When Blumhouse Games revealed its first six projects last month, some familiar names were noticeably absent. Well known in Hollywood for breakout successes like Get Out and M3GAN, Blumhouse Games shied away from leaning on established properties with its new indie label at the jump... But that doesn't mean they're off the table. "Certainly we will [incorporate established IP] eventually," Blumhouse Games president Zach Wood tells IGN in an interview following June's reveal. "So much of that I think comes down to the right timing. It's the right idea, it's the right creative partner, it's what else is happening with that IP in the world because we want to do it right, and we know that fans are going to come with their own expectations...
Final Fantasy 14's infamous low poly grapes remained untarnished despite the rest of the game receiving a big graphical upgrade upon the release of expansion Dawntrail. As reported by Game Spark and translated by Automaton, developer Square Enix is keeping up the running joke which began in 2022 when it released the Endwalker expansion. This beloved expansion was praised across the board with one small exception: ridiculous cuboid bunches of grapes which essentially have a JPEG printed across them, found in one of its maps. They became an instant meme amongst the Final Fantasy 14 community and even Square Enix eventually got in on the joke too and gave away real world collectibles inspired by the grapes at the Final Fantasy Fan...
The First Descendant’s rough launch continues, with players reporting significant frame-rate drops across PC and console. Nexon’s free-to-download looter shooter launched big this week with a high concurrent player count on Steam, but user reviews are ‘mixed’ in response to what some are calling “microtransaction hell” as well as various performance problems and rewards issues. Check out IGN's The First Descendant review in progress to find out what we think of the game so far. The main performance issue revolves around frame-rate drops across all platforms, which for an action game can cause gameplay problems. Nexon has acknowledged this and suggested a workaround. The developer is linking these frame-rate issues to those who...
EA is delisting Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, and Battlefield: Hardline from the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 digital stores on July 31, 2024. Announced on X/Twitter, the delisting comes ahead of Xbox 360 and PS3 servers for all three games being shut down on November 7, 2024. Thus marks the end of an era for some of the most popular multiplayer shooters of all time. Players who own the games either physically or digitally will still be able to play their single player portions but all multiplayer modes will cease to be playable. All DLC will similarly be removed from sale on July 31. Servers for the PC version of Battlefield 3 will be unaffected by the sunsetting, EA clarified, as will Battlefield 4 and Battlefield: Hardline servers...
Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster completely refreshes the original game but fans who don't love the revised character design of protagonist Frank West can switch back to the original — as long as they preorder. The wholly single player game, which arrives September 19, 2024 at $50 or $60 for the Digital Deluxe Edition, comes with preorder bonuses too, publisher Capcom revealed in an X/Twitter post. Players gain access to the Frank West 2006 skin, the Chuck Greene Skin (from Dead Rising 2), and the Willamette Parkview Mall Bee skin alongside three music tracks. This bonus content isn't included in the Digital Deluxe Edition content by default either despite it including myriad skin packs including ones from Resident Evil and Mega Man...
Nexon’s free-to-download looter shooter The First Descendant has enjoyed a huge launch on Steam but players have hit out at ultra aggressive microtransactions. The First Descendant is a Warframe-esque action game designed to be played co-op with friends, with progression tied to a deep-rooted grind that involves completing missions and defeating bosses. Check out IGN's The First Descendant review in progress to find out what we think of the game so far. But it’s the monetization that has sparked debate during the early days of The First Descendant’s launch, as well as issues giving players rewards they're owed that have forced Nexon into offering compensation. Korean company Nexon, which is behind other multiplayer-focused...
The Steam Summer Sale is in full swing, and it's no doubt shredding many a bank account right now. That being said, if I could draw your attention away from the many 80-to-90% off deals, I'd point out that the not oft discounted Baldur's Gate 3 is down by 20%. Also, anybody after a difficulty hit that's arguably as brutal as Shadow of the Erdtree, best go invest in that half-off Sekiro GOTY. Reasonably priced PTSD for all! In retro news, I'm celebrating the 32nd birthday of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Truth be told, I was a Mega Drive kid to begin with, though I lived opposite a SNES guy, so I had the benefit of both worlds (until I just went out and bought one myself). While I had the goods on him with some of "our"...
Warning: this article contains spoilers for The Acolyte's fifth episode! If you haven't already, be sure to check out IGN's review of The Acolyte: Episode 5. The Acolyte's fifth episode rejuvenated Star Wars fans' affinity toward the series thanks to its kick-ass lightsaber fight scene and palpable online fervor for its villain's exposed musculature. While The Master's ties to series villains like Kylo Ren have yet to be officially revealed, his flowy armor and yoked arms owe their inspiration to a surprising source: scantily clad Elden Ring badasses like Let Me Solo Her. In a recent interview with Inverse, The Acolyte showrunner Leslye Headland shed some light on the early character design process of The Master (AKA The Stranger AKA...
Tales of Kenzera: Zau developer Surgent Studios has been hit with a round of layoffs, the studio confirmed in a statement on X/Twitter on Tuesday. The statement, which you can read in full below, clarifies that just over a dozen employees were affected, acknowledging that Surgent is unfortunately only one of many studios seeing layoffs this year. "It's a difficult time in the games industry, but we remain incredibly proud of our entire team's work on ZAU and of the praise it has recieved from critics and players alike," the statement says. "Our focus now is on supporting those affected, continuing our work on ZAU, and looking to the future with our next creative projects." Surgent Studios founder and Tales of Kenzera director...
I think Neva and I are going to get along quite well. To this end, people who know me know what kinds of games I like: first-person shooters, point-and-click adventures, story-driven third-person action-adventures, and puzzle-platformers – or as I like to call them, Limbo-likes. If your game tells a poignant, emotionally compelling story with a beautiful art style, gorgeous music, and no dialogue whatsoever, then there is a good chance that I’m going to really like that game. It doesn’t always pan out, though; Black The Fall was a shameless and mediocre clone of Playdead’s seminal 2016 masterpiece Inside. Somerville was made by an ex-Playdead developer but couldn’t quite reach the narrative heights of Limbo or Inside. But Neva, the...
Dragon Age: The Veilguard will have a number of difficulty options that allow players to tweak the experience to their liking. Developer BioWare revealed more about the latest installment in its fantasy franchise as part of this month’s Game Informer cover story. Features like the hundreds of character customization sliders and pronoun options separate from your character’s gender live up to game director Corinne Busche’s promise that Dragon Age: The Veilguard was created with inclusivity in mind. This desire was carried over into the difficulty options too, which include standard choices like the story-focused Storyteller path, a balanced Adventurer mode, or the more crushing Nightmare mode, which can’t be changed once a playthrough...
Activision has issued an update for Call of Duty Warzone that nerfs a number of weapons that had come to dominate the meta. The highlight here is a nerf to the Kar98k after the iconic Call of Duty marksman rifle was added to the game in Season 4 and came to dominate battle royale just as it did Verdansk when Warzone launched. The Kar98k has seen three adjustments with today’s patch: Lower Torso Modifier decreased to .95x, down from 1.1x. Arm Modifiers decreased to .95x, down from 1.2x. Leg Modifiers decreased to .95x, down from 1x. Meanwhile, the Superi 46, which had become an instant meta submachine gun with its release as part of Season 4, is also nerfed. There are two adjustments here: Lower Torso Modifier decreased to 1.1x...
Ubisoft appears to have revived a takedown animation spotted in a 2012 Assassin's Creed 3 demo for upcoming Japan-set Assassin's Creed Shadows. As reported by GamesRadar, Reddit user BrunoHM noticed similarities between the 2012 PAX East demo of Assassin's Creed 3 and a recent trailer for Assassin's Creed Shadows. While taking down an enemy, the former's protagonist Connor jumps on their back to stab them before doing a forward roll to continue his momentum. And what appears to be the exact same movement can be seen performed by Assassin's Creed Shadows' dual protagonist Naoe. "Considering the pivot blade and dynamic seasons returning, I wonder if we have some fans of [Assassin's Creed 3] within [Assassin's Creed Shadows' developer...
It feels like an age since Rockstar broke the internet by releasing the debut trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6. Since the December 2023 release of GTA 6 Trailer 1, as it’s called, information-hungry fans have analyzed the trailer to within an inch of its life, coming up with all sorts of outlandish theories and predictions about what to expect when Rockstar finally releases the game next year. Now, though, they have something tangible to work with, something more than speculation to chew on: a necklace. As redditor DogWifDreads signaled, the latest GTA Online update, Bottom Dollar Bounties, appears to have added the necklace worn by perhaps the standout character from the GTA 6 trailer: the woman in the bikini. Comparing a screenshot...
Transformers is getting a racing adventure rogue-lite called Transformers: Galactic Trials, due out in October on PC and consoles. It’s the first ever console Transformers racing game. Transformers: Galactic Trials is published by Outright Games, which specializes in video games for kids, and developed by 3DClouds. Outright said that in this new unique hybrid gameplay experience you can play as iconic Autobot and Decepticon characters across a single-player mode, with two-player co-op in local multiplayer for the Arcade mode. Here’s the official blurb: As players progress and collect new relics, they level up their skills and unlock new playable characters and skins. The single-player mode, called Galactic Trials, lets you...
Microsoft has confirmed the Xbox Game Pass July 2024 Wave 1 lineup, revealing what subscribers can expect for the first half of this month. Kicking things off on July 3 is Typhoon Studios’ 2020 action adventure Journey to the Savage Planet (Cloud, Console, and PC), which makes a return to the Game Pass library. IGN’s Journey to the Savage Planet review returned a 6/10. We said: “This comedy exploration experience blasts off with a lot of fresh ideas, but doesn't quite stick the landing.” Also on July 3, Fair Play Labs’ Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 (Cloud, Console, and PC) hits Game Pass. This Nickelodeon-based platform fighter got a 9/10 from IGN’s review. We said: “Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 knocks nearly every single one of the...
A developer on MultiVersus has hinted that Scorpion from Mortal Kombat is set to hit the brawler. Player First Games community manager Ajax replied to a Scorpion MultiVersus concept posted to X/Twitter in a way that confirmed nothing but teased everything. MultiVersus is a Warner Bros. take on Nintendo’s Smash Bros. series, and includes a number of characters owned by the company, such as DC superhero Batman and The Matrix villain, Agent Smith. Warner Bros. also owns Mortal Kombat and its developer NetherRealm, so it would make sense to see the series’ famous ninja turn up in MultiVersus at some point. MultiVersus re-released across PC, PlayStation and Xbox in May after a beta ran from July 2022 to June 2023. On Steam, the May...
The impact of all-conquering metaverse battle royale Fortnite on Call of Duty — indeed the competitive multiplayer video game landscape — is a topic of long-running debate. In truth, Activision left Call of Duty’s military sim tone behind long ago, resulting in what players have now: a no-holds barred fusion of pop culture and modern warfare. But Call of Duty’s latest gun has thrust that debate back into forums and social media once again, and that’s because it’s perhaps the silliest weapon ever seen in the first-person shooter franchise. Dataminers unearthed the trailer for the “Extra Crispy” gun, which lets users cook, eat, and turn their enemies into fried chicken. Call of Duty dataminer @realityuk_ was first to bring it to fans'...
Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster brings back the classic zombie game without its original voice actor, who has said publisher Capcom didn't ask him to return. As reported by ComicBook, original Frank West voice actor Terence J. Rotolo responded to a fan in an Instagram message, shared by @FrankByDaylight on X/Twitter, saying he wasn't contacted by Capcom for the remaster and "the reasons are the producers' own." Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster was announced on June 27, 2024 as, unsurprisingly, a remaster of the original Dead Rising. Capcom released a trailer alongside the announcement too but fans were quick to notice a new voice behind the classic protagonist Frank West. "The answer to your question is I have no answer," Rotolo said. "All...
It is widely accepted that Microsoft’s Xbox Series X console is the most powerful ever made, so why do some games run better on Sony’s PlayStation 5? That’s a question finally answered by the tech experts at Digital Foundry. Both Microsoft and Sony launched the next-generation of consoles at the same time, November 2020, and while the less powerful Xbox Series S obviously struggles on the performance front, the Xbox Series X is a tech monster; it's capable of 12 teraflops of GPU performance, whereas the PS5 is capable of 10.28 teraflops. Xbox executives have said they wanted to avoid repeating the narrative established in the last generation, where the Xbox One was significantly underpowered compared to the PlayStation 4 resulting in...
Word is there's quite a lot of influenza going on out there, which means some of you might be grateful for some cheap indoor diversions. Gaming may not be the cure for common pestilence, but the discounts I've arrayed before you will feel like the prescription for stupidly-priced fun and adventure. Case in point: those many-multi-hour (yet highly reduced) Final Fantasies... In retro news, I've made a big cake with a 25 on it for Ape Escape, the first game to explicitly require a DualShock controller. In these modern times where the dpad is a vestigial limb, it's difficult to explain just how exciting it was to transition from that clunky cross to twin analog sticks. Cameras could be controlled like we were Spielberg. Platforming...
With rumors flying that Resident Evil 9 is on the verge of being revealed, Capcom has confirmed that the next entry in the storied survival horror franchise is now in development. Development will be led by Resident Evil 7: Biohazard director Koshi Nakanishi, who confirmed the new sequel in the course of talking about the previous game's mobile release. "It was really difficult to figure out what to do after [Resident Evil 7]," Nakanishi said. "But I found it, and to be honest it feels substantial. I can't share any details just yet, but I hope you're excited for the day I can." Nakanishi has a long history with Resident Evil. In addition to Resident Evil 7, which helped revitalize the series in 2017, Nakanishi directed Resident...
Capcom announced a Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess demo during its Next livestream, along with a surprise: it'll be available today. The demo, Capcom said, will allow you to play part of the main story, and there's no limit on playtime or the number of times you can play. It'll be available on all the platforms Kunitsu-Gami is releasing on: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows, PS5, PS4, and Steam. And that's not all: Capcom also unveiled a collaboration with its beloved 2006 hit Okami. The collab will include Okami-themed costumes for Kunitsu-Gami's main character, Soh, and the Maiden Yoshiro, as well as special weapons and music. Capcom added that if enough people work together and complete the bonus unlock compaign between...
After unexpectedly teasing the game last week, Capcom has shared new details on Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, confirming among other things that it will release on September 18, 2024. Saying "it wouldn't be an exaggeration to call this game a remake," developer Rysosuke Murai said the new release will run in 4K 60fps on the RE Engine, and will include quality-of-life improvements like the ability to move while aiming, as well as improvements to NPC behavior. Capcom has also "fine-tuned the interface" and added autosave functionality, and the story will be fully-voiced in nine languages. In addition to the standard edition, Capcom is planning to release a digital deluxe edition that will include additional costumes and mall...
The Elden Ring community's favorite folk hero, Let Me Solo Her, has finally completed the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, after a streaming marathon spanning multiple days during which he struggled repeatedly against the DLC's final boss. Warning: Spoilers for the ending of Shadow of the Erdtree follow below! Tsuboi Klein, also known as Let Me Solo Her, has been steadily working his way through the new Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree with the rest of us. Just yesterday, he finally crossed the finish line, defeating Promised Consort Radahn live on stream after something in the vicinity of 74 attempts. Despite being thought of as something of an Elden Ring expert, Let Me Solo Her really struggled with the second coming of Radahn...
Scientists, the original nerd, occasionally like to remind us of that fact by influencing the real world with a geeky reference, this time with a spider name after a flying beastie from Monster Hunter. As reported by VG247, a newly discovered spider from China has been named the Otacilia Khezu after Khezu, the flying wyvern from Monster Hunter. What do spiders and flying wyverns have in common? Nothing, really, but this spider has no eyes, just like its namesake. Khezu, which look like fairly normal wyverns from the shoulders down but quickly break that tradition with incredibly long necks, a giant fanged mouth, and retracted eyes due to spending most of their time in darkness, were introduced way back in the original Monster Hunter...
Elden Ring challenge streamer DrDeComposing has forced Shadow of the Erdtree’s final boss to sit down and face the music by defeating the monstrous enemy while using the doots from an electric saxophone to control his Tarnished warrior. Hidetaka Miyazaki and FromSoftware certainly didn’t pull any punches when setting the difficulty of Elden Ring’s first and only piece of DLC. The time following Shadow of the Erdtree’s June 21 launch has seen countless players struggle with the extreme challenge posed by the new content. Their plight has triggerest the creation of a slew of mods designed to make the DLC easier, along with the release of an official update that rebalanced the DLC's difficulty scaling system. Warning: mild spoilers for...
Dino Crisis is now 25 years old, with the first game in the series launching on PlayStation on July 1, 1999. Capcom’s much-loved dinosaur survival horror game has seen three games so far, the first of which remains the best-selling with 2.4 million sold. Dino Crisis 2, which followed a year later in 2000, sold 1.2 million copies. Dino Crisis 3 launched as an original Xbox exclusive in 2003 and fans have yet to see a new game since. Despite the occasional groundswell of opinion that Dino Crisis should return from hardcore fans, Capcom seems uninterested in reviving the franchise. Indeed Capcom's 2022 announcement of Exoprimal, a multiplayer-focused action game featuring dinosaurs, was seen as the final nail in the coffin for Dino...
Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida has apologized for the issues present in Dawntrail, the latest expansion currently available in early access. In a blog post, Yoshida apoligized to fans who preordered the game and thus unlocked the early access version, and explained what has caused certain issues and how the development team at Square Enix plans to address them. He also suggested a hotfix would arrive sometime "this week" alongside a brief server maintenance period. "Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who has been playing Dawntrail since the start of early access," Yoshida said. "However, I would like to offer my sincere apologies regarding the issues that we have identified." Xbox version issues have perhaps been most...
Spoiler Warning: This article contains some spoilers for the ending of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt alongside a handful of minor spoilers from The Witcher book series. A Witcher 3 modder has discovered and restored a huge chunk of gameplay cut from the beloved role-playing game's ending by developer CD Projekt. This extended ending, outlined by YouTuber xLetalis and modded by glassfish777, begins after protagonist Geralt's fight with Witcher 3's main antagonist, Eredin of The Wild Hunt. Geralt is pulled away from this fight after his victory by potential partner and powerful sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg in the actual game, but in the cut content instead wakes up in a tent, being seen to by two doctors. A restored cutscene here shows...
