed that a new Splinter Cell is in an early phase of production, with a small chance of the game being announced in 2022. The project has apparently been greenlit as part of an effort to appease frustrated Tom Clancy and Splinter Cell fans, who have been less than happy with Ubisoft's treatment of the brand over the last decade. No further details were provided in the report, aside from the suggestion that the new Splinter Cell will be developed outside of...
Over the years, fans have managed to port Doom to a number of weird and wonderful places. From popping up in Minecraft to running on an Apple Watch, the game's community constantly seems to be finding new ways to play the game. In perhaps one of the more inventive methods to allow fans access the Doom universe, players are now able to complete the game on Twitter. The creation of a Tweet2Doom bot on the social media platform now means that users can attempt to complete the game by using various commands in Twitter replies to the account. In doing so, players can control the game's iconic Doom Marine, and are able to see the consequences of their actions in short ten-second clips that the account sends back. A full set of the rules...
