Borderlands 4’s narrative director has hinted at a cut-back on the toilet humor the series is famous for. Gearbox’s Sam Winkler tweeted to say he remains “firm” in his criticism of Borderlands 3’s “overabundance of toilet humor.” Then, responding to a user who joked that they wouldn’t be able to use “the poop poop farty 4,000 while doing a mission to clean up porta-potties with my companion skibidi toilet!?!?!?” Winkler said: “I’m not gonna say there’s no toilets but if the word skibidi ships in the game under my watch I’m gonna cry real tears.” The Borderlands series, which began with the first game’s release in 2009, is known as much for its humor as it is its loot-driven gameplay. The tone of the jokes have remained relatively...
If you’ve spent any time with NetEase’s new hero shooter Marvel Rivals, then you already know that the game features many powerful heroes and villains. Yet with a base roster of 33 characters, some were inevitably going to rise to the top of the heap once players got their hands on them. Memes and humorous videos about the game have already taken social media by storm, with many focusing on which characters are causing tons of frustration and annoyance for the game’s ten million plus playerbase. After playing a few hundred matches of my own, I’ve found certain ones are far more dreaded than others. So today, we’re going to rank the top Marvel Rivals characters by how much they’re driving fans crazy. Obviously this list could change in...
The developer of recently-announced virtual pet simulator game Catly has responded to allegations that the game's trailer and marketing was produced using generative AI, saying that no such technology was used in its announcement at The Game Awards, nor in the game itself. In a statement shared with IGN, a PR representative authorized to speak on behalf of developer SuperAuthenti said that generative AI was not used to produce the trailer, nor the game. Furthermore, the representative said the developer was "very surprised by such speculations," adding that "We do not think there are any existing AI tools that can produce a video like that. Industry experts have echoed this opinion." The PR representative also showed IGN a version of...
It’s fitting that in the year of the 30th anniversary of the original PlayStation, two of the console’s biggest franchises — Tekken and Final Fantasy — are collaborating once more. The two names are nearly synonymous with the PlayStation brand, and more than that share a development history not many know about. “I guess we can talk about [it] now since so much time has passed. Back around Tekken 3, a lot of our staff left the team and actually went to Square,” Tekken executive producer Katsuhiro Harada reveals in a sit down interview with IGN. Given Tekken 3 was in development during 1995 and released a year later, there were likely several ex-Tekken staff lending their 3D development skills to what would likely have been the only...

The PC is arguably the definitive gaming platform, deeper and broader than any of the bespoke boxes you stick under your TV. It has become a catch-all for multiplatform games, an inevitable second home for first-party console exclusives, and a bastion for smaller games that may not be able to develop ports. It’s also a destination of its own for unique, mouse-and-keyboard-driven genres that just aren’t quite as comfy to play while sitting on a couch, while also being the place for portable-friendly games thanks to the likes of the Steam Deck. Unsurprisingly, it meant we had a lot of games to pick from when it came to crowning our 2024 PC favourites. While plenty of incredible games came to both the PC and other platforms this year...
FromSoftware titan Elden Ring has now outsold the entire Dark Souls franchise thanks to a sales boost seemingly spurred by expansion Shadow of the Erdtree, though still ahead of spin-off Elden Ring Nightreign launching next year. Elden Ring publisher Bandai Namco announced the open world role-playing game has now sold 28.6 million units, up 3.6 million from the 25 million revealed in June. And as pointed out by @ZhugeEX on X/Twitter, this means its outsold the Dark Souls series' 27 million. FromSoftware launched Elden Ring in February 2022, meaning its reached the impressive 28.6 million sales figure in two years and ten months. Dark Souls, meanwhile, arrived in 2011 with follow-ups Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3 arriving in 2014 and...
Welcome back to another week of equal parts gaming and saving. I'm tracking a very lucrative VR Humble bundle that has some Bethesda greats worth losing hundreds of hours within. There's also a mighty fine price on a Switch OLED + Mario Wonder. Lastly, I've spotted It Takes Two, A Way Out, and Okami HD all going for rather incredible discounts on a variety of storefronts. Classics all. Please acquire. In retro news, I'm using some Yoshi eggs to make a 31st birthday cake for Super Mario All-Stars. Back in the day, if you owned this cartridge and a SNES, you were livin' large and envied by all. Remakes of Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2, and Super Mario Bros. 3 awaited within, and they all had...

My wife and I are expecting our first child soon, so I’ve spent the better part of a year reflecting on big concepts like leadership, responsibility, accountability, and trust. I’m considering who I am and how exactly I’m supposed to raise another human and not pass on all of my worst traits. It was in this emotionally raw state that Mouthwashing came along and punched me in the face. While mechanically simple – there’s not much to do besides talk to other characters, pick things up, and search the spaceship you are confined to – it tells its story in a way that couldn’t be done without the burden of interactivity, taking full advantage of what sets games apart from the likes of movies or TV. And I don’t use the word burden lightly, as...
For the first couple of minutes, the trailer for Elden Ring Nightreign is… not exactly predictable, but certainly understandable. It’s Elden Ring like we’ve never seen it before, remixed and reassembled, but still unmistakably a return to The Lands Between. And then… is that The Nameless King from Dark Souls 3? And then you rewind and pay closer attention. Yes, that is The Nameless King from Dark Souls 3, and he’s not the only boss from FromSoftware’s back catalogue making a comeback. Another rewind and another closer inspection reveals that friendly NPCs from Dark Souls have also arrived in the world of Elden Ring. Not only that, but even gameplay mechanics from across the developer’s portfolio of work have found their way into this...
An Elden Ring Nightreign beta test starts in February 2025 with registration opening from January 10, publisher Bandai Namco has announced. The network test is a “preliminary verification test in which the selected testers play a portion of the game prior to the full game launch,” Bandai Namco said in a post on its website. “Various technical verifications of online systems will be examined by conducting large-scale network load tests.” Only the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S are listed as platforms for the network test, which means the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam all miss out. Elden Ring Nightreign is FromSoftware’s standalone co-operative spin-off set in a world parallel to that of 2022’s Elden Ring. It was...
A total of 461 employees of ZeniMax Online Studios have officially unionized under the Communications Workers of America banner, according to an announcement from the union yesterday. The union consists of web developers, designers, engineers, and graphic artists at ZeniMax Online Studios working on massively multiplayer online role-playing game The Elder Scrolls Online. They are mostly located in Maryland, but are also based in various states including California, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin. Together, the new union will be known as ZOS United-CWA. ZeniMax owner Microsoft has formally and voluntarily recognized the union already, in accordance with its past Labor Neutrality Agreement. "With a union, we are looking...
FromSoftware surprised everyone at The Game Awards 2024 last night with the reveal of co-op spin-off Elden Ring Nightreign, but if that's not shocking enough, it also features bosses from Dark Souls. Fans were quick to notice the debut trailer for Elden Ring Nightreign appeared to feature one of Dark Souls' most infamous bosses, the Nameless King from Dark Souls 3, and game director Junya Ishizaki confirmed to Famitsu, in an interview translated by Automaton that baddies from Dark Souls will in fact appear. Their appearances will be limited, Ishizaki said, as they represent creatures that have strayed into this twisted version of Limgrave from other universes. While he only mentioned Dark Souls, this theoretically opens the door for...
With the Illuminate finally live in Helldivers 2, Sony has released the new Urban Legends premium Warbond to aid players in their defence of Super Earth. The arrival of the alien Illuminate invasion fleet also brings with it new urban environments to fight in. These colony planets include narrow streets and close encounters, and so the new additions to the game revolve around a defensive, War of the Worlds-type action. Urban Legends adds Helldivers 2’s first melee secondary weapon, the SQC-19 Stun Lance. This extra-large poker offers good range and pairs well with the SH-51 Directional Shield stratagem, Arrowhead social media and community manager Katherine Baskin said in a post on the PlayStation Blog. As game director Mikael...
It's official. The Last of Us Part 2 is coming to PC on April 3, 2025, as we learned via a trailer at The Game Awards 2024. Yup, that's The Last of Us Part 2! It joins a growing tradition of Sony releasing its first-party exclusives on PC several years after their launch, which includes Horizon: Zero Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima, Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart, and God of War (2018). Earlier this year, reliable leaker Billbil-kun suggested that The Last of Us Part 2 would be the next PlayStation exclusive to join them, and even that development on it was wrapped up. However, it was speculated that its release had been held back to coincide with the 2025 release of season to of HBO's The Last of Us show...which seems to have been an...
In one of the starrier announcements of the night, Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul and prolific voice actor Laura Bailey took The Game Awards stage to reveal Dispatch, a game with a pretty stacked cast. Along with Paul and Bailey, the voice cast also includes Jeffrey Wright, Erin Yvette, Jacksepticeye, Moistcr1tikal, Alanah Pearce, Travis Willingham, Joel Haver, Lance Cantstopolis, Matthew Mercer, and Thot Squad — so, notably, a solid mix of traditional Hollywood actors and video game- and streaming-adjacent talent. Dispatch comes from AdHoc Studio, which was founded by several former Telltale Games devs. It'll arrive sometime in 2025. We didn't learn too much from the announcement, but from the looks of things, the Telltale DNA is...
Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead has announced and released the long-awaited Illuminate update, dubbed Omens of Tyranny. Unveiled during The Game Awards 2024, Helldivers 2 has expanded to herald the Illuminate invasion of Super Earth planets in the galactic south. This initial alien force brings with it a number of new enemies to fight against as well as brand new Super Earth colonies to fight on. These colonies introduce Helldivers 2’s first urban environments, with city streets packed with innocent civilians who are mind-controlled by the Illuminate. The Voteless, as they’re called by Super Earth, are little more than zombies who want nothing more than to team players limb from limb. In an interview with IGN, game director Mikael...
In an incredible surprise no one saw coming, a big orchestra and a man with a big drum took the stage at The Game Awards 2024 to reveal Hideki Kamiya's studio's new game. And it's not an new IP - much to our delight, it's an actual, real sequel to Okami. Okami 2. We didn't see much of what Okami 2 actually will be during the show. The reveal consisted of some gorgeous music from the aforementioned orchestra and drummer, and a teaser of presumably Amaterasu running through a field toward the horizon. More to come soon, one must hope! Capcom has been seeding the ground for a new Okami, quietly, for a while now. Earlier this year, it polled fans to see if they were interested in an Okami sequel, alongside sequels for Dead Rising, Mega...
It seems remarkable that Mafia: The Old Country and Grand Theft Auto 6 may end up releasing within a few months of each other, more remarkable still that they’re both owned by the same parent company. Both games are about crime, murder, and getting up to no good, and while one is set in 1900s Sicily and the other a fictional representation of Miami, you’d be forgiven for thinking the developers of Mafia: The Old Country would prefer a bit more breathing room from the behemoth that is GTA 6. But in an interview with IGN ahead of Mafia: The Old Country’s trailer reveal at The Game Awards 2024, game director Alex Cox and Hangar 13 president Nick Baynes dismissed those concerns, and even distanced their game from comparisons to GTA 6. GTA...
Mafia: The Old Country has a new trailer (officially this time!), offering a first proper look at what publisher 2K and developer Hangar 13 describe as a “linear, narrative-driven” sequel. Releasing in summer 2025 across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, Mafia: The Old Country is set in 1900s Sicily, years before the first Mafia game and its sequels. While it occupies a place within the existing Mafia universe, Mafia: The Old Country tells a brand new story with a new cast of characters about the origin of the mafia itself. You play a new, original protagonist called Enzo, who survived a childhood of indentured labor in Sicily’s sulfur mines to join Don Torrisi's crime family. Structurally, Mafia: The Old Country is a...
Sega has announced Sonic Racing CrossWorlds with a fleeting teaser trailer at The Game Awards 2024. It's due out "soon" across PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch. Be sure to check out IGN's round-up of everything announced at The Game Awards 2024 for more on what's coming to the world of gaming in the years ahead. Developing... Onimusha is officially back. Capcom announced that the classic action series, which last received a proper sequel on the PlayStation 2, is getting a new entry on modern consoles. The first trailer was shown during The Game Awards 2024, revealing a dark fantasy action game that bears a resemblance to popular Soulslike games. It's being developed for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam and is set to release in 2026. "A lone samurai steps forth—his blade sharpened, soul anew. The Onimusha series by Capcom reawakens with Onimusha: Way of the Sword, a brand new title coming in 2026," the official description reads. The original Onimusha: Warlords was released in 2001 and received a remaster in 2019. We wrote in our original review...
Today at The Game Awards 2024, Pocketpair brought a brand new trailer for Palworld showing off the game's previously-teased next expansion, entitled Feybreak. Feybreak is scheduled to arrive very soon, on December 23, 2024. Feybreak was teased just last month, referred to as the "largest, harshest, and most mysterious" island added to Palworld so far. It's supposedly six times bigger than Sakurajima, the last new island added. And it's coming ahead of a planned crossover with indie game Terraria, which is expected in 2025. We were fans of Palworld when it first came out in early access, giving it an 8/10 and saying that while it "may crib quite a bit from Pokemon's homework," its "deep survival mechanics and a hilarious attitude make...
Yakuza / Like a Dragon developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has revealed Project Century at The Game Awards 2024, a new action game set in 1915 with some absolutely fantastic vibes. Despite a pretty lengthy trailer, we don't actually know much about what Project Century is. It looks kind of like a classic Yakuza action game, with a tough guy protagonist walking around what we probably can safely assume is Japan, beating people up. But this is much gorier than we're used to seeing, the protagonist seems to be a mystery man we haven't met before, and the Japan we're exploring seems to have some sort of alt-history stuff going on? Neat! Fans will likely be surprised at the announcement given RGG Studio only revealed its last game in...
Turok is back, but the famous dinosaur hunter is looking a little different. At Thursday's Game Awards, Saber Interactive officially announced Turok: Origins — a "new evolution" of the classic dinosaur-hunting franchise that first debuted on the Nintendo 64 and PC in 1997. In a marked shift for the franchise, Turok: Origins will feature third-person action instead of being a first-person shooter. Additionally, multiplayer will be fully integrated into its main campaign, with Turok supporting up to three players via co-op. Turok: Origins' title hero will don a high-tech "biomorphic suit" that allows him to use DNA captured from enemies, which grant him abilities like the power to summon lightning. It will feature semi-open...
It’s official: FromSoftware is making a multiplayer Elden Ring spin-off. One of the biggest announcements at The Game Awards 2024, Elden Ring Nightreign is sure to shock fans of FromSoftware’s Souls games. This three-player PvE game is unlike anything the legendary developer has made before, and it’s fair to say it’ll raise more than a few eyebrows across the internet. Ahead of the game’s reveal, IGN’s Tristan Ogilvie got the chance to play Elden Ring Nightreign (check out our impressions here) and interview game director Junya Ishizaki to find out where this surprise departure from the hugely successful Souls formula came from, how it all fits in with Elden Ring itself, and whether it should be considered a live service game. Read...

From the discovery of sprawling, subterranean otherworlds to the startling second phases that completely turned the tables in so many of its boss fights, 2022’s Elden Ring was a mesmerising action RPG adventure that surprised players at almost every turn. Now, more than two years later it appears that developer FromSoftware isn’t done with pulling the rug out from under the feet of its fanbase just yet, with the surprise reveal of Elden Ring Nightreign, a standalone co-op spin-off that takes the cautious dungeon crawls of Elden Ring and turbocharges them into propulsive, slash ‘n’ dash speedruns. After spending some six hours of hands-on time with this bold new spin on FromSoftware’s own Soulslike formula, I can confirm that Nightreign...
