Based on the first couple of days with it, Helldivers 2 strikes me as hilarious, smartly designed, and intense whether I’m playing solo, with a squad of other random Helldivers, or serving up a nice hot cup of Liber-tea across the galaxy with buddies. I still need to see more of its varied missions, unlock a wider selection of its huge catalog of weapons, emotes, armor, and abilities, and see how Managed Democracy’s campaign against alien bugs and robots plays out during the long haul, so I’m not ready to give a final review just yet. But for right now, I’m enjoying traveling to exciting new places, meeting exotic life forms, and killing them for the glory of Super Earth. God, what a sentence.
After a gut-busting opening piece of...

For me the disappointment of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League isn’t just about its quality. It's about what it’s not as much as what it is. There’s very little of what made developer Rocksteady’s games so great in the past – near-unparalleled superhero power trips that sit alongside Insomniac’s critically acclaimed Spider-Man series. It’s also the latest in a frustratingly long line of beloved single-player-championing studios delving into unwelcoming loot-infested live-service waters. It’s been a perilous leap for many to make, with success limited to very few not called Bungie, and I hope we’re now at the end of this detrimental trend that’s plagued so many.
In recent years, BioWare abandoned the comfort of its trademark deep...

“It’s a hefty one, so we’ll be sharing the full patch notes on the official website - make sure to keep an eye out!” Larian continued.
Baldur’s Gate 3 launched in August last year and became an instant smash hit, soaring to huge heights on Steam before launching on PlayStation 5 and, in December, Xbox Series X and S. Larian has continued to update the game with big patches over the last half...
VR fans hoping for Ubisoft to invest more in the space will be disappointed to hear that the company is not planning to increase investment in VR games following disappointing sales of its most recent VR endeavor Assasin's Creed Nexus VR.
During a financial Q&A to discuss Ubisoft's third-quarter sales for the 2024 fiscal year, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot responded to a question from a caller who asked what the company plans for VR development due to the recent hardware releases, most notably Apple Vision Pro. Guillemot revealed that Ubisoft does not want to invest too much in the VR market due to Nexus VR's sales.
"We have been a bit disappointed by what we were able to achieve on VR with Assassin's Creed," Guillemot explained during...
The developers of the critically acclaimed 2D roguelike Dead Cells have signaled their intention to move on from the game following the release of its final major update later this year.
Original developer Motion Twin issued a statement to the Dead Cells Steam page alerting players to update 35, appropriately titled The End is Near, on PC and consoles and update 34, called Clean Cut, for the mobile version.
“Update 35 for Dead Cells marks the end of our creative journey on the game,” Motion Twin said. “After an incredible five-year collaboration in bringing additional content to Dead Cells' live-ops, Evil Empire will be pursuing new adventures and we can't wait to see what they come up with next.
“This comes after much reflection...

Helldivers 2 has become Sony’s biggest ever game launch on Steam, despite a ‘mixed’ reception from players.
Arrowhead Game Studios’ cooperative action game is published by Sony Interactive Entertainment across PS5 and PC via Steam. While Sony does not publish player numbers for PlayStation games, Valve does for Steam games. Yesterday, February 8, Helldivers 2 launched big on Steam with a peak concurrent player count of 81,840. That puts it ahead of Sony Santa Monica’s God of War, which enjoyed a peak concurrent player count of 73,529 when it launched on PC two years ago, according to SteamDB.
Helldivers 2’s PC success comes despite it launching day-and-date alongside the PS5 version, which is an unusual but not unprecedented...
A Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League player has unearthed a hidden message that looks like a strong hunt at the return of a crucial character.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League spoilers follow.
In Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Harley Quinn kills a mind-controlled Batman in what has proven to be one of the most controversial story moments in Rocksteady’s looter shooter. This is the Batman from Rocksteady’s much-loved Arkhamverse, and so the cutscene sparked a vociferous debate about the character’s demise.
That, many players thought, was that. But could Batman return? A new video from Batman Arkham Videos suggests Batman is set for a return. As detailed in the video, Suicide Squad players can find 12 calendars...
Sega has issued a financial warning after what it called “sluggish” and “weak” sales during the crucial holiday 2023 period.
Reporting its financial performance for the nine month period ending December 2023, Sega said it had revised its sales and profit forecast down “mainly due to weak sales” of new games released during the third quarter of the financial year.
“In the Consumer area, although we released some new titles in Q3, including Sonic Superstars, Endless Dungeon, and Total War: Pharaoh, sales went sluggish during the holiday sales season,” Sega said.
The company also recorded losses associated with an inventory write-down “in response to these sales conditions”. “As a result of these factors, etc., both sales and ordinary...

The next game from Ori and the Blind Forest developer Moon Studios, entitled No Rest for the Wicked, was expected to debut in early access in the first quarter of this year. But per publisher Take-Two Interactive, it looks like it's been delayed.
Today's earnings report from Take-Two Interactive lists No Rest for the Wicked's release date as "Q1 Fiscal 2025," which in financial speak is April, May, and June of 2024. Meaning the game has been delayed a few months.
We spoke with Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick today ahead of the earnings release, where he confirmed the delay. "It did get pushed a quarter, and as always, we will move something if we feel like we just want to give it a little more polish so it can be the best bet it can be...
Blizzard Entertainment is making some major changes to Overwatch 2 with Season 9: Champions, such as revamping Ranks, buffing all heroes, and more when it launches February 13.
These changes begin with the core gameplay, as Blizzard said it has heard community feedback and is making changes as a result. Weapon accuracy has been improved across the board, and every hero in the game will see a health increase to accommodate for the extra bullets taken.
"One of our main goals with these adjustments is to make firing your weapons and abilities feel more consistent without impacting the time to eliminate a target, without removing the overall feel of gameplay we all know and love," Blizzard said in a supporting blog post. Heroes who...

Ubisoft has reported its financials for the third quarter of its current fiscal year, and in doing so outlined what we can expect from this year and the early part of 2025.
In the short term, Q4 24 (January to March 2024) includes the imminent launch of the much-delayed Skull and Bones, as well as free-to-play Call of Duty-style shooter XDefiant.
Then, moving into the next financial year, Ubisoft committed to launching the promising Star Wars Outlaws in 2024. That means it will come out at some point from the beginning of April to the end of December 2024.
Assassin’s Creed Codename Red, meanwhile, is down for release during the 2025 financial year, which ends March 2025. It seems likely Ubisoft is targeting an October or November...

Helldivers 2 has enjoyed an impressive start on Steam, but the launch is under threat of being overshadowed by matchmaking problems and crashes.
Arrowhead Game Studios’ cooperative action game is published by Sony Interactive Entertainment across PS5 and PC via Steam. Helldivers 2 is currently the 18th most-played game on Steam with 64,183 concurrent players, a number that will no doubt grow over the course of the day, week, and into its first weekend. Helldivers 2 is also the third top-selling game by revenue on Steam, ahead of smash hits such as Palworld and Call of Duty.
But the reception to Helldivers 2 on Steam is currently classed as ‘mixed’, with some users pointing out performance problems that are causing issues on PC.

Subnautica 2 is a multiplayer-focused live-service game, publisher Krafton has revealed.
Writing in its latest financial report, Krafton described Subnautica 2 as a “multiplayer sequel to the original IP pursuing fandom snowballing”, which is a garbled way of describing the game.
Krafton said Subnautica 2 lets players “explore an oceanic world in stunning stylized graphics powered by Unreal Engine 5”, with “single or one to four player co-op to uncover the mysteries on an entirely new alien planet”, alongside a “game-as-a-service model with enhanced replayability.”
Subnautica is a hugely successful indie game that first emerged in 2018, then saw a follow-up, dubbed Below Zero, in 2021. IGN’s Subnautica review returned a 9/10. We...
A group of eBay sellers is accusing the company of union busting, saying it took action against their eBay accounts after they expressed support for the TCGPlayer union (TCGunion).
The thirteen individuals and companies have published a letter they sent last week to eBay co-CEOs Robert Bigler and Jamie Iannone, accusing the company of abuse of monopoly power over sellers, abuse of monopsony power over workers, and anticompetitive conduct. The first half of the letter outlines a number of concerns about a growing monopoly the sellers believe eBay holds over the online card buying and selling industry, including multiple accusations that it has actively been trying to acquire or shut down competitors and stop sellers from using other...
Rockstar and 2K owner Take-Two has called virtual currency “fictions” as part of its bid to get a lawsuit dismissed.
The class action lawsuit filed on behalf of a Californian minor and his mother claims Take-Two is guilty of stealing from NBA 2K players who buy virtual currency and then lose access to it when servers are switched off. The lawsuit calls for refunds on unspent funds if servers are closed.
Game File reported a lawyer representing Take-Two has denied the claims and requested the case be dismissed. “VC [virtual currency] is not plaintiff’s property,” the lawyer stated. “Instead, in-game VC are fictions created by game publishers, subject to the publishers’ terms of service and user agreements.”
VC is not plaintiff’s...
Kadokawa Corporation, the parent company of Elden Ring and Bloodborne developer FromSoftware, has acquired the studio behind Octopath Traveler.
As reported by Gematsu, Kadokawa revealed during its latest earnings results it had made the studio, called Acquire, a "wholly owned subsidiary", placing it alongside the likes of fellow developers FromSoftware and Spike Chunsoft.
Perhaps best known for developing Octopath Traveler and its 2023 sequel, Acquire is also responsible for No Heroes Allowed VR, Akiba's Beat, and Akiba's Trip: Undead and Undressed.
"To strengthen the ability to create IP in games as part of our game business strategy, we have made ACQUIRE Corp. into a wholly owned subsidiary," Kadokawa said.

Call of Duty’s latest Zombies mode is only three months old but fans now fear it’s “dead” after developer Treyarch indicated no new perks or enemy types are planned.
Popular Call of Duty content creator MrDalekJD tweeted to say that during a Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Season 2 ‘Creator Call’, Treyarch confirmed “there are no plans for any new enemy types or new perks to come to Modern Warfare Zombies at any point.”
The news has caused a collective wave of disappointment to crash over the Call of Duty Zombies community, which had already feared the worst following a lack of content relative to Multiplayer and Warzone in the recently released Season 2.
“I feel robbed,” redditor scirvexz said in a post on the Call of Duty Zombies...
It’s sad times for Deus Ex fans following the cancellation of a new game in the series and layoffs at its developer, Eidos Montreal. And it’s a sad time for Elias Toufexis, who famously played Deus Ex protagonist Adam Jensen in the most recent games in the series.
In a heartfelt post on Reddit, Toufexis said goodbye to Adam Jensen, saying: “alas, his story seems done.” While Toufexis confirmed he had not worked on this cancelled Deus Ex game, and expressed hope that another company might pick up the Deus Ex licence, it seems that for now, Adam Jensen is done for.
Here’s Toufexis’ statement in full:
Last month, embattled parent company Embracer Group reportedly canceled this new Deus Ex game after two years of development...
