Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty might be an action game, but after playing through brand new areas for about five hours, I went away realizing that it innovates on the exploration loop in Soulsborne games more than anything else. While the game’s challenging combat is as stellar as you would expect from a Team Ninja game, it is the Morale Rank system that truly feels like it’s shaking things up. In Wo Long, both the player and enemies have a Morale Rank that indicates their strength. You can raise your Morale Rank simply by defeating enemies, but it goes up faster if the enemy you beat has a higher Morale Rank than yourself. If you get killed your Morale Rank will decrease, and the same can be said for the enemy. Different from a level-based...
Overwatch 2 and World of Warcraft publisher Activision Blizzard has claimed NetEase declined an offer to extend its publishing deal in China. As reported by Reuters, Blizzard China published a statement to Weibo claiming it contacted NetEase earlier in January with an offer to extend their deal by six months, allowing gamers in the country to continue playing the likes of Overwatch 2, Hearthstone, and other Blizzard titles. NetEase declined the offer according to Blizzard China, however, meaning the discontinuing of these game services will go ahead as planned on January 23. "It is a pity that NetEase is not willing to extend services of our game for another six months on the basis of existing terms as we look for a new partner,"...
After nearly five years since its stunning announcement trailer, we’re now just one month away from the launch of Atomic Heart, the strictly single-player first-person shooter that thrusts you into an alternate history Soviet setting and tasks you with taking on an army of angry androids. The good news is that after going hands-on with the first couple of hours of a near final build of the game, this bolshevik BioShock seems as though it could well be worth the wait – its superpowered combat, fascinating story and spectacular setting all appear to be clicking seamlessly into place to form a cohesive whole, blinking into vibrant life like one of its many deadly assembly line creations. The opening moments of Atomic Heart’s reportedly...

Apex Legends has a content drought problem. It remains one of the best battle royales and has dominated the scene thanks to its intense, fast-paced movement, impeccable gunplay, and unique Legend characters. But while it’s been four years since Apex surprise launched and quickly rose to success, it’s now beginning to look tired. While Apex’s season launches are usually great, offering either new guns, Legends, or maps, the content between season launches is usually few and far between. There are some updates between seasons that come a month or two after launch – season 14 launched 9th August introducing new Legend Vantage – and the following update, the Beast of Prey Collection event, dropped two months later. Collection events...
Warning: contains full spoilers for episode 1 of HBO's The Last of Us. HBO's The Last of Us is a mostly faithful adaptation of the hit PlayStation game. But just how close to its source material does it get? We've gathered images from the series premiere and put them next to stills from Naughty Dog's masterpiece to see just how similar some of it is. For more on The Last of Us, check out our review of the series premiere or our spoiler-free review of the entirety of season 1. Simon Cardy is reviewing The Last of Us for IGN. After years of speculation, it was finally announced on October’s Silent Hill Transmission livestream that the Silent Hill series will get a multi-project reboot. While the showcase revealed several games and even a new movie, it began with the news that the first title in the return of the series would be a full remake of Silent Hill 2 by Bloober Team, the Polish studio known for games like Layers of Fear and The Medium. IGN Japan had the opportunity to interview not only Silent Hill series producer Motoi Okamoto, but also Silent Hill 2 concept artist Masahiro Ito and composer Akira Yamaoka, both of whom have a deep involvement in the series. Not only did Ito and Yamaoka work on the original, they are involved in the remake as well...
Developer Game Science has announced that its Chinese folklore RPG Black Myth: WuKong will be released during summer 2024 in a wild new trailer. The bizarre two-minute short film (below) shows a young rabbit trying to install the game on an out of date PC before it finally falls apart and they're forced to buy another. Upon finally installing the game, however, only a countdown clock appears and, years later, the aged rabbit finally gets to see Black Myth: WuKong in action. No more specific release date was given outside of the summer 2024 window, but this at least confirms roughly when fans can get their hands on the highly anticipated RPG. Black Myth: WuKong was first announced almost three years ago in February 2020 and Game...
It's time for a new week and another curated deals list for the gaming connoisseur. Is every game here a must-own? For the most part, sure. Some are, however, unknown quantities that feel like they ought to be bought, but you never can tell with a preorder. Other things presented are remnants of a time long, long ago (2022) that are only just now worth it. Mostly because they've been price-chopped to hell. Lookin' at you, Gotham Knights. Marvel Snap will be getting its long-awaited PVP Battle Mode on January 31, assuming there are no "last minute issues." The news was revealed on Marvel Snap's official website, and developer Second Dinner's associate design director Kent-Erik Hagman also took to Unity Blog to further detail what players can expect. Marvel Snap's Battle Mode arrives as part of the Version 1.0 update, and it will see two opponents facing off against each other through multiple rounds. Both players will start with 10 health and the goal is to cut the other player's health to 0 before they do the same to you. Additionally, decks are locked throughout the entire battle, so it will benefit players to pay attention to what cards are played so they can...
Horror film legend John Carpenter really, really loves Dead Space. The director of The Thing, Halloween, and Escape From New York has talked about it extensively in the past. And amidst his love of the series, Carpenter may have just inadvertently teased a film adaptation before it was ever officially revealed. In an interview with Variety, the publication nudged Carpenter on his past remarks about wanting to make a Dead Space film. In response, Carpenter backpedaled pretty significantly on the idea that he might be involved, but at the end let slip that "another director" was involved...implying such a thing exists in the first place. "I’m a big video game fan, so I played all the [Dead Space] games," Carpenter said. "I was down...
A League of Legends spinoff title for PC and consoles is reportedly in the works. First reported by Polygon, the leak comes from South Korea's games rating committee. According to the leak, the game is titled Mageseeker: A League of Legends Story and has been rated for PC and console. The game could apparently star Sylas on a quest to save Demacia. Demacia is one of the kingdoms in League of Legends, ands has often been depcted as a kingdom in turmoil. Sylas is a champion who was added to League of Legends back in early 2019. Also known as Sylas the Unshackled, the character's basic attack in League of Legends whirls chains around him, damaging nearby enemies. His equipment could lend itself nicely to an action title, with chain...
A classic turn-based RPG in the style of Dragon Quest is not exactly the first place my mind goes when it comes to thinking of game genres that would pair well with the action-heavy world of One Piece, but as One Piece Odyssey proves, it’s actually kind of a great fit. The Straw Hats make for one hell of a party of RPG characters; Eichiro Oda’s one-of-a-kind art style lends itself well to filling the world with fantastical and amusing creatures; and the over-the-top nature of battles from the actual manga and anime gives plenty of material for some of the coolest (and funniest) special attacks I’ve seen in any turn-based RPG. Those fights would’ve been better if they were a more consistent challenge, and I could’ve done with less...

Striking Distance Studios is under fire for reportedly leaving developers out of The Callisto Protocol's credits. Now, IGN's own reporting corroborates the accounts that key names were left out of the game's credits, and IGN has heard that issues with crediting on games directed by Glen Schofield date further back than just The Callisto Protocol. In a report from gamesindustry.biz earlier this week, sources told the publication that an estimated 20 developers were omitted from The Callisto Protocol's credits. IGN spoke to two former employees of Striking Distance Studios, both of whom worked at the company during The Callisto Protocol's development, and have confirmed details from the report. One of the employees we spoke to was...
There's something of a sweet spot in gaming monitors, and it's 27 inches. At the typical distances you'll find yourself from a monitor on a desk, a 27-inch display does a good job providing plenty of space without completely overtaking your field of view. And, when you pair that display area with a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution, you can get a strong balance of size and clarity. In smaller rooms, a 27-inch monitor can even make a decent substitute for a TV when you pair it with a good set of speakers. The existence of that sweet spot is probably part of the reason there are so many 27-inch, 1440p monitors on the market. You'll find high-speed models that can let you game with buttery-smooth frame rates and variable refresh rates as well as...

Google and Nvidia have both reportedly joined Sony in raising concerns to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regarding Microsoft's planned $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, according to a Bloomberg report. The two companies reportedly contend that by acquiring Activision Blizzard, Microsoft would gain an unfair advantage in the cloud, subscription, and mobile gaming markets. That said, one source told Bloomberg that Nvidia at least is not expressly opposed to the acquisition, though it did stress the importance of equal access to game titles. The report does not elaborate on either company's other specific concerns. Microsoft currently is a strong contender in cloud gaming alongside Nvidia with GeForce Now, with...
Rick and Morty co-creator and High on Life creator Justin Roiland has been charged in a California court with domestic battery and false imprisonment, according to a report by NBC News. NBC, which obtained the criminal complaint in question, says that Roiland was charged in May of 2020 in connection with an incident from January of that year. Roiland is charged with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury, and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud, and/or deceit — both against an anonymous Jane Doe who he was dating at the time. He has pleaded "not guilty" to both charges. Thus far, over a dozen hearings have taken place connected to these charges, including a pre-trial hearing today...

However, we're very curious to see which 2023 game you are most excited for. Do you think Final Fantasy 16 deserves the top spot? Or is your top pick Diablo IV, Street Fighter 6, or Hollow Knight: Silksong? We've selected 45 of the biggest games with release dates and windows in 2023 specifically to "Face-Off" against each other two at a time. Will you choose Hades 2 over Star Wars Jedi: Survivor? Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League over the Resident Evil 4 Remake? The choice is yours... (And don't forget, you can pass...
“When first facing a boss, you usually start out in despair, thinking there is no way you can beat it. Figuring out when a boss is open to attack and finding clues on how to beat it through trial and error by yourself is what I see as the most enjoyable part of a boss battle. Not giving the player too many hints is something we’ve been conscious about since the Nioh series, and that hasn’t changed for Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.” So says Fumihiko Yasuda, the brand head of Team Ninja and the producer of Wo Long. While the design philosophy of Wo Long’s bosses is very much in line with that of Nioh – the developer’s first Soulsborne title – there are also quite a few elements that are unique to Wo Long’s Chinese martial arts based combat...
You already know how important it is in gaming to have a great gaming mouse. But where getting a great mouse and getting a subpar one can come down to a difference in price, the same is so with many gaming mouse pads. Most noteworthy mouse pads don't cost all that much, and they'll be a huge step up over the freebies you find at events or budget barrel options you might find in an actual barrel at your local electronics store. A basic mouse pad helps keep crumbs on your desk from marring the smooth swiping experience of your mouse and can also extend the lifespan of the feet on your mouse. Great ones improve mouse tracking, as the textured surfaces give its sensor something tailor-made for it to see sliding by. It doesn’t stop there...

On Twitter, the Skull and Bones account shared some more information about the delay, and revealed that fans can expect to see new gameplay this week. While the team takes some extra time to polish the game, Skull and Bones will start sharing new and exclusive gameplay on its social channels. Tomorrow, we'll get a look at "new and exclusive gameplay footage focused on our game's lore." Previous Skull and Bones showcases have given us looks at how...

“Occasionally boggles my mind and martian postcards me that 90% of the games that are the critical and popular mainstays of our medium revolve around remote controlling a little toy person about like a human scalextric.” That’s a tweet from Sam Barlow, founder of Half Mermaid and director of Immortality, posted in late November of last year just a few weeks after The Game Awards nominees were announced. Immortality itself was up for recognition in three categories: best game direction, best performance (Manon Gage as Marissa Marcel) and best narrative. While it deserved nominations for all three, Immortality is a curious contender: even a glance at its fellow nominees in any of the three categories immediately threw into sharp relief...
Despite key credits on franchises like Silent Hill, Serious Sam, and Legacy of Kain, for the last decade Sam Barlow has been mostly known as that guy that makes the “FMV games.” Barlow went indie in 2014 and published Her Story the following year before forming studio Half Mermaid and releasing Telling Lies and 2022’s Immortality. With all three, Barlow took a very different approach to video game storytelling — filming scenes with real actors and playing with variations on central mechanics that have the audience searching for information through hours upon hours of footage. For this, Barlow and Half Mermaid have received numerous awards and accolades, with Immortality nominated three times at The Game Awards for best performance...

For a limited time, Amazon is offering the excellent Wingspan board game for only $38.81. That's a substantial 40% off the original retail price of $65. If you missed the deal on Black Friday, this is another chance for you to pick up a highly rated and very accessible board game for a deal-worthy price. Wingspan Board Game for $38.81 Wingspan from Stonemeier Games is an incredibly good board game. So good in fact that we deemed it the best board game of 2019. Wingspan looks like a deceptively simple game; the endgame goal is to attract as many birds as you can to your wildlife preserve and help them proliferate. There are only four actions you can perform: draw a bird card, play a bird card, get food, and lay eggs. Sounds simple...
Valve has given a warning to consumers to only buy Steam Deck handhelds from Valve themselves or through other official retailers and websites. "Hello, and happy new year! A quick note that the only official ways to purchase Steam Deck are directly from Steam (in the US, CA, EU, and UK), or from Komodo (JP, KR, TW, and HK),” Valve explained on Twitter. “Steam Decks sold via any other websites or retailers are unofficial - please be careful.” While Valve is being well-intentioned here, Twitter users in the replies have rightfully pointed out that Steam Deck handhelds are not officially available to purchase from Valve in certain territories. Places like Australia and Latin America are notably absent from the official list. One user...
Months after its console and PC release, beat 'em up Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge is the latest game to head to mobile for Netflix subscribers. Yesterday, Netflix announced the game's arrival on mobile with a trailer. According to Netflix's in-app description, the mobile port still features controller support and online multiplayer gameplay. Inspired by arcade beat 'em ups of the '90s (and including quite a few improvements to their combat systems), TMNT: Shredder's Revenge sees the classic Turtles, along with a few newly playable characters, taking on new foes through a campaign mode and an arcade mode. IGN gave TMNT: Shredder's Revenge an 8 in our review, praising its "fun combat, a charming and nostalgic...
