PUBG Publisher Krafton Acquires The Ascent Developer, Prepares New Studio Launch In Canada

PUBG publisher Krafton announced that it is acquiring Neon Giant, the developer behind The Ascent. Krafton also plans to launch a major studio in Canada.

In a new earnings report, Krafton says that it plans to acquire the Swedish studio, and also that it is working on an open-world first-person-shooter game. Other than that, no other details about the Neon Giant acquisition were provided, including a price tag.

The planned Canadian studio will be leading the development of a AAA fantasy game, based on The Bird That Drinks Tears, a series of Korean fantasy novels by Lee Yeongdo.

Currently, Krafton is working on several different projects, including Project Black Budget, a PvPvE looter shooter, Project Roam, a multiplayer PvPvE shooter, and the next Subnautica game.

Moonbreaker by Unknown Worlds Entertainment launched into early access back in September and The Callisto Protocol by Striking Distance Studios is due out on December 2.

In IGN’s The Ascent review, we said, “The Ascent’s satisfying gun-tastic action-RPG gameplay loop mixes with its beautiful cyberpunk aesthetic to create an overall enjoyable experience. Neither its story nor its characters are all that memorable, and its enemy encounters can stumble toward the end, but its gunplay and ultra-violence in a neon-soaked world combine to craft a co-op-friendly game you don’t see every day.”
