War Thunder developer Gaijin Entertainment has apologized after using the explosion from the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in key art for the World War 2 massively multiplayer online game. A forum post from community manager magazine2 said Gaijin "accidentally" used the explosion as it was part of a reference pack used by its artists. The explosion, which killed all seven crew members of the Space Shuttle Challenger when the spacecraft broke apart 73 seconds after take-off, had a fairly distinct shape and was thus recognized by War Thunder players when used in the key art. "Hey guys, we have accidentally used the explosion from the Challenger disaster in one of our key art images," magazine2 said. "Please accept our sincere...

Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Erdtree is just a few days old but, predictably, mods for the expansion have already started coming in. Most of the mods targeting Shadow of the Erdtree on Nexus Mods right now make the expansion easier. That’s no surprise, given the reaction so far. As IGN has reported, Steam user reviews currently have a ‘mixed’ rating after a flood of complaints about the rock hard bosses as well as PC performance issues. Belger’s ‘Easy Shadow of the Erdtree’ mod, for example, decreases all enemy damage in the DLC by around 25%. “Many players complain about enemies in SOTE dealing too much damage,” Belger said in the mod description, “so if that’s your case, you can try this mod that lowers it significantly.” Belger...
Square Enix has asked Final Fantasy 14 players not to spoil the highly anticipated Dawntrail expansion upon its early access launch on June 28, 2024. A blog post from Square Enix outlined the early access period, which begins at 2am Pacific / 5am Eastern / 10am UK and is available to anyone who preorders Dawntrail, but closed with a message asking players to be considerate to those waiting for the full launch. "During the early access period, there will be no restrictions on what content you can discuss, post, or stream while following the Material Usage License Agreement," Square Enix said, making clear spoilers will be out in the wild. "However, we ask that early access users please be considerate and do their best to avoid...
Prime Video’s Fallout TV show ended with a clear nod to a much-loved Fallout video game, but there are still many questions left unanswered by Season 1. One thing we do know now is that a major character from the games — and who only makes a brief appearance in Season 1 — will play a part in Season 2. Warning: Spoilers for Fallout Season 1 follow. In an interview with Variety, showrunners Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet confirmed Robert House “will be involved” in Season 2. Fallout video game fans know Robert House as Mr. House, one of the main characters in Obsidian’s Fallout New Vegas. In that game, Mr. House runs New Vegas as a brain plugged into a supercomputer that has extended his existence from the pre-war era into...
One of the developers of Steam and Xbox hit Palworld has teased the release of a PlayStation version. Pocketpair community chief Bucky tweeted adding blue-colored hearts to Palworld’s existing black (PC), green (Xbox), and white (Mac) hearts. Blue is, of course, the color of PlayStation branding. With this context, a PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 release now seems likely. Palworld, dubbed ‘Pokémon with Guns,’ launched in early access form in January 2024 on PC via Steam and on Xbox as a day-one Game Pass title. It saw enormous popularity overnight, becoming one of the biggest game launches of all time. But it’s also one of the most controversial. Pocketpair has said its staff has received death threats amid Pokémon "rip-off"...
It’s been a bruising weekend for many Shadow of the Erdtree players. The DLC’s extreme — and intended - difficulty has sparked a debate about the rights and wrongs of developer FromSoftware’s approach with this Elden Ring expansion. But now that debate has spilled over into Steam user reviews, which currently have a ‘mixed’ rating after a flood of complaints about the rock hard bosses as well as PC performance issues. Ahead of Shadow of the Erdtree’s release, director Hidetaka Miyazaki signaled the DLC would significantly test players’ abilities. "The new challenges for the player are going to be the boss encounters as well as the different kinds of threats that the world will impose on people," Miyazaki told CNET. Some of these...
Welcome back to another week of savings! I know some of you are sporting a Shadow of the Erdtree hangover right now—because I've already served my time in those salt mines—so I'll be brief. Today is all about securing the cheapest preorders from the most recent Nintendo Connect, and PS5 hardware is uncharacteristically reduced for EOFY purposes. Make a play for a 'Station while you can, I guess? In retro news, I'm celebrating the 27th birthday of my personal favourite moustache racer, Mario Kart 64. What sold me was its first-in-series 4P multi, and probably about a hundred hours spent doing "winner plays on" 150cc VS. Mode and Block Fort balloon battles at a mate's house. When the surf was crap in Kiama, his place was basically a...
Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC has only been out for a few days, and many players are already finding that their character — who became the Elden Lord of the Lands Between — is barely a match for the first chakram blade-wielding weirdo you can run into. These early punishing fights are merely a prelude for the raw aggression of the DLC bosses, who are able to turn you into a bloody smear on the ground with just a few attacks. Even worse, this difficulty ramp-up spares no one — regardless of your level, the weapons you wield, or the armor you equip. The key to salvation in the Realm of Shadow lies within a brand new Shadow Realm Blessing system, but if you aren't paying attention you may just miss out on how it works. With a...
What if when playing Mario Kart and you throw a red shell at an opponent, instead of just knocking them aside, you blow them up instead? That’s the kind of outside-the-box thinking Sumo Digital is cooking up with DeathSprint 66, which is basically a real murder-y version of Mario Kart. Set in a dystopian future that’s part GhostRunner, part Running Man, DeathSprint 66 has a story insofar as you play as a runner forced to partake in a deadly race for the amusement of viewers on the internet. This race isn’t just built for speed, however, it’s also built for danger. This futuristic race course is full of buzz saw traps, laser beams, and other deadly additions to make your run truly a run for your life. I was able to play a few rounds...
Fortnite is launching a new mode today, June 22, called Fortnite Reload that features a new map, a ton of classic weapons and locations, endless revives as long as one player on a team remains alive, and no vehicles. As detailed by The Fortnite Team, Fortnite Reload is a 40-player "Fill or No Fill Squads'" experience on a "tighter map" with such POIs as Tilted Towers and Retail Row, and players will be able to return to the action much quicker than other modes. When a player is downed, their individual reboot timer begins and will keep running as long as one other team member is alive. Reboot timers begin at 30 seconds and increase to 40 seconds later in a match, and teammates can decrease the time until their friends return by...
It’s fair to say that creature-collecting games will probably always be popular. There’s just something about catching adorable critters and then training them until they’re unholy abominations that makes us all feel good. It’s also true that if you’re a Digimon fan, then your options for similar games are a lot less numerous than Pokemon-style […] Continue reading...
There’s a concept in business called a “fast follow.” The idea, essentially, is that one company shows a product it’s working on, and another imitates it and gets their version out quickly, taking advantage of the buzz and beating the original to market. Bodycam, made by the two-person team of Reissad Studio, looks very much like it is fast-following Unrecord, a first-person shooter from the perspective of a police bodycam that garnered a lot of attention for its exceptionally lifelike graphics. That’s not necessarily a bad thing – Fortnite adding a PUBG-like battle royale was a literal game changer, for instance. Unfortunately, that’s not the case with Bodycam. While it is an interesting proof of concept in its early access phase, it...
Microsoft has just addressed Black Myth: Wukong's delay on Xbox Series X/S, issuing a brief statement on the matter on Friday. "We’re excited for the launch of Black Myth Wukong on Xbox Series X|S and are working with Game Science to bring the game to our platforms," a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement, first reported by Windows Central and also obtained by IGN. "We can't comment on the deals made by our partners with other platform holders, but we remain focused on making Xbox the best platform for gamers, and great games are at the center of that." Back at The Game Awards 2023, developer Game Science announced an August 20, 2024 release date for Black Myth: Wukong for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Earlier this month...
A Cyberpunk 2077 fan has perfectly recreated armor worn by the game's trauma team, the dystopian, gun-wielding paramedics, down to a working face mask. Cosplay and prop maker Props It Yourself shared a video of the outfit on their Instagram, below, showing someone dressed in the full cosplay of a Trauma Team worker. The futuristic mask begins open before it folds in, seals, and activates its lights as the cosplayer walks forward. Those who've played just a few hours of Cyberpunk 2077 will recognize the Trauma Team outfit as one of the game's opening missions, The Rescue, has them appear. Protagonist V is tasked with saving a kidnapping victim who proves unresponsive, and the Trauma Team, ready to kill any threat to the victim...
I’m never more excited than when I’m playing games where I’m not even sure the main mechanic is fundamentally interesting. Despite hours playing Blue Prince and still thinking about it when I’m doing anything else, somehow, delightfully, I can’t figure it out. This clawing madness - trying to get a sense of whether this is all a waste of time, while happily wasting that time - is a feeling few things have been able to evoke within me. With Blue Prince, the first release from up-until-now film studio Dogubomb, that metagaming sense of not quite having the full picture in mind perfectly mirrors the in-game activity of exploring a procedurally generated mansion in search of its answers and rarely finding any. Hurrying through the grand...
Thousands of Elden Ring players have rushed to beat Mohg, Lord of Blood after developer FromSoftware revealed the optional boss must be defeated before expansion Shadow of the Erdtree can be accessed. Steam Achievement data shows that, when Elden Ring publisher Bandai Namco reminded players to defeat Mohg on June 12, 2024, only 37.8% of players had beaten it already. Now that the highly anticipated downloadable content is available, on June 21, that number has risen to 39.6%. While a rise of almost two percentage points doesn't seem like a lot, Elden Ring has sold a colossal 25 million units since its release in February 2022. Even if just one million of those played on Steam (the actual number is likely much higher), that would mean...
Fortnite has become the unlikely focus of excitement among Lego Island fans after Pepper Roni himself popped up in the game. Lego Tycoon: Tilted Towers, out now within Fortnite, includes a number of challenges that revolve around classic Lego themes, but it’s the addition of Pepper Roni that’s caught the eye. Pepper Roni, who runs the Pizza Shop in Lego Tycoon: Tilted Towers, is lifted from the much-loved Lego Island trilogy. He’s a young delivery boy who delivers pizza to the citizens of Lego Island while working to defeat The Brickster. Mindscape’s Lego Island launched on PC in 1997 and was well-received by critics. Lego Island 2: The Brickster's Revenge followed in 2001, with the final game, Island Xtreme Stunts, coming out in...

The developer of Witcher 3 has congratulated the developer of Elden Ring after the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion overtook Blood and Wine to become the best-reviewed expansion ever. At the time of this article’s publication, Shadow of the Erdtree has a Metascore of 95, whereas Witcher 3 expansion Blood and Wine currently sits on a Metascore of 92. IGN’s Shadow of the Erdtree review returned a 10/10. We said: “Like the base game did before it, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree raises the bar for single-player DLC expansions. It takes everything that made the base game such a landmark RPG, condenses it into a relatively compact 20-25 hour campaign, and provides fantastic new challenges for heavily invested fans to chew on.” Blood...
Elden Ring expansion Shadow the Erdtree will seemingly feature developer FromSoftware's toughest ever bosses, as toning down the difficulty would "break the game itself" according to game director Hidetaka Miyazaki. FromSoftware games are known for being challenging but the conversation around video game difficulty reached new heights thanks to Elden Ring selling 25 million copies. Amid some calls for the developer to make things easier or add different difficulty modes, however, Miyazaki has clarified why FromSoftware instead looks to continuously push players. "If we really wanted the whole world to play the game, we could just crank the difficulty down more and more, but that wasn’t the right approach," Miyazaki told The Guardian...
Someone has made a mod for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt which replaces beloved horse companion Roach with a vicious fiend for Geralt to ride around The Continent. Nexus Mods user apokryphos created the Rideable Fiend Mount mod, which does exactly what it says on the tin, letting monster and monster hunter team up to take on the world. What's more, the fiend even mimics Roach's behaviour by backing Geralt up when not being ridden, and its savage swipes are a touch more effective than a horse kick. Only a handful of Fiends exist in The Witcher 3 naturally, and the massive monsters are always a threat. "Fiends are walking mountains of muscle capped with horned, tooth-filled heads," reads the in-game bestiary entry. "When possible they avoid...
If you're concerned that a little "ting" of euphoria didn't sound when you beat that really hard boss in Elden Ring expansion Shadow of the Erdtree, it's actually intentional. FromSoftware's highly anticipated expansion doesn't have PlayStation Trophies or Steam or Xbox Achievements. The downloadable content, which adds a wealth of new content to beloved role-playing game Elden Ring, is available today, June 21, 2024, and some fans are surprised to see that, despite its roughly 25 hours of additional exploration and bosses, Shadow of the Erdtree doesn't feature a new set of Trophies or Achievements. Releasing an additional set of digital rewards is the norm for big DLC expansions. The DLC for Fallout 4, Horizon: Forbidden West, God...
A Red Faction sequel was in the works at the Embracer-owned developer of Galaxy On Fire and Chorus before it was hit by layoffs, according to a new report. Rock, Paper Shotgun reported that Fishlabs, bought by controversial video game group Embracer in 2018, was working on a sci-fi Metroidvania and had built a “visual prototype” for a brand new Red Faction game before both projects were canceled and their developers laid off in 2023. Embracer had already shut down the original creator of the cult classic Red Faction, Volition, by the time Fishlabs put together its Red Faction pitch. According to RPS, a team at Fishlabs built a “fake trailer” with Unreal Engine 5 to present to Embracer-owned publisher Plaion, with the hope of creating...
Ubisoft has insisted it's committed to the Beyond Good & Evil franchise and even mentioned its long in development sequel as part of the reveal of Beyond Good & Evil - 20th Anniversary Edition. Beyond Good & Evil 2 is considered vaporware by many fans after an incredible 16 years since it was announced back in 2008. Despite Ubisoft’s many vague references to it being still alive, no video game has materialized thus far. But this week's announcement of Beyond Good & Evil - 20th Anniversary Edition has sparked renewed hope that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is real and may even be re-revealed sooner rather than later. This remaster includes a brand new mission in which players can discover mode about Jade’s past and collective exclusive...
Minecraft developer Mojang has released a native PlayStation 5 version in preview form, bringing the game in-line with the Xbox Series X and S version. The PS5 version adds native 4K resolution support and higher settings for render distances and anti-aliasing, settings already available in Minecraft on Xbox Series X and S. Unfortunately, there’s no word on the addition of ray tracing to either the Xbox Series X or PS5 versions, despite Microsoft teasing the tech years ago. The first preview of the native PS5 version of Minecraft is available now for testing. If you own the PlayStation 4 version for your PS5, you can test this early version by heading to Settings and then Preview within the game. This preview includes the new Tricky...
Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki is interested in developing a more traditional Japanese RPG, but if such a project does come to be, don’t expect it to be based on a select few past FromSoftware games. The Dark Souls creator spoke about his desire to explore new gameplay styles during an interview with Rolling Stone. He explains he isn’t interested in leaving his own mark on many previous FromSoftware IP because series like Kings Field and Enchanted Arms are too connected to the work of other developers. “I think a lot of these games are so intertwined with the directors who almost invented that style of game,” he said. “I don’t think there’s a scenario where I myself would make a King’s Field. The same can be said about Otogi...
Finally, fellow Tarnished, we've reached the day of days—launch o'clock for Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree. By now, you would have seen our IGN review for this phenomenal 10/10 masterpiece of a DLC that almost feels like a sequel in its own right. Which, let's be honest, is what you love to hear about a bit of add-on content that's very reasonably priced. Another thing many of us love to hear: a touchstone gaming event like this, that's garnered almost universal praise, has been suitably celebrated with a whizbang edition for diehards. FromSoftware has indeed taken that route with the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Collector's Edition, a not inexpensive bit of kit that we'll be unboxing and tracking bargains for in a moment. (While...
Ubisoft officially announced its long-expected Beyond Good & Evil 20th Anniversary Edition on Thursday, but the publisher deleted its post on X/Twitter about 20 minutes after going live. Still, it didn't take long for the news, which you can see a screenshot of below, to circulate on social media. According to the since-deleted post, it'll arrive pretty soon as well, set to release on all platforms on June 25. It's likely the announcement was the subject of a scheduling mishap, as the remaster had been expected to be revealed at the Limited Run Games Showcase later on Thursday at 11am Pacific. IGN has reached out to Ubisoft for comment. The announcement also arrived with the trailer, which announced that the 20th Anniversary...
