gamescom 2024 has come and gone, and as the annual event ends, now comes the time for awards to games that appeared this year. With categories, such as best visuals and audio to more platform-specific ones (excluding Nintendo this year), like best Xbox games, this list provides every gamescom 2024 award and this year's recipient. Of this year's recipients, Capcom's upcoming project, Monster Hunter Wilds, won the most awards, winning in every single category it was nominated in, such as Most Entertaining and Most Epic. Supermassive Games and Bandai Namco's upcoming project, Little Nightmares 3, also won multiple accolades, winning three out of the four categories it was nominated for, such as Best Visuals and Best Audio. If you want...
Avowed will run at a “baseline” of 30 frames per second across Xbox Series X and S, developer Obsidian has confirmed. Speaking on the Iron Lords Podcast, art director Matt Hansen said Obsidian is “targeting a baseline of 30fps” for the first-person fantasy RPG. 60fps sounds unlikely, however, even on the more powerful Xbox Series X. Explaining, Hansen said Obsidian decided to go for 30fps in order to facilitate fancier visuals, and that because Avowed is a first-person, single-player game, “you don’t necessarily need that 60 frames.” It’s a first-person, single-player game, you don’t necessarily need that 60 frames. “We are targeting 30 frames per second, bare minimum," Hansen said. "That’s the expectation. “It’s a first-person...
Sega is asking Yakuza/Like a Dragon fans if they want celebrities such as Keanu Reeves, Mark Hamill, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and more in upcoming games. Reddit user JohnConquest shared an email they received from Sega asking their feelings about franchises such as Crazy Taxi and Persona. When it came to Yakuza/Like a Dragon, it also asked how celebrity cameos affect player enjoyment and if they'd be interested in a long list of stars appearing in future games. Alongside video game adjacent stars such as Reeves, Hamill, Jack Black, Rami Malek, and David Hayter came actors who've previously appeared in the franchise including Matthew Mercer (who played Goro Majima in Yakuza: Like a Dragon) and Danny Trejo (who lent his likeness and...
Whatever happened to Helldivers 2’s review bomb cape? This unique in-game item was inspired by the review bomb campaign Helldivers 2 suffered on Steam after publisher Sony made PlayStation Network accounts mandatory for PC gamers on Valve’s platform. Developer Arrowhead decided to turn the user review history graph into a cape, which is ready for launch but has yet to release. Nearly four months since Sony’s dramatic U-turn on Helldivers 2’s PSN account requirement, the review bomb cape is still M.I.A. So, what’s the problem? As part of an impromptu AMA on the Helldivers 2 Discord, Arrowhead creative chief Johan Pilestedt said the delay has to do with a lack of clarity on Helldivers 2’s sales status in those countries in which PSN is...

Warning! Black Myth: Wukong spoilers follow. If you’re playing through Black Myth: Wukong right now, you’ll be familiar with the action RPG’s boss fights. The game is packed full of them, and some offer a significant challenge. But what if you could gain a helping hand from one boss as you fight another? That’s exactly what’s possible in Black Myth: Wukong via a super cool secret IGN unearthed while playing this week. It turns out that in Chapter Two, you can summon a hidden boss to defeat a required boss — if you find a bunch of items first. The boss fight in question is the Stone Vanguard, which is found in the Fright Cliff area. You might have encountered this boss already, or even defeated it. But did you notice the large rock...
We finally got our first glimpse of Civilization VII's gameplay during gamescom 2024, and it's already looking much different than anything we've ever seen from the legendary series. That includes a huge shakeup to the way that Civilization VII progresses thanks to its new "ages" system, which is designed to break its progression into something like chapters. We already checked out Civilization VII in first preview, which left us with a pretty positive outlook on the anticipated sequel. Still, we had plenty of questions for creative director Ed Beach, who sat down with us for an interview at gamescom. Read on for his thoughts on Civilization VII's new structure, whether it will incorporate elements from the previous game's Gathering...
There are less than two months to go until Bloober Team's highly-anticipated remake of Silent Hill 2 drops, and if you are trying to figure out how long it will take you to beat Silent Hill 2 Remake from beginning to end, the game's director finally has some answers for you. In a couple of replies posted on X/Twitter, Silent Hill 2 director Mateusz Lenart responded to two separate posts to explain how long it would take for someone to beat the game. According to Lenart, the first playthrough is expected to take players "around 16-18 hours" on average. If you are the completionist type or an avid trophy hunter itching to get the platinum in Silent Hill 2 Remake, Lenart notes that you will need to put in a few more hours. Explaining...

In recent years, Amazon Games has become known for MMOs like Lost Ark, Throne & Liberty, and Blue Protocol — massively multiplayer games from predominantly Asian publishers built around grinding. But even with several new releases on the horizon, including a Lord of the Rings MMO, there are signs that Amazon Games is ready to move on from one of the genres that has defined it. In an exclusive interview with IGN, Amazon Games boss Christoph Hartmann talked about the label's plans in the wake of revealing King of Meat, a new hack-and-slash co-op game that Hartmann calls Amazon's "first step out of the MMO genre" as it seeks to expand its publishing portfolio. "As you know, we have Tomb Raider and others, so that's obviously happening...
Nintendo fans are still anxiously awaiting news on the Nintendo Switch 2, which isn't expected to be out until after April 2025. But Amazon Games CEO Christoph Hartmann says fans should be patient, praising the Switch as a "great device" and saying that the label will support the next-gen Switch whenever it arrives. "Yeah, we obviously plan to develop games for it and I can't wait for it to be out. I mean, honestly, I'd rather have them wait a year and get it perfect than rush it to the market and then we all complain about what doesn't work," Hartmann says. "Switch has been such a fantastic product, I can wait another year if I have to. And from development, I think most non-Nintendo developers are not exclusively doing titles for...
The bosses in Crimson Desert are powerful. I mean really powerful. As the formidable Staglord grabbed me by the ankle and hurled me into a wall, the bone-crunching impact reminded me of how The Stranger’s blows catapulted Kratos through tree trunks and mountains in God of War. This intense, deity-like physicality lends Crimson Desert’s battles a sense of genuine spectacle – these are the gladiator battles of myths. During an hour-long hands-on session at gamescom 2024, I was able to go toe-to-toe with three different bosses, each of which showcased a different side of this fantasy action RPG’s approach to battle. The first, the aforementioned Staglord, is perhaps the most simple (although that does the towering, barbarian-like warrior...
Last year, Blizzard launched a new event in World of Warcraft: Classic called Season of Discovery. The game mode offered players the chance to explore an old-school version of the MMORPG as it existed back in 2004, but with a twist. Players would be able to collect “runes” that would transform their characters into wacky new variations like mage healers or shaman tanks. New quests and other secrets were said to pepper the world, and certain dungeons were converted into larger, more challenging raids with new bosses and new loot. It was an exciting event, one that hinged on surprise and, as the title suggested, discovery. The problem? Datamining. Through datamining, curious players were able to “discover” all the new runes, bosses...
Inzoi, The Sims competitor from PUBG developer Krafton, has temporarily released its incredibly in depth character creator and players are using it to recreate a ton of real people and pop culture characters. From The Addams Family and Breaking Bad to Harry Potter and Naruto, not to mention real-world figures such as pop stars and past presidents of the U.S., Inzoi players on reddit have already shared many characters made in its realistic Creation Studio, which is available to download on Steam until August 25 at 9pm Pacific. Recreating video game characters has been a popular choice for many. These have so far included Connor from Detroid: Become Human by Raz0712, Ada Wong from Resident Evil by HHRSN17, and even a slightly...
Infinity Nikki, an open-world dress up role-playing game from former The Legend of Zelda director Kentaro Tominaga, has hit 12 million pre-registrations before a release date has even been announced. The game's official X/Twitter account announced the huge milestone, thanking everyone who's signed up already and encouraging more to sign up. A total of 12,206,661 players have signed up for the game so far, but developer PaperGames' next target is 20 million, followed by 25 and 30 million. "Look, some airborne friends are carrying Nikki across the vast sky with their blessings," the post said. "Thank you to all the stylists for your support and enthusiasm. There will be more surprises ahead. Let's aim for the next goal together."...
When Black State was first welcomed to the world via a visually impressive, Metal Gear Solid-ish teaser earlier this summer, some doubted its legitimacy as a game. Was it purely a tech demo injected with the purpose of showing off Nvidia’s shiny RTX tech? Was it another entry in the recent trend of “too good to be true” game reveals walking in the sorry footsteps of The Day Before? Well, I’ve played Black State, and am more than happy to report that not only does it appear to be a real game, but also a really promising one full of gory, explosive action and cinematic sci-fi style, powered by handsome visuals and a playful physics engine. My demo started by taking control of a stealth-suited long-haired man aboard a cargo ship. It’s...
Capcom is finally removing gendered armor from the Monster Hunter series in 2025's Monster Hunter Wilds, meaning any character can wear any equipment. Game director Yuya Tokuda revealed during a presentation of Monster Hunter Wilds that the much requested feature would finally be implemented after more than 20 games and 20 years. "In previous Monster Hunter games you had male and female armor, but I'm happy to confirm that in Monster Hunter Wilds there's no more male and female armor," Tokuda said via a translator. "All characters can wear any gear." Monster Hunter fans have already expressed excitement over the change, as a post titled "We Defeated Gender" currently sits with 10,000 upvotes on the series' Reddit page. "Finally get...
Gearbox chief Randy Pitchford has responded to social media posts resurfacing his prediction that Steam would become a "dying store" amid the announcement that Borderlands 4 will ditch Epic Games Store exclusivity to launch on Valve's platform at the same time. Five year ago, Pitchford predicted that Steam “may look like a dying store” in the future, with “other competitive stores ... the place to be.” At the time, Fortnite maker Epic was at the height of its attempt to disrupt Steam’s monopoly on the PC games market by offering developers a more generous revenue split than Valve does. Borderlands 3 went on to launch as an Epic Games Store exclusive on PC, much to the annoyance of some PC gamers. Two years later, documents made...
Scalpers can get in the bin, as Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree Collector's Edition is back in stock and on sale right now at Amazon during its Gaming Week sale from August 22-28. These are still incredibly popular, meaning it's extremely time-sensitive and could sell out. We couldn't just sit by and not shout about it. The Collector's Edition is down to £149.99 for PS5 and Xbox at Amazon, £70 off the list price and £100 off compared to retailers like GAME listed it for. If they are out of stock by the time you're reading this again, make sure you're following @IGNUKDeals on Twitter/X for immediate updates for when they come back. So what's included? Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree (base game not included), a Figurine of Mesmer...
Concord, Sony’s live service hero shooter, has been in development for around eight years. That’s according to lead character designer Jon Weisnewski, who joined the development team at Sony-owned Firewalk Studios five years ago to work on the game. Weisnewski tweeted to celebrate this week’s launch of Concord (it’s available to play now across PlayStation 5 and PC for Digital Deluxe Edition owners, but its full release is set for tomorrow, August 23). “The game has been in development for around eight years and I’ve been there for almost five of them,” Weisnewski said. “We don’t get a lot of Launch Days in our careers so today is special for a ton of reasons. Oblige me some good vibes today.” Concord is a 5v5 first-person shooter...
Avowed was a surprising delight to play for the first time. After a lot of questions about the shift in art direction from the teaser trailer, questions about the length, and a combat demo on the Xbox stage that had many asking if the game was earlier in development than expected, I’m happy to report that Avowed is feeling great, looking great, and offering a compelling story based on the early slice I played at an event. My journey began just after the opening main mission in Avowed, and we’ve been sent on a task to find an Aedyran Expedition team. It turns out, as it often does with RPGs, that fate had other plans for them. Kai, our green-skinned companion who just happens to be voiced by Mass Effect’s Garrus Vakarian actor Brandon...
2K and Hangar 13 surprised just about everyone yesterday when it announced the next entry in the Mafia franchise. However, following its launch, some found information that suggested the game would not have Sicilian (or Italian) voice acting in the upcoming project despite it being set in Sicily. Fortunately, 2K has reassured fans that it will be present in the game. In a statement posted on X/Twitter, the official Mafia account confirmed that The Old Country will "offer voice acting in Sicilian." It further confirmed what was already made public on the Steam page: the Italian language localization will be available for the game's subtitles and in-game UI. 2K and Hanagr 13 are issuing the statement for clarification as some on the...
It’s been a while since a known gamer resided in The White House. The first, and last, to do so was former President Barack Obama, who brought a Nintendo Wii with him when he took office and, according to someone who played against him, apparently mains Captain Falcon in Super Smash Bros. But depending on the outcome of the 2024 election, The White House may soon have a second gamer in residence: current Minnesota governor and vice presidential candidate Tim Walz. But Gov. Walz isn’t bringing a Nintendo Wii with him (that we know of), nor has he attempted to settle his political disputes in Smash to our knowledge. His gaming habits are, surprisingly, a bit deeper a cut than that. It turns out that Gov. Walz is reportedly a fan of the...

Bethesda and MachineGames are carving out a place in Disney history with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, but the upcoming action-adventure spinoff will also include at least one reference to a more obscure (at least on the big-screen) story from the franchise's world. Bethesda revealed a new look at the Wolfenstein developer’s latest during a trailer shown at the gamescom Opening Night Live presentation yesterday. It’s a video that confirmed a release date of December 9, 2024, for PC and Xbox Series X | S, while also revealing that PlayStation 5 players will be able to join in on the adventure next spring. In between shots of Indiana punching nazis and solving ancient puzzles, X/Twitter user @tylerllewtaing noticed that the...
The original Dying Light’s story ended with protagonist Kyle Crane suffering a miserable fate; either blasted to atoms by a nuclear bomb or twisted into an infected. But that, it turns out, wasn’t the end of his story. Techland’s new entry in the series, Dying Light: The Beast, appears to lock in the latter of those endings as canon, revealing Crane was held captive for 13 years, subjected to experiments by a villain known only as The Baron. Now free, Crane seeks revenge for the trials and tortures that have turned him into the titular beast. But, if what I’ve seen of this new Dying Light is representative of the entire game, it’s not the beast powers that change the game – it’s the guns. Dying Light: The Beast began life as DLC for...
One of the most intriguing projects featured at gamescom 2024 isn’t a game at all, but an animated series. Prime Video’s Secret Level is an anthology series by the creators of Love, Death + Robots. Each episode is basically a short film inspired by the characters and worlds of iconic video games like God of War, Mega Man, Unreal Tournament, and Pac-Man. The first trailer for the series gives us a brief glimpse of these gorgeously animated shorts and the often surprising ways in which they reinvent familiar gaming icons. But which games are featured in the series, and is that really Keanu Reeves piloting a mecha suit? Let’s break down exactly what we see in the trailer. Armored Core Perhaps the biggest surprise in the Secret Level...
Inzoi, The Sims competitor from PUBG developer Krafton, is drawing in a lot of new fans through its character creator demo, which shows off its ultra realistic graphics. Krafton has deployed the same strategy as the likes of Dragon's Dogma 2 and others by releasing the character creator portion of its game early. The Inzoi: Character Studio currently available on Steam will only be there for a few days, however, until August 25 at 9pm Pacific. The full version of Inzoi is expected in late 2024 and is described as "a life simulation game where players become gods within the game, allowing them to change everything as they wish and experience endless new stories in various forms of life." This already had fans of The Sims turning...
