It's a bad sign when there were more Muppets at The Game Awards than Xbox world premieres. As someone who's been playing and covering Xbox for 20 years, I’m not sure I’ve ever been more baffled by the console-maker’s decision-making. I tweeted my frustration as soon as the industry's glitziest event of the year came to its awkward end, and if the hundreds of responses to that tweet told me anything, it's that this was no hot take. How could it be? Microsoft literally showed nothing for the year to come, despite promising us a huge 2023 at last summer's Xbox Showcase.
In June last year I foolishly declared the years-long exclusives drought over ahead of Microsoft’s fantastic Fall 2021. In hindsight, that period has been an exception...
To say the COVID-19 pandemic affected Hideo Kojima's writing of Death Stranding 2 would be an understatement.
The Kojima Productions founder officially unveiled the sequel at tonight's Game Awards, and after showing the first look, stayed on stage for a while to answer some questions from host Geoff Keighley.
“I had the story written before the pandemic, but after experiencing the pandemic, I rewrote the whole thing from scratch," he told Keighley after being asked how the pandemic affected the game. "I also didn’t want to predict any more future, so I rewrote it.”
It's true that Kojima has earned a somewhat infamous reputation for predicting the future with his games; Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was far ahead of its time...
It’s rare that a pistol gets to be the star of the show in a video game, but that’s exactly what happened in Dead Space. The 2008 survival horror classic made the Plasma Cutter, a handgun-like tool that shoots vertical or horizontal projectiles, the most essential tool for dismembering your necromorph enemies. When it came to remaking Dead Space, developer EA Motive knew that it had to do right by this iconic weapon. And so it’s exactly as you remember.
“Who wants to change the Plasma Cutter? It's perfect as it is,” says Roman Campos-Oriola, creative director on Dead Space at EA Motive. “I'm joking a bit, but it's exactly the way we approached that weapon during the development.
“Anybody [who] played any Dead Space before remembers...
I have an affinity for the absurd, silly, and downright stupid (look no further than Goat Simulator 3 review as evidence), so when I heard about a game where you’re being stalked by the demonic equivalent of Thomas the Tank Engine, I was suitably excited. But while Choo-Choo Charles’ premise brings me no end of joy, the janky and barebones adventure itself is way more dull than I thought possible. Unfortunately, this comedy game disguised as a horror game manages to be devoid of humor and terror in equal measure, and even though the runtime is only about 90 minutes, I found myself looking for a way off this crazy train much sooner.
Choo-Choo Charles may present itself as nightmare fuel on the outside, but this whole game is actually...
Last night, we got our first proper gameplay trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor at The Game Awards, along with a March 17, 2023 release date. With that came a proper long look at Jedi hero Cal Kestis, a young man who’s clearly undergone some pretty massive changes since the ending of Fallen Order.
For one, he’s got a new look - Cal’s ditched the poncho from Fallen Order and now has a more adventuresome, almost Han Solo look to him. He’s grown some facial hair, and his lightsabers are evolving as well as he grows more powerful and resourceful.
But the changes are far from just skin-deep. IGN spoke to Cal’s actor Cameron Monaghan ahead of the trailer release about how his character has been impacted in the five year time gap between...
Valorant developer Riot Games is suing NetEase over its game, Hyper Front.
According to Polygon, a filing at a UK court claims that Hyper Front is a “copy of substantial parts of Valorant”. Riot claims there are a number of similarities, including characters, maps, weapons, weapon skins, weapons stats, and charms.
“All of our creative choices are mirrored in NetEase’s game,” said Riot Games’ lawyer, Dan Nabel. “We don’t think that changing the color of a character ability or slightly modifying the visual appearance changes the fact that it’s copyright infringement. It’s like that old saying, ‘You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.’”
Valorant is a free-to-play first-person shooter that pits two teams of five against...
No other racing game released this year looks quite like Need for Speed Unbound, and that can be a difficult thing to achieve in such an established genre so steeped in convention. Criterion has gone all-in with wild, animated visual flair that often appears as though it’s been lifted from the pages of a comic book, even as the actual driving and split day/night structure of its races are immediately familiar to those of us who appreciated 2019’s Need for Speed Heat. The result is a uniquely styled racer that regularly looks quite fabulous in motion, though its grating story mode goes over like a banana in the tailpipe and the online mode simply feels stripped down and unfinished.
While Heat hardly revolutionised arcade racing, it was...

If your heart containers overflow for somebody, never assume that it's simply understood. What’s obvious info on your HUD may not be clearly painted on someone else’s. The solution: lock-on to the object of your affection and fire something lovely their way. Let there be zero doubts.
Collected below are gaming (and gaming adjacent) gifts that unmistakably deliver a short, sharp area-of-effect burst of adoration. Most of these are simple, perfectly platonic options. Others could emit a subtle hint of hoping to level up your relations to something more... cooperative multiplayer.
I’ll leave you to figure out which item is needed for your main objective. Better yet, I’ve also provided a fantastic, safe way to pay for it all…

We’re still waiting for Tekken 8, but fighting game fans got a little something to tide them over until the next King of Iron Fist Tournament at this year’s Game Awards: a brand-new trailer, complete with a look at the game’s story mode, a bunch of returning favorites (and one we haven’t seen in the Tekken canon since the original PlayStation), a glimpse of Tekken 8’s Heat system, which encourages aggressive play, more on what might be the final showdown between protagonist/anti-hero Jin Kazama and Father-of-the-Year nominee Kazuya Mishima, and a glimpse at the new tech powering all of it.
It's quite a bit to take in. Luckily, IGN got to sit down with Tekken 8 executive producer Katsuhiro Harada to break everything down.

During his acceptance speech for Game of the Year, Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki promised more Elden Ring content could be on the way.
FromSoftware's massive RPG, Elden Ring, won Game of the Year at this year's Game Awards. Director Miyazaki accepted the award on stage and promised, "As for Elden Ring, we have several more things we want to do."
Elden Ring was released earlier this year, and FromSoftware has already released a new content expansion called Colosseum, where players can battle each other in PvP combat. However, many fans are expecting some form of story DLC given every FromSoftware SouldBorne game received some kind of narrative expansion.
This includes the Dark Souls trilogy, as well as Bloodborne.

Cyberpunk 2077's major 2023 expansion, Phantom Liberty, will see Idris Elba join the cast. Elba's role in the upcoming DLC was revealed in a new trailer showcased during The Game Awards this evening.
Developer CD Projekt Red has since confirmed Elba will be playing a character called Solomon Reed, a veteran New United States of America agent who the studio has teased is "apparently the only person players can trust to help them fulfill an impossible mission of espionage and survival."
CD Projekt Red recently confirmed Phantom Liberty will be paid DLC when it's released in 2023, however the studio has not confirmed a price or specific release date for the update.
Little else is known about Phantom Liberty at this stage, though it is...
Genshin Impact has won the Player's Voice award at The Game Awards 2022, following an intense battle against Elden Ring and Sonic Frontiers.
Unlike other awards bestowed at The Game Awards, which are primarily determined by members of the press and other influential individuals in the industry, the Player's Voice category is 100% fan-voted. Earlier this week, ahead o the show, the results projected that Genshin Impact would edge out both Sonic Frontiers and Elden Ring. Other nominees for the Player's Voice category include God of War: Ragnarok and Stray.
Although Elden Ring, in particular, did not get selected, FromSoftware's latest project did go home with a few awards, including Best Art Direction and Best Game Direction. For more...
After a lengthy hiatus and many rumors, Armored Core is back. FromSoftware announced Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon during today's Game Awards presentation with a brief trailer today, confirming that it will be out sometime in 2023.
The CG trailer shows just what you expect: giant robots wheeling around and fighting one another. Other notable scenes include a burning planet and a mech with a backpack looking out over the horizon.
Little else is known about the sequel save that its release window. Fans will no doubt speculate that FromSoftware will give this one a Soulsborne edge — following on from the success of Elden Ring and other releases — but that's far from certain.
After all, Armored Core is one of FromSoftware's oldest...
The first gameplay for Soulsike reboot The Lords of the Fallen was revealed during The Game Awards 2022.
The Unreal Engine 5 gameplay shows the tough as nails dark fantasy RPG in action in a brand new trailer, providing a first glimpse at some familiar but still fresh looking melee combat.
The Lords of the Fallen was revealed earlier this year as a reboot to the similarly titled Lords of the Fallen, a Soulslike from 2016 that failed to take off as a franchise. Following years of troubled development, the sequel was finally rebranded as the reboot and revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live earlier this year.
The lengthy reveal trailer showed off the game's dark setting, taking place 1,000 year after the first game and in a world...

The first gameplay footage of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has been shown at The Game Awards 2022. The game is set to come out on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC sometime in 2023.
The gameplay showed the Defenders of Mankind taking on the horrors that dwell in the darkness. Plenty of skeletons, demons, and other monsters were shown, along with a lot of third-person shooting and melee combat.
Space Marine 2 is the long-awaited sequel to Relic Entertainment's third-person shooter, released back in 2011. This second game, in development at Saber Interactive, will once again follow the journey of Ultramarine Captain Titus, now taller and stronger thanks to his Primaris upgrade.
The reveal CGI trailer showed him and his squad carving...
At The Game Awards, Bandai Namco has announced that it will publish Blue Protocol when it is released outside of Japan in 2023.
Blue Protocol is Bandai Namco’s anime-inspired MMORPG where players can create their own custom character and choose between five classes. The developers are calling Blue Protocol an anime come to life.
The MMO was co-developed by Bandai Namco Online and Bandai Namco Studios and is set in the world of Regnas, which is facing the brink of destruction. Players will harness a power called Flux to defeat foes and team up with allies to face the oncoming threats.
The five classes include Blade Warden, Twin Striker, Keen Strider, Spell Weaver, and Foe Breaker.
Amazon Games tells IGN that Blue Protocol began...
Gearbox Publishing and developer Gunfire Games have announced that looter shooter Remnant 2 will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC in 2023.
Revealed with a 30 second trailer (and an extended version available below) at The Game Awards 2022, the three-person cooperative shooter will make a return with even more deadly worlds, unique loot, and ghastly beasts.
"Remnant 2 plunges players deeper into a devastated world requiring a mix of methodical and frenetic ranged and melee combat against cunning enemies and punishing boss battles," the game's synopsis reads. Blizzard has announced that Diablo 4 will launch on June 6, 2023, with a public beta coming beforehand. Players who preorder Diablo 4 will gain open beta early access.
Revealed at The Game Awards 2022, the 2023 release date was finally narrowed down as Blizzard confirmed the June date for its first take on an open world version of the action-RPG series.
The release date announcement makes sense given that some players have already had the chance to play Diablo 4. Blizzard launched a closed beta for hardcore fans of the previous games to trial Diablo 4's end-game, though some footage had already leaked.
Diablo 4 was announced more than three years ago at BlizzCon 2019 and has slowly but surely been teased by Blizzard ever since. The...
Jun Kazama is back. Jin Kazama's mother, who seemingly died way back in Tekken 2, will return in Tekken 8 as a playable character, tonight's Game Awards trailer revealed.
The new trailer includes a closer look at Tekken 8's gameplay than the original teaser trailer, which served as a tech demo of sorts. In addition to showing off some of the combat, the trailer reveals the new iterations of King, Paul, Lars, Marshall Law, and Jack-8.
It's Jun though who will garner the most scrutiny though, as her return finally confirms multiple fan theories that she was in fact alive all along. The trailer ends with Tekken's 8 tagline: "Fist Meets Fate."
Tekken 8 was first revealed earlier this year, and was subsequently confirmed to be an...
After more than two years of being available in early access, Baldur's Gate 3 finally has a release month: August 2023.
Revealed at The Game Awards 2022, the full version of Baldur's Gate 3 will be released in the summer.
Developed by beloved RPG studio Larian, Baldur's Gate 3 was first revealed back in 2019 with a grotesque trailer that depicted the horror of the story's main antagonists: the mind flayers. Much like Larian's previous Divinity: Original Sin games, Baldur's Gate 3 was initially released via Steam Early Access in October 2020.
While this version only covers the first segment of the story, it has steadily grown in features over the years, including the addition of new classes like the barbarian and bard, as well as...

We just got a brand new trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor at The Game Awards that has confirmed its previously leaked March release, narrowing it down to March 17, 2023.
The trailer focuses on the returning hero Cal Kestis, who in the five year interim between Fallen Order and Survivor has become a stronger, more powerful Jedi Knight. He shows off multiple new Force and lightsaber abilities, including appearing to dual wield lightsabers as well as assembling a lightsaber that looks more like a claymore. At one point he seems to partner with multiple mounts that allow him to travel across both ground and air quickly.
Cal is also sporting a new look and has ditched his tunic, and he's not the only one. His former crew member Cere...
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League got a new trailer at The Game Awards, which paid tribute to the late Kevin Conroy. We also got a release date for the game, which is coming on May 26, 2023.
The trailer opened with a silhouette of Batman, before showing the Suicide Squad torturing the Flash. Then, Batman arrives and starts doing his thing in the shadows, which definitely frightens the Suicide Squad. Batman ultimately reveals himself and turns out the lights.
The trailer ended with a tribute to Conroy, with a message that said "Thank You Kevin". After the trailer, host Geoff Keighley confirmed that Conroy is the voice of Batman in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Conroy voiced the Caped Crusader in Rocksteady's Arkham...
Announced tonight during The Game Awards, The Last of Us Part 1 officially has a PC release date: March 3, 2023.
This remake of The Last of Us was originally slated to arrive on PC "very soon" after its September launch on PlayStation 5, but we hadn't heard a firm date since then. A trailer shown during the award show gives a fresh look at familiar gameplay now captured on PC.
In our review of The Last of Us Part 1, IGN's own Luke Reilly called it "a gorgeous and well-honed remake of one of the biggest boppers in the PlayStation pantheon, The Last of Us Part I is the best way to play – or replay – Naughty Dog’s esteemed survival classic."
This story is developing...

Ken Levine, the creator of BioShock, has finally revealed his next game titled Judas.
At the Game Awards, a trailer for the upcoming title was revealed. While details are still under wraps, the trailer showcases what looks to be a narrative-driven, single-player, first-person shooter. The game is being developed by Ghost Story Games, a Take-Two Interactive subsidiary, and this will serve as the studio's first title.
“We founded Ghost Story Games to build upon the legacy of System Shock 2, BioShock, and BioShock Infinite,” said Levine notes in a recent press release. “With Judas, we’ve created an entirely new world and set of characters while exploring different approaches to single-player, narrative first-person shooters.”
