Cardy, Matt, and Emma are here to discuss Sony's unveiling of the PS5 Pro and whether it's worth the high price that's been set. Eve Online developer CCP has announced Eve Frontier, a spin-off of the much-loved MMO that adds controversial blockchain and cryptocurrency elements. CCP describes Eve Frontier as an online space survival game with an open and persistent sandbox that focuses on “self-reliance, tactical and emergent gameplay, and third-party development.” Here’s the official blurb: On the face of it, Eve Frontier sounds like an exciting alternative to Eve Online that could scratch a hardcore space survival itch, but the inclusion of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology that has sparked a backlash from Eve Online players, some of whom have let CCP know how they feel across social media and subreddits. CCP explains its use of crypto as...
4A Games, the developer of the Metro series, is set to remain within Embracer Group after Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 developer Saber Interactive declined to exercise its option to buy the studio. When Saber spun out of Embracer via Beacon Interactive, a company controlled by Saber co-founder Matthew Karch, it had the option of bringing 4A Games along with it. That is no longer happening, Embracer announced. Now 4A Games, as well as Zen Studios, the Hungarian studio responsible for Pinball FX and Zen Pinball, will remain at Embracer. In a statement, Embracer’s controversial co-founder and CEO Lars Wingefors said: “We are satisfied with the conclusion of this transaction and very glad to see the great teams and assets of 4A Games...
The developer of Palworld has revealed a conundrum it faces as it looks to the future: take the game free-to-play and live service, or stick with its current pay-to-play model. Palworld is the phenomenally successful multiplayer survival crafting game that's been dubbed ‘Pokemon with guns’ for its inclusion of creatures called Pals. It launched on Steam priced $30 and straight into Game Pass on Xbox and PC earlier this year, breaking sales and concurrent player number records in the process. Japanese developer Pocketpair has said the game was so popular, it couldn’t handle the massive profits the game generated. While player numbers have declined somewhat since Palworld’s explosive launch, it remains one of the most-played games on...
Tales of the Shire is delayed to early 2025, its developer has announced. Tales of the Shire is a cozy life sim set within The Lord of the Rings universe originally due out this fall across PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch, and Netflix Games. It’s developed by Wētā Workshop and published by Private Division, the embattled subsidiary of Take-Two. Ahead of a deep dive on the game set for September 22 (the annual Hobbit Day celebration for The Lord of the Rings fans because it marks the birthdays of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins), Wētā Workshop said it delayed the game to ensure it delivers its vision. “All of us here at Weta Workshop are excited to have you join us in the Shire, a peaceful corner of J.R.R...
Annapurna Interactive's entire gaming staff has resigned from the company following a leadership dispute, according to a Bloomberg report. The report, which IGN can confirm based on conversations with our own sources, states that Annapurna Interactive president Nathan Gary had recently been in negotiations with Annapurna founder and billionaire Megan Ellison to spin the gaming segment off as its own company. However, Ellison eventually pulled out of negotiations, at which point Gary resigned. Almost 30 other individuals, including division co-heads Deborah Mars and Nathan Vella, as well as the entire remaining staff of Annapurna Interactive, joined him. While negotiations were still ongoing, Annapurna Interactive re-hired former Epic...

Remember when Chewbacca died? In the 1999 book The New Jedi Order: Vector Prime by R. A. Salvatore, Han Solo’s faithful Wookiee partner, Rebel Alliance fixture, and big walking carpet Chewie bought the moisture farm. Not surprisingly, he died a hero, saving thousands of lives. It was a pretty big deal, even for those Star Wars fans (like me) who didn’t read the Expanded Universe books and comics at the time. Vector Prime got a big promotional push, including a commercial featuring Mark Hamill doing voiceover as Luke Skywalker, and the book even made it to the New York Times Best Sellers list for four weeks. But that was then and this is now, where the EU is known as Star Wars Legends and “doesn’t count” anymore, and a character...
If you grew up as an arcade lover in the ’90s, chances are you logged countless hours playing Capcom’s Marvel games. They were a staple of arcades around the world and helped define the fighting game genre. And now, a selection of those classic games have been brought back as part of one package, Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics. It brings these games to modern consoles (which is particularly notable for one of the games) and adds lots of new features, some of which make them more accessible to new players than ever before. Here are what we think are the top 5 features of this collection: A Journey Across Time The collection consists of seven games from throughout the ’90s and early 2000s: The Punisher...
It’s been ten long years since Dragon Age: Inquisition and the expectations for the next game in the series, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, seem impossible. A full decade, a bevy of behind-the-scenes changes, cuts at BioWare, and a somewhat divisive start when its unveiling began in earnest in June made me a little worried for my most highly anticipated game of the year. But one of my biggest concerns was my impression, based on early previews, that it was headed in the direction of being a linear action game rather than its more open-world predecessor. While Dragon Age is known for changing its style with each installment, I hoped dearly that it wouldn’t lose too much of the DA DNA I fell in love with. After hours of hands-on time spread...
EA developer Respawn has released Patch 9 for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, its single-player romp in the galaxy far, far away. The patch notes, below, outline significant performance upgrades to the 2023 game, but only on PC. First and foremost, some fans will be pleased to hear EA has removed Denuvo DRM, meaning digital rights management some believe affects performance. Other performance improvements include framerate upgrades, ray tracing optimization, and improvements to keyboard and mouse gameplay. Several bug fixes have been made too. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor launched last year to positive critical reception and commercial success but some users were left with a buggy, broken version of the game, even after a big day one...
Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead has revealed the PC and PlayStation 5 co-op shooter's next Premium Warbond, dubbed Chemical Agents, alongside a September 19 release date. While Chemical Agents does not include any new weapons, it adds two stratagem variants — the TX-41 Sterilizer, which lets you spray a gas at the Terminids and Automatons, and the Guard Dog's ‘Dog Breath,’ which is a corrosive gas sprayer — and, in keeping with the alien exterminator theme, the G-4 Gas grenade, which covers the whole area in a cloud of noxious fumes. Explaining the decision to include new stratagem variants but no new weapons, Katherine Baskin, social media and community manager at Arrowhead, said in a post on the PlayStation Blog: “Adding stratagem...
As someone who prefers high-adrenaline rollercoasters over the teacups, visiting amusement parks can be thrilling and Planet Coaster 2 understands this well. Building your own park in the original Planet Coaster remains entertaining eight years later, something Frontier Developments hopes to build upon with new water park rides, improved visuals, and better construction tools. I recently went hands-on with the PC version, and I'm confident the upcoming sequel will be worth the admission. Anyone familiar with Planet Coaster or Planet Zoo will feel right at home, and your goal remains drawing in visitors to earn as much money as possible. This preview showcased two of the three upcoming modes - Sandbox Mode offers a pleasing level of...
Since we first visited a galaxy far, far away back in 1977, there have been a few glimpses at the universe’s dark underbelly – the “wretched hive of scum and villainy”. As early as A New Hope’s brief excursion to the Mos Eisley cantina for our first meeting with Han Solo, it was clear this was a galaxy filled with colourful characters who wouldn’t necessarily play by the rules. But while Star Wars projects like Solo and The Book of Boba Fett have spotlighted this infamous criminal underworld and its syndicates, it is only the franchise's latest video game that truly takes a deep, worthwhile dive into this murkier, darker corner of the universe. Star Wars Outlaws is filled with criminal enterprise, backstabbing, and syndicates vying for...
Tony Hawk has said he’s talking to Activision again and is working on something Pro Skater-related with the company. In an interview with Mythical Kitchen (via VGC), the world famous skater teased plans to celebrate Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater’s 25th anniversary later this year. “I wish I could tell you more, but I can tell you that I have been talking to Activision again, which is insanely exciting. We’re working on something,” Hawk said. “That is the first time I’ve said that publicly. “It will be something the fans will truly appreciate.” Neither Activision nor parent company Microsoft has announced any new Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater plans. The series has been dormant since 2020's well-received Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2, a set of...
Ubisoft is adding offline modes to both The Crew 2 and The Crew Motorfest but isn't bringing back the original game following its shutdown in March. The publisher said on X/Twitter that it heard fans' concerns about the two currently active The Crew games eventually being pulled too, and would add the offline modes as a result. The Crew first launched in December 2014 but, almost a decade later, was pulled from storefronts and taken offline, meaning even those who paid full price for the open world racer could no longer play it. Fans responded with frustration and anger at the decision, but also worry what the policy meant for the two games still available. "We heard your concerns about access to The Crew games," Ubisoft said...
Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt has finally added AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 with Frame Generation to the PC version of the game. Patch 2.13 for Cyberpunk 2077 and expansion Phantom Liberty is being rolled out now on PC only (patch notes are below), but despite the version mismatch between PC and console, cross-progression will still function properly. AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (FSR3) combines image upscaling with frame generation technologies to generate high resolution frames at fast frame-rates. You can enable it in Settings → Graphics in the Quick Preset section, CD Projekt explained in a post on its website. There’s also a separate setting to enable FSR Frame Generation. Note that FSR Frame Generation can...
Payday 3 director Miodrag Kovačević is stepping down following a disastrous first year for the live service heist shooter. Developer Starbreeze Entertainment posted on X/Twitter to announce the change in management, saying Kovačević will work as a designer on Payday 3 instead. Lead producer Andreas Penninger and global brand director Almir Listo will act as the "creative force" behind the game "in the interim," though the long term future of Payday 3's leadership remains hazy. "Going into year two, [Kovačević] will be stepping away from his role as game director and focusing his efforts as a designer elsewhere in the project," the post said. "In the interim, while researching and planning year two, [Penninger] and [Listo] will be...
Xbox Game Pass Standard, the new basic tier of Microsoft's subscription service which costs $14.99 a month, doesn't include major games such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Starfield, Diablo 4, and much more. Microsoft announced the revised Game Pass tiers in July and as of September 12 the changes went into place. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate has risen from $16.99 to $19.99 a month and still includes all the typical benefits, but the Xbox Game Pass Standard tier is quite different from its predecessor. It replaces Game Pass for Console (though those already subscribed don't have to upgrade) and includes significantly less benefits. Subscribers no longer gain access to day one titles or access to EA Play, Xbox Cloud Gaming, perks...
If you've somehow not taken the plunge on From's 10/10 masterpiece, now's the time to accessorize with an Elden Ring. Speaking of things to die for/from, I'm also all about some deep discounts for Dragon Ball FighterZ, GTA V, The Crew Motorfest, and Gotham Knights. Experiencing the latter for 15 clams (and preferably a co-op bud) is worth making Bat-time for. In retro news, I’m celebrating the 21st birthday of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. I can recall coming to this straight from a blast through Jedi Outcast and not being enthused with what met me… at all. An olden days setting with no Jedi I know? Meh. Turn-based combat? Blech. And then, I slowly, magically fell completely in love with everything about KOTOR—the world, my...
Space Marine 2 is off to a great start. Yesterday, Saber Interactive announced that its Warhammer 40K action game reached 2 million players, and it has retained consistently high concurrents on Steam. Now Saber Interactive CEO Tim Willits, who served as studio director at id Software until 2019, is claiming that Space Marine 2 is selling many of the games in id's famed franchises. He's backed up by former CEO Todd Hollenshead, who departed id Software in 2013 and currently works with Willits at Saber. "Todd Hollenshead (former CEO of id Software) and I believe that Space Marine 2 is the fastest selling game we’ve ever worked on, including all the Quake, DOOM, Wolfenstein, and RAGE games over the years," Willits claims. IGN has...
I find the word “cozy” to be dreadfully overused when assigning genres to video games these days, but it’s hard to find another adjective that so perfectly captures what I love about Dragon Quest. Straightforward but rewarding turn-based combat paired with a classic hero’s journey told in a picturesque fantasy world result in a wonderfully traditional RPG experience I’ve always found so comforting. So when I was given the choice at a recent preview event to try out Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake on either PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch, the choice to settle in on the couch in the Switch’s handheld mode was an easy one. And rest assured, Switch owners, Dragon Quest 3 looked and ran great on the aging Nintendo system. Square Enix’s...
Sony has revealed the full line-up of PlayStation Plus Games Catalog additions for September 2024, which includes The Plucky Squire, Far Cry 5, and more. Announced on the PlayStation Blog, a total of 13 games are joining the library, nine on the PlayStation Plus Extra tier and four on the PlayStation Plus Premium Tier through the Classic Games Catalog and PSVR2 offerings. They're available September 17. September perhaps doesn't have as many heavy hitters as last month, which included The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Wild Hearts, Ride 5, Watch Dogs 2, Cult of the Lamb, and more. PlayStation Plus Games Catalog Additions for September 2024 The Plucky Squire | PS5 Under the Waves | PS4 + PS5 Night in the Woods | PS4 + PS5 Chernobylite | PS4...
Space Marine 2 has its first patch following its record-breaking launch, but don’t expect big changes — those are coming in a larger update due later in September. Publisher Focus Interactive announced that a small hotfix (hotfix 2.1) is out now for the Saber Interactive-developed Warhammer 40,000 action game across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S (check out the patch notes below). It focuses on crashes and bug fixes, with a PC-only optimization for behavior on high-end CPUs thrown in. The big, hotly anticipated patch that Focus has already confirmed adds the much-needed ultrawide support and private PvE lobbies is due out later this month. We’ve got plenty more Space Marine 2 coverage, including details on its...
Editor's Note: This review takes a fresh look at Fortnite in 2024, replacing our previous review from 2018. You can read more about our review policies and philosophy here. It’s wild to think about how much of gaming culture over the last decade has been defined, at least in part, by Fortnite. This is a game that began humbly before expanding wildly into a juggernaut of an online sandbox, where somehow Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender can crash a sports car into a Stormtrooper outpost before popping out and shooting Family Guy’s Peter Griffin with a neon assault rifle and then gliding away on a Cacodemon from Doom. But despite the absurdity of that sentence, Fortnite isn’t just a collection of branded cardboard cutouts scattered...
Last month I went hands-on with Crimson Desert to try out some of its brutal boss battles. I left the demonstration impressed by its fast combat system and spectacular monster designs, but curious as to what the wider world and gameplay of Crimson Desert looks like. What happens between those epic clashes? Now, thanks to a 53 minute gameplay video from developer Pearl Abyss that’s available to watch here on IGN exclusively, I have a much clearer picture. If Crimson Desert’s combat is a mix of God of War and Dragon’s Dogma, then its wider gameplay is more reminiscent of modern Assassin’s Creed and other quest-driven open world adventures. The gameplay video introduces us to Kliff, Crimson Desert’s protagonist who sports a gruff...
Space Marine 2 has broken free from the shackles of its Warhammer 40,000 setting and made inroads into the gaming mainstream, and that means there are plenty of players new to its grim dark far future. For them Space Marine 2 is a somewhat bewildering experience, as it leans on much of the lore that Warhammer 40,000 owner Games Workshop has built over decades, with hundreds of novels, rule books, and magazine articles fleshing out the background fans know intimately. Warhammer 40,000 fans have enjoyed seeing newcomers react in shock at just how grim and dark Space Marine 2 is. And it’s not just the extreme gore, mass death, and terrifying alien enemies that appear in the game either. Perhaps the most disturbing element of Space...
Warning! The following article features spoilers for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. A modder has restored content cut from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt ending where Ciri becomes a witcher herself. NexusMods user merigoldmaribor got the scenes running again with working dialogue, showing a sliver of additional content after The Witcher 3 usually cuts to credits. After Ciri receives her sword from Geralt and moves to leave, the scene keeps going to reveal the pair's next steps. "Yen awaits in Ellander," Geralt says (Ellander is a duchy of Temeria that sits east of Vizima). This is the Temerian capital where players visit Emhyr var Emreis in The Witcher 3 and is also the main city of the original Witcher game and its upcoming remake. "We can...
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2’s huge launch saw two million people play the game, publisher Focus Interactive has announced. Saber Interactive’s explosive action game had already enjoyed big Steam concurrent player numbers after its global release date on September 9, indicating a successful launch. But now we have a clear idea of just how popular Space Marine 2 is across PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S in addition to PC. That two million players figure will no doubt include early access players (Space Marine 2’s effective release date was September 5 for those who pre-ordered any of the special editions), but it’s certainly enough to make Space Marine 2 the most-played Warhammer 40,000 or Warhammer video game at launch of...
