First things first: Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s Zombies is a return to the fan favorite round-based co-op mode of 1-4 players surviving wave after wave of zombies that escalates in challenge and difficulty each round. The story picks up after the events of 2020’s Black Ops Cold War and continues the Dark Aether storyline with a cast featuring the returning Weaver, Grey, and Carver – who have been imprisoned – along with the new character of Maya as playable in Zombies. Each has their own storylines. Also returning is former villain William Peck, who acts as your guide, along with Oskar Strauss and Raptor One in support roles. What I can say is that I enjoyed my time playing Zombies. Treyarch seems to have established a strong balance of...
Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead Game Studios is facing fresh backlash from the community after nerfing fire damage weapons days before releasing its pyromaniac-themed premium warbond, Freedom’s Flame. The balance changes introduced by this week’s Escalation of Freedom update include a number of tweaks to the game’s fire damage system designed to make flame-spewing weapons behave “more realistically." Some frustrated community members have taken to social media to complain the update has dramatically nerfed fire-based weapons such as the flamethrower, once considered a potent antidote to armored terminids chargers. Helldivers 2’s Steam page has seen more than 2,000 negative reviews push its recent review score from ‘mostly...
Upcoming medieval time travelling action strategy game Kingmakers is getting a live action film from the studio behind myriad upcoming video game adaptations such as the Tomb Raider animated series and Dredge film. Media company Story Kitchen has announced a collaboration with Kingmakers developer Redemption Road Games and publisher TinyBuild to bring the highly anticipated game to the big screen, asking the question: "What if Braveheart had time travel?" The film doesn't have a release date yet, though neither does Kingmakers itself beyond a vague 2024. "Go back in time to a war-torn medieval era with a vast arsenal of modern weapons, change the course of history, and save the future in this action/strategy sandbox," reads the...
Arkane Studios co-founder Raphaël Colantonio has announced his next game, being developed at WolfEye Studios, is a first person action role-playing game which will make fans of Dishonored and Prey "feel at home." The currently unnamed game will be "an ambitious new IP built upon the DNA of earlier Arkane games to deliver a rich and detailed world, freedom of how to play, and a deep RPG experience." WolfEye studios, led by Dishonored co-creator and Prey director Colantonio, is primarily made up of former staff from Arkane Lyon and Arkane Austin, the latter of which Xbox shut down in May 2024. Three screenshots from the game were shared too, below, showing a retro sci-fi aesthetic very much familiar to fans of the aforementioned Arkane...
Batman. Justice League. Harry Potter. Looney Tunes. Game of Thrones. The list of intellectual property owned by Warner Bros. Discovery is massive, and an awful lot of it seems ripe for being turned into a video game. If you're thinking WB's been a little slow to leverage that library, it sounds like the company's leadership agrees, and is looking not just to make more of its own games, but to license out some of its biggest franchises to other game studios in the future. Today on the Warner Bros. Discovery Q2 earnings, call CEO David Zaslav and president of global streaming and games JB Perrette responded to a question about the "strategic value" of games to Warner Bros. given recent "uneven performance". The company had just reported...
I should not be playing Space Marine 2 like this. Even the game warned me not to. Regardless, here I slog, a puny level 1 Aspirant in a Ruthless difficulty op recommended for level 15 Angels of Death. Why am I here? For the glory of the God-Emperor. To feel the full grimdark direness of 40K. And because I’m a bloody idiot. Through sheer grit, spit, and spite, I’ve clutch-killed a path through a swarm of Tyranids to my main objective. I’m caked in mud and blood. I’m out of medicae and depleted of lives, so my two beloved AI chapter brothers cannot resuscitate me. When these four rounds in my sidearm go, we’ll be down to pistol whips and harsh language. As I crest the last hill and prepare to cry victoriam, the shout dies upon my...
Ready at Dawn, a venerable game studio that once worked on God War and Daxter among other projects, is closing its doors. Android Central reports that Meta is shuttering the studio effective immediately, with employees being encouraged to apply for other positions within Oculus Studios. The closure follows Meta's decision to discontinue Echo VR in 2023, which coincided with major layoffs impacting a third of the studio. Oculus Studios had previously acquired Ready at Dawn, which had found success with the Lone Echo series, to develop VR games for its platforms. "As many have already heard, this morning Ready At Dawn Studios is closing its doors. I've been at RAD for over 10 years and I am incredibly sad to see this wonderful team...
Warner Bros. Discovery reported today that its game revenue suffered a major drop this quarter from the same period last year, largely due to weak performance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Games revenue, under the WB Games division, dropped 41% year-over-year. Though Suicide Squad's struggles were the main culprit, it was admittedly up against stiff competition: last year's comparable included strong sales of Hogwarts Legacy, which launched in February of 2023 and continued to do exceedingly well throughout the year that followed. It sold 22 million copies in 2023 alone, and has since reached 24 million. Suicide Squad, meanwhile, was panned by critics and called "disappointing" by WB Discovery boss David Zaslav last...
Jumping headfirst into Mecha BREAK’s chaotic, frenzied combat is overwhelming at first. That’s partially because its presentation is dizzyingly stylish, with flashing neon beams and blisteringly fast mecha screaming through the sky as you and your teammates do your best to capture a king-of-the-hill-like objective or push a payload. The chaos amps up the energy and tension of each skirmish, and certain bots (like my favorite: the Falcon) have additional abilities to help kick up the speed of a match even further. Mecha Break showed lots of promise during my last hands-on preview in January, and now, after a few more hours of hands-on time with the multiplayer mech shooter in its open beta, I’ve had the opportunity to experiment with...
It’s been one year since Baldur’s Gate 3 launched, and now, developer Larian Studios has revealed how players chose to navigate their journey through its Dungeons & Dragons video game. The studio unveiled a smorgasbord of stats in a lengthy X/Twitter thread. While it includes interesting data related to Baldur’s Gate 3’s soul-crushing permadeath Honour Mode and which characters fans favored over others, it also reveals that 1.9 million players were, at one point or another, turned into a wheel of cheese. Another crucial stat update reveals that while everyone’s favorite dog, Scratch, was pet 120 million times, The Owlbear Cub and His Majesty the cat received only 41 million and 141,660 pet attempts, respectively. What matters most...

Helldivers 2 is still crushing it. Despite some serious drop-off to its player base, the community is still going strong, with an average of around 40K divers diving at any given moment. The developer, Arrowhead Studios, even had to slow down adding new content to the game with their Warbonds, because players were still taking their time unlocking everything in previous ones. Helldivers 2 has committed to keeping players engaged with their game, and so far it seems to be paying off. Now, it’s time for their first big expansion. Escalation of Freedom which adds difficulty level 10, a new swamp map type, new enemies from both the Terminids and Automatons, and new mission types. Shaking things up is always necessary for any...
Warhammer 40K has spread so far and wide from its humble tabletop origins that I would almost consider the fantasy of being one of the Adeptus Astartes – a Space Marine – as being on-par with being Batman or a Jedi Knight at this point. And Space Marine 2 brings me closer to that fantasy than any previous game has. At its best, it's practically 40K nirvana, mowing down disorienting numbers of Tyranids with a heavy bolter or cutting a path through them with a chainsword. At times, the controls can get a little clunky – especially on a controller. But I suppose some of that comes with being an eight-foot-tall juggernaut coated in ceramite. I had access to the first little bit of the campaign, which has Clive Standen (aka Rollo from...
WolfEye Studios president and co-founder of Arkane Studios Raphaël Colantonio has said Dishonored and Prey fans “will be happy” with his new studio's next game. Colantonio, who left Arkane in 2017 after co-creating Dishonored and directing Prey, teased WolfEye Studios' next game on X/Twitter by saying “fans of the previous first person games I was involved with (Dishonored and Prey) will be happy” with it. “We’ll reveal a bit more about our next game in a few days,” he added. Colantonio's WolfEye Studios was formed in 2019 following his departure from Arkane Austin. The studio's first game, a third person dark fantasy adventure called Weird West, got a positive reception following its 2022 release on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. In...
Welcome to Wednesday, start of the homestretch into a weekend you should stock cheap games for. I've got a whole bunch of things worth squirreling away, too, like that Pandora's Box of Borderlands titles, budget LEGO games on Switch, and more. Head sub-level to start the savings in earnest... In retro news, I'm celebrating the 22nd bday of Alien Hominid, a Metal Slug-ish by the folks who would go on to craft Castle Crashers. Uploaded as a Flash browser game on the legendary multimedia website Newgrounds, Alien Hominid was one of the first notable indie darlings that really turned my head. It was tough as nails, great in two-player, and revitalised OG run 'n' gunning for a modern audience. Better yet, it sported a hilariously...
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is being ported onto last-gen consoles. Developer Respawn Entertainment announced today that PS4 and Xbox One owners will get to play Cal Kestis' latest journey next month. In a press release, Respawn confirmed that the PS4 and Xbox One port of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will be available starting September 17. EA CEO Andrew Wilson announced last August during an earnings call that a PS4 and Xbox One port of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was in development. In addition, the developer confirmed that a new update for the PC version of Jedi...
Lollipop Chainsaw RePop hasn't suffered another delay but is instead being bumped up nearly two weeks to September 12, 2024. As reported by Gematsu, developer Dragami Games confirmed the change would affect all versions of the game — PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch, and PC — in North America, Central and South America, and Europe. The previous release date of September 25 came after another delay out of summer 2024 and before that 2023, but as its latest September 12 date is just a month away, it's likely Dragami Games will stick to this one. Lollipop Chainsaw RePop is a remake of the original Lollipop Chainsaw which follows high school cheerleader and zombie hunter descendant Juliet Starling as she fights...
Silent Hill 2 Remake developer Bloober Team wants fans to give its version of the beloved survival horror game a chance. Game producer Piotr Babieno told Rolling Stone that Bloober Team appreciates fans offering their feedback on Silent Hill 2, which he said has been "invaluable in refining our project before its release," but admitted the developers need to ignore some chatter to focus "on their creative work with peace of mind." Gameplay has caused some concern the remake is changing too much from the original and becoming too action focused. But even Bloober Team itself said a particularly controversial trailer was handled by not it but publisher Konami, and wasn't "in the spirit of what used to be." I am dreaming that gamers...

In a press release, Behaviour Interactive confirmed that the Castlevania chapter in Dead by Daylight will be available starting August 27. The chapter will introduce two new playable characters: Dracula will be the latest killer joining the roster, while Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse protagonist Trevor Belmont will be the new survivor. The creator of popular deck-building poker inspired game Balatro has taken legal steps to ensure his creation can never be used to promote actual gambling, even after his death. Balatro is a roguelike that challenges players to earn an ever increasing number of chips by playing joker-enhanced cards to overcomes the challenges set by opponents known as ‘blinds’ and final round bosses. Despite being steeped in gambling terminology and luck-based gameplay mechanics, there are no real-world gambling elements in the game, or even microtransactions for that matter. An Activision leak has seen the Warzone map presumably debuting alongside Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 revealed and it's already proving controversial amongst fans. As reported by Charlie Intel, footage showing a Warzone map called Avalon leaked as a result of Activision uploading a build of the game to the PlayStation Network database and therefore making it accessible to those on PlayStation 4. Most of the clips have been removed from X/Twitter and replaced with a message which reads: "This media has been disabled in response to a report by the copyright owner." The gameplay remains available and heavily discussed on a Reddit post from JenNettles, however, where many fans are expressing concern at its design. The backlash comes...
Yakuza / Like a Dragon characters like Kiryu Kazuma and Ichiban Kasuga probably won't show up as expansion fighters in other games like Mortal Kombat or Tekken anytime soon. Series producer and writer Masayoshi Yokoyama told Polygon he didn't think Yakuza characters appearing in other games was a good idea, and developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio will instead stick to exploring other mediums like it's doing with the Like A Dragon: Yakuza Prime Video series premiering on October 25, 2024. "Going across mediums like we did with [the Prime Video series] is better, rather than just going to another game," Yokoyama said. "We receive all kind of invitations to appear in other games, but we never actually went over to their doorstep and said...
Dungeons & Dragons celebrated its 50th anniversary at Gen Con, the largest tabletop game convention in North America, by pulling in Baldur's Gate 3 stars Neil Newbon and Samantha Béart for a one shot campaign role-playing as their actual characters from the game: Astarion and Karlach. The adventure saw Critical Role alumnus Aabria Iyengar act as Dungeon Master while Anjali Bhimani and Brennan Lee Mulligan joined Newbon and Béart as players. "Hey soldiers, my name's Karlach Cliffgate," the latter said when introducing herself, to immense cheers from the crowd. "Tonight I have decided I'm going to play a certain paler vampire type out for a good time," Newbon said on his turn. "So my name's Astarion. Hello darling." The entire campaign...
An animated series based on Squanch Games’ High on Life is reportedly in the works with Curb Your Enthusiasm's J.B. Smoove attached as a producer. These first details on the video-game-to-show adaptation come from Deadline, which says that Smoove will produce the project via his Alternate Side Productions banner. He starred as Gus in Squanch’s first-person shooter upon its release in 2022, and although the site says there is a “good chance” he’ll play a part in the series, he’s not officially joined the cast yet. In addition to live-action roles in movies like Date Night and Spider-Man: Far From Home, Smoove has provided his voice talents in projects like Max’s Harley Quinn, Teen Titans Go!, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012)...
