I’ll cut to the chase: Street Fighter 6’s closed beta was the best fighting game beta I’ve ever played. And I’m not even talking about the quality of the game – even though that too is really good. I’m talking about everything from the presentation, to the stellar netcode, to the gorgeous battle hub, to the ease of finding matches, to the sheer number of options and modes accessible, most important among those being a training mode, which really should be standard at this point in fighting game betas. Street Fighter 6’s closed beta checked all of the boxes, then added new boxes, and checked those too.
Let’s talk about the actual game first. I’ve gotten to play Street Fighter 6 at a number of gaming events over the last few months, and...
Lady Dimitrescu will be playable in the upcoming Mercenaries mode in the Resident Evil Village expansion. Still, to get her into a playable state the developers at Capcom had to pull a few tricks, including shrinking her just a smidge.
In an interview with Polygon, Resident Evil Village Winters’ Expansion director Kento Kinoshita revealed that the team wanted to keep Lady Dimitrescu’s core attributes when turning her into a playable character, namely her height.
And while she will be taller than any other character in Mercenaries mode, they did shrink her from her canonical nine-foot-six-inch height.
“Lady Dimitrescu’s height brought up a lot of challenges during development, but in the end we were able to implement her with a...
Platinum Vice President Hideki Kamiya has given his stamp of approval for the Nintendo Switch. But even though he's a legendary game designer, Kamiya's reason for loving the machine is is quite simple: he likes to play games while on the go, or when lying around the house.
Speaking to VGC, Kamiya said he hopes Nintendo sticks with the home console/handheld hybrid approach. "Personally, this is a very lifestyle-oriented preference for myself, but right now I feel it’s really difficult for me to actually 'sit' still in front of the TV and play games," Kamiya said.
"For me, I lie down and play games in portable mode and I enjoy games that way, and that’s the biggest reason why I like the Nintendo Switch. Whenever the new hardware that...
I’ve known there are other monster-hunting games out there besides the quintessential Monster Hunter, but none have really grabbed my attention and hooked me quite the same. Perhaps until now. More needs to be seen before I can say for sure, but after playing more than 10 hours of Wild Hearts, I can say this just might be the one. So far, Wild Hearts looks like an exciting mash-up of challenging hunting, crafting, beautiful semi-open-world environments, and snappy building mechanics that makes it stand on its own four legs.
First, some housekeeping - generally, what everyone wants to know: Wild Hearts is set to be released on February 17, 2023 for the PC and next-gen consoles. Yes, crossplay is supported for its three-player co-op –...
Developers are continuing in their quest to make the original Doom playable on every object to ever exist, and it can now be played on Windows' Notepad app.
As reported by The Escapist, developer Sam Chiet has created a fully operable version of Doom in a completely unmodified version of text editor Notepad.
Chiet posted a clip of the game running on his Twitter (below) and his YouTube page, promising that he'll publicly release the Notepad version of the classic FPS soon. "It'll take some work to polish NotepadDoom into something releasable, but it'll almost certainly happen over the next couple days," he said in a follow-up tweet.
It joins the long list of bizarre ways to play Doom nearly 30 years after the game was first...
Atlus has announced that a Persona 5 Royal cooperative card game is being developed in partnership with Pandasaurus Games.
Century: Eastern Wonders and Foundations of Rome designer Emerson Matsuuchi is creating the game, and is targeting a Q4 2023 release date. While this could mean anywhere from October to December next year, a graphic on the announcement post explicitly states it will arrive on October 21.
"Players will take on the roles of their favourite Phantom Thieves and fight to change the world in this cooperative card-based strategy game," said Matsuuchi. Little else about the game was revealed, but it will likely be a standalone release instead of a collectible product given the company's roots in board game products.

Lara Craft Go developer Square Enix Montréal has been rebranded as Onoma following its acquisition by Embracer Group earlier this year.
As reported by GI.biz, a post on the developer's new website explained that "Onoma is Greek for name and names offer endless possibilities", symbolising that players "can be anyone, achieve anything, and go anywhere".
The post continued: "As game makers, we are inventors of new worlds, of new possibilities. Names are the beginning of stories - of our story as individuals and as a community. Stories are invitations to other worlds where the unknown, the impossible, and the magical become reality.
"At Onoma, we are creators, inventors, and storytellers, and the experiences and ideas that we bring to...
Your journey in Broken Roads, an isometric RPG set in the post-apocalyptic wastes of Western Australia, begins with a test. Akin to the Voight-Kampff of Blade Runner, it poses a series of hypothetical situations and asks how you’d respond. What would you do if you discovered that a man being taken for execution was probably innocent? How would you deal with scavengers looting from a place you found first? How would you treat a captured bandit who raided your home? Each of your answers is plotted on a literal moral compass, a persistent and permanent mechanic that will shape your character’s worldview across the next 25 or so hours.
That compass is split into four segments - humanist, utilitarian, nihilist, and Machiavellian - and your...
For the most well-known rally raid event in motorsport, there really haven’t been that many games based on the Dakar Rally over the last 40-odd years. There appear to be just five, actually – and one of those is an 8-bit, 1988 fever dream where your car has guns and you get from France to Africa by driving… under the sea avoiding giant starfish, lobsters, and many torpedoes. Perhaps adapting the Dakar into a game is as difficult as winning the thing in real life? This would certainly explain Dakar Desert Rally, where I’ve been zigzagging between enjoying its genuinely immersive moments of brilliance and cursing its bugs, uneven performance, odd design choices, and often unresponsive handling, which have effectively counteracted just...
Welcome to another wonderful week of jaw-dropping, wallet-smashing bargains. Along with the headliner deals above, I'm still tracking Fallout anniversary/SEGA Mega Mix sale treats from last week. Lastly, the Microsoft and PlayStation stores both have some impressive discounts on yesteryear greats. I've handpicked a bunch that I'd totally buy (if I didn't own them already).

Arkane Studios has officially confirmed that Deathloop takes place in the future of the universe first built in the Dishonored games.
This confirmation comes by the way of Deathloop director and Arkane Lyon studio director Dinga Bakaba, who appeared on The Official Xbox Podcast alongside Arkane Austin studio director Harvey Smith.
Xbox's Jeff Rubenstein asked Bakaba about the rumors and hints that Deathloop is connected to this larger universe. While Rubenstein said he didn't have to confirm anything, Bakaba went above and beyond and not only confirmed that this was true, but he also discussed the thought process behind making it so.
"Not everyone has seen the same thing," Bakaba said of Deathloop. "Not everyone has heard the same...
Between the popularity of the Edgerunners anime series, the improvements in the latest patches, and the recent milestone of having sold 20 million copies, there’s no doubting the fact that CD Projekt Red’s take on ‘roleplaying in the dark future’ is finally living up to much of its original promise – even if it took a bit longer than expected.
What we didn’t necessarily expect, however, was that CDPR would be so quick to announce their plans for another installment of the Cyberpunk series. Details are admittedly sparse – all we really know for certain is that plans for it exist, and that it’s being made by a brand new studio. But given that I’ve already dumped 200+ hours into 2077 and god knows how many more into the original tabletop...
Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable will officially be released on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch on January 19, 2023.
Atlus announced the news on Twitter, saying, "Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden release for modern platforms on January 19, 2023." The image features logos for Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and the Windows Store on PC, but it was previously revealed that these games will also arrive on Nintendo Switch and PS4. Persona 3 Portable will also be released on Steam and will join Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5.
These two re-releases were announced alongside the news that Persona 5 Royal would arrive on these same platforms, in addition to PS5, on October 21, 2022.

Those looking forward to jumping into Gotham Knights on October 21 should be aware that major spoilers for this new DC adventure have begun circling around the internet.
As reported by Eurogamer, it appears Gotham Knight's artbook has been arriving to certain customers early, and some of those customers have begun sharing some of the more spoilery details online.
In response to these leaks, Gotham Knights' executive producer Fleur Marty took to Twitter to share a few words on the unfortunate situation.
"I can't begin to understand why would anyone spoil a story (whether it's a game, a movie, a book, whatever) for others," Marty wrote.
We recently had a chance to preview Gotham Knights one last time before launch, and we said that...
Square Enix is urging Final Fantasy 14 players to be vigilant about their account security after revealing that it is currently under attack by hackers who are attempting to gain access to Square Enix accounts.
In a blog post, Square Enix revealed that it is "currently experiencing an attack by a third party that is attempting to gain access to the Square Enix Account Management System by using a combination of email address and passwords that appear to have been obtained from other online services of other companies."
To protect from any unwanted account breaches, Square Enix suggests changing any passwords you might share with Square Enix with other accounts.
Square Enix is telling players to reset their passwords or to use...
Valve doesn't want to acknowledge it, but one of the key selling points of the Steam Deck is its ability to support emulators like Yuzu. That capability was accidentally on full display earlier today when a new Steam Deck trailer featured Yuzu right next to Hades, Tunic, and Vampire Survivors.
The trailer was meant to confirm that the Steam Deck is now available to purchase without a reservation. However, it soon made waves among Steam Deck fans for other reasons. The trailer was quickly spotted by social media influencer Nibel, leading to plenty of discussions among fans on Twitter. A new trailer was soon posted with Portal 2 replacing Yuzu.
It was an obvious mistake by Valve, but it unwittingly showed what a major role that...
A new Crash Bandicoot game could be announced at The Game Awards if a recent promotional teaser turns out to be accurate.
Influencers have been receiving gifts promoting the upcoming Steam release of Crash Bandicoot 4 It's About Time. This gift is what looks like a pizza box with labels highlighting Crash 4's October 18 PC release date. But a small detail tucked away on the box seems to be teasing an additional announcement.
Also on the box is a little message teasing a new "Wumpa Pizza" available for $12.08. This price happens to be the same date as this year's Game Awards which will take place on December 8th. This has led to speculation that this is for a new Crash announcement.
Fans have been speculating a new Crash Bandicoot...

Street Fighter 6 went into beta today, giving some fans the opportunity to test out the game ahead of its launch. While it's in closed beta, luckily for the rest of the internet, the players with access have created some truly incredible (and terrifying) things with its impressively open-ended character creator.
Of course, plenty of players have begun testing the limits of this character creator by creating terrifying forms that should probably not be allowed to exist, like this man with green chest hair and massive calves:
As seen above, the character creator appears to have plenty of opportunities for hair customization, leading to this extremely buff man with pink and red hair:
...And this guy, who seemingly sacrificed hair and...
After ten years, Electronic Arts is replacing Origin PC with the EA App, a new desktop client for PC.
Today, EA announced the app's release in a new blog, calling it their "fastest and lightest PC client to date." The EA app, which had been in open beta prior to the announcement, is now out and will soon fully replace Origin.
"For over 10 years we’ve welcomed millions of players into our Origin platform, we’ve listened to your feedback and acknowledge the limitations of this platform in a quickly evolving entertainment landscape," EA's post reads.
"So we set out to build EA’s next-generation PC game platform — a faster, more reliable, and more streamlined gaming experience — the best possible place for you to experience EA’s...
Hello Games has announced that No Man’s Sky’s 4.0 update, called Waypoint, will be released today, and said it's likely the “biggest generational jump so far” for the game.
The 21st major update brings both design and balance overhauls alongside hundreds of quality-of-life improvements, as Hello Games has attempted to unify all of its previous content into a more cohesive gameplay experience.
Its inventory system is one example of this, as players, ships, and weapons now have a “greatly increased” level cap. Milestones have also been updated and a new information portal makes it easier for returning players to pick No Man’s Sky back up thanks to summary of their goals and progress.
New gameplay modes have also been added, with...
The upcoming Dead Space remake won’t be coming to PS4 despite a trailer that seemed to claim otherwise.
A PlayStation trailer for the upcoming survival horror seemed to suggest that Dead Space would be getting a PS4 release alongside its PS5 launch. But it looks as though that’s not actually the case.
“A PlayStation trailer listing that suggested EA Motive's upcoming Dead Space remake will launch for PS4 as well as PS5 is a mistake,” said Eurogamer.
The trailer debuted on PlayStation’s Latin America YouTube channel and wrongly stated that the Dead Space remake is coming to both PS4 and PS5. Of course, the news spread quickly among fans, with some taking to Reddit to discuss the implications… even suggesting that the game could be...
Valve has announced that the Steam Deck is now available to buy without a reservation.
Ever since the Steam Deck launched earlier this year, you’ve needed to reserve a place in a queue to buy one, but Valve has now removed the waiting list, allowing you to order the Steam Deck directly via its online store, with the handheld console shipped to you shortly after.
“Starting today, Steam Deck is available without a reservation,” they said in a tweet. “Order one now, and we’ll ship it to you now.”
“Supply chain issues kept us from producing Steam Decks fast enough to meet demand,” they explained. “But now, even though the rate of reservations keeps growing, we’ve been able to increase our manufacturing volume to meet demand.”
When it...

Valve has officially opened up preorders for its official Steam Deck docking station.
The steam page for the official docking station lists the accessory for $89 with an estimated delivery date of 1-2 weeks. The official Steam Deck docking station features three USB 3.1 ports, one HDMI 2.0 port, a DisplayPort 1.4, and a Gigabit Ethernet jack.
This is not the only docking station available for the Steam Deck, as third-party makers like JSAUX and iVoler released similar accessories for Valve's portable gaming PC at a retail price cheaper than what Valve is asking for.
The docking station was originally supposed to release back earlier this year. But in June, Valve delayed the release of the docking station to an undisclosed release...
Between server errors, broken account merges, and a strange SMS requirement that locked some players with prepaid phone plans out of the game, Overwatch 2's launch on Tuesday became fairly controversial. Now, Blizzard is apologizing and working to fix some of these issues.
In a post on Blizzard's forum, community manager Jodie apologized for the game's launch and detailed some of the ways the team is working to fix these issues.
"First, we want to apologize to our players. We expected the launch of Overwatch 2 to go smoothly," the post reads. "We hold ourselves to a higher standard and we are working hard to resolve the issues you are experiencing."
Overwatch 2 introduced a requirement for players to connect a phone number, which...
High on Life, the upcoming comedy-FPS from Rick & Morty co-creator Justin Roiland and his Squanch Games development studio, has revealed its voice cast, and it features Rick & Morty alums, stand-up comedians, sketch comedy legends, prominent video game voice actors, and many other funny and talented people.
Roiland plays your first talking gun, the pistol-like Kenny (who sounds quite a bit like Morty). Curb Your Enthusiasm's JB Smoove voices the shotgun-esque talking gun Gus. Comedian Betsy Sodaro plays Sweezy, the Halo-Needler-like gun you can see in our exclusive 12-minute gameplay video from earlier this week. Tim Robinson, from Netflix's I Think You Should Leave, plays Creature. The Sarah Silverman Program costar Laura Silverman...
PlatinumGames says that it is sorry about the impending shutdown of Babylon's Fall’s servers, but also notes that it will not impact any future live-service plans.
In an interview with VGC, PlatinumGames CEO Atsushi Inaba said, “The only thing we can comment on here in terms of the closure of Babylon’s Fall service itself, is that this unfortunate conclusion might have been something that had triggered some disappointment, perhaps maybe even anger, to our dedicated fans and players.”
He continued, “And any disappointment that we might have caused for our fan base is something we feel extremely sorry about, the fact that we led our dedicated fans to feel that way as a developer. Providing any sentiment other than enjoyment and fun in...
Brazil’s competition watchdog, the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) has approved the Microsoft and Activision Blizzard merger without restriction, citing PlayStation’s already dominant position within the video game industry and Nintendo’s ability to compete without relying on franchises such as Call of Duty.
In a long public filing, CADE touched on PlayStation’s portfolio of exclusives, saying, “Investment in exclusive content is, and always has been, very important for the competitive dynamics in the console segment. Exclusive content was, most likely, one of the main factors responsible for positioning the PlayStation as a leader in the world console market for more than two decades, a leadership that continues to...
