Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s PC port is almost upon us, and as its release draws near, Square-Enix has announced that the game is fully Steam Deck verified. Director Naoki Hamaguchi said in a post on X/Twitter: “We have received Steam Deck verification from Valve. I am grateful to the development team for their cooperation in optimizing the game until the very last moment. I hope many people will experience Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on Steam Deck.” Given Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth doesn’t have its own PlayStation 4 port, it’s surprising to see it gain the coveted Steam Deck Verified badge, a feat that mainline Final Fantasy 16 couldn’t manage to achieve. So, to celebrate, Square-Enix created three “specially crafted” Steam Deck units; but...
While Marvel Rivals continues to land atop Steam and Twitch charts, one issue has fans suspicious of their time with NetEase Games’ new hero shooter: bots. The superhero-themed competitive multiplayer experience launched in December to critical acclaim and praise from fans thanks to its style and creative use of iconic characters like Spider-Man, Wolverine, and, most recently, the Fantastic Four. It’s achieved so much success that hundreds of thousands of gamers are still firing up Marvel Rivals every day on Steam alone (via SteamDB). While NetEase’s new hero shooter has managed to dodge some of the pitfalls that trap other competitors in this space, fans have spent weeks raising concerns regarding how AI enemies have been implemented...
It’s been six years since Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong, the eagerly awaited sequel to 2017 Metroidvania masterpiece Hollow Knight. In those years fans have seen Silksong pop up and fail to pop up at various shows, and at one point Microsoft even appeared to confirm the game would launch before June 2023. The Game Awards have been and gone with no Hollow Knight: Silksong. But could the just-announced Nintendo Switch 2 Direct finally be the one? Fans think so, and it’s all because of a picture of a cake. Allow me to explain. Supersleuths on the Hollow Knight subreddit noticed that on January 15, co-director of Team Cherry William Pellen had changed his Twitter/X profile picture to a picture of a chocolate cake. Pellen...
Edit: The story has been updated to report that Bluepoint's canceled live-service game was a God of War title. Sony has reportedly canceled two unannounced live-service games that were in development at Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games, respectively. Bloomberg reports that Sony has ended production on two live-service games that were in the works at Bend Studio, best known for the zombie game Days Gone, and another separate game in the works at Bluepoint Games, best known for their remasters of games like Shadow of the Colossus and the Demon's Souls remake. The Bluepoint game was reportedly a live-service God of War game according to Jason Schreier. A Sony spokesperson confirmed the cancellations to Bloomberg. Sony also added that...
X/Twitter owner Elon Musk lit up social media feeds today when he launched a wave of posts publicly criticizing Twitch streamer and content creator Zack Hoyt (a.k.a. Asmongold) following controversy regarding the tech billionaire’s high-level gameplay of Grinding Gear Games’ Path of Exile 2. Musk first shared his thoughts in a reply to a post from YouTuber Screamheart, who published a two-minute clip from a new video that dives into the allegations surrounding the X owner’s Path of Exile 2 gameplay. The full video totals eight minutes and includes approximately 20 seconds of footage from Asmongold's livestreams where he alleges that Musk is not totally responsible for the progress made on his level 97 Path of Exile 2 character...
Normally, when a sequel is announced that’s a wild departure from the original, I welcome it with open arms – look no further than my inexplicable but everlasting love of Banjo-Kazooie Nuts N Bolts as evidence. But after just a day with Hyper Light Breaker – a follow-up (though not a proper sequel) to one of my all-time favorite indie games, Hyper Light Drifter – I feel like Vito Corleone telling y’all to look at how they massacred my boy. I’ve only sunk six hours into this incredibly challenging co-op roguelike so far, and although there’s clearly the skeleton of a good action-RPG in here somewhere, it’s currently buried deeper than the sun can see under sloppy combat mechanics, shallow and frustrating exploration, and scant content...
If you ask people who the main characters are in Monster Hunter, they might say “the hunters” – but others will tell you: “It’s all about the monsters.” So many striking creatures have appeared over the course of Monster Hunter’s 20-plus-year history. With each new hunter and each new hunt, we form new memories around these monsters. That's why players have pored over information about the new monsters appearing in the latest title, Monster Hunter Wilds, and why they let out shouts of joy when they heard that certain monsters would be making a long-awaited return. In this interview with Kaname Fujioka, who was the director of the first Monster Hunter and now Executive Director and Art Director for Wilds, and Yuya Tokuda, director...
Gravios is a hard-shelled monster that’s been deflecting our attacks since the original Monster Hunter, and it’s back in Monster Hunter Wilds’ Oilwell Basin. A few things about this foreboding, unexpected Flying Wyvern have changed, which you can see for yourself in the exclusive Gravios gameplay videos in this article. Gravios is the sixth returning monster revealed for Monster Hunter Wilds, after Congalala, Yian Kut-Ku, Gypceros, and the quintessential Rathalos and Rathian. You can read all about how the Monster Hunter developers select monsters for each game in our in-depth interview. As for Gravios, Monster Hunter Wilds director Yuya Tokuda said: “When we were thinking about a monster that would fit the Oilwell Basin environment...

Endgame players will now also...
The Yakuza series has no shortage of weird and wonderful games. From the serious but goofy at times mainline entries to its plethora of historical spinoffs, prequels, and side stories. There’s something for everyone here, really. Whether you’re looking for the next installment in the long running Like a Dragon series, or just want to play something a little different, our last hands-on with Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii ahead of release suggests that it’s shaping up to be another solid spin-off that will plunder dozens of hours from you. Ever since Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag dropped way back in 2013, I’ve been itching for another worthy pirate adventure. While there have been a few decent attempts released since then...

Nobody should envy Firaxis. Once a decade or so, the legendary strategy game developer is asked to reinvent Civilization, a video game series that has been absent of any tangible weak points for quite some time. Nearly every entry has presented different flavors of that turn-based 4X recipe, but it's hard to say that any one is substantially superior to the others. So, that is the burden that Civilization 7 carries with it. Here is a game that, after playing through the first of its three distinct eras, is shaping up to be very good, but the fact that it’s introducing a huge number of major tweaks and reinterpretations that—in both small ways and big—provide a brand-new way to play Civ means that it asks of its veteran players to enter...
There's a decent chance you're currently getting (or soon will be) lashed by storms. What's the best way to get out of the rain? Grab one of the cheapest video game deals I've found for today. And hey—I think any type of gaming gets elevated to exhilarating when there's the threat of a lightning strike kicking out your power when you're mid-save. Do something every day that scares you, I say. In retro news, it's been 28 years since I used an ice cream van to dispense post-apocalyptic vehicular violence with a clown instead of overpriced Cornettos. That inaugural Twisted Metal would go on to spawn 10 titles produced by a variety of developers, plus a surprisingly decent TV series that should still be available on Stan. This Day in...
A mod dedicated to recreating Liberty City within Grand Theft Auto 5, as a mod, has shut down. Insider-Gaming reports that the Liberty City Preservation Project, a mod meant to recreate the setting of GTA 4 as a mod for GTA 5, has been taken down at the request of Rockstar Games. In a statement on Discord, user nkjellman said "Due to the unexpected attention that our project received and after speaking with Rockstar Games, we have decided to take down the Liberty City Preservation Project." Rockstar is well-known for asking modders to take down various mods like this AI-powered GTA 5 story mode mod, or a VR mod for Red Dead Redemption 2. The Liberty City Preservation Project take down is also not without direct precedent as Rockstar...

Marvel Rivals players are being treated to an unlikely crossover that brings the Advanced Suit 2.0 from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 into the game as a new skin. PlayStation announced the news itself in a post on X/Twitter, revealing a first look at how NetEase Games is reimagining the classic video game outfit for its new hero shooter. This sleek Spider-Man suit made its debut as an original design for Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man, going on to make appearances in all three entries in that series. The main element setting this suit apart from the rest is its now-iconic white spider symbol, with its appearance in Marvel Rivals cementing it as a surprise collaboration with Sony and its console-exclusive superhero game. Expect...
Sony has revealed the full line-up of PlayStation Plus Games Catalog additions for January 2025, which includes God of War Ragnarok, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, and more. Announced on the PlayStation Blog, a total of 11 games are joining the library, nine on the PlayStation Plus Extra tier and two on the PlayStation Plus Premium Tier through the Classic Games Catalog. They're available January 21. While the beloved PlayStation 5 title God of War Ragnarok joins the library this month, it's otherwise a tad short on the usual numbers. The additions usually include upwards of a dozen entries, and at least one on PlayStation VR2, but January's offerings do not. PlayStation Plus Games Catalog Additions for January...
Baldur's Gate 3 players have now downloaded more than 100 million mods since developer Larian Studios released its official modding toolkit with Patch 7. Similar to how it shared the Withers "Bone Daddy" mod to celebrate hitting 50 million mod downloads, Larian has once again relied upon the helpful companion to announce the new milestone. It released an image of the living undead corpse man with large breasts, from a Baldur's Gate 3 mod called Withers Big Naturals. "You are modding naturals," Larian said, with the "100" of the 100 million mods suggestively positioned over Withers. Baldur's Gate 3 crossed the 50 million mods mark in October so it's taken just another two and a half months to reach this new milestone. Patch 7 and...

Warner Bros. Games has released a new trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 that reveals a brief first look at upcoming guest character T-1000 Terminator and a Conan the Barbarian's Brutality. While the trailer is focused on Mortal Kombat eSports, it showcases Conan the Barbarian gameplay that sees the warrior cut his hapless opponent in half during a particularly stabby Brutality. We also get a brief first look at T-1000 Terminator, showing its hand returning to human form from liquid metal form in a scene that rekindles memories of blockbuster action movie Terminator 2. It very much looks like Mortal Kombat 1's T-1000 is based on Robert Patrick, who played the character in the film, and we understand Patrick voices T-1000, too. Conan the...
Promise Mascot Agency just announced its voice cast, which includes a number of surprise additions from the world of video game development. Kaizen Game Works’ open-world narrative adventure sees players explore a cursed Japanese town and recruit mascot friends. You even help a living finger work through anger issues. Where Promise Mascot Agency is punching above its weight is in the voice cast department. It’s nabbed PlayStation developer legend Shuhei Yoshida in his first ever video game voice role, and the announcement comes hot on the heels of Yoshida’s last day at Sony. Shuhei Yoshida worked on PlayStation from the very beginning, playing a key role in the original console’s success from 1993. He was one of the more...
Ubisoft has finally fixed the Windows 11 versions of Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Origins but Odyssey remains broken. The Ubisoft games broken by Windows 11 version 24H2 in November are therefore now, almost, fully fixed. While Ubisoft released updates to Viking era England-set Valhalla and Ancient Egypt-set Origins, Ancient Greece-set Odyssey is still without a fix. "Hello everyone, we have just deployed a new title update for Assassin's Creed Valhalla," Ubisoft said on the game's Steam page, alongside a similar one on Origins'. "This patch fixes compatibility issues with Windows 11 update 24H2." These "compatibility issues" saw the Assassin's Creed games crash every few minutes, essentially rendering them unplayable. While...
The developer of well-received Steam Early Access first-person shooter Fortune's Run has ceased work on the game after receiving a three-year prison sentence. In a shock announcement on the Fortune’s Run Steam page, sole developer Dizzie explained “why the development is imploding.” “First of all, I have some stuff going on I need to make public as it's going to interrupt development,” Dizzie said. “I've been sentenced to prison for the next three years. It's a long story, but I've lived a very different life before I was a game developer, and I wasn't living very well. My case is about five years old now, I have been going through the legal process the whole time I've been working on this. I have finally been found guilty and...
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 was a smash hit for developer Saber Interactive and publisher Focus Entertainment, selling 4.5 million copies in just over a month. Indeed, Space Marine 2 has done so well it “changes everything” for Saber Interactive, Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits told IGN soon after the game came out. But via new financial results we now know just how much money it has made for Games Workshop, the British company behind the tabletop hobby upon which Space Marine 2 is based. Reporting results for the first half of its financial year ending December 1, 2024, Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree hailed the success of Space Marine 2, which contributed significant royalty revenue to the business. In fact, licensing...
We've got tons of deals to get through today and not much time to detail them. Obviously, the biggest ones on my radar include the headliner deals of Monster Hunter Wilds and Sniper Elite Resistance, but also Assassin's Creed Shadows (which was too verbose a title to fit in there). As always, I've even sprinkled in some old gold gems going for next to nada. Get amongst it all below! In retro news, I'm celebrating the twin 37 year birthdays of some NES greats. The original Metroid needs very little introduction, as it's a franchise that continues to kick goals and acquire new fans today. Conversely, the bodaciousness of Rad Racer might be lost on many of you. It was basically one of the best racers on the system and featured...
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League just received its final update, which along with the promised offline mode, adds an official ending to the game's story that wraps everything up in a tidy, if rather uninteresting, way. As previously announced, Episode 8: Balance is the final update planned for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Alongside some new armore and exotic weapons, the biggest feature in the update is a new Offline Mode that will allow players to continue playing Suicide Squad Game by themselves without requiring an internet connection. The Offline Mode was announced in December 2023 as part of Rocksteady's post-launch plans, but the studio was also committed to releasing its promised DLCs and additional...
