Elden Ring developer FromSoftware has unveiled a new Bloodborne-like enemy that is set to appear in next month’s Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, and fans are already talking about how it will terrorize fellow Tarnished. The studio pulled back the curtain on its latest nightmare on X/Twitter today. An image of the currently unnamed creature reveals a cloaked, cane-wielding being with a glowing head. The Bloodborne comparisons come from its tentacle-like face, giving the enemy an almost Lovecraftian flair. “The abandoned and tragic who forage beneath the umbra pray for the embrace of a new master,” FromSoftware’s post says. Fans were quick to compare the creature to Bloodborne enemies like Winter Lanterns and Garden of Eyes, which...
In 2022, fans of the 1990s adventure series Monkey Island finally got another game with Return to Monkey Island, which notably marked creator Ron Gilbert's first time directing a Monkey Island project in 30 years. Now, it looks like Gilbert has another project up his sleeve that's due out just two (or maybe three) years later. As pointed out by Time Extension, Gilbert has been sharing progress on an untitled RPG that's described as "classic Zelda meets Diablo meets Thimbleweed Park," according to studio Terrible Toybox's website. Screenshots of the game shared on Gilbert's Mastodon account show off a top-down pixel art style reminiscent of classic Zelda titles, flaunting a few quaint houses in a woodsy area as well as some classic...
Bethesda has unveiled its first Fallout 4 patch since the big next-gen update released last month, including some new graphics and performance option settings and a few other fixes. The studio had said the update was coming last week, and today rolled it out across Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4/5, and PC. The most important parts are those aforementioned graphics and fidelity options, with the Frame Rate Target now allowing you to choose between 30, 40, and 60 (default). As Bethesda notes, your display must be able to support 120hz if you choose 40. You can also choose between Visuals and Performance while trying to maintain framerate, with Performance being recommended for 60 FPS. The update also includes a short list...
A dedicated Baldur's Gate 3 fan has recreated the Mysterious Artefact in real life, and it doubles as an Xbox controller to play the game with. Twitch streamer Rudeism shared a video on X/Twitter, below, of the artefact's creation and use, showing off its complete functionality as a working Xbox controller that can fully control Baldur's Gate 3 (or Forza Motorsport, Starfield, or any other Xbox game). Each side of the Mysterious Artefact is a separate Xbox button like A, B, Right Trigger, and so on, while the thumbsticks are simulated using motion controls from inside the controller, meaning Rudeism has to turn the device itself to move their character around. The project took nearly five months to complete, as Rudeism had to design...
Star Citizen just received its latest update, Alpha 3.23: Adventure Beckons, which adds the space sim's first native animals, new hoverbikes, FPS upgrades, and more. Alongside the game’s first native wildlife are massive terrestrial mission hubs, FPS and UI enhancements from single-player story spin-off Squadron 42, as well as quality-of-life improvements and new features, such as what’s called Star Map 1.0, which adds a full 3D view of the system, and new cloud and water tech. Elsewhere, there are new Master Modes for more intense space fight combat. Developer Cloud Imperium Games said Alpha 3.23: Adventure Beckons (yes, Star Citizen is still in alpha) is Star Citizen’s largest patch to date, adding the first native wildlife for the...
The developer of Marvel Rivals has apologized for having a clause in its content creator contract that blocked streamers from criticizing the game. Marvel Rivals, a Marvel-themed take on team-based hero shooter Overwatch, was recently made available to some content creators as part of a closed alpha test. Amid positive feedback, it emerged that the contract that creators had to sign to gain access to the game included a number of clauses that prevented any disparaging comments. As streamer and retired professional Overwatch player Brandon Larned, aka Seagull, revealed on X / Twitter, the non-disparagement clause in the contract prevented creators from posting negative reviews, or even comparing it to competitors, such as Blizzard’s...
Ever since Sony’s PC and PlayStation 5 co-op shooter Helldivers 2 came out earlier this year, fans have suggested it would be perfect for a Star Wars crossover. Now, one mod team has gone ahead and built just that. Prolific mod content creator Toasted tasked his mod team with creating a Star Wars Clone Wars mod pack for Helldivers 2, and has published the results in video form with the help of @SWBFUpdates, @StayBombastic, and @OzzyOVLD. The mod pack, built by modders Kboy and @irastris, swaps out Hellidvers for playable Clone Troopers from the 501st Legion, including Captain Rex, Commander Cody, and Sergeant Hunter, with Automaton enemies redesigned as Separatist Droids. There are B1-series battle droids, B2-series super battle...
Square Enix has announced a significant company reboot amid tumbling profits. Reporting its financial performance for the financial year ending March 31, 2024, sales in the Digital Entertainment segment, which includes video games, rose by 2.6% but profit fell by 15.8%. This despite the sale of Final Fantasy 16, Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, Foamstars, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Specifically on HD games, the subcategory Square Enix uses to encompass all the above games, the company saw a significant operating loss of ¥8.1 billion (approximately $51.9 million). Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth both launched as PlayStation 5 exclusives, and while Square Enix has announced a sales figure for Final Fantasy 16, it has yet to...
Welcome to yet another week of paying a little for a lot. The Microsoft and PlayStation stores are starting to warm up with a bunch of decent sales events—the pick of which are represented below. I'm also keeping an eye on Amazon for any sign of extraordinarily early EOFY deals as well. Not much doing there. But I'll be ready to holler if and when they appear. In retro news, I'm celebrating the 32nd birthday of Street Fighter II: Champion Edition, a game whose industry impact cannot be overstated. Obviously, 1991's World Warrior was the opening jab, but the Champion Edition revision was a $2.3 billion knockout cross that put Capcom in the top three highest grossing arcade games of all time list. Nineties gaming gromets like myself...

Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt has taken to X/Twitter to seemingly share a first look at the cape design that was inspired by the review bombing on Steam following the PSN account linking fiasco. The image, which you can see below, is only a small tease of what's to come as we only get a look at the bottom right of the cape. However, that hasn't stopped fans from getting very excited. @MadeByKoobi was one of the many who can't wait for this cape, and they shared the always-wonderful Jurassic Park meme of Dr. Ian Malcolm saying, 'You did it. You crazy son of a bitch, you did it." Countless others praised the team for actually making this a reality, and this first look follows many designs created by fans themselves after Sony...

Last December, Ubisoft announced it was delisting its MMO racing game The Crew from all digital storefronts but shutting down the servers on March 31, 2024. Weeks after the servers were slated to shut down, Ubisoft began notifying players who owned a copy of The Crew that it was removing it from their Ubisoft accounts. Though Ubisoft is not the first company to shut down servers for an online-only game, the recent closure of The Crew’s online servers has inspired one individual to push for legal and government intervention to address the ever-growing industry trend. It's a trend that has sparked even debate in the industry after Microsoft announced the closure of Arkane Studios, the developer behind Redfall. This decision has led to...

After Helldivers 2 was removed from Steam for 177 countries following the recent PlayStation Network account-linking debacle, fans have been eagerly awaiting updates, especially after Sony reversed course on the account-linking decision. A couple updates did come in today — but not ones that fans were hoping for. Firstly, Helldivers 2 added the Baltics to its restricted countries, as recorded on its SteamDB page. But, more significantly, Ghost of Tsushima has also been restricted in countries where PSN is not available, leading to the same purchase restrictions as Helldivers 2. Both games are now restricted in Etstonia, Lithuania, and Latvia in addition to the 177 other games on the list. The development comes just days after Ghost...
This review covers the multiplayer modes of Homeworld 3. For thoughts on the multiplayer skirmish and War Games co-op mode, see the Homeworld 3 Single-Player Campaign review. When coming up with a real-time strategy game's multiplayer modes, a developer generally has two options: let us play with all of the toys in an all-out brawl until the other side is dead, with maybe a few minor twists thrown in, or try something new, different, and a little risky. In Homeworld 3, Blackbird Interactive has had it both ways, delivering both the bog-standard multiplayer skirmish match between Motherships and an inventive new co-op mode that, if the content continues to flow, has the potential to take on a life of its own. There are few surprises...
AFK Journey is a free-to-play fantasy RPG that released in March for PC and mobile, and it quickly became one of the top-rated games on iOS and Android. It gives you command of a party of heroes with a diverse array of classes and abilities, and with nearly 50 heroes currently available, your options are always growing and evolving. Your party consists of five members, but AFK Journey has several systems that allow you to easily and conveniently build your team how you want. For example, let’s say you’ve built your party to level 20 but get a new character you want to try out. When you swap them into your party, they immediately jump to level 20. Basically, it’s as if the level belongs to the slot in your party rather than a specific...
This review covers the single-player campaign of Homeworld 3. For thoughts on the multiplayer skirmish and War Games co-op mode, see the Homeworld 3 Multiplayer review. Considering Homeworld 2 came out more than 20 years ago (and was remastered in 2015) it’s a welcome surprise how little had to change – and how little complexity had to be sacrificed – to bring this classic, large-scale space strategy gameplay up to modern standards and deliver a visually spectacular and mechanically varied campaign. Building and controlling an armada of strike craft, frigates, and capital ships in full 3D space is certainly a little tricker to wrap your head around than most RTS games, but thanks to the ability to pause and give orders at any time you...
Long-time PUBG players, you’re getting a gift this month. The original Erangel map is returning, and changes to the gunplay, map layout, and visuals are designed to give you a nostalgic blast from the past while still delivering the evolved gameplay you’ve come to expect. For those who don’t know, PUBG first launched in Steam’s Early Access in March 2017. It became one of the most popular games of all time, shattering Steam’s record with 3.2 million concurrent players. Erangel was the game’s first battleground and is still part of the rotation, but it’s seen countless updates and changes over the years as PUBG has grown. This new update will take Erangel back to its roots. The first thing you’ll notice is that the UI has been...
Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead has set the game’s community yet another challenge: kill 2 billion Automatons to unlock a new Stratagem. The explosive PC and PlayStation 5 co-op shooter’s latest Major Order gives players five days to “decommission the targeted number of Automatons”. If the community hits the robot kill count within the set timeframe, the Anti-Tank Mines Stratagem will unlock. Killing two billion bots in five days sounds like an insurmountable task, but the Helldivers 2 community has form when it comes to mobilizing in response to tough Major Orders. In April, it took Helldivers 2 players less than 24 hours to kill two billion Terminids, but Arrowhead later confirmed the kill count was bugged. This new Major Order...
The first major patch for hit city builder Manor Lords, version 0.7.960, has been revealed by developer Slavic Magic and released for public testing. While this means the patch isn't officially out yet, those looking to enjoy its wealth of bug fixes and other improvements can now do so at the risk of some elements, like balance changes, being a tad off. Players happy to wait can do so knowing the full patch shouldn't be too far away. Revealed in a Steam post, Slavic Magic made these potential imperfections clear and recommended players back up their save files before switching to the test version. "The new strings are not localized yet and stability hasn't yet been thoroughly tested," it added. "Some balancing changes are still...
The first human Neuralink implant recipient is playing Slay the Spire, Old School RuneScape, and a range of other popular games by using the implant to translate his neural signals. Elon Musk’s neurotechnology company also revealed in a new update that a number of the implant’s electrode-bearing threads had retracted from the patient’s brain, leading to a temporary drop off in the performance of the brain-computer interface (BCI). Back in January, Neuralink co-founder Elon Musk took to X to announce the company had implanted its first ‘N1’ brain chip in the head of a human patient as part of its Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface (PRIME) study. The patient was later revealed to be 29-year-old American...
Lords of the Fallen and Sniper: Ghost Warrior publisher CI games has laid off 30 more members of staff less than four months after it cut 10% of its workforce. Speaking to GI.biz, CI Games said this would be the "final targeted round of redundancies" on its way to reaching "maximum efficiency in delivery strategic priorities going forward." Employees were notified of these additional cuts today, May 10, 2024, and will be "supported throughout the process over the coming weeks." Lords of the Fallen developer Hexworks is unaffected by this round of layoffs, CI Games said. It recently turned its attention to future installments in the franchise after releasing the final update for 2023's Lords of the Fallen. These latest layoffs come...

Steam users are leaving positive reviews for Hi-Fi Rush following Microsoft’s shock decision to close its developer, Tango Gameworks. Microsoft announced the closure of Tango Gameworks as well as Redfall developer Arkane Austin this week as part of devastating cuts to Bethesda owner ZeniMax. Tango Gameworks' critically acclaimed rhythm action game Hi-Fi Rush was deemed a success upon its launch. It shadow-dropped straight into Game Pass on Xbox and PC, and was sold outside the subscription service priced $30. IGN’s Hi-Fi Rush review returned a 9/10. We said: “Hi-Fi Rush marches to the beat of its own drum with stunning animation, loveable characters, and stylish rhythmic action that are anything but one-note.” Last year, amid...
Upcoming 2D roguelite The Rogue Prince of Persia has been delayed from its May 14, 2024 release date to avoid competition with Hades 2, which was released into Steam Early Access on May 6. Developer Evil Empire announced the delay on X/Twitter but assured it wouldn't push the game too far. Though it won't reveal an exact release date until May 13, Evil Empire said it would still be in May 2024. "Seeing as everyone and their mum is playing [Hades 2] (including out entire team and their mums), we have decided to let people have their fun with it before we release The Rogue Prince of Persia," the developer said. "While we have every confidence in The Rogue Prince of Persia, it's not every day that a game in the same genre as you...

Microsoft’s decision to release some of its Xbox games on rival console the PlayStation 5 appears to be paying off, with Rare’s pirate adventure Sea of Thieves topping Sony's sales chart. In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Sony revealed that Sea of Thieves was April’s most-downloaded PS5 game from the PlayStation Store in the EU, ahead of the likes of GTA 5 and Helldivers 2, and the third most-downloaded game in the U.S. Given Sony’s download chart does not include free-to-play games such as Fortnite, we can say Sea of Thieves was the best-selling PS5 game on the PlayStation Store in April, and right up there in the U.S. There’s more good news for Microsoft’s controversial multi-platform push. Obsidian’s Grounded also features highly...
